Thank you, thank you, thank you for spreading the word about our people and their art in Guatemala. I am so proud of my culture and my indigenous brothers and sisters. Watching this video brought tears to my eyes.
This art takes a hugeeee time and effort. And its so painful to hear turist "how less for that?" They do when go to buy a LV bag? Those talented women are doing an art from centuries. Its a "ancestry art in this time". Please, when you came to our countries dont wants pay less they ask! All our works are doing by hand! You cant fund this one in a factory. Yes, it is outdated an inneficient. Modern technology allows us to have better quality products for less money and faster. Too bad people who refuse to modernize think the rest of the world should appreciate their wasted time and effort.
@@willyjimmy8881 Clearly you have never seen this work in person You apparently do not place much value on artistry, skill, beauty and tradition or even human dignity for that matter. Yes it takes longer to weave with a backstrap loom, but you can't say the quality is less. The Chinese knock-offs that are coming into the market now are less expensive but inferior in quality and beauty. And not everyone gets the opportunity to work in a sweatshop - some put food on the table and send their children to school through work like this. And I wholeheartedly agree that the idea of trying to negotiate a lower price with an artisan whose monthly income may not even approach a typical tourists hotel bill for one or two nights is obscene. Shame on anyone who gloats over their "great deal" in a Guatemalan marketplace.
I have just returned from Guatemala and purchased threads from the same shop and wandered in that same museum. Thank you for this video. It explains far more than my photos do.
As an amateur weaver myself, I am full of respect for this exquisite work. I know how labour intensive weaving is, & know that people generally do not understand this. More people should watch these wonderful weavers at work & appreciate the cultural aspect, which is the same in many other parts of the world.
I seriously doubt it. Imagine how much even a minimum wage worker would earn for laboring 90 days, all day long. Now imagine how much their labor would be worth if they were valued as someone with unique and specialized knowledge and dexterity, as well as patience to stay on one job so faithfully. There's no way they were compensated more than a tiny fraction of that value. Possibly they were paid commensurate with the value of a few yards of machine-woven cloth, or the price of an ordinary store-bought blouse, which may have been as little as a thousandth of what their hours of labor warrant.

I always thought these woven pieces were special. I just didn't know why. After watching the enormous amount of work that goes into making each piece, I have a better understanding & appreciation of this artform and the women who make them.
Such bright rich colors from plants and other natural resources i hope they. never stop weaving or passing it down from mother to daughter Lee the talent and gift for math
Love this, one small disappointment, I would've loved to have seen someone try on the woven garment. A dress maybe pretty on a hanger, but you don't see the designer effects til worn. Just a thought, but so much work deserves to be shown off.
kendo The last photo is all of them with the finished clothing they have woven. I know I would have like to see the American women in the clothing too.
If you ever wanted to release the raw footage of them talking in Spanish we would love it!!!!! It’s always best to hear ancestral teachings word for word, with tone and connotations included:) also those bordados are sacred designs we shouldn’t ever rush them, it happens all the time but it’s disrespectful. Weaving was a spiritual tool not just for clothes, but spiritually was targeted in Guatemala so we can see it survives in different ways. It’s sad that you guys rushed this hardworking pregnant women so you could have a “finished product”. The important thing is that they share the knowledge, and they didn’t have to. I hope they were generously compensated not only for their work, the product, but also the expert course on weaving they shared with you to distribute.
Oh my gosh! I was looking for a video about making a rug out of plastic shopping bags when instead I started watching these amazing artists! Gracias a las mujeres que enriquecen la arte. Maravilloso trabajo.
the work is amazing but its sad to know that these poor women are going through a lot.. may god bring ease in their lives
Beautiful work!!!! Sorry to hear about her baby :(
Beautiful job . Thanks for a beautiful video.
Thanks for the encouragement to keep telling the story of Maya weavers.
So very beautiful a proud tradition that all would love to know but only the few ever will
I always thought these woven pieces were special. I just didn't know why. After watching the enormous amount of work that goes into making each piece, I have a better understanding & appreciation of this artform and the women who make them.
Which is exactly why we made them. Thank you for your thoughtful comment Kathleen Vitale
My legs feel dead from watching her sit in that position for so long. What a wonder!
Muchas gracias! Very grateful to see the origins of the ancestors.
Beautiful and greatly appreciated and respect. Thanks for sharing
Such bright rich colors from plants and other natural resources i hope they. never stop weaving or passing it down from mother to daughter Lee the talent and gift for math
Gracias , hermosos trabajos !!!!!
Stunningly beautiful. Such dedication.
This work is so beautiful.
Love this, one small disappointment, I would've loved to have seen someone try on the woven garment. A dress maybe pretty on a hanger, but you don't see the designer effects til worn. Just a thought, but so much work deserves to be shown off.
All their clothes are handmade
kendo
The last photo is all of them with the finished clothing they have woven. I know I would have like to see the American women in the clothing too.
Wow, beautiful weaving! Love it!
She is an artist man she's great at it man I wish I had skills like that
wow, amazing women! my hats off to them.
Ой, какой кропотливый труд!!!!!! И как красиво получается!!!!!
(English: Oh what painstaking work and how beautiful it turns out!) Thank you for your comment. Kathleen Vitale
absolutamente maravilloso el trabajo del tejido, los colores y diseños. admirables mujeres
Que trabalho tão bonito!!!!!!! Amei cada peça !Parabéns!!!!!!
Muito obrigado
Oh my gosh! I was looking for a video about making a rug out of plastic shopping bags when instead I started watching these amazing artists! What an amazing craft they have and what amazing women they are. I would love to buy something from them. Is this possible? I am left in awe after watching this video and want to know more about these women and their weaving. Thank you so much for bringing me this wonderful film!

I hope these women were paid the worth of their time and their beautiful work, and are continuing to receive a portion of the proceeds from this video's income on UA-cam.

This looks incredibly painful kneeling on that hard floor for hours. This is an amazing art form and clearly very hard work.
My knees and ankles would be screaming! But yes, the textiles of Guatemala are fantastic, and the women who make them are SO talented.
