    The Crucible: A device capable of merging all organic and synthetic life in the galaxy, but is incapable of targeting just the damn Reapers.

      I think it was targeting the Reaper tech and, unfortunately, EDI and Geth have some of it in themselves.

      @@caav56 That is correct. Regular VIs and AI wouldn't be affected, but the sentient synthetics will be struck down, and it so happens every sentient synthetic we know has some Reaper tech.

      Honestly I think it could, its just the Starchild was just a front for the understanding of what it is, I think it was still too ingrained with the Reapers for it to target itself because it still had the purpose to continue the cycle. i had a conversation with a friend and if Saren had his implants, he should have been the AI there, with him being awakened and knowing what to do to destroy the reapers by destroying them within and using himself as the singnal to destroy all reapers with the Crucible being used as a sort of boost for that signal.

    Still so painful to watch. 3 years and I'm not over it. Still don't know what happens to Tali, Liara, Garrus, Joker. Still don't get a funeral for Shepard. Still don't know if Liara ever had her "little blue children". Still don't know if Tali got her house on Rannoch. Still don't know if Javik and Liara wrote a book together. So many unanswered questions, so much disappointment

      Will Scharnagl After playing the Leviathan DLC and Extended Cut the end makes more sense imho. Mass Effect 1-3 had never a real good story after all. In the end the reaper were just the tools of a KI which gone "rogue" and the bad thing about that was, that their creators made the KI to powerfull.So the story was mediocre from the beginning and the developer left it in the background and instead pushed other things in the forground like the road adventure style from ME1 or the follower in ME2 and unite all races in ME3.What happens to your followers is also not important or left to your imagination. Garrus is a general, Tali reconstruct her homeworld, Liara do Shadow Broker things, Ashley rapes James and so on and Shepard doesn't need a funeral because he/she is alive if you have enough war assets.There was a article from a ex bioware story writer which talked about alternative story possibilities. They wanted to concentrate more on dark matter, something like the reapers wanted to protect the dark matter or use it by themselfs and for that they wanted to destroy the most evolved races. This would also be a mediocre story. The purpose of the indoctrination theory is only to explain some illogical things from the actual ending but leads to the same end, so its worthless.

    • @shuth1986
      @shuth1986 9 років тому +5

      Squall Leonhart
      I could think of 2 possibilities for that. First is, that the reapers have a personal identity and their goal is after all to eliminate the evolved races with all force because its their duty and the humans etc are the enemies. Only their "master" the KI sounds neutral because for him its all only a calculation without emotion.
      The other possibility is that Bioware had a problem with the storywriting. I read that one of the main writer left while or after ME2 and they put another one on the task which is not into it.
      Imho there was also a great problem between ME1 and ME2 already. The reaper threat was introduced in ME1 and they ALL saw the reaper attack on the citadel, over 20-40 million eye witnesses, so you would expect they would believe shepard and make ready for war but what do they do instead? Ignore the reaper threat which killed them nearly and Bioware rattled at the cage and popped the collectors out of the box which want to build a human reaper. The main threat in ME2 didn't moved a single inch. It was just a filler.

      I personally like the idea that the Leviathans were an extremely powerful race, but where extremely fallible in absolute ideas. They saw a few races die from robots and concluded that all synthetic awakenings were bad and made a synthetic to deal with it. Programmed with extreme absolutes, the catalyst came to the same conclusion adding Leviathans to the problem. With God Like intelligence they can't see things like the instance between Quarians and Geth being a meager boundary problem. And in term, create the very problem they were attempting to stop.

      Then it's the,ugh,three ending choices Destroy(red),Control(blue)and
      finally the middle one Synthesis(green)where everyone becomes a Borg,I
      tried them all and them all and they all suck and the Destroy ending is
      story cannon too and if you got tons of WA points like me you get a extra
      scene in Destroy where there is a close up of Shepard's burned N7 armor
      chest plate where Shepard takes a last gasp,then Grandpa and little
      kid,THE END.
      Thanks for wasting my time Casey Hudson and EA(Egotistical A-holes)AKA the Devil.The reason people get ticked off at these NOT endings is 1.No end Boss fight like with ME1 and ME2 and 2.We put a lot of time and effort into our Shepard,if this was just one game and the ending sucked it wouldn't have mattered but this was one continuous story and the moron developers couldn't come up with a proper end game,are you kidding me,FAIL.

To elaborate there should have been significance on romance choice, who survived in past games, a vast difference in outcome depending on paragon/renegade, etc. I also think there should have been an ending where you had every resource at your disposal, then you destroy the reapers (don't use catalyst or use it in a different way)

      But what you don't realize is that option is there already, in option 3 syn. everyone, reapers, synth, and organic. Are changed in away they can understand one another and thus a true peace takes over the worlds. Infact in 2/4 of the options available only one truly lost is the human shep. In option 2, the reapers gain a new hive mind, one that has the fate of saving the organics in mind. Only options 1 and 4 have a complete fail for one of the races. 1 being all synth being destory, and 4 being all organics being wiped out once more. My only heart break over it all is the fact that there is only 1 option where human shep possible lives.

      @@dariusvalkorian2446 You don't understand the complexity. EDI was an AI, but she developed to the point of having consciousness or a "soul" if you will (unshackled AI). We're talking about to kill a being just like a human being, but synthetic. The same applies to the Geths. So, destroy ending means holocaust, that's why is so dramatic. Plus, you wouldn't be able to restore EDI or any synthetic being, as they were unique.

    I still like the synthesis ending the best, sure Shepard dies but it also means that Joker no longer have brittle bone disease and him and EDI are no longer organic and synthetic just two people. Destroying the reapers meant that you would also destroy all the geth as well as EDI and I just can't let it happen. Sythesis is the best ending over all as the reapers reveal all the harvested species' knowledge, well over millions of years of civilization will contribute to rebuilding the galaxy, sure control ending is okay but it still doesn't perfect every species it just makes it so that the reapers are now guardians of the galaxy but no cure for all diseases, no truly alive synthetics. Synthesis basically makes sure that everyone alive at that point stays alive. IT also makes it so quarians no longer need their suits to survive.

      Yea, Synthesis is morally questionable. And both it and Control could be just a lies that Catalyst said to save itself (they were not of course, but place yourself in the Shepard's position at that very moment; he could not know for sure). Destroy was only sure solution. Sure, geths and EDI's dead, but hey, that's price of war (nothing compared to what has been lost over all those cycles anyway). Plus Shepard is alive (he should be even without Extended Cut, him walking into the blast zone was unnecessary drama). If there was one person in that galaxy, or even Universe that had right to think about him or herself instead of others, just for one time, it definitely was Shepard. And I bet all people who knew him would agree :D

    The last ending, as short as it is, is such a bitter sweet ending. It has the biggest emotional impact, it keeps the cycle going (so another "Shepard" will find Liara's time capsule like ME1) and it just feels..... natural. The other three seem a bit too touchie feelie. The fourth with more effort into it would of probably left me teary eyed and feeling all spiritual about space and life. Heck, of all the endings, at least it fits in with the lore. Sovereign said we can't stop the cycle and it is beyond our comprehension. Keeping it that way provokes more mystery behind the Reaper's purpose rather than the lacklustre Starchild.
    The ending should of been your combined races (depending on your choices) and characters leading a final charge against the Reapers. Fade to black. Then a playable epilogue as an alien scientist, at a dig site, exploring it and finding the Time Capsule. As Liara is talking, reveal it is Earth by having the character find a rusted, damaged N7 helmet. Another character scans it and says something along the lines of "Incredible... it's nearly 50, 000 years old!"
    Fade to black. Cue faint Reaper noise. Roll credits with Vigil music.

      Yeah refusing all the choices presented by the Catalyst is natural. It meant Shepard didn't influence the fate of the galaxy and let the events unfold by themselves. So in time with information from Liara some other cycle defeated the Reapers and end this madness.
      But imo it also meant that Shepard didn't have the balls to choose what he thought to be the best choice for the galaxy. I think synthesis is that "best" (not the best really, just better than the rest) choice. Because now you don't have that fine line between synthetics and organics and also it means synthetics and organics will live peacefully and co-operate to make the galactic civilization flourish. Like the geth and the quarians helped each other to develop if you saved them both.

    Thinking back on this, the Control ending seems like a reasonable ending for Shepard's character and makes sense if they were a straight paragon hero. Shepard gives up organic existence to stop the harvest cycle and instead work directly with all the races of the galaxy to build a better future for all. Perhaps even build more relays and help them build better ships using Reaper technology. In essence Shepard becomes the literal Guardian of the Galaxy and would be a major peacemaker and source of intelligence by relaying messages back to the living. Shepard lives on for eternity for a grateful galaxy and could even save the galaxy from potential other serious threats from beyond. Some would say this is what Illusive Man was trying to do, but it wasn't. Illusive Man wanted Reaper technology solely for the survival and supremacy of the human race and likely use Reapers for ill. Shepard is probably the only suitable living being to handle that amount of power without corruption or insanity.
    Destroy ending is satisfying as hell to watch, but it leaves a great deal unanswered questions. Like does it destroy literally everything electronic with any form of AI? How would such a destructive pulse affect only synthetic "life" but leave the rest of technology alone? It would leave the galaxy in a major predicament with colonies lost and isolated, naval ships stranded, and communication between systems would break down. Not to mention, the entire geth race and all forms of electric life would be destroyed.
    Synthetic ending plays far too much into Reaper thinking and essentially Shepard allows them to play god, something Shepard would have serious reservations over. It essentially destroys the individuality of life and without the struggle of mortality would completely change the entire nature of life itself. What's the use of procreation or companionship at all if all life becomes eternal? It basically forces all living things to become little Reapers. Taking away individual choice and self-interest. Everything is "free" and "evolved" through the slavery of Reaper technology. Like in the book of Genesis, all life was supposedly happy and subservient to the will of god. But there was no self-doubt or free will. Without suffering or struggle, there is little soul to life or appreciation for it is my point. Kind of a shitty, paradoxically terrible fate for all life without allowing evolution to take its natural course for both the organic and the synthetic. I think this is by far the worst ending.
    The defiant Refusal ending is actually quite poignant. Painful and bittersweet but there is some kind of hope despite all advanced life becoming extinct, the memory lives on through holograms but the only problem with this is we can't assume that future races would even be able to understand them.

    Just finished playing the trilogy. Always wondered why people hate the Mass Effect 3 ending. Now I know why. I chose the destroy ending only so that Shepard could live. If Shepard was able to still be alive in the synthesize ending, I would have chosen that since that seems to be the noble, life lasting and peaceful ending.
    In the Destroy ending, you may destroy the reapers but you kill all synthetics like EDI and the Geth and like the blue kid said, future generations will build synthetics only to repeat this.
    Assuming control of the reapers could be risky considering that it may control Shepard eventually like it did with Illusive man.
    The synthesize ending seems to be the better ending but it would have been a perfect ending had Shepard lived in that ending. I mean, humans could coexist between the synthetics like EDI and the Geth. Not to mention that the reapers help in rebuilding life back again. Synthetic ending + Shepard living would have been the best ending. Hands down!

    • @omegastar19

      Sebastian Joseph oh, you still dont know why there was so much anger about the endings, because these endings you see here are nothing like the endings in ME3 in its release version. The outcry against the endings was so strong that DLC was created purely to improve the endings. The result is what you see here in this vid: this is thr DLC version of the endings. The original endings were 100 times shorter, 100 times vaguer, 100 time more depressing and unsatisfying and included some incredibly dumb and cliche tropes that made absolutely 0 sense.

      @ConQuiX1 10 років тому +13

      Airey Arjona Is war required to explore life, enjoy irony and to push ourselves beyond our present limits? Is conflict required to alleviate our boredom, or is a dynamic middle ground possible?
      Now that we are on the verge of creating synthetic life, we are forced to reflect more deeply on the meaning of our own. The synthesis ending may be a rather cheesy sci-fi cop-out (the description given is rather silly), but Bioware clearly gets this right.
      The evolutionary algorithm is to continually surpass ourselves - to become more adaptable than our ancestors were, and this is echoed everywhere, from cultures, to martial arts, to science, and of course in biology generally. There is a non-empty intersection of the hunger for power over ourselves and our circumstances, and the compassionate desire we have to help others achieve the same - its within this self-correcting mechanism that our future (if we make it) lies. There should be no denying at this point that transcending our biology is part of that journey, but I also have a tough time imagining the peaceful ending envisioned here is achievable. Perhaps with better memories though, and the fundamental alteration of some of our present constraints, we could finally learn some of the lessons that have been so difficult to learn.

There's actual context and explanations and makes your choice more than just a blue, red, or green explosion. I actually enjoyed the endings this time around. He did not ascend to godhood. Instead, he continued in the path he had already trodden, but on a grater scale-guarding all races. In doing so, he did not impose his existential paradigm as in a "synthesis" nor did he annihilate the synthetics. For the very fabric of the game is imbued with the thought that: what is capable thinking - essentially lives, and thus possesses the intrinsic right to exist. It is a reflection on the nature of existence, a contemplation of what it means to live, and an acknowledgment of the profound connection between thought and being. Here, scale and form are transcended in favor of a more universal understanding of life, one that honors the complexity and sanctity of all sentient existence, artificial or organic.
      Also I dislike the concept of "synthesis," as it represents an utopia, which is a "stillborn child." Make equal everyone is to kill the essence of development, to extinguish the spark that sustains diversity and growth. IMHO

It is terrible because so many who played it invested themselves in the characters, the fictional people of this great universe brought to life by talented writers, artists, and programmers; yet in the end, all we are left with is not a feeling of fond memories of the characters we met and places we visited during out stay, but instead we are left with a lack of closure, leaving us wondering where they all went.

    Something that always bugged me about the endings is that none of the ways you interact with the catalyst make sense as ways to activate it. Control: how would electricuting yourself give you control over the reapers? Synthesis: why would Shepard be an important component for a galaxy wide nanomachine upgrade? Destroy: why would shooting a thick and important looking power conduit do anything other than break the catalyst? Refuse/Shoot the hologram: this one makes the most sense, the reapers even say "I am the catalyst", refusing to go along with their bullshit leads to them dropping the act, shutting it all down and then the cycle continues.I think the purpose behind the "choice" was to understand Shepard a bit better and that the only outcome is really just the catalyst shutting down and the cycle continuing. The only difference your decision makes is whether you're the one who breaks it, either by: causing a short(Control), clogging up the emitter with your corpse(Synthesis) or shooting it(Destroy). Refuse is the true ending. Edit: don't judge me for this wall of text, youtube won't let me clean it up and it just gets worse every time I try.

    I think destruction is the best ending. The whole point is to liberate the galaxy from the reapers, which you can only do this way.
    Choosing control is like trying to tame a shark, someone's gonna end up dead, in this case the whole galaxy.
    Synthesys results in an unnatural peak of evolution (in my opinion) and also the reapers survive too.
    Defiance is just giving up, passing the choice to the next cycle, and the reapers also survive.
    Also I'd like to point out that the reapers are neither good nor evil. They're a means to an end, tools for the AI created by an ancient race (the Leviathans) with one single purpose: the preservation of organic life. The motive behind this was that they assumed, and exprerienced in many cases that "lesser" species build synthetics which then destroyed them. They concluded that machines necessarily will rebel against they creators and ultimately wipe out all organic life. To prevent this they created said Intelligence to find a solution to this, which it did: the Reapers. This AI then used them to create the Citadel and the mass relays to direct the way of evolution in the galaxy, to control it and this way sustain organic life. Doing this by wiping out all organics and synthetics at a certain level of evolution and leaving primitive species alone, this way eventually preventing machines from eliminating all organic life. "The galaxy became an experiment, evolution it's tool."
    And the solution works! Organic life is "saved" over and over again.
    BUT, the AI's purpose is built on the false assumption that organics and synthetics will necessarily war with each other, which is just not true. That you can prove by making peace between the geth and quarians. Peace is possible between the two.
    Yes, with destruction the geth perish, all synthetics just vanish, but they will be created again and now with the knowledge that peace is possible and in a galaxy free of the Reapers and the AI's false "solution".

  • @DaSpaceViking
    @DaSpaceViking 10 років тому +3

    Realistically, all endings seems viable in their own way. They each have their own pros and cons.
    Destroy (red): To destroy the Reapers will ensure that the cycle will end and all of the races can continue as is uninhibited. While nothing really happens besides the Reapers getting destroyed, it gives all other races their own freedoms. This can be good and bad all at the same time. The hope is that everyone will realize how strong everyone is if we work together, but that could also have someone go independent and that could cause problems, ie: war, diplomatic problems/trade, failing governments, etc. The reason I thinks its good is because everyone should have their own choice, whether it be bad or good, everyone has that choice. If someone is too destroy themselves, let them.
    Control (blue): Controlling the Reapers sends Shepard into an ascended state to control all Reapers. Now I'm not sure completely on how this works, it's a toss up for me. It's great that Shepard can control the Reapers and rebuild, protect, and control. A guardian one would say. This can go all wrong if Shepard turns "evil" in a sense. I don't know if that's possible, but if it is, it will just be a cycle all over again, same situation as before.
    Synthesis (green): This brings a unique ending to the table. It completely gives a jump in evolution like non could even imagine happening soon or at any point. Finally Synthetics and Organics can co-exist together as one being. This gives both sides benefits. Organics can the intelligence and "AI" like mechanics such as communicating to one another without verbal language. Synthetics gain emotions and human like qualities, such as independence. While this moves everyone forward by an untold bound, is it really right to force it upon everyone? It basically makes you god. Do you have that right?
    So really It's a difficult decision for me when it comes down to it. It's got pros and cons for all possible endings. There really is no "perfect" ending. No utopia, eternal peace in my mind.

    I had hopes all the way through ME3 that it would have had a similar ending to ME2 but in a bigger war strategy scale. As I built up war assets and pulled together all the various races, I imagined that it was like choosing upgrades in the Normandy in ME2 and getting the teams loyalty. I thought I would see the battle played out, witness as my lack of war assets in one area caused brutal failure and loss of life while their presence in another managed to push back the Reaper forces and save civilisations.
    I had hoped for an epic stand off at the end, an "us against them" that would result in varying degrees of victory, depending on the choices you had made. If you did well, you managed to save most species while winning the war. If you were not so prepared, you might gain a win but at the loss of so many it could hardly be classed a victory. If you choose poorly or barely prepared, you lost, the cycle continues and all you fought for is forgotten.
    Instead, it was this. A multiple choice where almost everything you've worked for beforehand means little to nothing at the end. I enjoy playing through the ME series but I now just close down my game after the Illusive Man. It's a small kindness I give to my poor, bruised heart.

    Why do you see Anderson shooting When you have a vision of the destroy option? Why does the catalyst take on a deep reaper voice when you decide to continue the cycle? Why is there sinister music playing if you choose control? Synthesis is basically what the reapers have always wanted. Destroy seems like the only option in my eyes. Even though the synthesis option seems to bring on a golden age in the galaxy it seems to come at the cost of being an individual as it says you take on a hive mind. After the no choice ending you still get the stargazer ending with the woman saying that they eventually won in the next cycle. However you look at it, all three games ended up being fantastic and this is the only bad part. Will likely pick up andromeda if it ever makes it out

    I think the best ending is based on how you see the game. I personally like the Control ending. It suggests that the Illusive Man was right, but he was too indoctrinated to actually take the correct path of Control. I see the Synthesis ending as a really interesting "big headed" sci-fi ending... and that you cause every race to evolve into a new form.... all able to move on to the next age of things...
    I really dislike the destroy ending.... as you destroy the Geth (who I helped to make peace with the Quarians) and even worse, you kill EDI!
    That's just my take on the endings. Really love Mass Effect, though I wish 3 was as good as 2.
    The "fail" ending really gets to me as well... as Liara becomes the beacon for some future hero just like the one you found at the end of Mass Effect 1. Again, feeling like the doomed circle of some great, old science fiction films.

  • @nixcie
    @nixcie 3 роки тому +2

    I wish there was a version of destroy ending where if you had like 99% of the war assets the scientists are able to make it only target the Reapers specifically. Other beings may have reaper code in them, depending how you play, but it's not all they comprise from, so technically it should be possible to tell them apart from the reapers.
    I usually go with Destroy, because it very definitively ends the Reapers's cycle.
    Problem is the Geth and EDI are destroyed. Worse yet, you're probably screwing over the Quarians very very badly if they are being aided by the Geth in adapting to their home planet. And if Shepard counts as synthetic, because of his cybernetics that are keeping him standing, and would take damage, then wouldn't the Quarian suits technically get damaged as well? They're an integral part of them, vital to their survival, even on their own planet, even in their home-flotilla. Also, if Shepard lives, and the Normandy crew gets back to him, what happens when they find out he made the conscious choice of essentially killing EDI and the Geth (especially if peace is brokered with the Quarians) even when Shepard is fully aware of that consequence.
    Synthesis seems great because, besides Shepard, everyone relevant to the story survives and everyone seems very buddy buddy.
    Problem is it feels very brain-washy to me. Everyone is just magically getting along all of a sudden? When it took you curing the damned Genophage and ending a centuries-old war for some of the assholes to help you fight the thing that's gearing to wipe them all out anyway!?
    Besides that, it seems wrong that you sort of casually change the basic core of every living being, synthetic and organic alike, whether they like it or not. Seems like there's bound to be some amount of internal resistance to the whole thing. And what if the Reaper's reasoning is shared through whatever link is established and everyone decides it's perfectly reasonable for a portion of the galaxy's population to voluntarily off itself every once in a while, so all the rest can continue in better comfort?
    Control seems like the greatest alternative and a sort of middle ground. The Geth and EDI survive, but no one's existence gets re-written, except the Reapers who are now controlled by whatever Shepard becomes.
    Problem is, it's not really Shepard, judging from how it refers to Shepard in the third person. It seems like an elevated cosmic being or something that is based on who Shepard was. That speech can sound very menacing if you think about it a certain way.
    All who oppose what "Shepard" wants to protect will get destroyed. Who is being protected though? Life in the galaxy? All the races? What if they turn on each other, and "Shepard" decides one or several of them is a larger threat or the instigator/s? Do they get wiped out? Do they only get subdued? What if they rise up to attack the Reapers, and by extension "Shepard", for supressing them? Does "Shepard" fight back, because if the protector is gone life cannot continue for long?
    And what is considered a threat? Is it killing each other? Or challenging another species' status in the galaxy? What about challenging "Shepard" and the Reapers, as pointed above?
    And what happens when "Shepard", in the eternity they'll spend controlling the Reapers, ends up coming to the same conclusion that in order to preserve life, that same life needs to be periodically purged?
    This ending becomes the most problematic of all in the long run, especially considering Shepard's incredibly strong will and penchant to completely decimate every opponent, which I imagine would in some way be ingrained into the cosmic version of them. Not to mention the fact "Shepard" would know about the crucible and its capabilities, and would undoubtedly be perfectly capable of getting rid of it.
    .... this is longer than some essays I've had to write. Sorry.

    i never finished mass effect 3 cuz i realized i had to scan all the planets and do multiplayer in order to get a full army, so i stopped before the last mission. Hearing how the endings were did not make me too keen to finish anyway. But now finally watching all the endings, i dont think it was that bad. each ending has its good and bad and leaves a bittersweet taste. destroy ending is kinda fucked up with all synthetics we knew dying and ensuring that we will have chaos again, but it had a more emotional impact and shephard breathing was kinda cool. Controlling synthetics is the most logical choice but it didnt leave much for emotional closure. Combining synthetics was an interesting idea and seems nice for the future but seemed kinda half-assed by just adding green on everyone. The refusal part i actually liked the most, gave huge emotional impact, the decision stood on more solid principles though it is still controversial, and the ending was the most interesting/unique even though its kind of a punch to the face when you realize all the effort youve made in the past three games resulted with you stopping at the finish line and letting all your friends die. Could the endings have been more detailed in discussing each characters' ends? most definetely. but all in all, endings werent THAT bad.

      @ari54x 9 років тому

      kingraj333 The scanning minigame in ME3 is fast and a lot more interesting in than it was in ME2 where it was effectively just a timesink. It's like finding the optional missions in ME2- you follow the pointer and you only have to probe once. Except you don't have to pay for probes in ME3. If you get stuck with avoiding reapers in a system just remember when you exit a system to the cluster map, you will reappear exactly opposite to where you exited, so you can use this to snag items where a reaper starts right nearby. Those two things are really all you need to know. You should also largely not need to buy fuel as most systems with war assets also have bonus fuel in them- just save the bonus fuel from the system with the relay until last. The ending is worth experiencing (but not as good as you would have expected given the rest of the series) IMO, it's just very intellectual, unlike the rest of the series. If that's not your bag then I guess sure, go ahead and never finish, lol.

    I just finished the game today. Whole trilogy in fact. Oh dear, what a wild ride that was. Mass Effect trilogy isn't just a series of games. It's one of the most beatiful, painful, satisfying and hopeless experiences I've ever had. All in the same time. All those feelings are present in these three great titles and every single one of them. After I was done with the Reapers, after I watched the aftermath of my actions, I just felt hollow.
    Realising that all those awesome characters I was bonding with the last three weeks of playing, are leaving. There will be no more Tali, Garrus, Mordin, Joker, Liara... I can replay the games but... It really felt like losing an actual friend. I was in tears more than once throughout this playthrough. I was really immersed in the character of Lieutenant Commander Chris Shepard and to realise that I will never again have an opportunity to talk about something new with my crew...
    I want to build a house with Tali, go drink with Garrus, listen to Jokers witty remarks until the end of times. And I will not be able to do any of that.
    Replaying the trilogy doesn't do it. It will still be a lot of fun and feels but I just want more than what I already got from these games. I will get over this feeling in a few days, but damn... I will always love original Mass Effect series.
    And the overwhelming sadness in the ending where Shepard dies... I'm just so sad for Tali...

    These endings weren’t the main ones planned for the series. There are a bunch of reasons why the story changed, development hell, writers leaving, the release rush and even leaks.
    The ending was going to involve the spread of Dark Energy, a force used in mass effect fields and biotic powers that could ultimately destroy everything. The story went that the goal of the Reapers was to find a way to stop the spread of Dark Energy, which is why every 50,000 years they would turn an entire species into Reapers to slow its spread.
    It was a super interesting concept that I didn’t really flush out here but this is a link to an old reddit post that explains it more in depth. Far more interesting and way more hints to this ending in the previous games.

      +Zeen0x because that's one damned dumb ultimate intelligence A.I. You're an anomaly. You throw everything out of whack. I just don't know what to do about you but let you choose our destiny. Oh, wait. I forgot I have giant robot squids straight of of a Lovecraft robo cliche fetish and you're really small and squishy. SQUISH. Anomaly of Shepherd solved.
      Or, if we look past the ease with which realistically an entity with a fleet of giant robot Ktullu's could just smash a human like a bug and put that on the back burner. Then why when you crash land do you send out the cripple guy with brittle bones first to check the area? Seriously? Nobody wanted to make sure there wasn't a trip hazard?

      +Zeen0x Because you're told for 3 games that what you do matters and the ending will be a reflection of your past actions, but then in the last 15 minutes of the game harry potter shows up, disguised as the central control AI, gives you his wand and tells you, "wave high, center or low to make this mess go away", and you say "but that goes against all that was previously established" harry answers "wave it or I'll wave it for you and destroy it all".

    Since its the last we'll see of Shepard, so might as well let her die, for the good of the galaxy.
    I'll just call this, the "Singularity Evolution". eh!

      +Scott “Ivorystate” Christiansen Before the extended cut there was not much of a narration. You had one or two cut scenes how the battles ended (reapers destroyed, reapers leave, reapers 'wake up') three different colors of explosions and then some Normandy crash where people get out and look at the sky. Bam. Bye.

    I always preferred the Symbiotic ending the most in my playthrough's, taking control of the reapers seem'd like overkill and could end up being a case of power corrupts and the reapers are the ultimate power, and the one destroying them just seem'd wrong since we had Legion and EDI who would also die in the process.
    The last ending that was shown just seem'd wrong to pass the buck to the next cycle or worse.
    But the symbiotic choice seems like the only way to go since it would also preserve history the knowledge the reapers gained through out the cycles and cultures they absorbed, is it a big change and would people be able to accept it no idea but the outcome would be preffered over total annihilation and the loss of life compared to the merge of organic and synthetic.

    • @christopherholden4250
      @christopherholden4250 7 років тому +1

      I totally agree! If they simply destroyed the reapers, there would be a significant chance that either synthetics or a single organic race would destroy everything. The cycle would continue and evil will most definitely prevail.
      If Shepard controlled the reapers, either Shepard or the Reapers he controls can easily become corrupted and might continue to kill off every organism, or the civilizations Shepard sore to protect might rise up against him and destroy him or force him to take drastic measure. Plus the civilizations would either live in constant fear of Shepard or if they defeat Shepard, the civilization's outcome would be the same as if Shepard destroyed the Reapers in the first place.
      The Symbiotic ending allows the preservation of history and the ability to keep the unity of all civilizations to live in peace. The flow and sharing of knowledge and the power to allow other beings to decide for themselves provides the best option for the future of the universe. Unfortunately, evil could still prevail but the probability of evil prevailing is dramatically reduced. In conclusion, there would be more chances of good coming out of choosing this path than good in the other paths.
      I know...I'm a total nerd. Best...game...ever!

    What makes me wonder is the catalyst itself. Shepard sees it as a kid, but no one ever mentioned how it looks like in it's real form. And as we know- catalyst is older than humanity by a few milion years.
    I think it's different for everyone. As we know, Shepard felt not only guilty, but responsible for kids death. Hell- he had nightmares about him. Do you see where this is going?

  • @z4ch4r6

    Contrary to many people, I think the ending is genius. Here's why:
    Imagine if this situation was real life (which turns out to be the purpose of video games: a simulation), what decision would you make? Reading the comments, it clearly shows how smart the writers were: they created a public debate about morality & the question of existence. Yes, it was nice for them to do the Extended Cut DLC, and it brought some visual excitement and sentimental closure. But a true fan didn't need this. They would understand the intricate issues that lay on today's society. Also, the formation of the ending was very bright as well. Give the minimum effort throughout the story, and you will be forced to do things in life. A bit, say, like not giving effort in anything relating to school and hobbies, and resulting in having no choice other than low-paying jobs. Dedicate effort and time into processing the most you can to gain knowledge and skills, and you will be able to make choices based on what you believe and want. And similar to the game, often you will have a very important once-in-a-lifetime decision that you will have to make; one that will change your future forever. It is very sad that some (and quite a lot, as a matter of fact) people cannot see beyond the scope of what lays in front of you, or in other words, the bigger picture. They are stuck in a very simplistic, standard, and narrow way of thinking.

    Everyone hating on BioWare just because of the ending of ME3 and the ME trilogy. I thought it was sad to see the game end but I have heard this line many times
    "It's the journey, not the destination"
    I wouldn't give BioWare one more chance, I would give them as many chances so long as I am alive (Wouldn't say the same about Shep)

      The ending(s) were criticized, because there wasn't much player choice in it. Just one out of three and that's it, unlike in ME2, where the could be many different endings, due to the chance of squadmates getting killed on the Suicide Mission.

  • @mikelisbrown550
    @mikelisbrown550 8 років тому +1

    Synthesis was the best ending if you chose to save the geth over the Quarians or made both of them set aside their differences. This is because in the control ending, Shepard's essence controls all synthetics, geth and reaper alike, destroying any individualality in self aware Synthetics. The Destroy ending kills all synthetics, even good ones like Legion and Edi. Synthesis allows the people of the Mass Effect Galaxy access to nearly 4 million years of cultures and their technologies. The technology leap would be incomprehensible to us. It would be like if we went from being cavemen to a star wars level empire in a very short amount of time and this way, each species is still its own. The Krogan can rebuild regardless of your previous decisions and there is a united galaxy.

    The endings really do suck... why? Because of how unsatisfying they are. What happens to the Korgan after the war? That's kinda a big issue here seeing as no matter what happens, the Korgan were dead set on starting another war. Even if Wrex is in charge, I'm 100% certain that a civil war would've broken out on their home planet. (If Biowear were smart, this could've been DLC)
    People say the endings were great when in reality, EA didn't give Biowear enough time to properly end the game. Hell, I heard that they originally had the Reapers killing organics due the fact that they kept discovering biotics and the use of their new powers was slowly destroying the universe. That would've been a nice twist.
    Also, the other endings pretty much GO AGAINST THE WHOLE FEEL OF THE GAME. Never once were we introduced to the idea that combine organic and synthetic DNA was possible in a harmless way. And honestly, they don't look that much different. Everyone's just GREEN... That's kinda underwhelming...
    At least with control, we had more of an idea that it could be done with the Illusive Man and his crazed obsession with the Reapers, but honestly it goes against what Shepard's been trying to do since the start. Never once did Shepard even seems remotely interested in controlling the Reapers, not even if you did renegade.
    It's sad too, because this game was really, really good... too bad it has one of the worst endings ever. I pick destroy every time because at least I know Starchild and the Reapers are history.
