If you get a chance at the Kentucky Derby Museum they have a booth that you can try your skills at calling the races.... I promise you it is harder than it looks......Great call
So much goes into calling a race well, and Travis absolutely nailed it. The sheer size of the Derby field demands clear, succinct descriptions, and Travis's no-nonsense style lends itself well to America's premiere dirt race for the 3yos. One of the things I love about racing is the various styles and tones of its race callers. While Tom Durkin excelled at whimsical alliteration and often injected humor and history into his calls, Trevor Denman almost put you in the saddle "let's see, where is Zenyatta going to go?.........Mike Smith doesn't want to be too far back." And if an announcer ever perfectly fit his racetrack it is the subtle, classy calls of Kurt Becker at genteel, historic Keeneland.
As far as sheer passion for horse racing and their love of the game coming through their race calls, I would put both Larry Collmus and Vic Stauffer at the very top of the list. Travis Stone seems to have this same passion and unbridled enthusiasm. A real up and coming talent with such a clear, crisp voice. Almost born to call a race.
I love the ending: "That was so much fun!"
