- The new Apple MacBook Air M1 is here and after everyone I know has been bugging me to try it with its new M1 chipset, I gave in and bought one. So let's see how someone not using Apple's programs does in terms of battery life, photo editing, video editing, and more in this M1 MacBook Air real-world test.

1:32 while your friends have been very impressed with the performance of the new M1 MacBook Air, your workflow is probably more what the computer is actually intended for. I have had my M1 MBA for about 2 days and so far it is my favorite laptop ever.
This is probably one of the most well explained reviews I’ve seen so far. Also appreciated that you tested it out with Adobe since that’s also what I use to edit stuff. I guess you just got a new subscriber here 😉

Very nice 'real-world' review. I'm getting tired of seeing benchmarks and it's nice to see someone with a real appreciation for battery life.
Yes, more memory is usually the better choice and I really can't wait (nor even imagine) what the next Apple Silicon machines will be like. We've got a pretty exciting couple of years ahead of us.
I'm also a bit tired of watching video editing demos, but this is UA-cam and the fact that you can even try to edit a video on the MacBook Air is pretty amazing.

I think it’s a smart move for Apple to move to its own chips. Hopefully, this will encourage/force intel, etc to raise their game. I only just bought a new MacBook about 6 months ago and so it’ll be a couple of years before I need a new one. Seeing as I don’t really use a laptop on the move, I might get a Mac mini or an M series iMac.
This is the perfect in-real-life-use case video that I needed. I've been a lifetime windows user and I think I'm leaning more and more towards apples stuff
as someone who switched to Mac for educational purposes and experience with the OS, I can say its overhyped and not worth it.
I've also been a windows user since forever and never owned a Mac until the M1 Macbook Air and I gotta say that, for the money, this is the most powerful ultrabook out there at the moment. Mac OS is very difficult to use tho, lol

@@marbesto I'm not referring to the laptop capabilities, a third of the people on the Internet who are raving to get one do not and will not even use all of the power of the m1 they just want it just to have it which is fine, but I was referring to the OS experience, and how every UA-cam worship us and everyone says windows is trash. although macOS is more polished than windows the overall experience was meh at the best. they both have their pros and cons. for what I need windows suits me best but for the more simple task and day to day, I would say macOS does it just fine
Real life use isn't just video editing but UA-camrs can't seem to understand.

Came in here to get convinced to get a Macbook, and that little glimpse of the Blade Studio made me want that instead. What a beautiful machine

Most people misunderstand what's great about the "unified memory"
If your CPU has an integrated GPU, it already has to share the system memory with the CPU.
The great thing is that it's on the SOC, and that allows both the CPU and GPU to have very fast memory speeds.

YESSSSSS & a bit of Meh😬 I use some Adobe apps like Photoshop and Illustrator and they feel a bit choppy and slow BUTT Everything ELSE, OMG IT FEELS LIKE I’M ON A JOURNEY TO OUTER SPACE FFS!! MY M1 MAC RUNS MULTIPLE LAPS AROUND MY OLD DELL WINDOWS LIKE LITERALLY FAST AS HELL!! Overall, I highly recommend the laptop though just keep the Adobe software in mind if you use it!! Ooh also I forgot to mention that I got like 21 Hours of Battery life🤯🤯
@@siddharthjagwani yes! I figured you’d love it. Excited for you. Check out the Illustrator beta on Creative Cloud. I believe it’s optimized for M1 and they added a cool repeat tool to it. Photoshop beta will hopefully be around the corner. InDesign too because I live in those 3 apps.

You've definitely helped me a ton with your info on this man! 🙏🙏🙏 I run Premiere and shoot with a Sony A7iii not the siii so this should handle my footage even better than my current desktop. 😅 I'm going for 16 GB of RAM. Not only is it good for now, but it helps future proof the laptop as well.

I've wanted a MacBook for years and finally pulled the trigger on the M1 Air this last weekend. Since 16gb was a month and a half out, and some research I decided to just get the 8gb version (with 512gb ssd). I use it for light FCP editing and some LR and PS. I've been extremely impressed so far. It feels weird editing 4k footage and exporting out of Lightroom on a computer with just 8gb of ram when my main PC is running at 32. Needless to say, sometimes it's nice to edit a vid real quick on the couch on the little MacBook Air. No regrets here!
Do you still think 8GB was worth it after one year?
@@Sana-hp9on Absolutely. I use it almost daily and it handles everything I've thrown at it. I forget it has 8GB sometimes to be honest.

I think in a few years, it’s gonna crush!! And more importantly what it will force the industry as a whole to do, which is the real exciting part in my opinion. I’ll hold onto to my 2015 MacBook Air for a bit and possibly grab a 2020 13” MacBook Pro if I decide to upgrade within the next year. Apple said 2 years. But I’m guessing more like 3-4. Restructuring software architecture is time consuming. I’ve always applauded apple’s ambitious nature, even when they have fallen short at times. But moving what equivocates to a global industry at this point to shift gears is going to take time. And 2 years is well, ambitious if nothing else.

I ordered my MacBook Air yesterday with 16 GB ram and 500 GB STORAGE but is coming on December 23
I ordered the same yesterday, mines set to arrive on the 30th, maybe the specced-up ones are slower to ship?

@@KriticalMA Yeah as far as I can tell, no store is carrying any version of M1 with 16 gigs of RAM on hand. The specced up ones do take longer to ship. I’m waiting on a 16/256 air to arrive. Ordered on Thursday and it says that the computer will be delivered on Dec 30
@@Dan330i it has nothing to do with colour. it ships slowly because it’s basically a “custom made” and not a base version, and that takes labour work such as replacing the parts you opted for upgrading when you bought it.
as well as, how many people ordered custom made ones.
I upgraded to the m1 air after my 2013 pro had screen issues haven't had it long enough to make a proper judgment yet but this thing is crazy fast and so far great for music production great W for apple on this one

This was a great video. I bought a Macbook air '13 2020 about 2 months before silicone released. I'll wait till they get the bugs straightened out in a few years before jumping ship.
Actually the unified ram is fast for a gpu. That way gpu gets large amounts of memory and cpu gets the faster gpu grade memory. Also the copying of data between the cpu and gpu takes lots of overheads which can be avoided in case of unified memory.
I did the same test with the same spec fo MBAM1 and final cut pro and it blew through 4k RED footage like butter.
This will be a great baseline test for pre optimised software. As soon as the non apple software gets optimised for apple I'd love to see a comparison.
I code with mine and it is absolutely an impeccable beautiful experience. Love my macs

It’s been noted that the swap file Max for the M1 is 2 gigs. Thus the bottle neck.the 16g would be a better choice content creators. It’s basically an iPad with a keyboard.
The Pro or the Mini would be better for this type of workload. You want the fans for extended workflows beyond 7 or 9 minutes.
The Mini specifically , of the 3, has the best thermals. With that it will operate at the higher speed longer.

I have the 16” MBP for work and there are three things I don’t like about it. The battery life is okay, but nothing to be excited about as electron apps like VSCode or Slack just slurp at my battery. I actually don’t like that it has to be thicker than the 2018 15” just to be able to have decent thermals and decent performance and finally the thing is constantly over 100°F if not higher when it’s at idle. So I’m looking forward to the new M series Macs. I hope the 16” gets thinner but with multi day battery life with a 10 or 12 core CPU.

Battery life on mine is soooo good lasted at 98% after about 1hour and 30 minutes
The battery life makes me jealous, but I think I’ll wait for the m2 for optimal software compatibility
