When you said that blood work only costs $3 or $4 Dollars I nearly fainted. It cost me $1,500 US dollars for a a few simple blood tests without insurance. I'm not even exaggerating. 😭😭😭

US healthcare is severely broken. Being a highly capitalistic country US made a mistake of privatising healthcare early and extremely profit oriented insurance companies and pharma's basically ruined the healthcare for the country.

I live in the US, and my friend went to the hospital to have a rape kit done on her after she was drugged at a party... and it cost her $3000... She almost didn't go because of the cost, which just shows how oppressive the system is toward women and the lower class. I really hate America's healthcare system 😔

Medical costs in the US are insane!
In Portugal, it is free for all. Usually one pays a small fee, like 7€, when we go to the doctor. If a person has a low income, they are exempt from paying the fee.

Lovely video. It’s true Korea has many great things. I just want to say to my fellow foreigners here that this video (like most other videos about Korea) was only about the positive aspects of Korea.
And don’t get me wrong it’s a great country, but it’s not some sort of paradise on earth. Korea definitely does have some negative aspects too, specific to the country. Some of which were a not so very nice surprise to me when I was visiting. I just want to tell you guys to not be naive like me and do your research if you’re planning to visit. Otherwise you might get disappointed.
Again, no hate, I just want to warn you guys.

      1. The sewage system. Many toilets in Korea don’t function well to the point where you can’t do a number two. Even the Airbnb where I stayed had this issue. And if you do find a toilet that is suitable for this you still can’t flush the toilet paper, which means you’re going to have to put it in the little trash can next to the toilet. Something no one told me about.
      2. The air quality. Many of my friends and I got lung issues due to the amount of polluted air in Korea. I know this for sure, because as soon as we came back home it was over within 24 hours. One of my friends got sick to the point where we had to go to the hospital. This already was very difficult, because the first few hospitals we went to sent us away to other hospitals. Probably because we were foreigners, but I’m not sure about this. When we finally did find a hospital willing to help her, they just gave her some weird injection, which made her feel super energetic for about two hours and then she went back to feeling very sick. She was basically sick until we went back home, so the injection was completely useless.
      3. Poverty. It was really really heartbreaking for me to see soooo many elderly people and others on the streets, carrying huge piles of cardboard or plastic or whatever to sell that for just a little bit of money, just to get by. You can easily see them walking everywhere, but nobody seems to care about them.
      4. Safety. I know Kelsey said in this video that Korea is very safe for women to walk outside at night, but personally I have to disagree with that. When I was walking alone in Korea, even during the day, I had some scary moments of guys following me/recording me with their phones. If you’re going to a club in Korea, especially as a foreign girl, there’s a good chance that there are guys who will try to get you drunk and then take advantage of you. This happened to one of my friends and it’s really sad. The Korean police doesn’t seem to care about this. Also spy cams are a thing. In almost every place where women could get naked you can expect to find one.
      5. Trash. I know this is a small thing, but I went to Korea during summer, which was not so nice in combination with their trash management. They just put it on a pile outside waiting for the trash men to pick it up. Combined with the heat during the summer it caused a disgusting smell throughout the entire neighborhood. This is not that bad I know, but I feel like no one talks about this.
Of course there are many more things like societal pressure on Koreans to be successful which causes the country to have one of the highest suicide rates in the world, but that’s not as noticeable for a tourist.

Hi I’m sorry I’m bit late to this convo but I’m from Finland and some young people here if they want to become doctors consider studying in other European countries since it can be easier to get in. I’ve heard that the education in Italy is quite good but you wouldn’t want to study there if you are a woman. My cousin’s friend’s brother is studying in Italy and he said that he wants to come back from there because he can’t stand all the sexism the female students have to go through. Also I have no personal experience with the medical school in Italy, just things that I’ve heard and this just crossed my mind when I read your comment.

So, I was constantly comparing it with my country and I was quite amazed by the medical facilities and delivery system. I mean we also have nice medical facilities here and they are of the same price as Korea but it isn't that fast. We have 24*7 free ambulance service but once you are in the hospital you have to wait unless it is an emergency case. Plus we don't have hospitals in every block. We do have a lot of private clinics but you can't trust them easily.. And as for the delivery system we get options, if you want urgent/fast delivery then you have to pay an additional fees(probably $1), but the normal delivery usually takes 2-3days for a common product and 5-7days for something uncommon. And clean public transport seems like a dream for us.
But Thanks a Lot for this very useful piece of information..❤️❤️

In Germany we have our insurance, which means we don't have to pay anything if we go to the hospital/doctor. We just pay a specific amount of money every month to it, but we don't have to pay doctors or most medicals. I really love the health system in Germany.
But here, especially as a woman, you are not really safe at night. A lot of German women don't go out alone when it's dark outside.
Also, food delivery in Germany is quite bad. If you deliver a pizza here, you have to wait about a hour or even more. And shopping groceries online does maybe only exist in huge cities like Berlin or Hamburg.

    Hi Kelcey!
I'm Allie 22 from Sweden! I agree with your boyfriend that the medical system in Sweden is not as efficient as in Korea lol. the welfare covers because we get taxed over 30 percent of our income, even higher if you have an income above the average. this made it possible for us to have free schooling (kindergarten to university), we also get paid to attend university which actually blows many peoples mind lol. but is not a lot, around 300-400 dollars for school supplies and books and stuff. Also, we get free dental health care until we are 24 and after that u pay around 50 dollars which is super affordable.
The subway/bus/tram system is quite different for each city in Sweden. Stockholm has a subway+bus system, while Gothenburg (the city I live in) has a well-developed tram system. I wouldn't say the tram card is that cheap anymore. around 60-70 dollars for a nonstudent (adult), for the kids in high school and under is for free, and for a university student, you pay 50 dollars now per month (it used to be 45).
ahhh must be so nice to have a nice delivery system, the delivery system in Sweden could never be that good, 3-4 days waiting is quite normal. lol, uber eats is so expensive, in general, Sweden is super expensive but I live in a city in Sweden which is near Oslo Norway so I try to work there during winter breaks and summer breaks so I earn double the Swedish money which is really nice.
Also, something I like about Sweden is how most people here can speak fluent English, even the older generation speaks English very well!

Korean's taste for spice has always interested me. Generally cultures that eat spicy food were near the equator an the theorized reason for this was that being near the equator the time of low food availability was the dry season so food would need to be spiced and dried to be kept safe to eat, where as temperate regions the time of low food availability was winter and food could be kept fresh by setting it outside in the cold. Korea appears to be the exception.

I cannot resist to comment another time: The service (delivery, health, commerce) is excellent, so as a visitor you are in the paradise. But as Koeans confirmed to me: As a client you are the king/queen but providing the service you work you the ass off. It is really hard. Very long working times. Some kind a consequence of the Korean way of life: When working so much, the people have no time to wait for delivery or the doctor. Everything has to be fast ... palli palli.

Thank you for sharing!! Many of the points mentioned on your list were definite pluses for me when I decided I would work hard to move to Korea and I truly appreciate your balanced views. Of course every country with have its perks and least favorable aspects, but that's normal - no country is perfect. I think as long as we are fully aware of both sides, realize that the pros outweigh the cons (for each person specifically of course) and make an educated decision based on this, we give ourselves the best chance to have a proper experience when moving countries. This is not only specific to South Korea by the way, just a general remark.

I agree with a lot of the good things about Korea you said (accessibility of public transport, general safety, food delivery system, healthcare system), as a foreigner who has lived in Korea for a while. I love Korea for the same things too! But here's a couple of things I disagree with: The KTX trains are expensive and the internet... is less great than I thought it would be.
    So to elaborate:
    1) 50 dollars/euros for one way ticket is SOOOO much... I come from Finland and our public transport sucks ass in all kinds of ways, but as a student, train tickets cost me anywhere between 10-28 euros, and regular prices move somewhere between 30-45 euros (excluding really busy traveling times). Those prices translate to the same distance travel than Seoul-Busan, but not only are they cheaper, the train is much faster too... The Seoul-Busan train trip took over four hours, but here in Finland the same distance takes me just two and a half hours. And like, the average wages in Finland are much higher than in Korea (because of the high living costs in general), so if I thought the train tickets are expensive, doesn't that mean they're way worse for Koreans themselves?
    2) Koreans love to brag about their fast internet, but... well, depends who you ask. First of all, it was hard to find an operator that would serve foreigners in English AND give us honest, affordable phone plans that actually functioned the way they should (I know a bit of Korean, but not enough to be able to discuss phone plan details in an official setting). Second of all, the kind of wifi services that worked without phone plans were always public and therefore very unsafe. Third, even with a Korean sim card, the kind of wifi offered wasn't... particularly fast or anything, and it disconnected often. Fourth: the situations where I actually needed (not just wanted, but NEEDED) stable internet connection, were the ones where there was no wifi available, and I had to rely on mobile data. This means outside in the parks, forests, streets, late at night, in taxis and buses, where I need to find out my location and destination, etc. And mobile data services? SUUUPPEEER expensive, to a ridiculous extent. It looks like normal Koreans rely on the wifi system alone - you don't even seem to want a limitless mobile data. But for tourists, having one was very important - we are the ones wandering off, getting lost, going for long hikes, we need trustworthy internet connection that works outside of subway stations too and doesn't run out of data immediately after five minutes of internet browsing. But limitless mobile data plan were easily 70-80 dollars/euros per month! That's not reasonable for a student (which I was back then)! I then ended up buying a prepaid data plan that cost me 23 euros or something, but that only included 2GB of internet, and I almost used it up in the first DAY... just opening an Instagram feed sucked it up within minutes.
Now in Finland we don't rely on wifis so everyone buys phone plans that have limitless mobile data, and it costs us 18-25 euros per month. Prepaid cards that offer the same price point are then given to tourists and foreigners too. The internet speed is still very nice (anything between 100-400 Mb, depending on the company) and doesn't ever run out so we literally never have to worry about that. I think we don't even have limited mobile data plans anymore, those ran out of fashion ten years ago. And still we have password protected wifi wherever we think it might be needed: campuses, libraries, shopping malls, airports, cafés and of course homes. I hate to say it but I think I love our system five times more than the Korean one. Now PC bangs as part of the speedy internet culture are of course great, I'm envious of Koreans for having them...!

Dear Kelsey, I give you a bit contra to what you said about public transport. Don't take it wrongly. The KTX is almost perfect copy of the TGV in France. But it is not based on a magnetic system. Actually, going to Busan in 4h by train is not very fast as with a car you can to do it in the same time (assuming no traffic jam). Once I took the KTX from Seoul to Daejeon, it was quite funny to observe that even the smell of the train is the same as the one of the French TGV. But it was disapointingly slow. I think, the KTX even did not attain 200km/h. In France the TGV is much faster, in particular on longer distances it reaches 300km/h. So from Lyon to Paris it takes less than 2h

Can’t believe you’ve been to my country (Brunei)!!! Our healthcare system is also pretty good. We only have to pay around 850won for a visit to the doctors. Although the wait time can take hours lol. And our education is also close to free. 🙌🏼
Edit: also proud of my government for how corona was handled. we’ve been corona-free for almost a year now 🥺💪🏼

r.e the medical system, that sounds so amazing! we really treasure our NHS in the UK but our government has been doing it's utmost to destroy it, its really heart breaking, I hope they learn from more progressive countries like Korea. population size is not an excuse!

And the amazing thing is that the Korean population is not drastically far from the British one yet the coverage of the Korean healthcare system is something else.I believe Korea is considered to have the best medical system in Asia. For context,52 million (Korea) and about 67 million (UK).

How much do (uncooked) vegetables and fruit cost? Here in Italy we have this culture of "vegetable/fruit shops" around everystreet and they sell a variety of ingredients by weigh. And they are very cheap. My mom buys KGs of stuff she needs to cook and barely goes over 30 euro. (One example, today I bough 1 kg of kiwis for 1.50 euro, roughly 2 usd) how is it in South Korea? And also do you have butchers? Is meat so expensive as some drama make it to be? Like a common type of meat, not luxurious ones!

    • @user-jd6rc2de9l
      @user-jd6rc2de9l 3 роки тому

Yup, licensing rights actually. The first KTXs were licensed to be produced in Korea by Hyundai from TGV in the 1980s but the newer KTXs and SRTs introduced from mid-1990s until now that would be replacing the older KTXs are all domestically developed and designed (I think Hyundai too) and they are even licensing designs to other countries now.

I’m currently a nurse in the US in the hospital...and this health care system is TERRIBLE. Especially since Covid hit. I can tell you from experience... people’s life saving meds are insanely expensive. Some $300/month... and oral chemo medications? Those are THOUSANDS/month.
There has also been a time where I didn’t have health insurance and when that happens you really have to debate if you should go to the doc/hospital. There are times I’ve just had to wait things out. I hate this health care system soo much and how it works, and sometimes I just feel like a cog in the machine.

What I'm so jealous about is for my hobbies I have to order from aliexpress but there are k-vloggers I follow and they just go to a shop or a market and buy stuff in real life. Re the medical system I agree the s.korean medical system must be great but when I heard that hospitals are full of young pretty nurses it made me nervous. In Australia we have a similar system but less access for sure. But when I've been in hospital in Australia the nurses run the hospital basically and I developed so much admiration for them. I want an older experienced nurse, perhaps someone old enough to have kids. If I was in a hospital and all the nurses were recent graduates I don't care how pretty they are I want super experienced staff, they would make me nervous. One thing I'm definitely jealous of though is the after birthing facilities. We don't have anything like that in the western world. Women are back at home often in like 3 days trying to look after themselves. My husband (who is Korean) and I were discussing how it seems like the overall system in the west is designed to keep women tough. Many women reject the whole medical system for childbirth overall and have babies at home with a midwife because they don't trust that part of the system to look after themselves and their babies. It seems like Korean women do trust the system and its designed to look after them.

First of all, I am sorry for my bad English.
Korea tends to be obsessed with height.but
There will be no big problem in social relationships.
Your height is a little shorter than the average of Korean women.
      It is not considered short.

(I could not finish my last comment). The TGV takes only 2h for 500km Lyon - Paris. (Actually Korea is too small for a high-speed train to demonstrate its real benefits ...) Well, almost all English-speaking countries are bad when it comes to train-based infrastructure (UK included... no high-speed train exists... although it is the country of the vapour machine).
The subway in Seoul stops running before midnight. My wife always gets nervous when we travel late in the evening that we cannot finish the trip (including changes) because of the shutdown. A couple subways in European cities are more generous in this respect. Anyway, taxis can fill it up ... The airport limousine bus is very good. It runs indeed from almost all important places in Seoul in a few's minute rhythm.

Let's be honest. Every place has pros and cons. But in general Korea has no quality of life. Should I analyze it? Oh that's boring but I'll say..pollution, stress, depressed people, no vacation, competition, limited time in life, not good doctors about western medicine ( personal experience because I have a serious health problem ).
Of course there are good things too, but it's really a good place to raise a child. Especially if you are a European like me where we know what's life quality.
It doesn't mean I don't like Korea. My fiance is korean. I lived in Korea for some years. But really I don't imagine to raise my baby there. Awful. I love Korea, it's my second homeland. But the way foreigners see Korea is different from the way that the girl in the video does. She's Korean :) She experience her country differently than us. And the bad things she might experience in Europe, probably are not bad things for us, Europeans.
