The song ‘Otherside’, released in December 1999 as the third single from Red Hot Chili Peppers' seventh studio album 'Californication', confronts the internal battle addicts have with their prior addictions, the ‘Otherside’ being a metaphor for both the struggle to resume a normal life after addiction and also death itself. The song is a tribute to former band member Hillel Slovak, who died of a heroin overdose in 1988.
