My family and I summered in Five Islands, Maine when I and my twin sister were very young. The house we stayed at was right near the town where Tibbedeaux's Lobster Pound was located and provided us with plenty of live lobsters, crabs, and Ipswich clams. When I was older, Mom and I went to Five Islands. While there, I cleaned, under running water, 100 long-necked steamer clams. Mom steamed them, put out the bowls of clam broth and melted butter seasoned with lemon juice, and watched while I ate every one. The best meal I ever had. This was a great video, Mike, showing us what Ipswich (a town in Massachusetts) clams look like, how to clean and cook them, and how to eat them. Since moving to Tucson 52 years ago, I have only had these beauties once since they are expensive. Live Maine lobsters are easier to afford and just as delicious.
I'm from RI, looks great, I'd eat a lot lol. Family split between steamed and fried with bellies, make everyone happy, never even thought use in chowder 🤷, I'll look👊, Usually get a lot free🎃, and cohaugs for stuffies and chowder, cherrystone Or littlenecks for clamcakes.. but first night purge for day and steam, have with melted butter, next day fried clams with bellies 🤤, other clams shuck and freeze unless a weekend, always get more.. I'd hate to pay these days lol.
I grew up in the northern part of USA. Now in Florida. Down south, many people have no idea what these clams are and how good they are!! Headed to New England in July....give you one guess what I am having for dinner ??
I’m a New Englander relocated to N East FL,n yes they have no clue :) But wen in Rome.................... I’ve found that Lenas from Salisbury(Ma) n Essex seafood have their sister restaraunts in Ocala FL👍🏽 WELL WORTH THE RIDE!
When I has a kid we went to Maine every summer for at least 3 weeks ! Love steamers, Chowdah and fried whole bellies ! Please do a video on the whole bellies ! Btw new subscriber today !
My goal is to do a vid on whole bellies. However, they are very hard to get down here in Central PA. My favorite Seafood is Fried Whole Belly Clams. It's the very first thing I get when I arrive in New England.
@@mikethestewburner5505 Thanks for the response ! I hear u, that is the first thing on the menu when I go to NE as well ! I also live in Pennsylvania. I am in NEPA. I know what u mean about finding Steamers in PA. Price Chopper near me, said they can get me them in the shell, like u had them in the video. U have to shuck them, but cheaper than buying the shucked and having them shipped.
Yeah I was raised and brought up in Georgetown Massachusetts 45 minutes from Boston Mass yes that's yes that's how far is the bomb especially the lobster soft shell steamers and sweet corn
We can sometimes get steamers at one farmers market here in the Atlanta area. Haven't had them in years. And we never ate the siphon/neck/yeah it's that part too. You may have just cost me a small fortune for tonight's dinner.
Nothing like a pot of steamers. If you throw a linguisa over the clams while steaming - even better. But technically, that thing is not a neck. There's no heads on one end and body at the other. It's a siphon. But I'll allow that neck is better than wee-wee...

What's the dibetween those Steamers and Little Neck Clams that you mentioned?
The little necks have little to no neck nor do they have a large belly

I have never heard of “soft shell clams” before. Is the shell soft like soft shell crabs? Is it the same concept?
They are not soft shell like soft shell crabs. Basically the shell is thinner than other clams like quahog or cherry stone.
@@mikethestewburner5505 thanks for the clarification.
No.
Russell had to watch it again. Now he’s talking about making clam chowder this Sunday.
Stay tuned Sunday for the Chowdah episode
I'm gonna brag here...my chowdah is the best. My momma taught me right.
Whats the device you used to heat up the pot of clams? Its portable! New sub here
Thanks for the view. That is a induction burner/cooktop.

Too small I like the big clams. The small clams are good for making clam chowder.the big clams are good for eating.
Ah, but you must watch part 2 where I use the leftover smaller clams for Chowder. There were plenty of larger clams that we ate out of that batch.
