Callbacks are a subset of inside jokes which refer to something told in the set rather than to anything in general. Because this was one comedian making the call back on a different show but about himself it’s not really the same as the aforementioned sequels you’re referring too.

You realise that was just a media buzz phrase right? The guys themselves never said it was about nothing, they said it was about the minutia of life which is still something, the confusion arises cos in the show George tries to pitch a show to NBC about nothing more than every day life. That's what the media picked up on.

The show was about something: about how Jerry, as a comedian, got his inspiration for his stand-ups. The media was the one running the "series about nothing" thing and Seinfeld and David took that into the series.

@@collieee2957 the reason it was called a show about nothing was because the show regularly ended storylines on a joke with no conclusion. Episodes would end with the principle cast still in crisis, and then start the next unaffected. It was so commonplace, people started asking what the point was. Calling it a show about nothing was a simple way to tell those critics to stop asking stupid queations and just enjoy it for what it is.
The episode where George and Jerry pitch a show about nothing was an obvious nod to those critics, because clearly a show about absolutely nothing wouldn't get made.
There's multiple occasions when the principle cast would commit crimes and there'd be no resolution because it was funnier to not punish them. So, to end a show that had such little stakes with all 4 in prison for simply watching a crime being committed was perfect irony.
Thanks for failing to understand. The fact I had to explain it ruins the joke.

I like how, even though, in the Seinfeld finale, they all end up in prison, that Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm didn't wind up staying there. That would've been terrible had it ended that way. Good callback to a finale that corrected itself in the future later on.

Having the main characters end in jail is what made the finale so funny! After all those years, these sociopaths finally face consequences! If Seinfeld had pandered to audience's sensitivity, it wouldn't have been as good as it was. It was a bold but witty show, and it ending in the most opposite way that is expected for sitcoms made it unique - and hilarious!

I remember Seinfeld once saying how he never wanted to do a show that was a rehash of old clips from previous episodes, which essentially the last episode of thr show was. So, while I think he was a little hypocritical for doing something he said he would never do, I did think the premise of putting the Elaine, Kramer, Jerry and George on trial for their antisocial behavior throughout the series was quite funny though, because it stayed true to show's sense of irony which I always enjoyed.

The finale show was actually an excuse for the show to fund a closing party for all the supporting cast members. All playing in character as expected. Genius really!

I need to watch Seinfeld. I watched a little of it back when it was on Hulu and I don't believe it's there anymore. The thing is back in the '90s which is when I grew up I didn't really watch sitcoms that often. Really just The Simpsons and then some stuff on Nickelodeon and that was basically it. The only sitcom I actually regularly watched back then besides that would be third rock. Anyways I'm more into sitcoms now than I used to be back then. I guess I just didn't really care for the machine laughter or fake laughter or whatever.

Unfortunately I didn't have access or know about Larry David's other show so I did not get to see that reunion but what a story! I was glad to hear about it because I was so disappointed with them being put in jail and didn't get out. Lol. But I did love all the cast from the other shows passing through for the courtroom scene it was fun in a way but sad to see it end. But I totally understand. Thanks everyone! 💜

I'm a big Seinfeld fan who disliked the finale. I always regarded them as self-centered and neurotic but not mean-spirited. Yes, I get that the show was never sentimental but that was still a leap I didn’t want to take...and the Greenday song was an additional slap.
And if the finale was a mistake/misfire, there's no way to redeem it in another series, and after so many years.

Jerry. If you happen to ever read what I am about to say, just remember that even though you don't like praise because you already know that you're funny. Let me just say: YOU did a great job of taking advantage of the opportunities that were presented to you. DEDICATED. PREPARED. CREATIVE. COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE. Yet, the show did have to survive "the learning curve". AND. The chemistry with "the nucleus of 4" could never have happened without JULIA as great as she is. Same with Michael Richards. And the same with Jason Alexander. Yet, nothing would have happened without your passion for comedy and quite frankly not without Warren Littlefield and especially not without George Shapiro. Andy Ackermann has to be given a great deal of credit because great shows need direction. Not to mention the brilliant writing. Was it headed by Larry Charles? And, of course, LARRY DAVID AND YOURSELF making fun of expired fig newtons, etc. at Lees Market which I understand gave you & Larry THE IMPETUS TO CREATE A SHOW.
AND. THE PERSEVERANCE AFTER STRUGGLING THROUGH THE VERY BEGINNING. There is a saying that says don't let people "sell you short".
I don't know. Maybe that was the mindset of the whole team. AND WHAT A FANTASTIC TEAM IT WAS.
Yet, YOU WERE THE CATALYST. OR SO IT SEEMS TO ME.

I like the finale but, in my opinion, it has one major flaw: It's the Seinfeld universe's version of violating the chief maxim of the show's writer's room: "No hugging. No learning." In other words, it got sentimental.
Had they done a normal episode and just ended it, we'd all be talking about how a show about nothing ended with nothing. This discussion would've never even come up.
