I see myself as a calisthenics athlete, so i do nordic hamstring curls, Natural leg extentions, pistol squats, etc. to keep my legs strong. The gymnast's approach is different and i respect it!!

Sprints are heavily underrated. They´re not only great for explosive strength, but also the no.1 fat burner if you use them in HIIT training. No matter, if you´re gymnast, calisthenics athlet, bodybuilder or whatever. More people should sprint.

I do pull ups and work with rings everyday though to varing degrees of intensity. People who say you can't do pull ups everyday have no idea what they are talking about. This is an excellent vid, I competed back in the 90's and while I trained for all the events, my favorite, and what I was best at, was tumbling. Alot of the training was built around muscular endurance and skills, we would train for three hours a day and while that builds muscle it's not going to bulk you up to your max potential the same way hypertrophy training does. That being said, I got into weightlifting after competing and for the longest time I didn't have to do much to train my legs because of what I gained from gymnastics. All these years I pretty much still don't have to put much into legs. Plus, most gymnasts, not all, but most are short like me, and the shorter you are the easier it is to bulk up, even with that muscular endurance style gymnastics skills training.

On the College Swim Team we trained at the gym 2-3 x's a week and recruited a male gymnast. One day, he was a Model for my Anatomy class. He was thoroughly embarassed but afterward, I said to him, "Your just another Body." It came out wrong because we study the muscles & porportions to correctly draw them.

I put the greatest emphasis on my calves (by doing step full rom raises/ both legs as well as single) :D The least emphasis I put on my quads since I don't need extra mass that would possibly weight me down performing various skills (with the exeption of lateral head which is known as outer tigh). Then I train my inner thighs as well as hips and gluteus minimus and medius (again due to reason I don't want to much mass on my buttocks) :D

Too many are overdoing the weights which is their choice. I've noticed for several years how many young people have died just to gain muscle and have people admire them. Too many drugs and other things are pushing the human body way over the body's limit. I simply want to have a life of health and feel good as long as I can. I'm 72 and a half and have had only 1 common cold in 35 years and know how to eat and prepare my meals and have had a life long study in nutrition and looking for ways to still improve my bodies health. Your videos and ways are wonderful. Keep helping people with there health. Thanks.

Great info! I agree that Gymnasts train to develop skills ... not big muscles. Yes, their training does result in some impressive physiques but that's not the goal. The same can be said of course to any other sport. Besides, every time I hear someone say something about skipping "leg day" I look at those huge monstrosities the BB calls legs and want to skip it myself. That kind of freakish development just doesn't do it for me. Personal choice of course.

I think with a lot of pre-exhaust work on isolation exercises, and hard bodyweight exercises like pistol squats and eventually adding jumps etc. in the mix, a person might build bodybuilder style legs. It might take 2, 3 times the volume but it is not impossible.
Simple weights like water canisters, kettlebells or the weight of a training partner might go very long on the road to muscle hypertrophy.

Can relate. As a female ballet dancer, my structure is super short weightless torso + endless extream strong and flexible legs. We avoid heavy legs like the black plague. Actually, there' s a branche-school named after Balanchine wich changes your body shape drastically. At the same time you win strengthness and endurance, quads, sartorius and harms become thinner, elongated, and way more powerful. Otherwhise, we could not raise and mantain our legs neither at 90° neither touching the ear. Calves are unavoidable due to pointe shoes work but not a big issue.

  • @DoomsdayIsComing73
    @DoomsdayIsComing73 2 роки тому +2

It’s really just a confusion, or lack of understanding, about what certain words, or terms, mean. I think some people confuse hypertrophy with strength. That is to say, the size or striations of a muscle, is commensurate with how strong said subject is. Strength is relative, meaning, one can be lean, or skinny if that makes you happy, and still be strong. One can most definitely look like Ronnie Coleman, and be strong. It depends on HOW you train, and what you are training for. On the flip side of that proverbial coin, one can have big muscles, yet not be as strong as someone who is lean. I think power is often confused with strength. Yes, it stands to reason, one can train to be strong in different ways, but I’d argue that gymnasts, or other such athletes who train for static strength, flexibility, and explosive power, are more completely balanced (strong) than most other athletes. Yes, bodybuilders are strong, without a doubt, however, ask a professional bodybuilder to execute an obstacle course, or a parkour route, and they probably won’t make it halfway through before their muscles just can’t respond in the ways needed to finish. For my money, I’d rather be lean, flexible, and powerful in all angles and body positions, and still be able to move quickly and efficiently. Easier on the joints and all connective tissues, which grossly get neglected when primarily training for hypertrophy. Being strong at the maximum stretch of your connective tissues will make your body much more “bulletproof” and do so much more for your longevity. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

If you want to add weight you stick to simple movements like squat, push up, pull up, dip. They're movements which mostly resemble natural movement of your body. Muscles grow fast but it's the tendons and joints that fail over time with resistance training since endorphins dull the pain. The day after a work out you can't move your arm or on your way home your knee locks up and then you likely need surgery.

@@houssamadjerid i do calisthenics too so I'm not an expert whatsoever in gymnastic competition but as far as i can see from olympics or top tier national events, it would be quite hard to start this late. It's like 15-20 years later than most of the athletes competing.
Maybe there is some amateur stuff or calisthenics competition which is better suited for the later comers

I'm similar to you, started gymnastics at 23 with 3 years training before. You can definitely compete and get to intermediate level quite quickly (1-2 years). Be careful not to injure wrists/shoulders/ankles as this will set you back and calisthenics doesn't prepare you well for floor/vault/pommel. Like the other commentors say though, don't expect to be competing at international level starting this late, but no reason you can't do well and excel at national or local amateur competitions.

Why not just enjoy the journey? Join a gymnastics gym and soak up all that you can. Be a sponge, learn the techniques and progressions and add them to your tool box.
Enjoy the journey and the things you can learn from gymnasts. So much crossover from gymnastics to calisthenics and back.
Gymnastics have so much they can add to your knowledge.

I loved body builders untill they started dropping dead like flies lately! Body building was something I couldn't accomplish anyway because everything they put into they're bodies are unaffordable for me so I don't care to look that way. I do love what Arnold accomplished for that sport, but now it's Corporate poisoning period...and they're products only tend to make they're consumers become nuts!
I'm 67 yrs old now calisthenics one year in and only eat what I can afford and take no supplements but do have some what I didn't expect...'gains'!Since I was young I always watched the Olympics particular to Gymnast Competition which is awesome! I practice some of the bicep holds during chin ups, I wish I knew this growing up...what a burn! Well it's morning for me to start... Stay Awesome!!!

    Im loving calisthenics
But man my legs respond like 5x better, they grow significantly faster than my upper body. I literrally skipped them for like 2 years and in just 7 months they reached the same level as my upper body
So rn im in a big dilema, my legs make calisthenics harder, but i think that theyre my best part

In facts gymnasts have huge legs especially women have over sized legs. So not sure what year you are in.
What I hope you can help with, is providing data on future of gymnasts at older age, and how they live with the injuries, as well as the effects of all pressures and stretches through the years of practice in younger age.
    Thanks.

Female gymnasts tend to be pretty short. So it may appear that they have huge legs. But the truth is, they just look big because they are short.

I don't think gymnast's legs are skinny, they look(and are) strong. Bodybuilder huge legs are just for "asthetics" not performance, and let's be honest, the most of the time those look freaky.
