It is much easier for you to live in Singapore than for your wife to live in Japan. You don't have language barrier in Singapore while she would face that in Japan. That's a big determinant in the quality of life you will have.

I personally feel that you’ve made the right decision...Japan has a lot of pros but the cons you mentioned on the video is something long term, that can’t be solved in most cases. Singapore is very safe/clean, and it’s geographically in the right place to travel around Asia, which is a cost saver for holidays as well. SG is definitely one of the places I would relocate to.

Hello Ghib san I’m a big fan of your VLOG! 😁 The CPF contribution for Singaporean/PR is actually 20% from employee and 17% from employer up to a max cap of S$6k gross monthly salary. So if your monthly salary is $6k, the total CPF contribution will be 37% of $6k which is $2220 to CPF account, and net salary of $4.8k to employee pocket 😅
I didn't realize that I've already visited Japan 10 times, and seen its different prefectures and regions at diff times. and seasons. I really enjoyed it over the western countries because of its unique culture and sceneries. But at the end of the day , it's always Singapore waiting for me. For schooling, total cost of education, yes optional but in reality will almost always include extra tuitions which average about sgd10k/child/year. And if your child need special education like dyslexia, autism, etc, the bills doubles easily.
I totally agree with your point, natural disaster, in addition to earthquake and typhoon, volcano eruption in the certain cycle is also a huge risk in purchasing a house in Japan.
Hi Ghib, for education, outside of the school fees you'd still need to pay for schoolbooks, excursions and enrichment programmes, CCA programmes etc chosen by the school. But these are more than offset by Edusave top ups by the govt every year. Also you will get Baby Bonus when your kid is born. Do keep in mind that choosing different schools eg those that have IB etc will also have different and perhaps higher costs.
I personally like both countries and feel that they are both great places to live in. You are very knowledgeable and have done your research well. You're making me want to live in Singapore. I lived in Japan for 7 years and returned to the states in 2018 since my father was ill. He's okay now, though but has to receive treatments for his kidneys and also had to have heart surgery. I was around during the Tsunami/earthquake thing in 2011. We lost power and water. I lived in the Tohoku region from 2010 - 2011, 2012 - 2015. I moved to Tokyo in 2015 and left in 2018. Tokyo wore me out and wasn't good for my mental health and I was terribly overworked and the higher cost of living didn't help either for the amount of pay I was getting as living in Yamagata-ken, it was easier to pay for my medications, rent, and foods...Tokyo, not so much...but in some ways I do miss Japan since I was over there so long...even Tokyo. I got so used of the earthquakes, it got to the point where I didn't even notice them and the rocking would help me sleep, which is ironic since I come from an area of the US where earthquakes are incredibly rare (east coast). lol Sounds like in general, in Singapore, you can actually save more money compared to Japan and the country itself looks nice. I would like to live overseas again at some point in my life. I'm curious of the weather and all that now. I was working at an international preschool in Tokyo....what type of job could a person like me get, being from the US, in Singapore (if this pandemic wasn't going on)?
If you really want to, you should just try, we still exhibit some form of colonial mentality which helps pave the way for westerners in jobs that have to do with consulting, sales, customer facing. If you are in Tech its a lot easier. Education wise, can be harder but you could try applying at United World College Singapore. There are also plenty of business facing roles in tech companies that require someone who can speak Japanese and English fluently as they are trying to expand their businesses in japan

Just talking about Work culture: Though we've not reached work life bal like in most western countries, we also don't have cases of people who can actually work until die. Working hours in Japan is unhealthy and the corp work culture can be toxic and punishing.
That depends on companies. This whole “toxic working culture” thing has been repeated like a broken record that most companies (especially the large ones) have changed it to a certain degree.

No, buy HDB occupy it for 5 yrs then rent out entire flat. Next try to own a small private property, move in. You can't own a private property to buy a HDB but the other way around is ok. So don't sell the hdb to upgrade. If later want switch back to HDB, you have to get rid of the private property first.

Can’t argue about the safety factor. I’ve tremendous admiration of the Japanese people’s resilience in the face of natural disasters, but no matter what has been done to avert them nature has a way of slamming hard and with no notice. The fairly recent earthquake of Mar 2011 was particularly difficult due to the combination of events - earth quake, tsunami and the bitter coldness - the loss is still felt today. In peaceful times Singapore is ideal because of its central location with friendly neighbors. However, with hardly any natural resources, it can be in real dilemma if cutoff from the rest of the world. Imagine how disastrous it could be if imports are locked out from traditional sources due to this pandemic.

Did you know that singapore can also feel earthquake in some areas? Haha, it is true. It is very low "feel" at, if i remember, around north eastern or eastern region, had a small scare from Indonesia earthquake. western region didn't feel it due to more solid bedrock foundation. Do checkup on the websites regarding singapore earthquake stuff. Singapore government does recognized that some region in singapore is slightly affected. Take note that singapore has hot spring in sembawang. No onsen though, do find it out.

Singapore does have their strengths and flaws like all countries. As a Singaporean having the privilege to study and live in Australia for better part of my twenties, there are many things we take for granted. Sure, wages in some sectors need to be better, but in exchange, the incremental costs will need to be offset against consumers ultimately. We may not have four seasons to enjoy, but the consistent climate is something that we are assured. Staying in public housing is not necessary an ownership of the property, but it allows the housing to be redeveloped when the lease is up, a 99 year old building may not exactly be safe to stay in. It may be 'boring' to stay after a while, but our geographical location allow us to travel regionally for a quick getaway and yet come back to our nest at the end of the day.
For a start, I think you should consider applying new house from HDB, enjoy the low cost housing since you have no children now. Even if u do, u can ask yr in law come stay with you if you need help with child care :)
Buying real estate in Japan is more a consumable. Usually a house is worth 0 after 20 years and only the land has value. Do you think it will be a better investment here than back in Japan even with the 99 years lease?
You can stay in a hotel room during holiday anywhere. Why would anyone wants to pay the monthly mortgage house bills and utilities by buying expensive property anywhere just for the sake of faking it rich SMH😂
@@bikingfire it's almost impossible to get that kind of high rent rate or return of investment and still affordable for individual investors to buy the property, especially because the big real estate companies will flock and flood the market and therefore create real estate bubbles and drive the buy and sell prices of all housing markets up and also this will cause housing rent markets drop because buyers or owners are willing to accept lower rent in hope for better resale value in the future. So it's better and wiser to sell and just rent in a rising real estate bubbles and to buy them only when the prices took a dive because the bubbles have burst during recession (usually every 5 years period)

If you do get a kid, make sure you get him to study hard seriously, a good school will really benefit them in terms of the environment and the quality of their schooling life. This is coming from someone who barely passed their PSLE(Primary school leaving examination) hence I hope your kid gets the opportunity to experience best schooling when he comes about

Darn right about the transport situation in Tokyo and Osaka though! I couldn't stand the commute in Tokyo so I found a job and moved to the outskirts . I think one main advantages of Japan over Singapore is that Japan is a big country and so you can freely move to everywhere you like.

Overall i hope you make a very good investment and commitment and singapore is safe like japan and singapore has a metropilitan convenience and your craving for food and shopping is totally accessible. Tax in singapore is low because we do not provide high benefit or pension to citizens. We are not a welfare state, so everyone saves for their own well being and retirement

i have relatives in taiwan and korea, and i feel that the stress due to education in Singapore is much more relaxed compared to those countries, and they also have much less free time as they have to attend cram school etc... so i feel singapore is better in that regard. Not very sure about Japan, but if i had to guess it would be similar to those 2, However i have heard in Japan it is easy once u get into university and is hard to fail in there, compared to SG universities.

What I wanted to emphasize is the fact that education in Singapore has hidden cost beyond just paying school fees, as I've heard of various ways to gain a competitive edge: - volunteering to gain favor into more prestigious schools / donation (for enrolment) - supplementary classes / courses (geniebook.com/packages - checkout the cost of using this) - tuition I'm not making a comparison, I'm just sharing about what I've seen / heard of interesting cases in SG

It is really the parents problems, if they know how to balance it, the poor kids need not suffer as much. The government schools (public schools) in Singapore are good. They offer quality education. Of course, there are some "better" government schools in Singapore but on the whole, all government schools are comparable in quality of education. The teachers are all trained by the government , all schools have the same syllabus and the students take the same exams (such as GCE exams). Besides, if your child did well in primary school, he or she will be offered a 3rd language in addition to English and Mandarin.
As I am a Korean, I totally agree with the safe environment, education, English & Chinese speaking opportunities, international career improvement and good accessibility for travel only except living costs 😂
Can look somewhere in the north for cheaper housing. And can get yourself an agent. Go for OH MY HOME they got a fix rates much cheaper then the 1 and 2% standard rates.
Depending on which schools attending, the independent schools fees is relatively higher than neighbourhood schools. I didn’t know public primary school fees is this cheap $3-$4 per month?

Singapore HDB and Condo are well maintained, the garden around are well taken care and clean.

This is not exactly true. The 17% from employer is not considered as part of your monthly salary.
Also depends on your age
You got the point. As mentioned in your previous, where you buy depends on where you want to live.
Of course, if you are not in a hurry, you can do BTO which will reduce the cost of the apartment rather than buying resale.

That’s right, lots of people don’t realise how low taxes are in singapore and that capital gains are tax free too. Australia tax range from 30 to 55% and that there are taxes are world wide income, including capital gains, bank interest etc. And only certain Low income can qualify to get pension from the government.

Just talking about Work culture: Though we've not reached work life bal like in most western countries, we also don't have cases of people who can actually work until die. Working hours in Japan is unhealthy and the corp work culture can be toxic and punishing.
That depends on companies. This whole “toxic working culture” thing has been repeated like a broken record that most companies (especially the large ones) have changed it to a certain degree.
@@roccoanthony8930 my friend went to intern on a Korean company just several months back... so works starts, lunchtime the staff eat together ... then they Nap together, then they work, after work they drink together till late, go home sleep and repeat. It’s highly frowned upon if u don’t follow this apparently.

Ghib, 3 and 4 room hdb units are quite easy to sell so even if you decide to stay in Japan in the future you will not lose out too much.
Buy a HDB first..later when situation and condition allow..upgrade to private property...However,do take note that most new condo and some private landed property also 99years..
No, buy HDB occupy it for 5 yrs then rent out entire flat. Next try to own a small private property, move in. You can't own a private property to buy a HDB but the other way around is ok. So don't sell the hdb to upgrade. If later want switch back to HDB, you have to get rid of the private property first.

Actually I am surprised that Japan’s houses are less expensive, I always thought Japan’s houses are very expensive.
I moved to Singapore to study and work myself and adore Japan as a travel destination, but it's interesting to hear your perspective as a Japanese living in Singapore! The only part that doesnt really work out right now is that we're stuck in a tiny island and are not able to travel :(

Can’t argue about the safety factor. I’ve tremendous admiration of the Japanese people’s resilience in the face of natural disasters, but no matter what has been done to avert them nature has a way of slamming hard and with no notice. The fairly recent earthquake of Mar 2011 was particularly difficult due to the combination of events - earth quake, tsunami and the bitter coldness - the loss is still felt today.
In peaceful times Singapore is ideal because of its central location with friendly neighbors. However, with hardly any natural resources, it can be in real dilemma if cutoff from the rest of the world. Imagine how disastrous it could be if imports are locked out from traditional sources due to this pandemic.

Yes we ALL should!! Unfortunately, we have very many entitled people who reckon it’s not enough - government have not met their expectations for:
- me to have an easy good life
- where the government should never make any mistake
- government get me a high paying easy job
- government let me buy a big nice house and car for next to nothing
- Public transport should be like clockwork running 24 hours, never break down and must be half empty all the time
- All manual and or dirty work to be done by other people but must not be foreigners
- No foreign people be allow to work in any company
- government must tell me everything and get my agreement before doing anything
- government must be absolutely transparent and accountable TO ME (regardless of whether they are doing things for the good of Singaporeans and Singapore)
- Opposition can be any Ah Beng as long as they are against the government
- anytime I am not happy I will vote Opposition regardless of whether they can doing anything, especially if they are younger and who I reckon will understand my needs more

Did you know that singapore can also feel earthquake in some areas? Haha, it is true.
It is very low "feel" at, if i remember, around north eastern or eastern region, had a small scare from Indonesia earthquake. western region didn't feel it due to more solid bedrock foundation.
Do checkup on the websites regarding singapore earthquake stuff. Singapore government does recognized that some region in singapore is slightly affected.
Take note that singapore has hot spring in sembawang. No onsen though, do find it out.

Singapore does have their strengths and flaws like all countries. As a Singaporean having the privilege to study and live in Australia for better part of my twenties, there are many things we take for granted. Sure, wages in some sectors need to be better, but in exchange, the incremental costs will need to be offset against consumers ultimately. We may not have four seasons to enjoy, but the consistent climate is something that we are assured. Staying in public housing is not necessary an ownership of the property, but it allows the housing to be redeveloped when the lease is up, a 99 year old building may not exactly be safe to stay in. It may be 'boring' to stay after a while, but our geographical location allow us to travel regionally for a quick getaway and yet come back to our nest at the end of the day.

For a start, I think you should consider applying new house from HDB, enjoy the low cost housing since you have no children now. Even if u do, u can ask yr in law come stay with you if you need help with child care :)

I think it will be better to get a house next year or even 2 years later, considering the current economic situation in Singapore.

You can stay in a hotel room during holiday anywhere. Why would anyone wants to pay the monthly mortgage house bills and utilities by buying expensive property anywhere just for the sake of faking it rich SMH😂

@@bikingfire it's almost impossible to get that kind of high rent rate or return of investment and still affordable for individual investors to buy the property, especially because the big real estate companies will flock and flood the market and therefore create real estate bubbles and drive the buy and sell prices of all housing markets up and also this will cause housing rent markets drop because buyers or owners are willing to accept lower rent in hope for better resale value in the future.
So it's better and wiser to sell and just rent in a rising real estate bubbles and to buy them only when the prices took a dive because the bubbles have burst during recession (usually every 5 years period)

12:36 - "no wonder the rich move to singapore". sadly that's true; the singapore government would rather have more foreigners come to singapore while paying lower taxes - income and corporate - and as a result, the singaporean would have to 'offset' this burden for example: pay more out of their pocket for their own healthcare (just look at the upcoming GST jack-up).
If you do get a kid, make sure you get him to study hard seriously, a good school will really benefit them in terms of the environment and the quality of their schooling life. This is coming from someone who barely passed their PSLE(Primary school leaving examination) hence I hope your kid gets the opportunity to experience best schooling when he comes about

I'm not sure if I've been lucky but my work life in two different 大手企業 in Japan is actually pretty lax (being late for work/meetings, dress codes, 名刺交換, etc.) so I'm guessing it's mainly only applicable to sales. Darn right about the transport situation in Tokyo and Osaka though! I couldn't stand the commute in Tokyo so I found a job and moved to the outskirts . I think one main advantages of Japan over Singapore is that Japan is a big country and so you can freely move to everywhere you like.

A Japanese 3LDK is considered a 4 room flat here. You'd have a hard time finding those for 500k unless they are in non mature estates
A 5 room resale in punggol is about 450 to 500k
新築が割安なら5年まって新築が良いのでは。世界はインフレですから、シンガポール等の不動産価格は上がるでしょうが、日本は今一つ緩和が足りず、デフレ傾向が続くので地価が上がりにくいような気がします。
シンガポール在住です。学校に関してですが、安いのはあくまで現地の方です。日本から来て学校を探そうとすると、例えばインター。これは年間1000万円前後(差はありますが)又、日本人学校も馬鹿高いです。又、日本からシンガポールに入国するにはかなり厳しい条件が必要です。学歴は最早早慶以上。年収も高額所得者のみ。旅行以外ではなかなかハードル高いです。
I thought you will buy in japan but if you thiink singapore its disaster free from earthquake or 4 seasons maintenance. Overall i hope you make a very good investment and commitment and singapore is safe like japan and singapore has a metropilitan convenience and your craving for food and shopping is totally accessible. So for the forseeable future. You may sell everything and go back live in japan one day! Happy for you!

I think English is definitely the first language. I am Japanese and cannot speak English, but I want my children to be able to speak English. I work for a Japanese company, but I'm disappointed every time I see the tax deducted from my salary. Are Singapore employees also withholding tax?
Tax in singapore is low because we do not provide high benefit or pension to citizens. We are not a welfare state, so everyone saves for their own well being and retirement
There's no withholding tax. Taxes are paid annually (very simple) online with the choice of 12 months instalment.

Education can be stressful but in long run knowledge will bring wonder too..and a better life in today world!
i have relatives in taiwan and korea, and i feel that the stress due to education in Singapore is much more relaxed compared to those countries, and they also have much less free time as they have to attend cram school etc... so i feel singapore is better in that regard. Not very sure about Japan, but if i had to guess it would be similar to those 2, However i have heard in Japan it is easy once u get into university and is hard to fail in there, compared to SG universities.

On the topic of stress, it's probably an Asian thing that puts us under immense stress.
What I wanted to emphasize is the fact that education in Singapore has hidden cost beyond just paying school fees, as I've heard of various ways to gain a competitive edge:
- volunteering to gain favor into more prestigious schools / donation (for enrolment)
- supplementary classes / courses (geniebook.com/packages - checkout the cost of using this)
- tuition
I'm not making a comparison, I'm just sharing about what I've seen / heard of interesting cases in SG
@@weikitlow3035 I guess one should decide what they want. If you so kaisu and kaisi, then will do all these crazy stress on your kids. It is really the parents problems, if they know how to balance it, the poor kids need not suffer as much. Proper education is not all about grades, the values you impart to your kids are really more important.

Any true blue born and breed Singapore citizen, who has admitted to hospital for operation, can tell you their experience in the cost, waiting time and etc. There is a vast difference between a private and subsidies patient in Singapore. And don't fooled by the Medisave, Medishield, Eldershield, etc,

The government schools (public schools) in Singapore are good. They offer quality education. Of course, there are some "better" government schools in Singapore but on the whole, all government schools are comparable in quality of education. The teachers are all trained by the government , all schools have the same syllabus and the students take the same exams (such as GCE exams). Besides, if your child did well in primary school, he or she will be offered a 3rd language in addition to English and Mandarin.

Can look somewhere in the north for cheaper housing. And can get yourself an agent. Go for OH MY HOME they got a fix rates much cheaper then the 1 and 2% standard rates.
Depending on which schools attending, the independent schools fees is relatively higher than neighbourhood schools.

please also consider cost of delivery a baby in SG and infant care and pre-school fees.
