Then you didn't do this. They sprayed then told the homeowners they HAD to pay because it was required by the city, who they were working for. (obviously they weren't)
PerOculos tax audit what??? You didn’t request the service you don’t pay what does it have to do with a audit???? The city needs to be audited they take tax money from your taxes paid on the property. It’s already paid and the city is not doing it. That’s why this scam is a easy one.

When I was little, someone tried to scam my mom like this. She flatly refused to pay, even though they already painted the number on the curb. They actually painted it out with a neatly painted black rectangle! The black rectangle stayed there proudly for years!
@@soundsoflife9549 It's the house number. It actually isn't the world's worst idea, put them all in the same obvious spot, but only if someone has requested they do that.
About every two years, we get a couple of guys doing it the right way. they use good paint and good stencils, and they ask before hand and give a price. I always say yes and I'm happy they do it.
It's not usually a scam, many HOA's do this exact thing. This is the first time I've heard of this being a scam and not an officially sanctioned service. And yes that means that they paint it on and you pay for it whether you wanted it or not because the number is required by the association, though proper HOA's use the association fee you pay every month to lessen the blow, but most don't either because the fee is low in low income neighborhoods, or because in the higher end neighborhoods they can afford it. At the end of the day having both a curb painted number AND visible house number near the front door of your home are extremely important things to have.
@@greatfullded I would leave it up there. That would be AWESOME if they did do that. That is the kind of asshole I am. I would not even press vandalism charges against the kids.

In our area, they leave a flyer saying they will paint it...you must reply so they WON'T paint it...crock of crap. What if you were out of town. We told the guy it should be the other way around, ask first, get permission, then paint.
Here's how this would play out if they asked me for money: > Tell them to leave > Once they refuse pull out my phone, while talking to them threatening to call the police > Go to camera and take picture of them > Tell them I'm calling the police on them for vandalism and trespassing > Call the police on them
Well Meliodas, it comes down to personal guilt. Many people do not know how the city works. If the criminal chooses their words correctly, they can instill fear of legal trouble into their victims, and guilt for not paying. I am absolutely amazed that this scam works however. Of all of the ridiculous scams out there, this one is the easiest to fact check. But guilt and fear can prevent many from investigating prior to paying.
A couple years ago, a guy left notices in our mailbox saying that he would be painting our numbers on the curb and payment was voluntary. The job he did in front of my house was perfect. He left a note in my mailbox indicating that if I like the job he did, I could voluntarily send him a check for $20. I thought that was the perfect way to set-up his business. I gladly sent him a check and didn't feel like I was scammed at all. It's funny, my neighbors were complaining, yet they got a perfect curb paint-job for free.
I don’t agree with that. I mean if it was fine for you then that’s between both you and him but personally, I wouldn’t want someone randomly coming along taking it upon himself to alter or destroy people’s property without their permission so I agree with your neighbors. Jmo.
"Destroy?" LOL. The curbs in certain neighborhoods come already painted and the paint fades over time. So when someone comes along and restores what was already there before, they are not destroying, they're actually undoing the "destruction" wraught by the elements. You're the kind of person who would complain if the barista gave you a free croissant with your latte, aren't you?
Lydia Salem - You’re calling the cop retarded when you don’t even know what water color paint is? It can look like normal acrylic paint but rinses off with water.
Alano Carter : I did. You can buy those bottles here for example : www.discountschoolsupply.com/Mobile/ProductDetail.aspx?product=117&Category=104 You're welcome.
What about the streets that have parking on one side of the street? Who's going to see the numbers? It's usually next to the door or on their mail box, pretty simple.
No numbers on house or mail box is a HUGE problem for emergency responders. You'd be surprised at how many houses in a row have no markings, and you end up guessing.
Right? Same thing happened to me! 2 years!!! My little girl had spent the night at a friend's house and had not come home! It took 2 years before I could locate the house. Luckily I found the house because someone had finally painted the curb outside of it and I was able to get my child back. Unfortunately, she had lost some weight since they didn't feed her the same as they fed their own children. We were all just so relieved that we found the house and were able to retrieve our child. And I was glad they at least let her stay there while I searched for her. Still, that was 2 years lost but we are all back together and happy again. Next time she stays at a friend's house we will demand the address be visible where she's going to stay! Or I'll be a monkey's uncle before I let her stay there!!
What idiot would pay? It's on the curb so it's the property of City council and any cost would be covered by rates or state taxes. Uniformly painted numbers on the curb is a good idea though.
Simple scam. If they tell the person they work with the city and placed flyers in everyone's mailboxes 2-3 months ago informing them of the program and it would cost $10.00 per house. They can either pay it now or have it assessed on their property taxes. Most people will not give it a 2nd thought and just pay the small amount. Also remember even though it is the curb any improvements to the road or right of way will be assessed to your property during the next assessment period.
Again I say, what idiot would pay? The curb is the councils responsibility so is paid for by them, and a note in the letterbox is not in any way an obligation to pay for unrequested service. property taxes are uniform ssed on area of land and street, so you r tax would still go up if the council improves your street even if yo do pay the $10.
Lillith Eve because that's hyperbolic to call it fascism. Sometimes in order to keep harmony the government will have certain expectations of its citizens. The man wasn't "forced" to fix it. There was no military set of police who would've come to his door and beat him had he not complied. He would've been fined. Such action by the government (making sure their property stays in line) is a service to others in the neighborhood, assuring that their houses maintain property value and are not dragged down by their neighbor. I feel like when people indiscriminately call such actions "fascism," they seek to put it on the same level as dictatorial states where government control and suppress was at such a level that people would be killed for simply criticizing the government. You have the right to say what you want about the government. That in and of its self is not fascism, tho I suppose it is entirely your right to say it is. This is just my attempt on contectualizing and showing the comparison you are, perhaps inadvertently, making when you call such minor things "fascism"
And the state will pay you with prison time. It's not illegal nor immoral to simply demand anything from anyone. It may be rude, but that's another matter entirely.
Thats nice though here in canada pennies are worthless. However load up 100 or more of them in a plastic baggie and watch the fuckers run if they can after getting blunderbussed by a waterballoon slingshot full of pennies lol

Here's the thing: If they were working for the city, they were going to be paid by the city, not any individual homeowner...so they wouldn't come up to your door and ask you for money. Otherwise, they're just random people doing a service you never asked for, and never made any agreement to pay for. Act accordingly.
YES! This has happened to my mom and she flat out said "No. I didn't ask for this. I'm not paying for this." People if you know it's not right say no. That applies to everything.

I lived in Huston 10 years ago and i worked doing this we used to put flyer first and the next day we came back to see if anybody filled the flyer for numbers on the curb, it was rare to see a house without this numbers
That happened to me once. The guy insisted that I pay him. I told him to have the City pay him since the curb and street belong to them. I stood my ground and didn't care if he was mad.
Ion Ymous holy shit another one. There are actually a lot of people like this, and the stupidity is fucking amazing. I'm in total disbelief that these people are real. It would be interesting to know the thought process of someone who thinks in such a ridiculously abstract way.

Cumputer Techniques I got a company permit to do this, the city actually recommended me to do it, I hire people to do it for me and I make a lot of money
When I was younger I wasn't a scam. A guy knocked on our door years ago and asked if he could repaint our curb address for $2.50. It looked great and we helped someone that needed money and was willing to work for it. But to turn it into a scam, that's shitty......
I used to have this kind of business. I would walk a neighborhood and knock on doors and ask if they wanted their addresses on the curb. I told them the charge was $10, and I would leave a a self-addressed envelope on the door when I finished. They would then mail me the $10, usually in cash. I made about $100, soliciting in the mornings and painting in the afternoon. I was never hassled by members of the community, the police, or neighborhood bullies. The business got my family and me through a difficult time in a time of recession. In that whole time, only two families didn't pay. I did nothing about the ones who didn't pay.
This has been going on since the invention of the curb. What they painted didn't look like it would last for long. Some cheap spray paint and stencils. Worth about $2.
When I was teen a group of people put these flyers out for curb painting. The flyers said if you did not want your curb painted you need to leave the flyer out. Well they came knocking and pops told them to leave. They threaten to call the cops. Bad move. Cops came and told to leave the city.
Yeah, we still get those once in a while in my city. They actually want us to attempt to tape a piece of paper to a cement curb and assume it won't blow off.
Someone was offering to do this in my neighborhood and he said it was completely optional to pay him or not. He only asked $20 and I saw his work and it looked pretty good. Having those numbers on the curb really helped the mailman and UPS delivery workers locate my house with ease.
I really don't understand what this scam is about. Some dudes in official enough looking construction/painting gear walk up to your house and say "hey we're from the city and we just painted your street so we'll need you to pay for that now." "You're from the city right?" "Yeah." "Well they will pay you and if they don't maybe you should quit."
Its not your property so you can't press charges and the city does not prosecute painted addresses on the curb whether the homeowner did or a door to door solicitor.
If caught by police they can be charged, for Graffiti under the malicious mischief laws (also know as Vandalism of city property). Malicious mischief in the third degree - Makes acts of graffiti malicious mischief in the third degree. Also Fraud for impersonating a city employee or official. Fraud that results in profit etc. Just because they are not teenagers with backwards hats and gang tattoos doesn't mean it isn't graffiti. They statute makes no argument in that effect.
They do the same thing in my neighborhood from time to time, but they ask first. I always say yes cause at least these people are asking you before they do it.
For one, Those look like crap. Secondly. ask if they want it and then discuss a charge. But as far as permits goes why should we need permission to earn a living?
The guy above me makes a good point about the curb. Also, it's important that permits are issued to door-to-door operations. All kinds of issues can arise from these kinds of 'sales', their information, and a quick summary of law goes a long way.
but you wouldn't , because your fat and lazy or you would have already done it? , so its probably a good service ^^ but yah I feel yah, don't go door to door or even bother my phone, open a free web page ill come to you, lol
APCWORLDSUXAZ & alex metz Where on Earth are you guys getting Dassd Schsdu's work ethic, physical appearance and house description from...? Why are you both making assumptions that have pretty much nothing to do with what he was talking about anyway? I don't understand why you think it would be difficult for Dassd to spray the sidewalk in front of his house. It doesn't make sense why you both are attacking him personally and making him seem incompetent. You both need to grow up. Anyway, I agree with Dassd. If I needed something done (any home project) I'd do it myself and if the project requirements went past my skill level, then I'd hire someone myself. I don't want some random person doing something *I* didn't ask for, in front of my house on property (the sidewalk) that is owned by the city and then demand that I pay them. It wasn't even a good paint job anyway, the letters looked ugly and I'd prefer to do it better myself, if I even wanted the numbers (fixed) there in the first place. This whole thing feels like a scam honestly.
"Why should we need permission to earn a living". You really couldn't comprehend that the curb just might in fact be owned by the city....I wonder how many other things you complain about when the obvious answer is right in front of you.
You all have it wrong. The scammer painting the numbers without anyone's permission is not illegal. It is the request for payment after a service was preformed without authorization that us the "scam". Anyone can legally walk up to a house and offer the painting service for a fee or tips. If the occupant agrees, you have a deal and now can paint the numbers and collect your payment. If they don't agree, you can not legally require them to pay for a service they didn't want.
I had a flyer on my front door the other day asking me if I want to get it painted, it had different designs ranging from $10 to $15. I picked one and paid the fee and the next day they did the job. This was done by our HOA.
Ha! This happened in my neighborhood and Bluff Park Alabama about 6 years or so ago. There was an index style flier card in our mailbox, that said the City was requiring us to have our house numbers painted on the curb... and that on "such and such date" they would be by to collect payment and paint curb. All of our neighbors seemed to get the cards too, but none of us had heard anything about it elsewhere or through our HOA. So I just threw the card away! About a week later two guys came to the door... they said they were there to paint the curb and that they needed payment. I told them we did not want this and thanks anyway.... He said it was city required so we would have too. I told him... well then the city can pay u for it then cause I'm not going too! I closed my door and have never heard anything else about it again!!
There was a a group that went through a neighborhood where I used to live, doing a civic-service project. They put cards on every front door, announcing that they planned to come paint the numbers on the curb. Anyone who didn't want them just had to mark the "No, thanks!" box. Donations were requested, but completely voluntary. They did a good job, and most neighbors gave donations, supporting a local charity.
dallon weekes makes me dallon weak I think in some neighborhoods the homeowners association will fine you for painting yours when everyone else’s is bare concrete they want uniformity. This might vary from place to place but if you have homeowners association you ask them first before doing something like that just to feel like a big person.
Elizandro Muñiz here they had a truck. uniform and company logo. also offered customized logos like Marine logo to show thats a army family. They asked for $15 if we want it. Only painted it if we asked for it.
Large Marche - A hustle is a scam by definition because it means you're hustling people. This particular hustle involved performing a service that no one requested, and then attempting to coerce and intimidate the homeowners into paying for the shotty work. Obviously enough people fall for this scam that it keeps them going. There is nothing honorable about it though.
Yeah, we had a guy come by and told us the truth. He just got out of prison, and was trying to make some money to pay for rent while he was looking for a job. He charged us $10 for just numbers, $15 for a symbol added, and $20 if we wanted it on both sides with or without symbol. A month later he came by again and thanked us. Said we helped him continue to provide for his family, and he landed a decent job. The $20 we gave him was a step towards changing his life. Some people just need help, others, like the one that is demanding need an ass whooping. Lol
Vega - Yeah, I can respect the ones who honestly solicit the work, and actually obtain permission first. I'm glad things worked out for that guy. Being an ex-con can make it near impossible to find decent employment.
Yes, this happened in my neighborhood years ago. I argued with the guy for a solid five minutes over why I will not pay, then I finally said, "hold on, let me go get some cash". Came back with my hunting rifle and ordered him to leave my property. Boy did he run away like a little bitch. Best part is, it was the cheapest paint ever. One rainy day washed it all away. Almost like chalk.
What The Hawk? "Robbing people of doing their actual job".. that's hilarious. So the government forcing people to pay for something without choice isn't theft, but offering a product and coming to mutually beneficial agreement to pay for a service is? And it could be considered vandalism if it was unwanted and an eyesore.. i doubt anybody would claim that for a service they request though unless it's hideous.
Like those guys that rush up to your car at a stoplight and half heartedly wash your window, then ask for money after they've done it, and don't stop when you tell them not to.
There was a time...25 or 30 years ago when I hit hard times. I had a family to support and no job. So, I went to the hardware store and bought some black and white paint and some number stencils and went door to door....asking to paint numbers on the curb. Five dollars. Most people seen that I was trying to work for my income instead of depending on welfare and it got me through the hard times for a while. There will always be scammers but sometimes it's just a guy trying to make a buck to put some food on the table.
You did it the right way, asked owners permission. In the story it's not much of a scam when the payment is open ended. If the job is good, $5-$15 should be good. It's better to ask first. Watch out for the fertilizer men (CA, USA), the trick is the fertilizer bag hardly has any fertilizer, so it take lot of bags $$$.
There was a group going through out town doing this a few years ago except they were claiming to be fund raising and were asking for $30 donations. It actually can be helpful if done right, as the white paint illuminates under light making it easier for emergency vehicles to see your address. Some neighborhoods don't have mailboxes located at the street.
I love the clarification at the end of the bit that this is only illegal because the city in question isn't getting in on the scam. Totally legal to demand money for work you didn't request if you've got a city permit. Totally illegal to demand money for work you didn't request if you don't have permission from the city. What a time to be alive.

I did that as a college student. We called ourselves the ”Student Community Services”. We ask for a two dollar “donation”. We averaged a dollar a house. Which was really great money in 1978. $50 take home! Cops never bothered us because they loved the easy to see house numbers! Quality was good too!
This scam has been happening for a couple decades. I remember this type of story as a kid. I personally used to go door to door as a kid and offer to paint numbers on curbs. It's a good way to earn cash when you're 12. 😉
As long as the 12 year old gets permission beforehand, I hear way too many stories of kids with lemonade stands being shut down for not having permits.
I was super happy when they came around to paint the curbs in my neighborhood. I gladly paid them $20. It's been a few years now and the paint still looks really good.
I had a curb painter come to my door and offer his services. I told him I wish I could but we couldn’t afford it at the moment. He left and came back minutes later and told me that the lord told him to do the painting for us. He even included an image. I chose the dove with an olive branch. He did a wonderful job and I make sure never to park in front of it so I can show it off. He even sent me a thank you card (with no return address so I could pay him) because I recommended his business on Nextdoor. I guess not all curb painters are as great as he was. Too bad.
If they really were working for the city, the city would be paying them. The city would also notify homeowners that the work would be done. If anyone is working on your property without notifying you first call local law enforcement
I disliked because it's a shitty video. Like, what is it even supposed to mean? Someone paints on the curb in front of your house and somehow you are scammed???

@Dube Fube Yes, I agree, we were stupid! For us to just let her stay over at a friend's house that we would not be able to find? Stupid! Annie was so happy when we found her, poor girl. She was scared, hungry, and basically alone. She worked for that family for 2 years! They made her do all manner of labor over the course of her stay with them. They actually took us to court and won $10,000 for taking care of her that time. They were awarded $20,000 but the judge said since she had worked for them cleaning house, pet sitting, painting the house, mowing the lawn, cleaning up after the meals, etc., etc. We tried to fight it telling the judge they didn't have an address to go on but he said we should have made sure we knew where the house was and at least gotten the phone number of the parents before letting her go to spend the nite. So, we had to pay. We didn't care, tho. We were just so happy to get little Annie back! The judge was a little skeptical about it all since her friend lived only a couple streets over but we told him we couldn't find the house because there was no number for that house posted outside! He asked if we had contacted the police but told him I was so embarrassed at losing her I just couldn't call the police. We just hoped and prayed she would be ok and it turns out, she was! It was such a relief too! Altho, she was a little thin, they had kept her on a limited diet and her hair had grown much longer and appeared unkempt and she had grown somewhat out of her clothes as they didn't want the expense of taking care of her. They were very frugal with the things she needed. Her friend ended up disliking her after she had been there for a couple months and was not very nice to her. Anyway, little Annie, who's not so little anymore ;)) is back home with us all and that's all that matters! Happy Thanksgiving and have a great Holiday!

About every two years, we get a couple of guys doing it the right way. they use good paint and good stencils, and they ask before hand and give a price. I always say yes and I'm happy they do it.
Wow I wish every scammer at least provided a service like this one.
Lol
I would ask them if they could also paint other things. Make them work if they want my money, heh.
my parents got this scam like 20 years ago. Worth it! that spraypaint lasted for years
It's not usually a scam, many HOA's do this exact thing.
HOA are little Nazi like organizations. I would never live in a place w/ an HOA.
My response to them wanting to be paid.......SUE ME!
Ya.. prolly those kids would tell their friends to Paint HUGE Letters on your Garage door ( F### YOU )

@@CigarMick Your solution is irrational, but self-defeating, but stops the reaction cycle. Another way to stop the reaction cycle is not to react (badly). CSA, coz you didn't use a condom...
To use your mailbox, the correspondence must have postage affixed technically.
So now he has your name, address, city, zip code, bank routing number, your checking account number, hell even your signature! Hey, Thanks!

Actually painting the house numbers on the curbs is a decent idea, sometimes it takes years to find the house number you are searching for.
Or I'll be a monkey's uncle before I let her stay there!!
ruddersmoke LMFAO what
Yeah ... some people just can't count.
Lillith Eve by calling this, fascism you are severely disrespecting people who died to true fascism.
Lillith Eve 👌 You should win an award for most civil person on the internet 😂😂😂

Not only would I say no, I’d tell them I’d take them to court to pay me for removing it.
Should have find them and spray paint their license plate numbers on the hood of their car LOL... Then charge them haha
"You're from the city right?"
"Yeah."
"Well they will pay you and if they don't maybe you should quit."

Where on Earth are you guys getting Dassd Schsdu's work ethic, physical appearance and house description from...?
Well shiit there goes my legitimate curb address painting job.

Aaron Rice Dude I love you, you're hilarious
Yep, 'nother case o' the gubamint suppressin' individual opportunity! Opioids are the only answer.

Paint ya own curb so nobody else can
dallon weekes makes me dallon weak I think in some neighborhoods the homeowners association will fine you for painting yours when everyone else’s is bare concrete they want uniformity. This might vary from place to place but if you have homeowners association you ask them first before doing something like that just to feel like a big person.
they usually ask for a donation in my neighborhood.. and i can't hate on that hustle.

Probably a bunch of Joe Biden loving gun banning clowns out there.
This is where I grab my phone camera and tell them "FUCK OFF"! The reaction is priceless and will remain as a treasured memory for all time.
I’d be like , oh...thanks bro (closes door)
I love the clarification at the end of the bit that this is only illegal because the city in question isn't getting in on the scam.
Totally legal to demand money for work you didn't request if you've got a city permit.
Totally illegal to demand money for work you didn't request if you don't have permission from the city.
What a time to be alive.
well thats a shit scam
No it's not!

1.nice reply joke there bud
2.so they were kidnapers
I did that as a college student. We called ourselves the ”Student Community Services”. We ask for a two dollar “donation”. We averaged a dollar a house. Which was really great money in 1978.
$50 take home!
Cops never bothered us because they loved the easy to see house numbers!
Quality was good too!
Criminal damage and preying on the vulnerable
I agree but I said it in a paragraph....sigh..I talk just like I type!
Michelle M oh shut the hell up
wesmatron there's no fucking damage and they didn't exactly hold a gun to their heads and say give me money
You paint on my property, you damaged it. Stick to your own property.
It seems the police don't think your scumbaggery is as entrepreneurial as you like to convince yourself
This chick
Too bad.
I'd powerwash that shit off.
No need...the next rain will do it. Scammers use paint that washes off with water.
Simpsons did it first
Gypsies did it for decades before The Simpsons was even dreamed up.
Rama SutraLP this scam is as old as SPRAY paint they were dp8ng this in the 80s long before the Simpson's was on Tracy Alman show!
+bitterafterlaughter you are correcting spelling of something that was correctly spelt anyway -_-
If they really were working for the city, the city would be paying them. The city would also notify homeowners that the work would be done. If anyone is working on your property without notifying you first call local law enforcement
1k scammers dis liked
I disliked because it's a shitty video. Like, what is it even supposed to mean? Someone paints on the curb in front of your house and somehow you are scammed???
The scam is that they pretend to be doing official government business painting the curb with house numbers, and then convince you to pay for it.
I Can Be a Scammer and get money JUST by dislinking ?!?!??!?!?!? Im in For the ride
TheHe4vy XD
0:06 I know for a fact that the reporters are the ones who put leaves over that
Of all the low down no good ways scammer options, this time they actually provide a service I would pay for. I hate looking for the darn numbers hiding all over homes.
Until it rains...then it washes off. A lot of these scammers use water color.
not an issue if you're in Nevada or California, which would still be very useful.
Many years ago as kids, we used to paint house numbers on curbs for extra money ... but the drill was: knock, ask, paint. collect. Its sad it has turned into a scam :( .
While I don't like the scam part. The curb side painting of the house number is a good thing overall for service delivery and emergency services.
Hell no I wouldn't have paid either
It's actually not a bad idea! My little girl had spent the night at a friend's house and had not come home! It took 2 years before I could locate the house.
Had this happen on my block too. Guy came around again after I told him no the first time a few days later saying “But we already did the work” to which is replied “I never asked you to, or gave you permission to do that” and closed the door. Never came back again
Van Halen did this in the 70’s all over La Jolla San Diego to get beer money before they made it as a major band
