Tomba! and Tomba! 2 are one of the best games I've ever played in PS1 along with Spyro and Crash. My brother and I had a great and fun time playing it. I miss those days when he and I were so struggling solving the events.
Hi, I'm a developer for DoubleShake which was very inspired by Tomba/Tombi along with a few other 2.5D platformers. This video will actually help me and my team greatly look back, and I thank you for your effort into making this.
I just gave the steam page a look and it looks very promising! It's quite literally a mix and mash of Tomba, Mischief Makers, and Klonoa! I hope you'll be able to add some NPCs to it.

In like 2005, there was a train derailment of goods; my dad heard about it, and after the cleanup, he went to check out the damage. He found a soaked cardboard box with a bunch of videos, some seals broken, but Tomba 2 was sitting on top. Even though the plastic was torn and the case was wet, that game played flawlessly, and I played it religiously. Tomba 2 was one of those games that changed my gaming life
Tomba 2! Its just the one of the best games that i played in life, so fun, scenarios so different that everything i had saw, the perfect soundtrack, its really sad that we wont never have a Tomba 3...
this game is such a hidden gem i still cant believe people dont know about it yet. i remember how much i struggle to buy it back when it was released in france so few copies were available, soooo difficult to get one there were like one copy per shop and supermarket for about a month then unfindable
Id actually love to know how much tomba 1 and 2 sold with the psone classics release on psn. Tomba's lack of commercial success is really hard to pin point a reason on, but I honestly think it was timing and it not being a game you could find everywhere. Most people knew of the game from the demo disc it was featured on a lot of them but no one really saw it in stores. Compared to the biggef I.Ps like Crash and Spyro
Yeah I remember I got to know it from a demo disk. I remember that at the time, being Italian and like 6 years old, I was scared to try it at first because of the name
@Sean W Yeah where I like most people had PS1 not N64 all the kids at school and kids that were neighbors played the demo and wanted the game but only 1 person I know actually got the full game with everyone else unable to find it. There was a similar thing with Klonoa as well where it was hard to find in stores
Love the first game but not so much the second one! Recently purchased the Special Edition version of the first game for PS5 but it’s a cash grab! A basic port unfortunately! If I could afford it, I would commission a FULL GROUND UP version of the first came that fully supports the original idea for The Village of Civilisation! That would be an EPIC game IMO
I dont believe the name OR the character design hurt Tomba. The whole reason i rented it as a kid was because i found the cover interesting! His pink hair and green shorts is iconic. I think it was released at the wrong time and without enough ads. :(

Tomba is probably my absolute number 1 favorite PSX game of all time. I still replay it and the sequel every once in awhile. The only PSX games that could compete in my mind are Lunar Silver Star Story and FFVII.

Amazing work there, we really hope even if there is 1% chance it would be remade, or if they ever consider a sequel, but thats aside you have done amazing work man keep it up!
The second one was shockingly different, the story was immediately DUMPED onto you, the music was much less impressive (not bad, per se but... not Harumi Fujita good), extremely poor English Dub, a sidekick that needed to get lost, and the worst bit - Tomba! ran at 60 FPS, perfect for an action game. That's 16ms of input lag paired with an almost rock solid 60 FPS. Tomba 2! Was stuck at at HALF of the refresh rate due to all the extra geometry and textures needed to refresh, leaving 33ms input lag with an unsteady 30 FPS. If you went from T! to T2! and felt like the game was a bit more sluggish to control - you were correct.
I loved everything this game, both games. And I can go back and play it and still enjoy it. Can't believe there's a whole video about its failure. I don't think anyone who's played it didn't enjoy it. This game is one of the games that solidify my decision as the ps1 being my favorite gaming experience of all time.

Tomba 1 is great and I'm currently trying to finally finish it. Tomba 2 is legendary for me. It is soon good, and it brought me so much happiness as a child. I even re purchased it on PSN and played through it as an adult and it is still so good. I wish these games got the Spyro crash remake treatment, that would be a dream come true. Tomba is my favorite platformer.
It was commercially unsuccessful because they only made like 100 copies outside Japan or something. Everyone who played the games seems to love them, but I swear you'd only find like 1 or 2 copies if you were lucky in a video game shop. I guess they felt they didn't have enough money for marketing? Sure I get it's the annoying business part of the industry but it's kinda important. Companies like Rockstar don't just throw money around to get ads plastered all over the world for no reason.
Haven't played these games, but interesting video nonetheless! Very clean editing, pleasant background music, and well researched, I'd definitely watch more of these types of videos from you!
The changing of names is extremely common across all medias for similar reasons, for example, star wars R2P2 is renamed as R2D2 in hispanic countries because P2 sounds like the word "fart" in spanish, and that is only a "funny" example but is super super common in general especially as the game had most languages as optional in the same version, i remember it had spanish, english, german, french,italian and portuguese, maybe dutch too. I cant remember if the included "book" was in all of those languages too, but i am pretty sure that the copy of the actual cd was the same for all europe so they wouldnt want to have a misleading sounding name as a title, probably so they could sell more games
The Tomba legacy in general is something video game developers should look back into. The character and theme the concepts were unique and the gameplay was also very fun. Tomba 2 definitely made a stamp in the video game industry. So I’m hopeful it gets revamped with the same fun dark elements and abilities it had.
I never saw the game in any supermarket or electronic shop in my country, Denmark when I was a kid. I knew noone back then who had the game. It never really got popular here and there was no PR whatsoever in tv ads for the game or anywhere else.

@@Hepodix again this is just my fuzzy memory but to me croc looked different and the game felt super boring to me. i loved the first one, catching the gobbos but 2 felt rushed and just not fun to play.

the way the tombi map works is so cutting edge that it can be compared to dark souls. games like crash/mario had the minimap to choose levels.

The likelihood that Tomba 3 will be made has gone up a lot actually, because the first tomba game is being remastered as we speak
And now, in 2023 they announced that Tomba/Tombi will be remastered and will be release in 2024 with new OST. Yep, the dream isn't dead.

This game was sold on low volumes on retail, making it hard to obtain. Wish they had a bigger budget back then!

Some people would think that the design or name hurts it (I personally disagree), but I agree that the marketing budget was weak hence the low sales.

As it happens, Tombi was rereleased as a special edition on PS5 and such, which alleviates how expensive it is to get on eBay and Amazon, etc.
It's just sad because back then the PS1 and PS2 era, there were a lot of pirated game.. which I suppose made the biggest impact on Tomba

I will always cherish my experience with Tombi when I got it for my 7th birthday. Only in my early 20s did I know there was a sequel!
