Hey" Iam new to your channel. I was wondering if you would show before and after tire prep. On the track. I feel it would be very interesting to see the results. Thanks if not I understand. Thanks for the video tips. God bless.
I am basher to been to a track a few times but unfortunately it closed but put gorilla tape in your tire to stop ballooning and clean tires with windex or simple green before glueing Us gorilla glue seems to work better than ca glue minis the bubbling and it’s cheaper
See I have deep respect for you race guys. I'm a basher true to the heart. I've done some "races", but all the prep you guys and gals have to do is mind boggling. What some of yall call a worn tire, I see tons more fun involved. A worn tire for me is foam peaking out lol. As I said much respect.
I just want to thank you for posting these tutorial videos. I got my Xray 1/10 this Monday and since I have no experience previous, the videos gives me very useful pointers. Thanks!
You can find one of those sanding boards in your wife’s prep bag. I’m sure they cost way more with a cool name from a hobby store. Great vid. Grew up running RC10s in the 90s. Still have a few of them. The Futaba on you shelf was my first gun style. Started off with a stick radio.
Well done as always Ryan! Thanks for putting out great vids with methods that you like doing. I always enjoy seeing how others in the hobby like doing things in a particular manner.
I tend to just sauce my new tires multiple times in a ziplock bag overnight, till they are slightly more squishy or softer. I let my tires break in naturally on the car itself by running some laps at the track doesnt take long for your tires to form.
Great video Ryan! Be aware though of all the chemicals you are dealing with. I would rather do these procedures on a well ventilated space, preferably outdoors. Thanks!
Ryan your video rock. I purchased new tires and they were terrible without prep. I run on a clay track and could not get any momentum. Thanks for the help I will be doing this now.
I realize a lot of fast guys do this but why not setup your car with a touch softer springs or use a softer compound tire to start with? Cutting down your tread right out of the box means you just took 2-3 more weeks of racing off that tire. Just treating the tire to make the rubber softer should help a bunch, regardless of that 1mm of extra tread. I guess it also depends on the track surface. For loose dirt I can't imagine taking more tread off helps in 2wd.
I'm not doing my tire prep at the track. I do mine under the cloak of darkness...or out in my car at the track because that doesn't raise any concerns at all :~)
I use a 3" x5" piece of 220 sand paper, lay the sand paper on a flat surface spray a tad of Simple Green on to the sand paper and then take the tire and hold the sand paper while slowly sanding the whole tire for 3-4 rotations. Then spray a microfiber towel with simple green then massaging the tire
Seems like the tires should spin in the opposite direction of the arrows since you're effectively doing a burnout, you're actually scratching it in reverse.. Idk anything about this just my 2 cents. Cool vid!
It’s a must on these high bite clay tracks. A prepped tire vs unprepared tire is the difference between driving in the winter and driving on a hot summer day
Wow this is so cool tho! 😄 I didn’t know the pros did all this! Ryan: How much time can a prepped tire gain vs a non-prepped tire on a lap? In car lengths?.. What are your thoughts on the poor-mans tire sause - WD40? 😛
Clay is so foreign to me. I run on an outdoor dirt track. Just slap the tires on and go! Blockades are my fave rn. Wish they made Gladiators for buggys. Those are great on loose tracks.
Ryan, thank you for the great videos. I’m still new to off road racing. Does this work on all tires on all track conditions? Just mounted hole shots on my 1/8 buggy. I pay too much to scrub some rubber off.
Edging… me and my racing buddys called that hooking, or a “hooked” tire…. We would do it on the road… run hard one way would make it grip good when you rotated em..
I used liquid wrench but used this same technique on my drag tires for my drag rc car and the car worked phenomenally compared to what it was by other methods some told me to try.
Dear Ryan, congrats on your channel! It is really nice to see someone do something he really likes. I’m sure everybody enjoys watching your videos as much as me. I would like to ask one questing regarding the inserts of my B74.1. After going through some setup sheets to see what most people do in an astroturf situation, i came through some cases where people choose not to use inserts in the front wheels, so i decided next time to have two different pairs glued and ready to run, one with and one without inserts, just to see the difference. What is the theory behind this approach? Thank you for your time!
Be cool to see more compounds and tire thickness. Having a much thicker tire would give you the ability to actually cut the rubber to desired thickness. Back in my race car days on dirt I had all sorts of tricks like cutting camber into the tires. The rc prep they sell ain't the best sauce you can get, my hint is the worse the chemical the better prep it makes. Application makes a huge difference too...amount, heat, prep inside and out, using clingwrap, using a torch etc etc. The one thing I learned about racing is tires are 100% the single most important factor in achieving fast and consistent lap times. Spec tire classes are cool but open it up to a full open class.
As a technical person, I appreciate this video (and others of yours). As someone just getting back into RC and about to *try* racing for the first time - holy shit - makes me realize my racing career will probably be limited to my zip code (and may not even make it out of my backyard). ;)
If you can find a dirt oval go kart track near you look for a parts trailer on race day. Then ask the guy running it for some winter green tire prep, or some aggressive tire softener with a bunch of bite. Do not call it sauce lol.
I'm not understanding why this is necessary - would you not just run a tackier compound? Or is it to do with firmer rubber maintaining tyre shape and just having a grippier outer layer?
great and informative video, thank you for taking the time to tell people your methods as a pro. and not to come off as bashing, but this video strangely reminded me of taekwondo: the matches between black belters was so much more intricate than people with blue or red belts... but, the matches between the latter ones looked so much more fun and exhillirating. well, to each their own. to each person their own way or level to find their fun and comfort in, because once feelings of DEFEAT and frustration come into play, the fun melts away like snow in the sun brother. you do look like you're still really enjoying what you're doing though, so keep that up man!
Your videos are incredible. I've been out of the RC world for roughly 15 years and am now getting back into it with my son. Question regarding burning in prep, is it possible to do this method with mini pins? I'm running mini-pin tires on carpet and it seems like this method may be tough to use for that style of tread. Or maybe I don't need to burn prep in for carpet racing? Thanks again!
Thankfully Companies like Raw Speed started offering slicks for clay which require little to no prep before you take it to the track. Get those and save yourself a lot of time and hassle.
Rookie question. Once you glue your wheels to the tires and you run your tires to the point there no good, do you toss the wheel and tire both or do you just peel the tire off and re use the wheels? I havent seen anyone really talk about this. Normally I just toss the whole thing because getting the glue and rubber off of the sidewall is a total chore.
Hey pal.. I’m just getting into R/C racing & love your videos. Very interesting and knowledgeable.. Keep up the good work. By the way I have no idea how to rebuild a R/C car & it seems very difficult..
Manoli Patsaros it's not hard, it might be intimidating at first. So you won't misplace your screws, get a piece of cardboard or foam board. Try to draw/trace the chassis of the car. And put a dot where the screws go, then make on for the top chassis, a arms, shock tower. Etc. So when you take the rc apart, each screw you take out to put it into the board.
It not hard at all just pay attention and try not to wait to long in between taking it apart and putting it back together just so you don't forget how it goes! Your rc should have a diagram and that will tell you what goes ware ! The best way to learn is get a kit and build it yourself! Just about anyone who is in this hobby will help you that's the best part of rc !
does tyre sauce go bad with time? got a vintage bottle of LRP blue factor laying among my old rc stuff and thinking if it would work on my new xray xb2 when running it on astro?
Personally, I clean them with simple green, let them dry, rub them with bick 4 (if it's good for boots, it's good for tires), let it sit in a plastic bag for 24 hours, clean them with dawn dish soap and a very light stream of water, let them dry really good, take a towel and squeeze excess water out if you have to. Spray them with Lucas oil slick mist, let them dry. Grind them down until they aren't shiny anymore with a sand sponge from Dollar tree or whatever until they don't have a gloss on them. Then take a body reamer and poke small holes in them at each quarter of the middle.
Just a question , the time you use to make 4 tires can you not just drive them on the track some laps to break them in ??? Must you use sauce . Ar the soft tires not soft enogh ?
Any ideas how to do this to a more knobby tire like traxxas truck tires? Seems like the scuffing would be harder than with these smooth tires. I just want to clean them and get all the compound off that they pick up from the track.
What about new astro tyres? Pin style like mini darts, how do i break those in because when they're fresh they're waaaay too grippy and cause waaay too much steering
Makes zero sense to first use scotch brite if youre going to be sanding the tire in the end anyway, and at that point isnt all the compound dissipate? Great video by the way on all other aspects.
Conspiracy theory: Tire companies created this ritual and told the pros to do it because they knew we would copy them resulting in selling twice as many tires 😂.
Definitely not for the general crowd which I’m sure sponsors are not targeting…but maybe, if they want more people into the sport/hobby, change direction/flow/etc. of the video. Consider the broad buying base.
so i see a reply to all the great job comments but the ones asking questions get no response at all? even some deleted? so real question what type of lap time difference does this give you? also with all the different types of rubber compounds avail why has joncepts not made a rubber with the feel you want right of the box? seems like quite a bit of work but am curious to the results?
Can we do this on tire that never receive this process ? I have a pair of Proline Electron clay (4 runs on a inside track ) for my SC that I would like to try
I'm starting to love your videos Ryan. Very direct and informative, yet on more of a personal level vs a professional one. Great job! My question is, I run a 2wd backslashed slash on a well kept, loamy outdoor track. I typically run more of a pin style tire, ex. Diamond backs on the fresh track to badlands if there's a lot of people and its torn up a bit. Now I normally just clean my tires every so often with simple green and that's it. Is this prosses something I should try or is it even doable on a more pin style tire or is it worth it at all at the outdoor track? PS My grandmother was a Harris too, also named my son Ryan.. Odd lol
Does tire sauce make a difference in 1/8th scale buggy on off road dirt or clay tracks? I usually just clean my tires off with water and simple green but if there is something to help the dirt not stick to them as much that would be great.
Is tire prep important?? I've recently got into RC, I have a ECX Roost 1/18 and I have no means to enter any races or anything like that. It's simply a new hobby, I've made some tweaks to my RC already, but I lack knowledge to the RC world.

Is the arrow direction is the same rotate direction on car?
can you just buy a softer compound and have the same results without all of this?

Step one: buy your pre-mounted tyres
Step two: Do up the nut
Step three :
Bash and blow out the tire again

Fair enough, here in Australia I've never seen it done to that extent, sauced yes but less than half of the pro drivers would do that
