I worked on the Cottage Grove sub back in 1981 when it was the C&NW. I believe it was called the Waukesha sub at that time as the tracks ran from Milwaukee through Waukesha all the way to Madison. I operated a C&NW ultra-sonic rail test truck over the line from Milwaukee to Madison twice before it was abandoned and turned into a hiking/bike trail. Nice informative video on WSOR freight rail operations around Madison and thanks for sharing!
Awesome night shots, especially with the reflection of the locomotive off the lake and the moon in the background , very nice framing of shot! Love the way the horn echos, gifts me goosebumps. Was in Janesville This past Tuesday, both the 3928 and the 4170 (40th anniversary) were at the roundhouse with 5 or 6 of the ex U.P. SD60M's. Hope they end up in a similar paint scheme, rather that Watco black and yellow. It's been a good 40 years for the WSOR, after the Milwaukee cast off those branches. Thanx for taking the time to make this video!
The "ballast" hoppers are actually aggregate cars for Lycon Cement. They have three plants around Madison that receive these cars. Madison East, Middleton, and Oregon.
The "former Milwaukee Road E unit" is actually the former PRR 5896A that was repainted as the Milw 35A. The PRR engine was an E8, while the Milw unit was an E9 according to what I've been able to find online. Did not realize the CNW station was still there, bought my last bike from the Bike shop across the street!
Prior to 2008 the WSOR went down the Vita Plus spur regularly to switch Madison Newspaper and Madison Recycling, along with Vita Plus when needed. And earlier than this the railroad crossed the Beltline Highway and County Highway PD in Fitchburg serving customers on the former CNW Ridge Runner line that until the mid 80's went out to Fenimore and Lancaster.
Only in certain parts of town is there QZ's. Cottage Grove sub once used to have 4 crossings stacked one block after another. Nothing but horn from First Street all the way to Winnebago St. Same with from Winnebago to the switch for accessing the Waterloo Sub with 3 crossings a block apart from each other.

They have loud horns
How often do they run down the vita spur?
Metcalf Railroad Productions as needed. There is no regular daily service down the vita spur.

I guess State Capital hates horns uncommitted to see State Railroad with QZ to me.
