I'm hooked. I will be making flat round projects to be used as Chargers under dinner plates at Thanksgiving and smaller ones for trivets. I have made baskets and trivets and love them. Finishing is always uncertain with that awkward end, so I am thinking of trying to curl the last end piece back on itself for a hanging loop for the trivets. Your tip on cutting the end at an angle should help with bulk. Thanks, your tutorial was very clear and helpful
Thank you for making this tutorial easy! I sat down with my non sewing mother one day and made three of these. It was a fun afternoon for us and we had something delightful to show for it!
Really brilliant video. My son went to a craft fair and came back with yards of cording but no instructions. He told me about the great bowls he had seen so I went on youtube and found your great video - many thanks as i am now set to give it a go
Just finished my 60th fabric basket/bowl and you are the reason! I watch you video all the time and have really branched out on ways to end the basket. Thanks again..
Thanks! Yes, the stitch should go all the way through. That's what holds it all together- the stitches grabbing the previously coiled rows. Hope that helps.
thanks for this very well explained, easy to do, way cool tutorial . i was looking in the stores for fabric baskets, now i can make it myself. thanks again.
Congratulations! It is one of the best made how-to videos I have seen. You speak very clearly, and give plenty of tips. The video is well organized, does not drag and what you make is interesting, to boot!
I wish all tutorials I watch were done as well as this. You are an awesome teacher! I was trying to see what your tattoo said after I caught on to the teaching part :) I have Rize and Shine on my wrists.
I cant wait to try and make this. I hope my sewing machine is strong enough. My mom gave me the machine years ago and Im not very crafty. I never even used the thing but this craft makes me want to try! Thanks a lot!
Just found your videos. I have been making coiled fiber baskets for years. Even with all of that experience, I enjoyed your video very much! Fantastic instructions!
Vanessa, You are such a fantastic teacher! You have taught me an enormous amount! Your on screen presence is just wonderful! Thanks for all you do for the sewing and crafting community! ~Chrissy
u r a great teacher !you made it look so easy to make.thanx for detailed explaination.really loved it.planning to make it soon.will look forward to learn more from you.thanks for sharing !
LOVE ur channel! I just wanted to share that i spray my finished baskets with Aileen's Fabric Stiffener. No damage to the fabric but makes them much sturdier! Can be found at Joanns, Michaels, AC Moore. Thanks again!
VERY clear and organized project! One of the few sewing tutorials I actually watched all the way through. Thanks so much! You did an awesome job with this!
I love your tutorials. I am in the middle of making this basket and having so much fun I copied it to my sister in law in England, hopefully she will make one and share. Cannot wait to look at your other tutorials. I would like to make the flower
I was wondering the same thing, since I never use a sewing machine and I do a ton of quilting by hand. I think it you wear a thimble and get a large, sharp needle, you could totally do this by hand. I know I'm going to try it! Thanks for the great idea and the great video!
Triple zig-zag is more secure. Just an FYI and friendly observation. The old Singers or Japanese-made machines from the 1950's are like TANKS and are perfect for this. Some of them had 1 AMP motors for more 'umph' in making the needle pierce the fabric. Beautiful bowls/baskets! Happy sewing. :)
Excellent tutorial! Clear, concise and complete information with a relaxed, friendly and encouraging delivery. This is coming to you from a former teacher. Keep up the great work!
I like you video. When I made these I would just wrap the clothesline with fabric and glue sitting in front of the tv. When I had enough done to make a basket I would take it all to the sewing machine. That way you didn't have to sit in front of your sewing machine all day.
@PTuinman If you absolutely had to join two pieces I would put some clear tape around where the two ends meet to keep those fraying edges contained and then just sew with it as usual. Hope that helps.
@arkygirly1 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. :o) I didn't cut them on the bias. I think because the strips were so thin and the fact that I wrap it around the cord at an angle help add to the stretchiness you see. You can cut them on the bias if you want. It's up to you. I like to cut it however I will be able to get the longest strips..
I'm going to give this a try! DARLING baskets! Thank you! Maybe you can show everyone how to do a big tote using this method? I'm thinking something "beachy" to hold all of our beach things (Beach towel, sun tan lotion, Sun block, camera, good book, snacks ;-) etc. Thank you again! Regards from Texas, Halle'
Nicely done! Your video was so well filmed, your instruction clear and thorough and your baskets are beautiful. Thank you for an awesome tutorial. I think I can make one now!
I think you are wonderful, its cute the way you make things look easy its a good thing !!! Thank you so much for your lovely ideas and time , god bless !!!!!
I'm Claudio's wife and I wanna say to You thank you for your videos: I love your Language and your channel too!! ;-D. I have made this project in a bit different way: I have used the cord like You but unfortunately my machine doesn't work so strong so I hand maded it and the other thing different is that I have used the LYcra fabric to cover the cord so the final work is immediately well finished (if you want a bit less rustic) but it's wonderful.....I have also made a carpet for the bathroom with the same tecnique and you know what? my friends want I make these things for them too! Hugs
That was nice to watch when I first started watching it I thought I would never do this.. but I might now it looks kinda easy and so neat. Thanks you did a good job at explaining it.
I'd actually though the yellow and pink would be lovely as a little hat, so when I do the tutorial I think that's what I'll do with mine lol. Thanks for making this
I love this!! I can't wait to try making one. Your instructions look great. I will post a photo once I've made on. Thanks Vanessa, love your tutorials!
I have seen thread that changes color and this would actually be a good project for that. I've wondered before why anyone would ever want a thread that changes color. But hey, it would be kinda fun for this.
@enigmaticveil THANKS! With that strong glue the fabric will hold nicely to the cord but I'm not sure how well the coiling part will work with the glue. The different levels may not hold up enough to give the basket the structure it needs. This project definitely CANNOT be handsewn. It's tough enough for some machines to sew it.. it would be practically impossible to do it by hand. It's just too thick. Hope this helps! Happy sewing!
I actually prefer to have the fraying because of the overall textured look it gives the basket. If you don't want it fray you can use better quality cotton fabric that has a tighter weave... or try spray starching the strips before you start making the bowl. Try to handle it less too.. the more you pull and rub the fabric the more fraying. Good luck!
The thinner one that is 100% cotton is easier. Make sure you have a heavy duty needle like a size 90/14 or 100/16.. or even a denim needle in there. :o)
I have the materials to do this because I tried it by hand. Not fun! I am going to give it a go on my machine but I plan on making a rug to use at my front door. I just found your videos and they are great! Keep up the great work you are doing! I wish you the best in the new year!

I've seen them made really big and used as center pieces on dinner tables. Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial.
Really brilliant video. My son went to a craft fair and came back with yards of cording but no instructions. He told me about the great bowls he had seen so I went on youtube and found your great video - many thanks as i am now set to give it a go

What a great tutorial you make it look so easy thank you. Don't know if my machine is up for it or not but intend to find out.

Also, love, love, love, the quilt in the background.

You have a tuff machine there. This is a great project, looking forward to trying it : )
wonderfull teacher!!! I will be making these for Christmas...thanks so much
That was nice to watch when I first started watching it I thought I would never do this.. but I might now it looks kinda easy and so neat. Thanks you did a good job at explaining it.
Love it thank, you! Ooo, will try it with some old white T shirts I have cut into strips as a core.
Yes you do! The only difference is in the first couple of rounds you do when shaping the bottom. Have fun!
I absolutely love these!!And you do such a great job explaining every detail..Thank you so much,I cant wait to get started!!!
Love it! I always wondered how these baskets were made.
Thank you! Have fun with it.
The ugly side of the fabric! I like it. I'm gonna start using that haha. I really like this project!
How interesting! I've got a new craft project to try! Thank you sooo much Crafty Gemini!
I have seen thread that changes color and this would actually be a good project for that. I've wondered before why anyone would ever want a thread that changes color. But hey, it would be kinda fun for this.
Thank you for replying TCG. I will try this. You make it look so easy. Have a great 4th
You are good and your baskets are beautiful.
@RosebudliasCabochons No problem! Glad you liked it. :o)
what an excellent explaination. I can't wait to try this.
Wonderful instructor!

Thank you so much for making this video I love it!! I also love your channel
I've never used anything else as a substitute. I only recommend the 100% cotton cording.
The thinner one that is 100% cotton is easier. Make sure you have a heavy duty needle like a size 90/14 or 100/16.. or even a denim needle in there. :o)
Thanks glad to help!
I have the materials to do this because I tried it by hand. Not fun! I am going to give it a go on my machine but I plan on making a rug to use at my front door. I just found your videos and they are great! Keep up the great work you are doing! I wish you the best in the new year!
I love this and you make it look so easy.
Awesome tutorial, I can't wait to make a couple of these. Thanks for giving us another great tutorial.
Janet
great tutorial, please keep on making such good tutorials
