By carrying the long thread back to the beginning im the back it gets to bulky. What am i doing wrong? Im using 14ct aida. Thank you very much. Erma ❤ California ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for this tutorial. I have a question, that is what do you do if there are confetti stitches or a row is interrupted with 2 or 3 squares that are of a different color? So, its impossible to do the long stitch. I don't know what to do. Im working on a 14ct aida. Thank you again Erma ❤California

It depends on the size of your canvas Luciernaga, you don't have to use wool you can put other threads together until you get the required thickness which should be enough to cover the canvas but not to thick you distort it. Have fun experimenting on a small piece to see what works!

Hi Sarah, Are you using floss or perle thread? Also, is the canvas like a painters canvas with a wood frame or are you using a piece of loose canvas stretched on your frame? What size needle? I'm new to this, so clueless:) Thanks, Judy
Hi Judy; I'm using a Madeira Lana thread (50% wool and 50% acrylic) on these samples but you can also use floss or perle. The canvas is a special canvas just for this technique (see this video here: ua-cam.com/video/LnGXneewNUs/v-deo.html) and comes in different sizes (it's measured by the number of threads per inch, this one is 18 count). I've pinned it to a stretcher bar frame which is held in a Versatile table clamp (both available from our shop). Check out our video playlists for videos on frames, clamps and lots more needlepoint stitches. You use tapestry needles (they have blunt ends) for counted techniques such as this. The size of needle depends on the canvas size, stitch and threads. Check out our needle video also! Are you in the US? Your local needlepoint store will help you get going and answer any questions you have. Hope this helps!
So for instance, if your doing an 18 count, would it be 2 or 3? I’m interested in trying this method for sure. I have quite a bit of patterns and if this can cut back on time...... 😊
Hi Sarah! Loving your videos. I have a question about tent stitch. Could I not go back in the opposite direction if I were to to stitch from top to bottom (when going from left to right) instead of bottom to top as stitched coming right to left? Not sure this will make sense?
Hello! I hope you still answer questions. I just bought a tiny carpet at a miniature fair, to stitch. With a pattern! I tried to follow instructions but it still becomes half cross stitches which the designer says should not be used. And I don't get the coverage on back. So it looks ugly. Would you say that on an intricate arts and craft carpet, you still have to stitch from right to left? And start new thread on each row? It has two colours on the carpet. Or will it solve itself? I started with a green colour which makes the pattern and then there is a cream colour used for filler.
Hi Sarah, having done quite a few tapestries in my younger age I now want to try again. Really enjoyed your tutorials, brings everything back to me regards stitch types. I seem to remember that when following a printed canvas I use to do one colour at a time, which makes it a little messy when you change colour. Is it best to have two or three colours active, stitching to holding point in between colour use? Should you complete lines rather than colour areas, which might give a more uniform tension, using the two or three colours to continue the straight line? Robbie
Thank you Sarah - hooray I now understand tent stitch! I'm a beginner and starting my first printed kit canvas which recommends tent stitch. However, the kit instructions show the second line starting below the end of the first line rather than below the start of the first line with the 'up' stitches sharing populated 'up' cells from the first line rather coming up through an empty cell. If I want to avoid the likely disturbance of the wool, what is the best approach? Is it to start the second line at the far end as a continuous thread (some rows are only a couple of cells long) which I know will use more wool but in the long run may be easier to work and a better finish? Is there a better way? (I plan to try basketweave for the background bits)
Always try and take the needle down in a hole that always has a thread in it, but if you are doing a kit you may run out of thread so I would follow the kit instructions unless you can get more thread easily
It's 18 count mono antique (the colour!) canvas. Just Google it and some suppliers should come up. It comes in different counts depending on how small you want to stitch!
If your canvas is covered well on the back then the front will look better Ariana, as you won't be able to see daylight through any of the holes! It's also good if you were making something that would be used (such as a cushion or a footstool for example) as the better the coverage the more durable the item

I usually put my knots out of the way of the area I am stitching so they don't get in the way! You can stitch the area without fighting them, then cut them all off at the end...

Yes cut it off Sophie! Once the thread has been secured by being stitched over it can come off but do check on the back first before you cut!

So can you do the tent stitch on all counts of fabric or is it better on the bigger counts like 25 and higher?
You can do any stitch on any count, just adjust the amount of thread you use accordingly so that it covers the canvas

You can Lisa but it then becomes half cross stitch! Check out my video on this to see what the difference is!

Hi I am trying a needle point project and it says to use 2 tread and there is 3 strands . Is it 2 of the 3 strands?

Yes you can start from either side Di, just make sure you get a long stitch on the back for good coverage of the canvas
