- Mangroves sequester up to five times more CO2 than trees in terrestrial forests. Mangroves also protect coastal communities from storms. The Soneva Foundation Mangrove Restoration project helps Ma Khaing Thazin in Myanmar restore their mangrove forest. 1.5 million mangroves were planted in 2022 with another 1 million in 2023. In total 2.5 million mangroves on 1,000 hectares will mitigate 1.5 million tonnes of carbon. The project is registered under VERRA.
