I don't think a teacher could take the entire day off. There generally are duties an educator can't get done while instructing. Although, there are fewer papers to grade, fewer grades to record, less time to report an absence. What's left to do? There's always lesson plans to prepare, with materials to gather, development of evaluation criteria. Oh yeah, in a one room school, there's the chalkboard to clean, mop the floors all before nap time. What a crazy schedule to have! Time to retire.

I went to a one room school too! Maybe six to eight kids. The teacher would babysit us when my parents needed to go somewhere.

Watching this video in 2021. I just thought about how this girl might have had to move back home or remote school because of COVID. As someone who is seeing first hand the effects isolation has had in high schoolers, my heart breaks for her if she is in this situation.

I'm 25, I totally understand the parents for wanting to live there and not leaving. At the same time, I totally understand the kid wanting to experience broader life. After living in 2 different countries and various cities, I too so badly want to live in a remote beautiful place with a family like the parents. It's my dream.

I went to a small school too (big compared to this one though) where in my final two years there were only 30 girls (all girls school) in my yeargroup when we'd started five years earlier with 50. However I got to know my teachers very well and we had incredible bonds and with it being boarding school the other girls became like my sisters. In my final year I had three classes, in two of them there was only one other student (same student in both classes and teachers always said we acted and fought like an old married couple) and the other I was the only student. My graduating class went through a lot together and saying goodbye was an extremely emotional day for everyone both staff and students because some of us including me having been there from the age of 11 but there were some who'd been there since the age of four

Hmmm... So if this is the "last graduation ever" does that mean if any families move there with kids that the kids will have to travel to the main land for school or are they assuming that there will never be any children on the island again?

according to the 2000 census the population was 52, an article from January 2020 listed it as 10. So it only seems to be getting smaller. Whereas in the summer it raises to around 400 - so they're probably not expecting too many more year round residents. it is interesting to wonder what if someone did though!
