"We Feel Unheard": Hunger-Striking Princeton Students Vow to Fast Until Divestment Demands Are Met

Over a dozen students at Princeton University have been on hunger strike for the past week as part of a Gaza solidarity encampment on campus protesting Israel's war on Gaza and calling on the university to disclose and divest from companies with ties to Israel, among other demands. The hunger strikers are also calling for all charges to be dropped against a number of students arrested on campus in late April as part of the encampment. Areeq Hasan, a graduating senior at Princeton who has not eaten for a week, tells Democracy Now! the hunger strike was a response to the university's stonewalling. "We feel unheard at every step of the way, so therefore we resorted to a hunger strike," says Hasan, noting the long history of hunger strikes as a means of protest. "It is in solidarity with the history of Palestinian political prisoners since 1968. … We're tapping into this long-standing tradition with both Palestinian political prisoners and also in the Irish and Indian liberation movements."

Aid to Israel has nothing to do with the nexus between the pharmaceutical and insurance industry in the US which artificially raise the prices of the medicine. Hospital bills have a markup of 500%. At least three people arrested during the conflict accused of ‘collaboration’ died in custody.”

Oh please. Throughout history there have been much more intense hunger strikes than a bunch of rich kids pretending to hunger strike - and I can’t name or tell you the reason for a single one of them. These students are hunger striking because they’re lazy, too lazy to actually do something active for their cause. Being so entitled that they thought they wouldn’t have to go more than a couple of days. I would bet my house that this guy has secretly consumed food during the last week - he shows no signs of dysfunction which would be quite severe by now. Shaking, inability to stand, low comprehension, stomach cramps, sweating, slurred speech, fainting, throbbing headaches, sunken eyeballs, unclear thinking, unable to follow conversation, etc. They are a bunch of fakers.

Some of our greatest civil rights activists (who laid the foundations for this generation) used fasting/hunger striking as a means of protest, however, those methods worked for those times. This is a new century. I might suggest activists use their creativity and ingenuity to _think outside the box,_ inventing new methods while maintaining their commitment to peaceful, non-violent civil disobedience, that is, the exercising of their civil liberties.
