Great tutorial with lots of helpful information. I really appreciate your explanation of why you place the horse halfway in or out at the door and how the harsh light would create a line across the horse. Thank you!
Thank you so much for doing this video. I have horses all around me and so many humans that have horses as their pets. I've gotten some work from them but I wasn't sure how to get better at horse photography. There were so many tips backed into this video.
BRILLIANT Thank you!!! This is exactly what I needed to know. My poor horses wont know what's hit them. My wonderful photo rope from Emma came today as well.
@@ThatPhotographySpot thank you for the tip! I studied the rope for some considerable time and thought...no....can't work it out :) Emma sent me a video and now makes sense. :)
That was fascinating and beautifully done, but way too advanced for me. Is there a beginner tutorial that would get me moving in the direction of being able to do lovely work like this…eventually? I have not used any photo editing software. Where do I start? Thank you!
I have a great beginner video for Photoshop: ua-cam.com/video/-M0LLrJVbQU/v-deo.html And also a playlist for beginners: ua-cam.com/video/4ZlrPwa_7bs/v-deo.html
just watching this - but as you were saying if there is hard sun light - it will create a bright photo or create hard lines on the horse. in the example you diffused the light - but how would one diffuse the light in an actual hard sun light situation? large scrims? many thanks
Most technical but correct answer would be large scrims, but with horses that is a little risky because they may spook, increasing the risk factor of the session. Basic answer would be wait or reschedule for a day with forecast cloud. Meeting in the middle on the basis there is no darker/shaded area, and scrims aren't an option: Place the horse further into the shed/barn to avoid harsh light on them - this may increase the amount of masking and clean-up required, but it's often the only way when you're out in the field and you have to work with what you've got 🤓
I am using Camera Raw 15 and cannot for the life of me figure out where the radial filter is. I've found radial gradient mask but unsure if that is the same thing?
Sorry that it was too quick for you, you can alter the playback settings in each video you view. This can be used to slow the video playback down which may help if you find some videos moving too quickly. Glad you still learnt a bit from this video though!
The information in this video is amazing. I thought I knew how to take decent black background portraits of horses but I learned a ton.
Amazing news, glad I could teach you something new 🤗
Feels like you always post when I’m about to eat food. It’s perfect😂👍🏼
Just providing snack content is my lifes goal Hannaa! 🤓
agreed haha
All of your videos have been the best tutorials I have ever watched. Thank you!! I've learned so much from these.
Glad you like them!
Love the desktop models! What a great way to illustrate the basic points. Thanks for sharing.
Amazon did lie though - they said the pony would be 15cm tall! We improvised though 😂

Thanks for watching, I am really glad it was useful!
Brilliant demonstration!!
Thank you! 🥰

You are very welcome!
love your explanation with the toy pony 😂❤
I might get me some models to do this more often 😂 Amazon did say he was 15cm tall though... absolute lies!
Awesome video again from start to finish! Can't wait to try it out 😁

Hahaha we were very lucky Darryl - the prefect model 😆
This i needed.. i struggle with edit black background... and this look so much easyer that other video i had a look at... thank you fore that...
Try to control the exposure difference as much as you can and you should find it much easier! Get it right in camera for a quicker post production 🤓
Thanks Jess - another great informative & enjoyable video - much appreciated xx
Anytime Ruth, glad you found it helpful!

BRILLIANT Thank you!!! This is exactly what I needed to know. My poor horses wont know what's hit them. My wonderful photo rope from Emma came today as well.
Oh enjoy it!! If the rope goes slack the noseband can slip down so just keep an eye on it 🤓

Thank you! I’m still new, but I’m going to try this with my bulldogs Stella and Petey.
Good luck!
Great video! very useful, loved the toy horse haha, gotta be creative in corona times 😄
If nothing else this pandemic has surely improved everyone's creativity?!
What is the exif data for this photo and was this full sun? What time of day?

@@ThatPhotographySpot thank you Jess!
hope you and hubby and four leggeds are happy and safe!
Itching to be out shooting but we're doing our bit! Hope you and yours are safe and well!

Hi, What lens do you use for these types of photos?
When you say expose for the house, do you spot meter on the horse?
We shoot on full manual, so metering doesn't take effect 🙂
I find that when I try to remove things on the layer it won't do anything even when I have clicked a source?
Is the layer a smart object?
I sent a second request to join your FB group!!
Have you managed to get in now? We've had a change with the admin so there might have been a bit of a delay 🙂
@@ThatPhotographySpot Yes, thank you so much for the reply!!
It went too fast. I'd have to pause every 5 seconds to follow along and I couldn't see half the menu choices u due to that. I did still learn a bit.

Nice video. But your government is insane.
Thank you
Good God what a rigmarole in Photoshop....I could never bother with all that lol!!
Everyone's got their own preferences and it's a case of finding what works for you. There's nothing wrong with using another piece of software 🙂
