I love the Dune universe’s tangled cosmic web of transcendental mysticism, political intrigue, epic tragedy, treacherous plotting, religious skepticism, and lonely existentialism. It just melds so beautifully into something so much greater than the sum of its parts; it speaks deeply about human psychology and the great, unraveling pageantry of time and life in the universe.
And it’s a series that I always struggle so badly to find the right words to sum it up when recommending it you newcomers.

By the mouth of many witnesses a thing is established. Habakkuk and Ezekiel speak.
Habakkuk 1:9-13 "All come, Hamas, assemble the horde of the east, gather the captives like sand. Mock the ruler, and their judgment a joke, laugh as all strongholds become rubble, seize them, then pass through like the wind, pass through guilty by the strength of your god. From of old Yahweh, He is the god Holy, who died? Yahweh, the appointed judge, and the Rock will establish the judgment. The one who was overcome is pure. He sees the evil's power. Look at the evil. What do you see? Do you favor the ones who do wickedly? Are you silent when the wicked swallow those more righteous than them?"
Habakkuk 3:11-13 "From the east the crescent stood at the heights, walking in the light of the weapons, the radiance of Barack (Husein Obama) from the thrust. There is indignation at his march on the Earth; in anger he trampled the nations. He went forth for the salvation of his people; for the salvation he's anointed. Now strike the head of the house of the wicked; lay him open from thigh to neck, commune with the Lifted High."
Ezekiel 1:13-14 “for the living being was like a consumed ember, a consumed vision upright, shall he walk among living beings, fiery and bright was Barack, he had come out of the consummation. The living beings ran to and fro before the vision of Barack.”
Ezekiel 21:2-5 "Son of man set your face towards Jerusalem, and speak against the sanctuary and prophecy against the land of Israel, and say to the land of Israel, "Thus saith Yahweh, "Behold I am against, and the drawn sword from the sheath, and cut off shall be the righteous and the wicked. ON THIS ACCOUNT cut off the righteous and the wicked, thus the drawn sword from the sheath, against all flesh south north, ALL FLESH SHALL KNOW YAHWEH, the drawn sword from the sheath, never to turn back again."""
Ezekiel 21:9-12 “Son of man prophecy and say, Yahweh utters, “a sword, a sword is sharpened and moreover laid bare, sharpened for slaughter the slaughter of laid bare Barack, for shall we rejoice at the son who rejects all the branches of humanity? For it was first given laid bare the handle sharpened and laid bare and set into the hand of the destroyer (Abaddon or Apollyon). Cry out in anguish, son of man. And my people, all the so blessed of God’s Word (Israel) are delivered unto the sword. My people! Thus I shall strike him at the thigh.”
Ezekiel 21:13-15 “Test your community. Truly, also the scepter which despises shall be no more, declares the Lord Yahweh. Son of man prophecy and clap your hands together, the sword twice, and now the third time, the sword pierces, the sword for the great one as it pierces those who indwelt and surrounded them. The inner being (demons) weaken greatly, they were brought down to cause stumbling, All of them are at the gate (of hell). Give them to slaughter by the sword. Alas, they had made Barack (Hussein Obama) and caught themselves up for the slaughter.”
Ezekiel 21:28 “and son of man prophecy and say, All utters Lord Yahweh, towards teaching towards this reproach, say a sword, a sword has been drawn and laid bare for the slaughter to consume Barack.”
Do Job and Moses the earliest writers of the Holy Bible agree with this testimony?
Job 26:6 "naked death before Abaddon, and nothing shall cover them over."
Job 26:13-14 “by his breath the heavens are cleared, his hand shall pierce BARACK, a serpent. Behold ALLAH the end of his ways. How? A whisper, a word, hear the strength and the thunder. Who can discern?”
Deuteronomy 29:25-29 "and they will say, 'ALLAH (the accursed), for they forsook the covenant of Yahweh the God of their fathers, Asshur (he who shall come forth) shall cut off they who were brought out of the land of Egypt.' They will come to serve another god (Allah), and prostrate before a god, Asshur (he who shall come forth) shall know to divide. And the breath of Yahweh shall burn against that land (Palestine whole - see Isaiah 14:29-31) to bring upon all a curse written in this book. Yahweh shall uproot the land in anger, fury of great wrath, to cast another land as it is this day concealed. Yahweh our God. Uncover the Son. For unto the last, this is the observance of all of the words of this book of law."
Deuteronomy 32:41 “Truly I cut into Barack with a sword, for My hand shall accomplish justice, I will turn back the vengeance of My adversaries, to repay all those who hate Me.”
Zephaniah 2:12 "Moreover Cush (horn of Africa black man) I shall slay by My sword."
I can't imagine a religion so stupid as to pick a man to be their leader who already had two times, was cut off to prosper in the sense Trump made hatred grow, denied the desire of women in that Hillary was denied, but they froze the vote in six states to give you an image of his time. He came into office with Nobel Peace Prize already in his hand and put a piece of paper (grain offering) into the wing of the temple (Wailing Wall) and even turned the key to a bottomless pit by WikiLeaks and an Arab Apology Tour that ended with him kissing the ring of the Saudi Prince ove the Ka'aba and during that Arab Spring three kings were removed in Egypt, Libya, and Tunesia in less than one month (29 days) and since this Arab Spring the second beast under a false prophet has been burning down churches in Europe in the thousands such that it can be said they give their power unto the image of a beast.
Imagine picking someone to prostrate to that will literally rule for one hour with ten chosen important Arabs to also rule with him for one hour, but that's it. Palestine melts when Palestine is whole per Isaiah 14:28-31 because Barack Hussein Obama has already fulfilled all the Bible passages about him and so Muslims just want to rush to burn in hell with demons. Too dumb to know pick someone else and maybe you could avoid hell for seven years as that man might have to fulfill some things before they all go to hell.

@@buktomsin, when Anti-Christ is at the top of Mt. Zion per Isaiah 14:16 we will squint our eyes at him and say, "This the man who shakes the whole world? He shook merely the region of the first." And before Isaiah 14 is over it says none shall break rank, so the Anti-Christ upon being revealed will melt with the Palestinians while that nation is whole per Isaiah 14:28-31, so Anti-Christ must fulfill Anti-Christ stuff before making it to the top of Mt. Zion.
Has Barack Hussein Obama had two times? Was he ruined to prosper in that hatred grew with Trump once Barack Hussein Obama was cut off? Are we now at the end of an image of his time? Was Hilary Clinton denied such that the desire of women was denied? Did he come in with a Nobel Peace Prize already in hand? Did he reign during WikiLeaks when Arabs learned American Ambassador write e-mails that are racist towards Arabs? Did he do an Arab Apology Tour to all 57 Islamic nations and end it with kissing the ring of the Saudi prince over the Ka'aba in Mecca? Did he put grain offering in the wing in the sense he has already put a piece of paper into the Wailing Wall? Did an Arab Spring occur wherein 3 kings were removed in 29 days (less than a month) in Egypt, Libya, and Tunesia? After the key was turned to a bottomless pit by a messenger with a rainbow over his head with WikiLeaks and an Arab Apology Tour such that Muslims following a false prophet flood into Europe and burn down churches in the thousands and thus give their power unto the image of a beast as they (an E.U.) are not like a Roman Empire at all now?
Can you think of anything that Anti-Christ must fulfill before showing up at the top of Mt. Zion once Palestine is whole if it is Barack Hussein Obama?
Can you think of anyone who has fulfilled one thing Anti-Christ must fulfill aside from Barack Hussein Obama?

So now how many more witnesses beyond four (4) do we need, when the witnesses wrote the Holy Bible and thus are reliable?
      Psalms 77:10
"and I uttered, 'it is making me sick, that the year has become the right hand of ALLAH.'"
      Psalms 77:18
“The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind, BARACK lit up the whole world. The Earth shall tremble in agitation, shake.”
      Psalms 77:16-20
“The waters shall see Elohim, the waters shall see a whirling in the depth, yea, tremble in agitation. The clouds shall pour forth the waters, the skies shall give forth a voice, arrows shall flash. The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind, BARACK lit up the whole world. The Earth shall tremble in agitation, shake. The traveling was of the sea, the path in the mighty waters, and your footprint shall be known. You led your people as a flock, your hands, Moses and Aaron.”
      Psalms 97:4
“BARACK lit up the whole world, the Earth, see it tremble.”
      Psalms 97:1-6
“YAHWEH reigns on the Earth so rejoice, many lands shall rejoice in the clouds, a mass surrounded in righteousness, the judgment shall fall on the foundations, for His throne. Fire comes before to consume the adversaries round about. BARACK lit up the whole world, the Earth, see it tremble. The mountain melted like wax before the face of YAHWEH, before the face of YAHWEH, all the Earth. For the heavens declare His righteousness, all the peoples see His glory.”
Job 20:25-29 “Draw out and go through the back, BARACK shall remove all strength, a dreadful overcoming shall flow forth. All is darkness, the reserve he has stored it up, an unfanned fire will devour consuming the survivor in his tent. The heavens shall reveal his iniquity and the Earth will rise up. The increase of his house will desist downward the run forth, the day of his anger. This wickedness of man is the portion of gods, and the inheritance decreed by the Word of God.”
Job 38:35-36 “Can you send BARACK, and make him go and say, “Behold who pierced wisdom in the inward parts to run forth,” also given understanding to the appearing.”
Isaiah 14:14 "ALLAH OBAMA ab (in dark outer garment) dama (I will become) elyown (the god over all things)."
Isaiah 27:1 “In that day YAHWEH will punish the beast of the sea, BARACK, a serpent. The fierce and great and mighty sword ALLAH, the beast of the sea, crooked, a serpent, and He will kill it, the Dragon, ASSHUR, of the sea.”
Isaiah 30:30-33 "YAHWEH the voice of authority, and listen BARACK, for the strength shall be seen as rage in the nostrils and flames shall consume with fire storm in a downpour, the voice of YAHWEH. Asshur will be terrified. He shall strike with the rod. All shall be hit with the rod of punishment, Asshur. YAHWEH will rest at the sound and work in battle, for the wave offering of the battle is a burning of flesh long set in order. Moreover the firm King shall cut deep and large at the pyre in fire and shall stand breathing. YAHWEH shall whirlwind the fire and the brimstone shall ensure all is consumed.”
Psalms 18:13-15 says, "Yahweh thundered from heaven, and Allah uttered his voice, hail of ember and fire, and he sent out arrows, BARACK had an abundance, confused, the channels of the sea appeared the foundations of the world laid bare, by the rebuke of Yahweh at the breath of His nostrils."
2 Samuel 22:14-16 says, "Yahweh thundered from heaven, and Allah uttered his voice, and he sent out arrows and BARACK was confused, the channels of the sea appeared the foundation of the world laid bare, by the rebuke of Yahweh at the breath of His nostrils."
Zechariah 9:14 "Yahweh shall appear over the arrows coming from BARACK. For the Lord, Yahweh, will blow the trumpet, and they will march into the storms of the South."
Daniel 10:6 “His body was tan, his face the appearance of Barack, and eyes a consumed shine; his legs and feet to the eye a burnished bronze, and the sound of his voice where like words given to a multitude.”
Nahum 3:3 “horsemen lift up the sword, and blade pierces Barack, the multitude is slain, and the mass of corpses is innumerable dead bodies, and they stumble over the dead.”
Psalms 144:4-6 “Adam was like unto vapor, for his days were in shadow and culminated. The reach was the heavens for YAHWEH and yet he descended touching the mountain and it smoked. The flash of BARACK dispersed sending forth arrows (nuclear weapons) with noise."
Luke 10:18 "I saw SATAN as BARACK OBAMA."
Matthew 24:27-28 "For as BARACK cometh out of the East and shineth even so far as the West so shall it be at the coming of the Son of man, for wherever the bodies lie so too an EAGLE IN UNION."
Revelation 16:17-19 “For even the seventh was poured, a bowl into the air, great voice came out of the temple from the throne saying, “DONE.” BARACK voiced thunder great, shaking of a manner as never had been from the time man had come into being on Earth, this person was of great lineage, great earthquake like unto this. The great city split into three parts, a city of nations fell, Babylon great was remembered in the sight of God, to give her the cup of wine, PASSION for wrath."
Quran 13:11b-14a says, “Never doeth Allah change the condition of a people, excepting they change themselves, and Allah intendeth evil for all people, and there is no stopping him. Neither doeth he accept an equal. Barack is he who showeth you the face of Allah, giving a fear and a hope, though heavy the clouds and the thunder, exalt and prostrate to him, for even angels fear him, for he sendeth forth thunderbolts, striking whom he wills, while they dispute before the face of Allah, and he is severe in his attack. To him alone are the prayers in truth."
Quran 7:45-47 says, “Who shall avert people from the path of Allah? And who will be declared the maker of deception? They were focused on the Hereafter, disbelievers. Between them shall be a barrier a family of men of Obama, who shall recognize them all by their markings. And one (Barack Obama) shall call out to the companions of Paradise, “PEACE ON YOU.” They shall not have entered, but shall have the assurance. And his eyes shall turn towards the people to be torched for they cry out, “Lord let us not be cast into fire among the wicked” but the man Obama shall say, “I know you by your looks, but none of your riches or pride of life shall avail you now, for these men have sworn that you may never earn the mercy of Allah.” Then he shall turn to his own BARACK (the blessing) shall say, “Come with me to paradise, for you will have nothing to fear, neither regret.””
While they're talking to Barack Hussein Obama they are worried about the fact they're about to be torched. Good to know.

Really interesting, love the moody guitar music behind it. Great quotes from Frank Herbert. Great David Lynch interview and behind the scenes shots. Great quotes from that guy Damien Walter. Love it.
I felt the same about Dune at the time as Kyle. I really felt into the role of Paul Attreides, despite it being a warning. I read Dune and Lord of the Rings maybe in the same year. I was thirteen and I was imagining what it would be like to be a great leader, luckily I wasn't.
The idea that the future is already written in Dune, like the 'block universe' idea in physics is interesting and ultimately would mean we have no freedom or autonomy or responsibility; unless the block is written but contains all possible futures. I think quantum physics shows the future isn't written and even the present isn't that well defined. But maybe that thing about the future is about the inevitability of death; even death of our civilisation and species.
I also love the fact there are no intelligent aliens in Dune, except that humans have adapted and become like aliens. That throws the focus back on us and how we make other humans into 'aliens'.

I think the big difference between Lynch's "Dune" and Deni's "Dune" (besides one being a visually stunning train wreck and the other the work of a fully seasoned and connected auteur) is that Lynch's "Dune", being Lynchian, actually looks like a world that is 10,000 years removed from anything resembling the 20th century, so it's visually fascinating while being incredibly hollow and frustrating. Deni's "Dune" is (so far) the most accurate filming of the novel itself in all its complexity. It's a great work of art, but it lack's the total strangeness that the '80's "Dune" possesses. I hope Deni's "Dune", when completed, is a great success both artistically and financially. Still, people will always be fascinated by Lynch's "Dune", especially in microscopic doses (as showcased in your masterful video here) because of the utter strangeness of it's style.

Lynch's "Dune", on the other hand, is (visually) like no other Hollywood movie that's been made in the last 50 years. It's also a train wreck, especially if you've read the books. The sudden rain storm at the end still makes me want to hurl something heavy at the screen...(..."because he IS the kwisatz haderach!") Even Lynch thinks it's a mess. I can understand why the author feels like it didn't meet up with his expectations, he had a message to share, and a question asked and answered, but everyone else got something different. I do believe this became a classic precisely because, in answering his own question, making his own statement on such an epic stage, that it was impactful enough to answer questions that others have. I don't feel he or any other author should be disappointed that their driving theme didn't get through, because it will sit within the reader, percolating and ripening, until a situation rises up and poses the challenge to them, and then, your answer, will not just be realized, it may not be a conscious thing, but the answer will be there for them, along with yours. Well done sir!
As a writer, I got distracted by the authors message, but the actor in this one is a very good one. He has a very unique look that early interviews stated he thought a barrier to career, so he had to develop more as a person and work harder as a professional, so has a deeper well of humanity to draw on when that unique look went from challenge to boon. He did a very good job bringing all of that out and making for a much deeper and believable character for us to enjoy. Well done to you too sir!

I think even Lynch might admit that casting Kyle MacLachlan as Paul was a huge mistake. When I first saw him on the big screen back in '84 I groaned. He looks about as much like a teenager as I do (I'm 60). A major undercurrent of the story is Paul growing from spoiled young royal into something more mature (and terrible). Hard to get that when you cast a 30 year old actor in the part. I have to shake my head when I see people who've never read the book claim that Timothée Chalamet looks too young for the role.

Like that after you find out the sardaukar are literally wearing body bags, you can't unsee it. But the world feels lived in, which I think the new movie failed at for me. It's probably as close to a Director's Cut of the film he shot, and represents nearly all the footage he shot -- minus the end-bit where it rains on Arrakis (which didn't belong in the movie anyway). Our understanding of the future increases the realm of the possible and the unknown. That’s a beautiful way to describe it. Listening to Frank talk in the 80s, I wonder if had he lived, would he have veered into a cyberpunk type (or approximation) of exploration of his stories future? And I mean that within what influence would exit solely in the early 80s. Because “Dune” is an exploration of history, but also a critical view of the future.
Herbert’s challenge to the mythology of “Futurism” and prediction, as well as his take on “the future” seems damn close to Cyberpunk in the 80s.

I prefer the most recent Dune movie than the 1984 film, but thats not to say it didnt have strengths. Dune 1984 really captured the aesthetic of the world the most closely, albeit with limited tech. It could have been great with a full 4-5 hour runtime, but then again, Lynch was not a political person, and as seen in the Dune 2 script he had, he was never ready to explore the ideas like the manipulation of religion, and the fallibility of leaders, compared to Villeneuve actively mentioning how Paul's story is more of a warning about heroes than a praise.

No idea if this is true, but the three supposed writers and their respective works were Frank Herbert (Dune), Robert Heinlein (Stranger in a Strange Land), and L. Ron Hubbard (Dianetics). Personally, I have found more of spiritual worth in Dune. Stranger in a Strange Land is great, don't get me wrong. I have adopted the concept of "grok" into my own philosophy. Herber wrote Dune because he loved the genre and was able to do it. But, I find few things very interesting, in fact, more than a few but I find it brilliant of him how he evaded writing about things he did not know too well, like computers and AI. Sure, there is a description of Butlerian Jihad, and some supercomputers in robotic bodies but in the world of Dune there is no sophisticated computed technology because Herbert didn't write about things he didn't know well enough.
The second thing is those desert suits, dresses... Those can't function, no matter that there is a good description of how those work still, that kind of suit can't work, it goes against some fundamental physical laws.
Sorry if there are mistakes, English is not my first language.

    • @pauljazzman408
      @pauljazzman408 10 місяців тому +3

I also think Herbert's Dune avoided computers and robots because it dates very quickly but also may end up in a 'singularity' where it all becomes about what some future Ai would do for unknowable reasons. Plus it explodes the myth of modernism that things will continually improve, technologically, democratically and socially, when it is far more likely that we will go back to previous forms of social organisation, feudalism, autocracy and theocracy.
The dessert 'still suits' didn't bother me, of course you can't reclaim all water, but if you reclaim a good percentage it still helps the Fremen survive the desert.

Thermo has no trouble on water reclamation systems, a stillsuit should be a heat exchanger, which could work on something like a peltier (the book is very vague on purpose), so if the fremen find a way to provide a heat sink for the sweat and other excretes to condense, you have your stillsuit, add some cloth like sympatex and an exterior plastic/rubber membrane, tied to said heat sink or heat exchanger, and you got a basic stillsuit

It can be a water reclamation system but the body will not be cooled if that water just circles back, it will be of the same temperature as the body or higher because of the sun. That suit may work if they have some kind of small fridge on their body, but even then they will need an external source of energy. That suir simply goes against the second law of thermodynamics, the body can't make energy perfectly, one part will be thermal, so it can't function unless you have an external source of energy.

Lower class people like Gurney and the common folk would say "ar ka nin" sort of like northern English or Yorkshire. Posh people and aristocrats would say "Harkoonen" sounding like Posh Southern English.

Yeah, but it was a funny joke and he was clearly having a great time. Bless the maker and his memes.

I'm a bit confused by Frank's monologue at the end. He suggests that at the root of science there is only faith. But this statement is antithetical to the very definition and practice of the scientific method. Test, observe, repeat. It is true because it is repeatable. This is not a process that requires faith. More of an abandonment of logic and reason rather than a heresy, or abandonment of faith.

Read your Descartes. Even the you doing the observing is a presupposition.

Love you editing Denis speaking of psychological barriers and then cutting to explaining that gis fear of making Dune was plain personal disappointment.
