Why This Walking Dead Villain Needed To Die Way Earlier

  • The Walking Dead, at one point, was one of the biggest shows on television. Adapted from the comic books of the same name, The Walking Dead, started out as an extremely true adaptation of it's source material. Though one Walking Dead characters story arc was extended a little too long, and the show suffered because of it.

The governor didn’t over stay his welcome. He had a great story arc, if anyone over stayed their welcome it’s the whisperers. That arc felt like it lasted waaay too long.

This whole video just feels like making a problem out of nothing - barely anyone thought this. Too Far Gone is literally seen as one of the best, if not, THE BEST, Walking Dead episode(s). Negan on the other hand, did overstay his welcome; the whole arc being dragged out waaayy too much. People literally stopped watching during that period.

  • @YoRezzi

The Governor’s 2nd arc was a problem that became fundamental with TWD, and that’s dragging on storylines and like mentioned in this video, trying too hard to divert expectations. I don’t agree with the point in this video about the climactic battle episode itself because it was still fantastic, but it should’ve taken place at the end of season 3. This was also the problem with the Negan arc as it was dragged out too long. Even elements of the whisperer & commonwealth arcs in the final 2 seasons, not to mention the horribly unnecessary pope arc in the final season. If they stopped pacing the show horribly to align certain moments with episodes 1, 8, 9, and 16 then the show would’ve felt a lot more fresh and could’ve been an all timer that didn’t have to go past 10 seasons, but sadly we didn’t get that

I'm in the minority in really liking the finale of season 3. Throughout the show we got plenty of big chaotic firefights, to the point where it got a bit stale. The season 3 finale instead has the group outsmarting their enemies by luring them in with a trap and then letting loose. The strategic ambush felt more like something you'd seen in the Breaking Bad/BCS universe and I didn't mind having the group win simply because they were smarter. Plus even if you were disappointed that we didn't get a big action scene we still got it a little later with the Governor anyways so everyone is happy.
And on a side note, I don't think the Governors season 4 story was just redoing his origin story. The theme of the season 4, if not the whole show, is about being too far gone, as the episode title indicates. Hershel, who acts as the groups moral compass, talks to Rick in the premiere about some people being too far gone. Rick seemingly almost was but now tried to come back after the events of season 3 by taking up farming and avoiding violence. The Governor initially tried to do the same with his family but as time went on it became clear that he was too far gone.

I think most the changes were good to the governor, but I completely agree they dragged it out way too much. That season 3 finale was the turning point for me, where the show stopped being good.

The Governor is a great character going from a charismatic golf playing leader (not entirely sane btw) to a Psychopathic non compassionate killing machine! His arc was great and honestly WAY better than Negan's. He brought a dynamic to Rick and the others that made the survival aspect of the show terrifying. He is not someone you would want to come across in the apocalypse which you can say about all the villains but this man had no remorse in the end. He was great.

The only antagonist that was enjoyable to watch for more than one season was Shane because you get to see him start as a good guy being someone you could root for and slowly watch him become darker when faced with increasingly desperate situations that slowly strip away more and more of his humanity - it also cuts deeper than conflicts with other antagonists due to his familiarity to the group as it’s original de facto leader and his complicated relationship with the Grimes family

He definitely didn’t overstay his welcome, he’s the last TWD villain id say that about, not just because he’s the best villain by a mile but because the others are all mid and drug out. Negan is good but other than his introduction which is the best character introduction in TV history he’s a 6.5-7/10 character overall, The governors arcs are incredible

While I agree with the first part about S3 being super anticlimactic, I remember really loving the Governor episodes in S4. I remember the debate on whether or not he could be redeemed, if they would change the show up from the comics. His two bottle episodes were very interesting at the time and “Too Far Gone” is one of the top five TWD episodes.

  • @EWall1498
    @EWall1498 11 місяців тому +1

I totally agree with this. The Governor was fine, but the decision to extend him for another half season wasn't. The arc should've ended on a peak, but instead it muddled on. I never liked the first half of season 4 (barring the midseason finale). The disease plot bored me and the show just felt like it was adding filler until it got back to the delayed prison attack plot point.
In retrospect, this was a red flag. Most of the problems this show had was from extending plotlines way farther than they needed to be. The amount of times this show chose to tread water rather than get to the next plot point gradually became infuriating. As the seasons went on the quality of the writing went down overall, and mistakes like this went from easy to forgive to impossible to sit through.

I nearly never say this, but I'm really glad I didn't knew the source material before I watched the adaptation. David Morrissey was so good it was exactly the plot that demanded he went total crazy at the end. He was the most complex TWD...well I was gonna say villain but he truly wasn't. He was a leader, made a small village actually functioning, did factual research against the plague, and had emotional connections also. Not even one antagonist put this up again, hell even our protagonists either. It was the first ending for me when they killed him. Sad that the showrunners didn't do a The Boys kinda spin and threw the comics in the bin to create a coherent and logical story.

Nah I disagree, I liked his arc quite a lot, especially over Neagan’s arc. His dragged on for so long and it killed the show for me. Along with the writing decisions to kill off certain characters yet neagan was given a whole new character development and you know the rest.

It's true that the end of season 3 feels anticilimactic and the Governor's return feels disjointed, but I do like the character development Rick has in the show, with him becoming "softer" during his farmer arc and thus asking Philip for peace.
Early season 4 is also the golden age of the prison, where it's population was the highest. It's basically when things were running the smoothest. I always enjoyed that.

I think too far gone and live bait a some of the greatest episodes of the whole series, the death of herschel n the governor are major. The splitting up of the group made them stronger and gave characters depth. It was very good, so i diagree with u, the governor was around just ling enuff and basically dies on the show where he dies in the graphic novel

I never read the comics (been trying to get the hardback collections tho) and after learning about comic Governor, I actually think I like the show version better
Nor did I think he dragged on too long, Negan absolutely dragged to long and then hooked up with Maggie from what I heard (I was genuinely upset when I heard that, it feels so wrong)

I agree with you. I prefer the original version. The horrible, violent and dark Governor.
The show tried to make relatable and gave him a new family and a redemption arc. Why? It was unnecessary. That guy, for me, was the opposite of Rick. Although it is better described as a way of showing what a person with power could be in a finished world. Just taking what he wants and tearing up what he doesn't like. An extreme...
It wasn't a perfect arc. I don't know why people liked it so much. It was long, boring and anticlimactic. But I have to admit that Negan was more boring. Too many seasons, stretching the drama...just to try to maintain an audience that little by little left.
