    Dictators in the Republican period did not serve for life, in fact Sulla was the first to claim the title "dictator for life". Dictators are emergency measures with terms of 6 months.

      @@AZ-vf1qe Caesar? Caesar's story is so well known that it's actually boring. The truth is, there would be no Caesar without Marius. At the time of the first triumphate, Crassus had money and an army, and Pompey had a great military career and military support. Caesar was a poor aristocrat. As a patrician, he could not rely on the support of the people, but because his aunt Iulia was the wife of Marius and Marius was the love of the people, so Ceasar could later become the leader of the populars.

    • @peterjobovic3406

      @@AZ-vf1qe Marius himself is a much more interesting character than Ceasar. A man born in Arpinium who had Roman citizenship only because Arpinium became part of Rome a few decades before his birth. He became Consul seven times. This has never happened before. In addition, he had problems with the Senate because he was a homo novus, a new man. A man without proper ancestors. He achieved everything he achieved thanks to his military talent and the money he earned as the administrator of Spain. He reorganized the army and created a model that was used centuries after his death. Some aspects are even in today's armies.

    Superb video, I find the commentary to be relaxing and enjoyable, but is very hard to discern sometimes as you keep a monotone voice when describing both tragic and impressive events with simple and normal ones. This requires one to keep 100% of his attention on the video as there is no auditory indication of what is important. If there was longer pauses and a higher tone with significant events e.g. death of a tribune or consul. And then a more continuous or ‘regular’ commentary with explanations, it would make the video a lot more cinematic and captivating, similar to Epic History TV and KingsandGenerals.
    Thank you for covering this topic as it is very hard to find a good summary of the events and this was simply incredible. I hope you take my suggestion with a grain of salt - and I wish you the best.

    The Sullan civil wars were very much a continuation of the Social War bc each side played on the fears of both the Romans and the Italians and used all that paranoia to raise massive armies. And then of course Sertorius was able to hold down Spain for almost a decade, and was even able to amass clandestine support from various Roman senators. Pompey apparently discovered correspondence that stretched back years and would have reignited the civil war, so he burned all of the evidence which let everyone off the hook but allowed factionalism to quietly seep into generational divides, which gave him and Caesar their respective bases of support in their own civil war, and then fueled the wars of the bickering Caesarians and Pompeians after both had been dead. 91-31 BCE in some ways was one continuous civil strife that killed hundreds of thousands, maybe into the millions when you include famine and all the peripheral frontier conflicts. Its no wonder why so many were willing to bow down to Octavian in the end. Before 91 being Roman was somewhat exclusive and privileged on the peninsula. After 31 being Roman was universal in Italy and each person had endured the deaths of either family or dear friends in the various political standoffs.

I'm positive this technique will bring you more views and likes.... Once again I am ecstatic when I come across videos similar to this one so plz continue making and creating, sharing knowledge and the break downs of each scenario thank you much and I greatly appreciate your time

      @geordiejones5618 4 місяці тому

      As if Pompey with zero adversary his whole career is so much better. Letting Caesar live to die how he did ensured both the military and the political state had some cohesion. He leveraged his cult of personality into results on the field and in Rome itself. The Republic he inherited was already a corpse, he just made it into something else and Octavian took that concept and ran with it.

  • @randomcarbonaccumulation6478

    A military reform that makes tropps generally more loyal to their commander than the republic? Oh, and another one that gives provincial governors more military authority? Boy, I can't think of any possible way that this could cause any sort of problems in the future!

    Marius was elected consul on the promise of ending the Jugurthine war. Sulla capturing Jugurtha made Marius jealous.
    Sulla also commanded the cavalry at Vercellae and delivered the victory against the Cimbri, increasing Marius' jealousy.
    When Sulla captured Rome, he forbid his soldiers to abuse the city in any way, and punished his own men who were caught looting.
    When Marius returned to Rome, he brought an army of freed slaves and set them loose to terrorize the city.

    The apostle Paul ,was born a Roman citizen ,its very interesting how he used his duel citizenships ,the one of Rome and the other of the kingdom of heaven ,to escape persecution from the Jews ,how they sought him out and tried to set up an ambush by trying to have him tried in Jerusalem,,,,
    Paul the Roman Citizen
    …28“I paid a high price for my citizenship,” said the commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied. 29Then those who were about to interrogate Paul stepped back, and the commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains
    Its also interesting Pilate's questioning of Jesus ,to know if he was a king or not,and how the Pharisees used Rome to have Jesus crucified.It interesting Paul was allowed quite a lot of freedoms while he was in Roman custody and appealed to Caesar even when he could of been set free and it was granted.
    I keep thinking of Jesus' kingdom his people as foreign citizens in the world,and trying to understand some politics around this .I say you have a "politics "series which looks interesting.I was thinking about he preached the kingdom of heaven.I tryed to get citizenship for another country by ancestry but would have to pay a lot of money ,I'm so glad Jesus purchased our citizenship for us,with his blood .Thank you so much I remember being in Portugal and Spain and seeing ruins and roads from the Romans. Sometimes I speak to Muslims They don't believe Jesus died, I saw the one picture you used has a man being g crucified, Im 100%convinced the Romans did not get the crucifixion wrong.Funny I was reading the letter to the Romans last night.I know Paul wanted to go to Spain ,I suppose his Roman citizenship would of helped him .Thank you this really adds colour to these times .sadly I only know a little bit of roman history after Jesus.Thanks so much .The Roman empire seems to have been very grand.I remember walking the Roman roads in Jerusalem ,and the feeling of almost touching history.

    @svei5289 3 роки тому +1

    No offense and i don’t mean to judge the way you make content but since you’re a history channel instead of sitting down, talking and showing your whole face in the video as if we’re having an actual conversation may be more of a disservice to your subscribers or people that click on your videos out of curiosity or to just learn. This because growing up going to school and attending history classes, all the stuff our teachers would teach us about history, topics like yours would constantly bore me and made me dread attending history classes due to the fact that all we have to see is a person’s face. This is in no way an insult to your looks or voice or anything. I always found that history video formats are much more interesting and attention grabbing when its similar to a slideshow. Examples of channels that do that format would be like: @Weird History, @History Tea Time w Lindsay, @Real Royalty etc,. Videos in that format are a lot more interesting because while they’re explaining we can physically see what you’re talking about like pictures. It’s showing your audience that imagery you’re explaining but with our own eyes. It’s also WHY those channels seem to do SO incredibly well. I’m a history buff that dreaded almost all my history classes and once i discovered history in YT and the channels i mentioned, history became so much more interesting to me. Unfortunately, history isn’t very interesting to most of the population after school, during their free time or in general. For most people history feels like or is an obligation they don’t like. Having such a small history community here on YT because history isn’t interesting to most people makes it hard for channels like yours to really succeed. If succeeding is what you’re looking for then i really do recommend you at least try it out. I clicked on your video and although it was mostly a video i would watch and expect from a history channel, it wasn’t completely but this video was great and the map and all of that kept me interested. Hopefully you keep making videos like this and better, which i trust you will with time just like everyone else but always stay true to yourself and what you believe works best for you and your platform. If you put your face in the thumbnail (in the corner or something) and have a better background like a photo that has to do with the topic at hand while you’re explaining is a suggestion without having to change everything as i know what i’m suggesting could be time consuming and not practical for you personally, if you don’t want to take your face out of the video. An example of that type of video format would be like, @MrBallen who makes presents horror stories and accidents. You could do something similar but with history. I can see how it would be more personable and relatable to the audience as-well but for history content it may not be all that right but as i said its up to you. Fixing up the thumbnail will also be easier for the audience tell what kind of video format it is and that you’ll be giving us that type of format without having to click and find out. I’m pretty sure you can get some cheap green sheets at five below for the background. You also have a great interesting voice so narrating could be your thing:) Thanks
