Good story. Thank you. As my husband says "we don’t train to fight, we train to defend." If defending means fighting so be it.
Bye the way I t’s not a 'guy don' it’s a 'gee don.' It’s a regiments colours and has two points on the side opposite to the one on the pole. It usually has the battle honours embroidered on it. And is of great significance to the regiment. It would be defended to death. When a new guidon is presented to a regiment the old one is laid up with honour or as does happen position in a military chapel.
