Sorry about your loss Ben... It's fun to raise them, fun to watch them and see them grow. Nothing is more fun watching them when you walk up to the tank and them swimming back and forth on the other side of the glass. Us fish Keepers try to give them the best home and they happy life to the best of our ability oh, but unfortunately like anything else on this planet everything's life must come to an end.

Sorry for you loss Ben, have had many of these depressing days with loss of special fish. I have transitioned to about 50% American cichlids including angelfish. Surprisingly very little aggression, no body blows and other damaging situations with American cichlids. My losses after 2 1/2 years with Americans, and growing them from fry is less than half my losses from Africans during a similar time frame. There are a number of american cichlids whose colors rival Africans, and the females are just as beautiful as the males. Never thought I would be "moving over" but I have a lot less aggression, a lot less fish losses in my fish room

Ben, I have gone through very similar incidents...a fish gets beat up and our first instinct is to remove him and give him time to heal up...then you put the fish back into a populated tank and they suddenly die. I think your fish may have just gotten stressed from the change in water parameter difference. The same thing happened to me with an mbuna that I had from 1 inch.
I think the best way to reintroduce fish into established tanks is to do a water change in the "hospital" tank using the water from the big tank and let the fish get used to that water for a few days first...then put him in the big tank. I have gone this route for 2-3 other fish since losing the mbuna and so far it's worked out very well.

Sorry to hear he didn't make it, you gave him a good life though. I just lost one of my boys that I raised up from fry. A bully got him cornered overnight. We give all our fish names, which makes it harder when they go. But it's definitely worth it when you wake up most mornings to a happy colony of swimming butterflies. Your fish definitely inspire me, although I don't keep Cichlids yet, someday I may work my way up to it. I really enjoy your Saturday live talks btw. Thanks for sharing both the good and the bad with us, it's much appreciated.

Sorry to hear that. They do have lifespans. You do a great job. An average probably is 5-7 year. Though I did have a 14” long male frontosa live 12 years. Unfortunately died due to a heater malfunction. Though the plecos survived.

I love my collection. I have all the common Aulonacara and a few common Haps like a Moorii , Livingstoni, Red Empress( one of which is a juvenile that I chose to rescue, belly was sunken in bigtime, I got him by himself in a 10g and I’ve been following IFG’s medical remedy of using a dropper to give him a concentrated dose of general cure/epsom. He is doing absolutely fantastic. Unbelievably aggressive at feeding time ) . Point being, I get a little stressed when a fish goes apeshit. I know it’s part of keeping these fish . I’ve had success with the “time out” approach. It doesn’t work permanently but it definitely works for the short term. I have a dragonblood and a Turkis that just constantly want to fight. Liplock. Aggressively. The DB is bigger and stronger so he will eventually the kill the turkis however this turkis , named Rocky has heart. He will not back down. So I’ve separated them twice. Both times they stayed calm for a month or longer . Last night I noticed that they are back at it. I’m going to separate them again. I’m not really wanting to part with either fish so this is all I can do for now

Awe, that’s a real bummer, Ben. At least you have him a good life, and he gave you some pleasure! Fish happens, I suppose. But it does always sting a bit, even if they’re “just fish”. 😔 Hope all the newbies are doing well! Keep the vids coming! ❤️

Down part to fish keeping...…..Many years back my son accidently turned the air off to our 100g aquarium, lost many Haps, including my wife's Moorii that loved to be petted by her...
