Your header strength runs from top to bottom of the boards. That being said you should be fine with the way you ran them. There won't be a lot of weight on them. Greg, glad to see your arm healing. Also, loved the goats on their walk. Like trying to heard a bunch of 1st graders.😆
First off, I Love your channel & watch all the time. A bit of advice from a retired carpenter with over 30 yrs experience. Your headers need to be standing up. They're not strong enough laying down. Sandwich with your exterior plywood to come up with the 5-1/2" your looking for. 1-2x6 then the 1/2" another 2x6 then 1/2" and finally another 2x6 = 5-1/2". ✌️
Even in USA we are having lots of problems with dimensional lumber width and thickness variances...even between same supplier but different length of boards. Really tough without planing them. Id use 1/4 plywood material on inside behind the drywall
Ever lay headers flat if you worried about a 1/4” fur them out with material otherwise don’t worry about it. Boards laying flat have no strength that’s why you turn them crown side up on there side.
You are correct that you should never put the headers in that way. Can you imagine not fixing it now how much trouble it is going to be to fix it later when they start to sag and the windows want open. Having to redo the sheet rock, siding, tape, bedding and paint. So much easier to fix it now.
Hahahaha you all make me laugh it’s a lean to not the bottom story of a 3 story building by the time sheet material is fixed to it both sides it’s not going anywhere. Flipping hell live a little it’s their house not yours let them build it how they want.
This is awesome, we had a lamb on our farm, Mary will always want to walk with us on the dams and in the fields. You will have lifetime of memories with those wonderful animals.
🇨🇦35 yr Carpenter here, read @thegoochman2 's comment about headers, he's 100% correct. Also, is there any reason your not sheathing the walls while they're laying down? Saves a lot of time, muscle and ladder work later. edit, also don't forget that the snow sliding from the roof above can create a "shock" load on the lower roof when it lands on top of the already existing snow on the lower roof. Cheers from a stones throw away! 🇨🇦🪚🔨
There were a few things like that I saw, but that's ok. It's not an instructional video, they're just documenting their projects. So many people would be afraid to tackle the projects they do, so kudos to them!
You guys are great! Please switch the headers...you will have problems with sagging and then windows and doors won't open or close...it doesn't matter how many boards you stack laying flat...they will sag and bow. I know from experience 😊
Amazing!!!!!!two kids couldn’t hardly frame the first wall in the main house lol . The headers over the windows would probably never matter but you showed the hole world lol.
Hello Katie and Greg. For the one-armed bandit, have you seen the sharpeners than are made for carpenters' pencils? They may have them where you buy lumber, when you have to. I hope you got the top on before the rain came. Have good days!
Loved Steven on the goat Hike he is so adorable he's the star of all the Goat's he's A Beautiful little Boy. Y'all did a Great job on the addition Y'all will have the addition done In no time can't hardley wait until the next video. I wish ypu had 3 video's a week !I'm sure I'm not the only one wishing there was 3 a week Glad see Gregg is improving rapidly Bless both of youv!
Awesome addition and Katie showing me with 3 2/6s at a time 😂 Stephen is so cute running jumping sideways and stuck yelling ma help great stuff you guys, can’t wait for the next episode.. 👍👍❤
You guys rock, love your videos. Been watching for a long time now. I'm going to Cape Breton in the spring to build, have property there, but 60 and single. Gonna give it a good go. Cheers keep the vids coming.
I love framing looking great , Gregory how are you heading, usually it takes three weeks, I think you aren't going to let it slow you down. That's what I do to heal keep moving on. Thanks for sharing your framing looks so nice. You and Katie move insulation so fast helps that you used screws.
I could watch your goats all day. I don't have your patience or animal understanding that you have. Thank you so much for the goats that little one just bounces up and down with excitement. I love it !!! Thanks again....
I would LOVE to hear more on your solar. I have a 12x20 shed with, table saw, miter saw, add some other stuff like a mini-split. What you recommend to start with, but expandable for JUST the shed, not house. Cry once...buy once?
No worries on headers. Not carrying a huge load. Dont let people on here discourage the framing….you guys are great …keep working safe .Been with you for yrs. Side note. Katie have you been working out? I see you may have dropped a pound or two. You both look great , you look happy!! Happy for you both
Good morning guys :) We just went and picked up a load of treated 2x6's for our deck stair treds. 17 years ago when we built our stair case we used decking boards for stair treds and being only one inch thick they didnt hold up at all. Lesson learned always use a 2 inch product verses the lame one inch thick material for stair treds. Have a great day. Project is coming together nicely :)
Hi Katie and Greg. You two work so very well together, I'd put you guys up against any small construction crew in your area!! Katie, you have grown and developed such a strong skill set, it has been an actual joy for me to follow your development. There is little you cannot accomplish and your confidence has grown as well. Greg, great to see your healing is progressing well. I absolutely loved the last part of the video where your took the goats and dogs out for the hike. Steve is so fun to watch as he explores and then gets excited and hops, jumps and skips - he had me laugh out loud a few times! I really like his vocals getting louder as he lacked the confidence in the stream area by the rocks and culverts where you went to rescue him Katie. He is sure a character. Aspen and Juniper sure have fun when you guys go out on your hike and walks. You have some beautiful scenery to enjoy as you are out there. Have a blessed week, be safe and I'll see you on the next one. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.
While I was thinking about it, you should consider putting a humidifier in your battery and power supply building to protect all your electronics. Great job of framing.
@ 8:30 many people sandwich plywood in the headers to get the dimensions to come out correct ( what ever thickness of plywood necessary to come out right ) / and I wonder with those headers so high in the wall really how much weight they really have to support
I love watching you guys you’re really on fire with your homestead. Looks great and I love the “goat walks” especially. Keep safe and I’m glad to see the fast healing in progress. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Have you throught about a large over hang on the door for the winter snow and rain. It will be nice also when you try to unlock the door in the rain? Monkeyvroom
The goat hikes are my absolute favorite ❤ . I would love to tag along for the chicken butchering to. Yall are doing such a great job . I see your struggles but your fruits from your labors truly shows.
Well done you achieved a lot in a day. Nice to see Greg’s arm is now down to just the dressing. Steve is getting big and I love the way he jumps and flips x
There is a strength axis in the lumber, much stronger in the other orientation, I personally think you will be OK with that because of the width of the rough openings and the roof it supports 😀
Fun show always guy's, I guess it's my favorite! Your intro with the roof of the house bouncing shut is fun, all the animation in your intro is fun. I used to think how lucky Greg was. I finally gave in to Greg being a dude and I guess Katie is lucky too!
Steven for the Win. He's so cute, just want to hug him. The room addition is looking great and a lot was accomplished so quickly. Hugs from Santa Barbara 🤗😘👋🐐😎🌹🍷🙏
It’s looking good Glad Greg is getting over the accident you to work so well together. I am sure you know there is always work to be done. I really enjoy your videos.
Very glad to see Greg healing well nuff to do the addition with you. Now that's a good looking framing job. You did it sooooo fast!!! Or just edited it to seem that way. Steeb is such a character specially when he runs, jumps in the air, and side kicks really makes me laugh. It's so wonderful how all the goats go walking with you reminds me of a bunch of school kids out on a field trip. You guys are going to have all kinds of storage room once that addition is finished. Is that a ""Glorified mud room""? ..... Thanks for your replies makes me feel like a real person!!! Your cyber friend, Me southern AZ. (USA)
If you are checking the wood mark it so you are not double and triple checking ! Same for wall studs make one jig for the mitre saw and they will cut all exactly the same . Sometimes it is hard to get it up . But try try try !
WOW that addition went up fast with you two working on it looks fantastic real nice job Folks . Love your goat walks Steve is such a cute wee sole, Love when he was crying for you lol.
Wow yall did well on the walls. Love the goats, especially Stephen, what a funny, vocal goat yall have. So cute. Glad they listen to both of you. Enjoyed the video!😊
the framework looks great and it went up so Quick . brilliant teamwork as always
Love your story. If it's not too late, you should flip those headers and add a few more short studs above and below your windows and above the door.
Your header strength runs from top to bottom of the boards. That being said you should be fine with the way you ran them. There won't be a lot of weight on them. Greg, glad to see your arm healing. Also, loved the goats on their walk. Like trying to heard a bunch of 1st graders.😆

You’re doing very well on your build. It’s going to be awesome.
Great job guys looking amazing and enjoying the goat walks keep on keeping on
Hello my friend I really like the way you two designed and finished the house it's amazing
Even in USA we are having lots of problems with dimensional lumber width and thickness variances...even between same supplier but different length of boards. Really tough without planing them. Id use 1/4 plywood material on inside behind the drywall
My goodness ❗️quite a hike/walk with the goats and dogs❗️Entertaining😁‼️

That hurt to see. I'd rather them put 1 up and 1 down. It'll probably be fine if they nailed them enough, but still feels wrong.
@@BenReese yes they do good work but no need to worry about if they sit flush front and back they are for support

Kinda reminds me of that dry pour slab for the power shed. It will only manifest itself after gravity takes hold.

Thanks for bringing us on a walk
Steve is a cutie! The goats love you! That new addition is really going to add much needed space to your house.
Enjoy your videos very much, my husband and I built our three bedroom home on ten acres in 1971, home still standing.
Header stonger up right, lay it down it will bow.

Did you watch the video as they said why they didn’t sheath the framing before putting it up if you’d watched and listened you’d know.
Double window sill plates too.
Love watching Steve run and do that sideways jump. He is so cute. Each of your babies have their own personality, so fun to watch them. God bless.

Congrats on the framing!! 🎉🎉🎉
Good to see Greg healing so well.
I love it when you take your goats for a hike, especially with little Steve hopping around.
It is fun to see you all interact with the goats. They are as good as dogs.
Boards for headers laying flat have no strength. Need to put half inch plywood for strength.
Wow guys u guys are awesome but that's another big improvement and more room for additional needed furnitures.good job.
the addition looks great can't wait to see it finished

Way over bullt for sure.
High or low placement of the headers has no effect on the weight placed on the top plate.
Those are not headers, they are just a stack of 2 by 6's.
Good video ! It will never fall down ! Be happy. Great goat and dog walk. Thanks for sharing.
