I just upgraded my wife’s camera from the R7 to the R6II and then taught her how the back button eye detection and then the spot auto focus worked, and she was blown away! The smiles were well worth the upgrade! I was a game changer. I no longer have to hear her getting angry and cussing, because her camera wont focus anymore! Thanks for all your help fellas. Cheers!

Terrific video! I really enjoyed the in-person interactions. I don't recall you mentioning it in this episode, but the increased sensor readout speed and concomitant reduction in rolling shutter was another factor motivating my purchase of the R5 Mark II. I'll have a better understanding of how much of an upgrade the R5 Mark II is from the R5 when I return from my upcoming trip to the Amazon.

    Hi Jan and Glenn,
Thank you for this great Video! 👍
I got my R5 Mark II on August 22, 2024 and I am very satisfied. Later I also got the CF-R20EP battery grip/fan and three additional LP-E6P batteries.
Unlike many others, I enjoy photographing and filming mammals the most. Birds and other animals too, but of secondary importance.
In my opinion, the noise behavior is no better than the R5. Basically I turned off all assistants like noise reductions.
I've (only) two R5 and I saw no real different.
But the autofocus on the R5 Mark II was significantly better in low light. But in the twilight after sunset, the R5 Mark II did a good job.
    R5 Mark II + RF 600mm f/4.0 L IS USM + RF Extender 1.4x
Wild boars in front of a bush and the R5 Mark II's autofocus had no problems. The R5 already had problems here.
This are the main reasons I bought the R5 Mark II. Better autofocus and better video features and capabilities.
I will definitely continue to use one of my two R5s.
For me the R5 is still a very good camera. So I don't know yet whether I'll ever buy a second R5 Mark II.
Thanks for this nice video and I look forward to seeing more of your videos! 😎
    Greetings from Germany
    Uwe

Awesome vid guys so good to see you together at last! I finally picked up an R5 instead ive been shooting 5D4s for 8 years and pulled the trigger far too late, the R5 has blown me away and I got a really nice used one here in the UK for £1700 which was a complete steal! Il pick an R52 up when they come down in price but so far even the R5 to me is a complete game changer especially with older lenses and tele converters. Lenses and tele combos I would never use before have been unreal! I have a 70-200 F2.8 MKII and a MKII 2x extender but would never use it as I have a 100-400 MKII but ive been in Orlando covering an event but wanted to get into the wetlands and already had 20kg of gear, brought the tele and had an incredible time with it! So flexible and the focus is unbelievable even with an old MKII 2x. Im sure the RF lenses are unreal but still a bit too expensive for me.

Great to see you both together and trust you had an amazing trip. I have received my new Canon R5 mark ii and set it up based on your guide and Jans video. Then a couple of days ago I went out to use the camera for the first time. It is the rutting season in Denmark right now so I photographed some red deer stags. To my frustration, the camera struggled a lot when using the auto eye detection and I often had to use the single point focus on the eye. Hopefully, this is only related to this specific subject.

With respect to Glenn's comment about not knowing if you'd upgrade to the mark 2 if you shoot mostly macro at 31:43. The mark 2 supports flash while focus bracketing with user selectable timing between shots. For many macro photographers, this is an important feature.

Whenever there are several birds in the frame, I either use spot focusing or the control stick to focus on the one I want, and then I press 'start/stop whole area AF' in order to lock the AF to my target. After that I can recompose all day long while the focus stays put as long as it still sees the bird. That makes focusing on a specific animal in a group super easy. The function can be set to any button in the customization menu. When my R6mII can do this, the R5mII surely can do it just as well. Hope this is helpful. Have a good one! :)

What an amazing surprise to see you two together! You provide the absolute best show on birds and photography. Thanks for taking us with you and giving us a little digital trip to Down Under.
I have the R6 and as I’m mainly a birdwatcher who likes to take above average bird photos I am struggling to justify the cost of the mk2. I am def going to upgrade to the R5 as end of next month I will be in West Papua and I need a better camera than the R6 for those BoPs! The idea of using the mk2 and having to cull thousands and thousands of images on a slightly older Mac is also holding me back.
I still need to find the time to start Jans photoshop course in which I enrolled but have not even done one second of haha. So where would I find the time to
    tackle such heaps of data!
I do hope that the R5 is an upgrade over the R6. I should’ve gotten the R5 back than but I couldn’t afford it back than. It’s nice to see how good the old R5 actually was and still is, so I’m confident it will still be an upgrade for me despite skipping the mk2 for now

You can buy one of my R5, they will be BoP proven :D In terms of shooting in the dark and high ISO, the R5 gives you better IQ than the R5 II, but slightly worse AF
The R5 behaves quite similar to the original R6 with better ergonomics and more MP.

Having previously watched Jan's video on setting up the R5 II, I went ahead and purchased the R5 MK II settings pdf with the .csd file to try and save some time setting up my R5 and tweaking from there. After loading the .csd and trying it out my heart skipped a beat....then I remembered that Jan is not a fan of hearing the shutter click, so I quickly realized that that option was turned off :) so I immediately sorted that. Another thing I need to change is Jan's assignment of the dials, I prefer the a bit differently. Network settings I also disabled as I don't use these. Haven't been able to get out to the field as yet but I believe I will be happy with this setup.

Excellent work guys. For birds in the bush/tree I am currently setting eye detection = auto, whole area tracking = OFF, limiting AF areas to point focus *with* eye focus and point focus with *no* eye focus, and assigning a button to toggle between these two; this prevents the eye focus from wandering away from the bird. I'm still experimenting with the best button setup for this.

Good video guys! I have shot with the R5 for years and now have the R5II. The focusing system in my experience is far superior. It tracks the eye on birds in flight whether the bird is flying straight at me from the side, etc... You would think that 20 FPS would be plenty but with 30 FPS I am capturing more favorable wing positions. (yes there's a lot of culling!) I am able to get shots now that would have been impossible with the R5 and yes, I am keeping the R5 for landscape photography...

I haven't tried the Mark II yet so thanks for all the good info. I had the chance to visit the Atherton Tablelands almost 20 years ago and it was well worth the trouble of getting there from the USA. I do recall it being very dark but the variety of wildlife and the prehistoric flora were amazing. I was shooting with the original Canon 5D so needless to say my low light pictures aren't great. Sad because I don't know when I'll get another chance to photograph a platypus. If I was going to be shooting in those conditions on a regular basis I think I'd probably give up the crop/reach and go with either an R1 or R3 and hope I could get a little closer.
I really hate culling but I finally feel like I have a handle on my back catalog, I'm not sure I'm ready for those frame rates plus precapture. I'd likely have it set to a lower FPS.

What a relief! And exactly what I would have expected from the two of you. There are so many UA-cam "influencers" who have simply refused to acknowledge what you said in your conclusion. "There is no perfect camera." With the others, if anyone dares to point out something less than perfect about a camera, the hosts (and disciples) descend on them with fury. There is nothing wrong with an objective look.
I may have missed it, but when you were shooting the R5II in the heat (very much like the South Texas heat where I live) were you using the cooling grip? My R5II overheated at a very strange time when I wouldn't have expected it. But I didn't have the grip yet, so maybe that is a factor.
I sent mine back. Not because it wasn't a great camera. It was. But I realized that it wasn't the big step up I was looking for in most areas. The AF being the big exception - but I know my R5 so well that AF is rarely the limiting factor.

If you did have the grip attached, it seems like that might have had an influence on the overheat situation. For my part, I think it has a lot to do with air movement in addition to just ambient temperature. But we also regularly run 80%+ humidity. I don't know what other factors might be different. I have a couple of colleagues who are working pros who have both had their R5II's overheat. I'll see if they want to drop by and add their names to the list.

Camera Canada has been responsive but there's also nothing they can do, as is also the case with Canada Post.

Great to see you two both in the same room! I've had the R5 MK II since the day after release. Definitely taking 2 to 3 times as many pictures in a given day than the original R5. I took the new camera to Cape Cod this week and it did very well on a whale watch. With the boat moving at full speed I was actually able to get sharp shots of some shearwaters somewhat far away. I did notice that with single-point AF the eye detection sometimes wants to jump to a different subject. Have you had any video IBIS issues with the 200-800? Sometimes it makes this weird rotational jerky motion. It also happened to me with the 600 f/4 EF MK II lens. The old camera allowed you to edit the videos in camera, whereas this seems to be missing in the new one. The old camera sometimes jerked side to side with that lens at the beginning of a video, and it was easy to trim that out in camera. I broke the memory card door on the Mark II as it bumped up against a metal pole, somewhat of a freak accident. The new camera is now with Canon for repair, and I asked them to check if video IBIS is really working properly.
I am now using the original R5 and it did well photographing a rare Little Gull during a ridiculously high tide right up against the shore yesterday in New Hampshire. It was with hundreds of other gulls, and with single-point AF and back-button eye detection, it usually stuck onto the Little Gull. As you were talking about frenzied photos with finches, the same thing happened with these hundreds of gulls feeding and trying not to get wiped out by the gigantic waves. Turns out I got some nice flight shots that didn't even register with me as they happened!
Jan, I noticed you are using a 1TB Wyse CFExpress 4.0 card. I tried other brands' 1TB and 512GB 4.0 cards and found it could take up to three seconds to fully wake the camera from sleep, which causes missed shots. I went back to my Sony 256GB 2.0 card and the MKII wakes up in about 1 second or so. I know someone with the ProGrade 512GB 4.0 card, and he says it wakes the camera up in one second.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 місяці тому

It depends on the cards and how many images are on the cards as well. The 1TB card seems to be a bit slower than the 512 and 2 TB I use as well. The prograde ones I use wake up fast unless there’s a lot of images on them

Jan, my husband and I just spent some time on the Atherton Tableland for the first time in many years. We were trying to photograph Victoria’s Riflebird. We ended up finding one to photograph, but it was very high in a tree and a long way away. i was blown away by the Riflebird photographic opportunity Glenn and yourself enjoyed. We are happy to pay for an opportunity like this one you had. We will be returning to the Atherton Tableland again, in a much shorter time frame than previously. However, as we live on the Sunshine Coast it is a special but long journey north. Can you please share the details of where you managed to get your closer encounter with the Riflebird? We would be so very appreciative.

Im leaning at R5 mark II since I have the R5 and the R3 and even though I love the feeling of the later and the fact that the battery is better on the R3 I believe that the R5 offers more and I belive that Canon have to come out with a R1 with a global shutter and better resolution then I will go for that one.

Reprogramming the DOF button to use as a speed booster does work, but it does require the use of a third finger (pinky) to hold down the DOF button if you are using back button focusing at the same time. It is a little awkward, but doable. I found it to be too awkward, so instead added the continuous focus speed menu option to “my menu” with the “my menu” screen prioritized to display right away. To avoid having to reach over to the other side of the camera to activate the menu I programmed the set button to also activate the menu. Any functions that I need to get to right away are also added to the “my menu” screen which is displayed right away by pushing the set button. If you still want to program a button as a speed booster without using 3 fingers, you can do it if you have lenses that have function buttons on them like the Rf 200-800 or 600 f/4. They usually come preprogrammed as AF on/off buttons, but can be reprogrammed to be “boost” buttons by assigning the “switch ES continuous shooting modes” function to them. Once you select your desired boost speed / frame rate, it will remain at that setting . The lens function buttons are activated by holding them down, once you let go, you return back to your slower speed. When you aren’t using a lens that has function buttons, you can revert to using the prioritized “my menu” method

I traded my R5 in for the R5 Mkii and have absolutely no regrets except the non availability of spare batteries. As I was travelling overseas, in frustration I purchased 2 power packs that recharge the batteries on the go - just plug into the camera with a c cable - cheaper than spare batteries. Works . I’m upgrading from a R6II to the R5II. My photo friend who already has his R5II took an image using Canon RF 100-500mm f4.5-7.1L IS USM Lens, with subject at about 150M distant (500ft). I took the same shot with my R6II, using the same 100-500mm lens and identical settings. Comparing the two images we proved that the R5II gives noticeably better focus and sharpness than R6II

Jan, I just recently read a great write up on Canon Europe explaining the different stabilizer modes and mode 3 may have solved your issue? Here’s an excerpt
Mode 3 is especially useful for sports photography where you are likely to be moving between subjects quickly. In IS Mode 1 this can create a bump or jump within the viewfinder as the IS races to keep up with the lens movements. Instead, by not activating until the shutter button is fully pressed, it saves the system trying to compensate for random, rapid lens motion and compensates only at the point you are taking an image.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 місяці тому +1

It may help, but it’s actually really hard to handhold long lenses with TCs and the IS not stabilising.
      Always a trade off

Great show. My results with the R5 Mark II are pretty much the same as yours. I note that, for bird photography, the shutter speeds used are on the low side. The pre-capture is awesome and it works well for insects such as butterflies and dragonflies. My order for the camera was completed within 10 minutes of the open window and I got it in the first wave, including the 2 extra batteries I ordered. No mention of eye control. Does anyone think that someone, somewhere will figure out how to use it in real life wild situations? I did not sell my R5 and intend to use it as a backup and for low light situations. A perfect combo, I think.

Thanks for the detailed real world use of the R5II. A few weeks ago I decided not to upgrade for the reasons mentioned near the end of your video. I don't photograph birds very often (I do enjoy it) and shoot mostly stills. That brings up an interesting question. Are all your shots prior to you using the R5II not very good or defective? I believe they look stunning, so for us hobbyists like me this a lot of money to spend for an upgrade to get better autofocus and maybe some improved video features.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 місяці тому +1

With this new cameras it's all about the in the field experience. The "old" R5 files are totally fine and sometimes even better, but this camera allows us more of an edge when shooting action in particular and there's no more of these annoying image wobbles and not much overheating and a much better remote connection for instance. So for someone like me that's a huge upgrade, but one that not necessarily shows in the actual images

Once again an excellent video and some fantastic photography. Thank you! I've been shooting with my R5 M2 since release day and I agree with what you have to say. Not at your level, but I have put quite a few thousand pictures through the camera. The lowlight performance has given me the most worry and I was anxiously waiting for DxO Pure Raw. I wish you could have tested out Pure Raw before releasing this, but it only came out a few days ago. I was using Adobe Enhance and Topaz (by converting to DNG) on some images but in my opinion DxO is doing a superior job. Also, I use Capture One instead of Lightroom but was using it before Capture One came out with support and then continued using Enhance and Topaz until the DxO release. IMHO, the color from Adobe looks good, but without Enhance high ISO files have significantly more noise than from Capture One. I believe when the R5 came out it took a while for Adobe to optimize the processing and I suspect this will improve for the R5 II as well. I'm also hoping that some of the annoying limitations for the R5 II will be addressed with a firmware update. Fingers crossed! Finally, I had my 3rd battery appear yesterday, I hope you already got yours or will soon. Looking forward to your opinions on Pure Raw vs the competition for the R5 II files and a fresh comparison with files from the R5 after noise reduction.

Great video (as always). Just got a second battery (relaxing just a bit) in Victoria BC (Canada). A few things I have noticed with my new R5 Mkii - 1) the battery information shown for the older batteries just shows the icon with but not the % part, also "info" is greyed out - so you can only register the new "P" batteries. 2) for pre-capture if I hold down the button the available frame count goes from 94 down to 80 - regardless of the fps I have set - 5, 20 and 30 fps - so not 1/2 a second - tested with 3 shots in 5fps and got 17 images! It is strange because I could swear I tested this when I first got the camera and was getting 1/2 second. Maybe I have accidentally changed something that affects this? 3) that hotshoe cover isn't as bad as some report. I saw another video where they showed a way that (mostly) works for me - you only need to hold down the button to move a millemetre (push from camera front) then remove finger from button and hold from the sides when pushing the rest of the way off.
