      I just want to know why there hasn't been an advertisement on a film or a tv series with women (or men) that are undisputedly beautiful (or handsome) Black/Africans who just so happen to have legendary, epic African Hairstyles whether they may be dreadlocks such as yours, an afro, braids and so on. I mean, the book entitled "Hair story" written by those legendary writers (Ayana D. Byrd and Lori L. Tharps) was good but there needs to be a film showing African hairstyles with men and women on a much grander level. By the way, you're dreadlocks are beyond epic. You're more than qualified to have a major impact on influencing the world with your great hairstyle.

      XrockythedogX The thing is, as Chescaleigh says in her video, there is no historically awful context for a black person painting their face white, whereas with white people using "blackface" there is a history of abuse and oppression and racism coming from the "minstrel shows" in which white performers would apply blackface in order to mock, stereotype and assert racist agendas against black people in order to make the white audience feel justified in their oppression of black people. So yes, whilst you may not consciously think you're being racist, the action of putting on blackface contributes to racist oppression and ignorance is not an excuse for doing something that harmful. Google blackface and see why it is so hurtful.

      *****
      Martin Luther King Jr. said to work together for equality. Why be so militantly against white people if you so strongly believe that they have all the power? Doesn't it seem more logical to gain their support and be allies, rather than attempt to win a social war against them? Singling out white people as the enemy can only further the race division. It does way more harm than good, and in fact, it is racist.
      If you can lump *all* white people into a single racist group in your own mind, then white people lumping *all* black people into an ignorant thug group is equally as reasonable and acceptable. Neither are right. If you want someone else to see you as worthy of respect, then you better respect them too. Otherwise, *you are no better than them.*
      Skin color should not matter. If skin color matters to black people, then how can you expect it not to matter to white people? Think about what you're saying.

    ***** for some reason I can't respond to your comment. Take a look at your posting settings. There's a lot of nonsense in your comment that I won't waste time responding to, but I will say this, nowhere did I say that content I don't agree with should be removed from the internet. Please don't put words in my mouth. There's a difference between advocating censorship and encouraging content creators to understand the consequences of the material they produce and educate viewers so they understand the consequences of media they consume. Critique is not censorship.

      ***** lol why would I lie about not being able to reply to your original comment? what purpose would that serve? that makes literally no sense.
      No, I did not "band together" to get someone's videos removed. He removed his own videos. I did not instruct anyone to flag his videos or request he remove them. That was a personal choice. Again, you have a lot of nonsense in your comment, but the last thing I'll say is free speech does not mean free from consequences or free from critique. Best of luck to you!

      ***** " bfvsgf channel should be taken down cos that has multiple instances of spousal abuse and domestic violence"
      These are two consenting adults who play pranks on each other and are well aware of what is going on.
      Domestic violence is an actual issue that should be taken seriously.
      Two very different things.
      I have a lot of issues with what your comment said but this part in particular rubbed me the wrong way.

      ***** Personally, I would have ditched that relationship long ago, because you know, I could not deal with that, most people probably couldn't. But there is an obvious difference. They don't touch strangers without their consent, cause you know, that's illegal. They also don't terrorize strangers. All of their public pranks that I have seen were innocent jokes.They made their own prank channel called prank vs prank. They obviously are aware this is happening and are open to it, and if not, then one of them is staying in a relationship they shouldn't be in, but that's a different issue in itself.
      I probably would not consider any of those things domestic violence either, really. Me and my boyfriend mess around like that as well, not the same extent but it happens, and I wouldn't say either of us are "abused".
      You are making domestic violence sound like it is no big deal when it is by saying these little things are abusive. I have witnessed domestic violence, it does not look like that.

      Livi's Vlog I didn't make this video for him or any specific person, hence why no one's name is mentioned. There are plenty of people who needed to hear this information and learned something outside of that person's fans. just because bad things happen and continue to happen doesn't mean it's not worth talking about why they're problematic and attempting to educate others. there are plenty of people in the comments and who've emailed me because they've gained a new perspective based off the content I produce and share. Just because the information is not new to you doesn't mean it hasn't reached other people.

    Something that really bothered me about the exact timing of Shane's apology video (which, like you said, ONLY referenced his use of blackface, and not any of the other instances of racism in his videos) is just the timing. Why now? Why only during THIS shitstorm of people calling him out for racism, and not any of the other times people have said he's a racist (something he himself brought up is that this isn't even the first time people have said this about him and his content)? I'd hate to be a cynical asshole, but I can't help but wonder if he did this apology now, knowing that his movie is coming out soon (which, by the way, apparently features "a black hobo eating his own shit", according to Shane), because he didn't want any negative publicity surrounding him or anyone thinking he's a racist, because it would potentially hurt the box office draw for his movie?
    If he's been doing this type of shit for upwards of 7 or 8 years and people have been calling him out CONSTANTLY for this (and so many other things that you brought up), why is the only time he makes an apology video for this use of racist "comedy" happen to be the same time when he's getting ready to put out a movie? I'd like to believe that, on some level, he's genuinely sorry, but the timing (and, again, the fact that he only focused on his use of blackface and nothing else) makes me a bit uneasy, that's all.

      The more fishy thing about Shane's apology video is that literally earlier this same week, people on twitter were calling him out for being blatantly racist and he responded "get the fuck out my face" and "i don't care". He responded to so many people saying that he literally does not care how racist his content is. BUT the exact day of his movie release, and also mere hours after the LA Times called him out for his racist behavior and Tumblr was going into an uproar to report his videos and get his account terminated for breaking the terms and service of UA-cam (for use of abusive language and hate speech violation) He suddenly "changed"! He started deleting all of the videos that document his racist past as evidence to terminate his channel and he deleted all his tweets about how he didn't care and he magically started to take racism seriously. Yeah his timing is a bit too convenient for me to believe.....

      The number of people representing the groups is irrelevant to my point, at the end of the day more unarmed white people are killed by police than unarmed black people.
      It's a simple statement of fact, police brutality is not a racial issue, it's an issue the US needs to address - but it has nothing to do with the colour of someones skin, it's about police response methods.

      Nail on the head. She mentioned micro-aggressions and that's a good example of them. It sounds like an innocent apology on the surface, but it's actually a attempt to blame the people he hurt, while saving himself from doing the work to make up for it. Good apologies don't save face and are *active*. Micheal Vick apologized for animal cruelty by serving a relativity long voluntary prison sentence and did hard work with animal rights groups. Jack Abramoff also served a long sentence for bribing senators as a lobbyist and now dedicates his career to lobbing for lobby reform.

    Dear Franchesca
    I'm not sure if you will see this but I feel like I need to write this anyway. Let me start off by personally apologizing I have over the past few years watched Shane's videos. I have over the years noticed certain people taking offense to content in Shane's videos and always thought they were being overly sensitive. I realize now how wrong I was. Instead of just assuming they were overreacting I should have tried to understand why they were upset. I Should not have just dismissed them and assumed they should get over it
    You have made me see that just because something is done in a comedic way or intended to be funny does not mean it is not offensive. I have never thought about why people get so upset about things such as blackface and I finally understand why it is so offensive. I Sincerely hope you accept my apology and I swear to you that I will try to be more understanding of things like this. You stated your argument so well that it has actually made me think about things differently and I appreciate that. I wish I had as much courage as you do to stand up to people even though you know it will mean a lot of backlash.
    You should be very proud of yourself. :)

They keep saying I’m from South Africa and other places in Africa even though I’m from Britain and my ancestors are from Jamaica. I just don’t understand why some of them keep doing this to me when I have said nothing to them? I can see who they are, they know exactly what they’re saying to me so I just don’t understand. Stephanie Saveria Even though this is an old comment I thought it was important to reply because I can explain how this works. This might be a little bit to read, fair warning. But since you said you don't understand it I think it would be beneficial if you did. So there are a couple of aspects to this. We've been told since Reagan (and before but it really kicked back into high gear with him) that Americans are more or less John Wayne. Well... John Wayne's onscreen persona, that is. So when you've been raised with the idea that you've never had anything given to you and never had help from anyone so you and you alone have earned everything you have and accomplished everything you've ever done without any help from anyone you internalize that and believe it. Even most liberals I think would be offended if you tell them they didn't earn their house or their car or something even though they didn't. You paid for it inside the system we have worked out but you didn't build that system or maintain it on your own so no, that car you're driving was not the result of your hard work and yours alone.
      You had help with every aspect of life and so did everyone else in America today. But that idea is offensive because we're told "you didn't earn that" is the same as "you don't deserve that." And telling someone "you don't deserve that" is saddling them with the "welfare queen" stereotype. And that is the worst thing you can be according to American society. So when you bring up racism or sexism you're saying the status quo favors some over others and the ones who are favored did not earn that status. Now that's true of course but these people have been trained since birth to resist that truth because damn it, they earned everything they had and saying otherwise is an attack on them. That's also part of the Southern Strategy. The message is that white people created this society and now everyone else wants to take away their spot at the top which they earned. So minorities (mostly black) want to be equal to you without doing the work to get there. From their perspective white men are at the top because they deserve to be. Got to be, because if that's not true that would mean they were given things they didn't work for and that is too painful a thought to bear because that would make them welfare queens and put them in the same category of the people they've been demonizing for decades now.
      The other part of it is change is scary. If you stir the pot you will be hated by a lot of people, period. That's why feminism is so scary to so many people, including a shocking amount of women. The status quo, even if it's bad for you, is more comforting in a lot of ways than change because as long as things don't change you don't have to face the unknown. You don't have to be uncertain and wonder what the future holds. Change is scary for a lot of us and that means we want to avoid it at all costs. That's especially true if you're in a privileged position. If things change you might lose that. And then what will you do? Will your whole life change? Will you have to change the way you think and act? How will the world change around you? That's scary for many, many people. Bringing up racism and sexism means you either have to acknowledge that's the way it is and that it's not fair or work to change it and face the uncertainty of a new and scary world. Both of those are intimidating so it's best to pretend it doesn't exist and intimidate people into keeping their mouths shut so you just don't have to think about it.
      So anyway, I hope this helps.

    I'm so glad you made this video. As a person of color I have become increasingly uncomfortable with just how normalized racism dressed up as comedy fodder is widely accepted on youtube. Racism dressed up in a feather boa and sequins is still racism.
    It's so frustrating that this disturbing trend isn't being talked about because the more this stuff is perpetuated the less this community feels that it is for me as a woman of color. And the more it feels that youtube is no longer a safe space for everyone. I wish more content creators gave a shit about this because I'm tired. I'm so tired of all the willful ignorance, and of the fact that people will run in droves to support every elevation of human rights and yet when it comes to the conversation about racism within the collective YT community you could hear a pin drop.
    Thank you for using your voice and not allowing others to dictate when and how you use it.

    It always amazes me how people get offended about someone else being offended by something. Lol, like i truly don't comprehend it. If someone posts something and it didn't sit well with you, and you decide to share how it didn't sit well...I don't understand why people feel the need to yell and be upset at you for not liking it. AND THEN it is the sameeee people who will say "If you don't like it don't watch" or "If you don't like it get off youtube". But, aren't those people themselves doing the same exact thing they're yelling at someone else for doing? It's OKAY to disagree with someone. That's the beauty of being an competent autonomous human being. We can think and have opinions and they may differ from others and that is perfectly ok. What's NOT okay is bashing someone especially, telling them to inflict self harm or any etc. because you don't feel they should feel the way they do. You can talk to someone and share your disagreements without resorting to negative and hurtful comments.

      For all of those defending Shane Dawson you need to understand the history of Black Face and the effect or harm it has on the black race is important. Once you understand that you will comprehend what this video is about. White people pretending to be black for comedic entertainment is not ok (in some sense). The african american culture has to grow from being the stereo typical thug, thief, ghetto princess, and uneducated person; and anyone who dresses in black face to characterize those people are ignorant and shameful. Shane Dawson pretending to change and apologize for his actions that got him the fame and success he has today is foolishness and I will not accept it. However, I am a Shane Dawson subscriber and have been for almost 5-6 years. His comedy, parodies, and vlogs are actually pretty funny and caught my attention long ago. He isn't specific to making fun of any particular race and will forever have many characters that stereotype all types of races. I, a black woman, am not offended by his black face for a few reasons. For our culture to grow and move past being a stereotype we need to educate those on what offends our people and stop throwing the race card to any white person who offends us. The human race has existed for millions of years and we only have recently understood the idea of equality. Don’t get me wrong we have A LOT of work ahead of us. *Women and equal pay hint hint… but putting focus for one person personifying a black person and acting as their exact personality is not where our problem lies. Shane Dawson’s actions only justifies the actions of the many black people in America who are the stereotype and need to move forward and help our race become better. Black men and women… PLEASE educate yourself, create, change, react, learn, and be better so we as a race can move forward and understand who we are, where we came from, how far we have come, and grow pass the stereotype.
      This year I am dressing up as snow white. I know for a fact no one is going to make me a news headline for dressing as a white character. However, my dear white friend who dresses as Tiana (princess and the frog) better not paint her face black or else she will be on CNN next week. *Sarcasm.
      I guess all I am saying is Shane sit down and shut up. Be you. Be honest.

      Btw, how else will we understand that he is portraying wendy williams without getting into full character? Shall we bring iron man's robert downey jr. into this topic of conversation for being a black man in tropic thunder? We need to not be so sensitive about things that aren't the real reasons for our black struggle and I assure you its not white people portraying black celebrities or black characters. Let's tackle Nicki Minaj's effect on the black race first.

      chescaleigh I agree with many things you said in your video and what you did is good and right. UA-cam has a lot of racist arenas, I am finding. If you can you should also call out blacks who act equally as vile towards their own (show by example).
      In regards to the blond video you did, I watched it and I am sure I laughed but lets face it. you were making fun of white girls (ok ignorant white girls) and saying that black people have naturally blond hair as an excuse was really out there. I am pretty sure you are not connected to the people in the pacific ocean (who are a unique population (a freak of nature for lack of a better term)).
      I don't think your video was racist (not even close) but i am making this comment based on reading some banter you had with someone in the comments section (cant find it because i left the video to go watch the items in the description box).If someone white became offended, i couldn't say anything to them because i am not the one who suffered hurt. You have to own that not dismiss it. Describe what is racism act vs. offensive. My understanding of black face (you can correct me, i purposely did not search it) is an tool used by white americans back in the day to portray blacks as retarded and sub-human.

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  10 років тому +9

      Annmarie busu again, blonde hair is not exclusive to white people and blonde's are not an oppressed minority. using blonde hair to iillustrate that the character was white, is not racist and nothing in that video contributes to the oppression or mistreatment of white people. it's unfortunate that so many people cannot understand this, but life goes on.

    • @annmariebusu9924
      @annmariebusu9924 10 років тому +9

      chescaleigh maybe my comment was not clear. i did NOT equate the black face with your video. i even said your video is not racist. To be clear, what i was saying is your video can be considered offensive or even hurtful to others. when you applied the blond wig it was clearly meant towards white and not anyone else. blacks aren't the only dark skinned on the planet but you can clearly tell the black face was meant for you.
      Your hands are not racist but they are not clean. that's where i am coming from and that's is the ammunition that will be used to challenge your words right or not.
      however, my comments are nothing to take too seriously, you can dismiss them. they are my person view and not meant to cause you ill will.

    I honestly got a "poor me" vibe from Shane's apology. He was more preoccupied with his tarnished image and being called a racist than his actual behaviour. It became more obvious when he talked about how he is afraid those racist UA-cam videos will colour people's judgment of his "film" (I use that term loosely). It was so self-centred.

    The Oxford English Dictionary defines racism as the "belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races" and the expression of such prejudice. I completely agree that blackface is racist and inappropriate, but personally I believe something like "shit white girls say" is also racist, because it attributes those qualities to all white girls. Just because it doesn't have the same history as black racism doesn't change the fact that it is inherently racist IMO.

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  9 років тому +27

      Racism in any form is not acceptable. Double standards are never justifiable. I am not disagreeing with you, just saying that "shit white girls say" IS racist. Although it may be worse due to the context behind blackface, it still isn't acceptable. While I understand that the video was to make a point, you're still attributing the "racist stereotype" to all white girls. Which is racist.

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  9 років тому +20

      Daniel Jensen talking about microagressions i've experienced from white people is not racist. stereotypes combined with discrimination, prejudice and institutional power is what creates oppression/racism. "shit white girls say" is not oppressing anyone. if you're mad or offended by it, that's fine. but it is what it is. and it's not racist. the end.

    As a somewhat "older" lady (40's), I don't necessarily find Shane Dawson's humor to be my cup of tea. But what I can recognize is a contrite spirit and a willingness to humble himself and learn. Did he say ALL the perfect things in his apology video? No. But I give him so much credit for being willing to put himself out there. He's a very young man and has grown up practically on the internet. I give you major props for standing up again the "machine" that is his fandom. But I also give him the same. Let people grow. It's not an instantaneous process. But he's moving in the right direction. Also, he is not responsible for his followers. I'm sure it's frustrating for him to have people "speaking for him". But that is also the monster that is the internet.

    • @MariaNNaBoBos
      @MariaNNaBoBos 10 років тому +1

      I think that by pointing out the flaws his/anyone's apology does not mean you're being too harsh on them but it serves the purpose of recognizing that they have a long way to go and the IMPORTANCE in doing so, because any kind of seemingly harmless racist act goes far beyond hurting people's feelings. It is contributing to oppression, fcs

    • @lisa_squared
      @lisa_squared 10 років тому +22

      He is responsible for his followers. These are young kids being raised by his content, the normalizing of racial stereotypes and misogyny have a huge effect on a growing mind. If you're going to be making millions from impressionable children then being a role model is the price you pay.

    • @pamsherman7727
      @pamsherman7727 10 років тому +3

      Audrey Horne I'm not how you can say he's "responsible" for the people (children) who follow him. They have parents and these parents are not properly guiding or watching their children's online activity. Once again, I don't agree with all of Shane's content, but at the end of the day, adults are responsible for themselves and children are under the responsibility of their guardians/parents. If Shane was instructing his "followers" to attack or bully, then he should be held responsible. But I've seen him ask for the opposite.

      Racism :
      the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
      or
      prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.
      it is totally possible to be racist towards white, it has nothing to do with oppression. also, my dad was taking an HR class with his work & a question asked was "can you be racist towards a white" (and might i add the guy leading the class was black) & he said YES YOU CAN. you can be racist against ANY race. hope i educated you a little.

      +QuikVidGuy Dictionaries contain the definition of words. Until dictionaries say so, oppression doesn't define racism. You can't just change the meaning of a word to mean what you want it to mean. If you think all white people are [insert stereotype] and that it justifies negative actions towards whites, then you are, by the definition of the word, a racist. Believing that a person is less deserving of respect because they are of a certain race makes you a racist. Sorry to burst your bubble.

    By you making a separation on the blonde wig/black face thing shows how the world is fucked up in a way that being a minority gives you some kind of power for people to act that way. I've been a minority for years as an argentinean in Europe and still felt like this self racism is way worse than any other thing.
    Imagine a black person acting white. That equals humor. Now imagine a white person acting black. That equals a guy that should be pointed out and separated from society. Thanks for getting the conversation started on the UA-cam community!

    Ok. Ok. Ok. I know I'm late to the party. But I really need to say something. I am black. Ok? Ok. I just felt as if I needed to clear that up. I think you play the race card for any and everything. Plus, you're very hypocritical. It's not ok for someone to joke about black people, (Shane Dawson), but it's OK for you to do "Shit White Girls Say to Black Girls"? You're putting a whole group of people, and stereotyping them as one. It makes no sense. I hate people who are always trying to pick apart every little thing that a COMEDIAN does. It's not ok for a white person to joke about black people, but it's TOTALLY ok for a black person to joke about white people. In White Chicks, two black men, turned themselves white and was a "stereotypical" white girl. I personally thought the movie was hilarious, and I know that many white girls took no offense to it. But as soon as a white person makes one little joke, they're racist. Do you know the meaning of the racist? Thinking that ones own race is superior than the others. I just find you very annoying. And you can not take a joke, whatsoever. Good day. :)

      chescaleigh I do not live with wool over my eyes. Of course I know that racism still exists, but you try to put race into every little thing. Black people are getting killed my cops for no reason, yes, but what does that have anything to do with my original statement. You seem to think that all white people are against black people, don't let a few set of ignorant white people give you a whole judgement of the race.

  • @MelissaAnelli8
    @MelissaAnelli8 10 років тому +14

    Argh. I wrote a really long response and it got eaten when the video finished. But it basically said that I don't talk enough about race because I am white and privileged and also OVERWHELMED by how little I know about it and how much there is to learn, and how I feel I don't speak from a place of at least native knowledge like I do with feminism. And as a former reporter, it becomes really hard for me to advocate for the elimination of even things I find wrong/bad art/unfunny/abusive of stereotypes because I'm one of those people who thinks the right to make the terrible stuff protects everyone. It gets really cloudy and difficult to stand up for both things - for racial equality as well as bad comedy that engages in the more subtle ways racism maintains its hold - and have failed at it before. But nothing is so easy to discern here, and we should all educate ourselves more so we can talk about it with more realism and overcome privilege. So here's my promise: I will try! Great video.

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  10 років тому +6

      Melissa Anelli "But nothing is so easy to discern here, and we should all educate ourselves more so we can talk about it with more realism and overcome privilege." whole heartedly agree! I think a lot of people are misunderstanding my intent here, but it sounds like we're on the same page. I'm not advocating censorship or saying that content I don't like has no place on the internet. that's ridiculous and nearly impossible. everyone has the right to create and say whatever they'd like, the same way I have every right to critique it and choose not to support it. My goal is not censorship, it's education. Thanks for watching and chiming in

      chescaleigh (Dude that's the first time I used that Google+ thing. I am growing.) Totally - I hope it didn't sound like I was saying you were doing that. That's just the line of friction I've had, myself, in the past, and it sits uncomfortably, and I question it a lot, and find myself completely at a loss to understand it. And that's why the conversation has to continue! :)

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  10 років тому +1

      Melissa Anelli oh no, I understood where you were coming from, but I think a lot of people, scratch that I KNOW a lot of people think I'm saying we should censor content based on my personal opinions which is impossible and ridiculous. I think you're right, we need a little of everything out there, even things we don't agree with or understand. it'd be a pretty boring place if media only appealed to our personal beliefs. Not to mention, who'd be the person to decide what passed the bar? and welcome to G+! The comments take some getting used to, but seems like you're doin just fine ;)

You also do it in a way that I think really breaks it down in to understandable pieces. In all the nonsense, there has to be a seed planted and I guess that's why people keep speaking out. They have hope that things will change if we just persevere. I share that hope with you.

    Why did I think the comments would be progressive and insightful? It is tragic down here and it's kind of sickening to know that people are really so hell-bent on defending damaging and inappropriate content.When "your fave" is problematic, CALL THEM OUT ON IT! Brushing over it because you find them funny or desensitizing yourself to that type of material is not the proper course of action. Promoting and defending the use of black-face, among other inappropriate attempts at comedy of this nature, further perpetuates negative stereotypes which actually affects lives.

    I'm just going to be 100% honest here, i'm white, but i don't believe there is such a thing as racism towards white people from people of color. I grow up and live with a family who uses racial slurs all the time and i have never found it funny at all. Racism toward people of color is real, but racism toward white people isn't real, it's just the truth about the majority of white people. And it really annoys me when white people get so butthurt over "white racism" and say that they aren't like that or "not all white people" If they weren't, why are they getting so offended? Because they obviously do say racist things, other wise they wouldn't be so offensive about it.

    I know what you mean. These "in the hood" pranks as they've been branded are quite frankly disgusting. And whenever something happens, some use it as an excuse to say blacks are this and that. Content like that should be illegal. Creating and influencing stereotypes that shouldn't be there at all and they end up ingrained into people. It's disgusting.

    You said it exactly how it needed to be said. I am guessing here you spoke about Shane Dawson but there are soo many examples of how blackface and brownface and yellowface are thrown around for "entertainment". I am glad that you have such a good perspective and that you are able to convey your message without diminishing other issues. I really look up to you because I recently moved to the US and as a person of color, being a victim about the stereotypes that surround Latin Americans, I feel, even more than before (and it used to be a lot) that as a society and community here on UA-cam that we should stand up to those people who are popular for the wrong reasons. Thanks for making these awesome videos. And I saw your video of shit white girls say in my social psychology of groups class at FSU. SO yes. Thanks :D

    Shane Dawson says the racist slurs he used in his videos are just jokes, and that his fan know that he doesn't have a racist intent or mean them in a harmful way. However, his audience, or part of it, did have a racist intent and did do harm. Dawson's fans used those words as hate speech towards Chescaleigh, now if his fans see those words as weapons and not jokes I'm forced to wonder how they see his use of blackface and racial caricatures. Was it just more jokes or the same delimiting racist mockery it always was...
    Sam Pepper may have meant the gropes as jokes but they were not received that way. They were violations! Shane Dawson may have meant the slurs and blackface as jokes but they were not received that way. They were dehumanizing and disrespectful.
    _“How can white people sit there and be like “I don't see how [blank] is offensive”. Of fucking course you don’t you aren't the one being offended by it and that’s why people who are offended are pointing it out to you and telling you it’s offensive and why”_ ~ quentintortellini?
