  • I tried local Canada and New England food on my last cruise on the Caribbean Princess. With stops in Newport, Boston, Portland, Saint John, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, and Quebec City I was able to try many of the local food recommendations. Lobster, Stuffies, Beaver Tails, Donairs, Poutine and more are covered in this cruise food review.

      I couldn't eat Poutine, I don't want brown gravy on fries, nor, do I care for fries, that's a NO for me, I'll stick with any kind of seafood! 28.00 for a lobster roll here at one restaurant in Ma and it's stuffed with lobster, delicious!!       I'm not into seafood of any kind, so that's out. Good thing since I would have gone ballistic with a $48 lobster roll. I'm from the south but have Canadian friends who have strongly urged me to try poutine if I ever get the opportunity. So when we had a local food truck meet, I was so happy to see a Canadian food truck that was serving poutine. I absolutely loved it. My serving was giantic so I shared it, but it was really yummy. Tony, did you have an opportunity to try Tim Horton's?

      Definitely going to try the donair. I'll probably have a beaver tail too...but it looks like it's just a flat version of a churro. :)
      I'm not a lover of seafood, but when we go on our New England/Canada cruise, my husband will be in heaven.

      If you had just walked a few more feet passed Chez Samy and instead gone into La Lapin Saute you might have had a different option of poutine.

    Tony, as a Canuck, I can confirm that some poutines are better than others. Often times the fries, or the gravy aren’t just right and even the cheese curds can make or break the taste.
    It definitely is similar to having a steak at the old Ponderosa Steak House and then concluding that all steaks are gross - it’s all about how it’s made.
    That’s why as Canadians our poutine quest never ceases. 🤣🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

      Growibg up I ate poutines, but it was grated potato with pork on the inside the ball of grated potatoes then placed in cheese cloth and boiled. Anyone else ever had these?

    First rule of poutine: it is HIGHLY variable in flavor, depending on where you go - and yes, you can get it with other things on it, and some restaurants will have a whole poutine section of the menu. At least you had poutine where it's really from (it's not really "Canada's national dish," it's "Quebec's provincial dish"). It only became really popular across the country sometime in the 1990s.

    As a french Canadian, all I can say Tony is that Poutine's are different from each places you visit. Every restaurant has their own receipe. The quality and cut of the fries, the brand of the cheese used, the quality of the sauce, each is different. You'll need to try it again elsewhere and your experience will most likely be totally different. It's one of the dish that's never the same.

    A couple things Tony! Firstly, in Sydney, it’s actually a fiddle, not a violin. They might be offended, as it’s a very rich Gaelic and Celtic community! As for the poutine, if the gravy isn’t good, the poutine won’t be good. It’s the one ingredient that has to be made right as that’s where the bulk of the flavor comes from. If the fries aren’t crunchy to start, that’s also a problem. A good poutine, even a classic poutine, is really good when you have the crunchy texture of the fries, the bomb flavor of the gravy, and the gooey stringiness of the melty cheese!

    I am a native Rhode Islander, was born in Newport, and in my younger years was a Newport city tour guide and tour guide at the Breakers. When I first began my Breakers tour guide job I was waiting in the tour guide lounge for my next tour. I heard a banging at the back door and went to see who was banging and it was an elderly woman in a shocking pink sweat suit carrying several Walmart bags. I opened the door for this woman and asked her if I could help her carry her bags and she said no and quickly as she could scurried up the stairs to the 3rd floor which originally the maids quarters. Later did I learn from one of the tour guides that woman in the pink sweat suit that I thought was one of the mansion maids was the Countess Sylvia Szapary who was Cornelius Vanderbilt the original owner of the Breakers great great granddaughter who lived in what was then a 3rd floor family apartment. That tour guide also told me that the Countess would often hide and listen to what the tour guides said to the tourists to make sure the they were not saying anything negative about the Vanderbilt family. 😮

    I had poutine for the first time at an Irish pub in Sydney NS in October 2023 not long after you were there, and I wasn’t expecting much. I really liked it. I think the gravy is what makes or breaks it.

    We're from Australia 🇦🇺 we tried poutine in Victoria BC in 2019, & really enjoyed it with topping of pulled pork, yummy gravy & cheese churds. It was delicious as was recommended to us.

    When we did a Canada/New England cruise, we ate lobster roll in each port. But I had done research beforehand of lobster roll in each port. In Portland we ate at a place called Becky's Diner. It was a diner, and not a fancy place. The lobster rolls and clam chowder were great. The portions were huge, and the prices were the cheapest of any of the ports. I recommend it!!!

    The poutine sounds very much like a northern English dish, we call them chips (thick cut potatoes, like fat fries!) with gravy poured over, also in the south we put grated cheddar cheese (proper cheddar, not your orange stuff!) so that it melts on the potato. Some just combine the two! Great after a night out at the pub!! 🍺🍺🍟🧀😀❤️🇬🇧

    Keep trying on the poutine. Finding a good one is like trying to find good wings outside of Buffalo, but it can be done. Tip would be to look for a high rated bbq place that offers them, they can make some wild gravy with all those available smoky drippings that really makes a big difference. Curd quality varies widely too. I was determined on a road trip trying at least 5 or 6, and one of them with some brisket on top really stood out. There are places that will do their fries in duck fat on my to do list. Those curds didn't look remotely close to melting either, that's a problem. Don't give up!

      @@jojosadventureagency Trying to find crispy wings outside of buffalo that are actually (par) fried, not baked, and not breaded, or coated in corn starch, is still a task in a lot of the country. The word "Buffalo" gets thrown around pretty loosely haha

      @@jojosadventureagency lol seriously, are you from Buffalo? Even there, the hit to miss ratio isn't great, but as soon as you leave you're lucky to hit 1 in 20 good. When I went driving through canada just hitting random spots for poutine I got the same exact vibe.

    There is Poutine and then there is great poutine. The poutine you had looks like it had too many cheese curds. Plus the hot gravy is suppose to be poured on the cheese to melt it. Secret of great poutine is well done fries, great cheese curds and hot gravy. By the way try it with barbecue pulled pork on top

    🇨🇦 Watching from Saint John, New Brunswick. I agree poutine can be overrated. Now if you get the holiday version-less curds, more gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce ( if you like it, I skip it) and instead of regular fries it’s waffle fries. Now it’s Christmas in a bowl and so good. If you come back to Saint John and want amazing ice cream, Bella’s is the place and it’s walking distance from the ships. The ice cream is home made on site and the waffle cones fresh. Last time I was there my waffle cone was still warm. Would you believe I’ve lived in Canada my whole life, and I’m old 😆, and I’ve never had a Beaver Tail??? So glad you cruised to our part of the world❤️I hope the weather was good when you visited. We get a lot fog here on the water.

    My favorite potato dish is cabbage mashed potatoes with butter, cook both cabbage and potatoes separate until soft, mash them with butter, salt, pepper, you do not need milk as the cabbage will add the moisture, I use a mixer after I mash them.

    I had poutine at a sit down restaurant with a real fork and it was delicious! It was in Quebec City and the restaurant was off the beaten path. Give it another try 😮

    I would suggest if you cruise into Maine have a picnic in the park. Go to a local supermarket chain get soft shell lobsters cooked (15 minutes to steam) for current price (around 12.00 a pound now), some potato salad, a drink and napkins . Pulling apart a lobster is messy. This should be the same in Massachusetts also, price may vary for lobster. Home cook food I would suggest Becky's Diner is probably a 3/4 mile walk. They also serve lobster.

      I recommended Becky's also. Loved that place. Great prices and portions. The lobster rolls and clam chowder were great.

    Poutine is not a dish I’d like, but the gravy is what makes it. My sisters love it, but if you get a bad gravy, you get a bad poutine.
    As for the donair, their are plenty of recipes online for it. The best donair sauce I had was in North Rustico, PEI. Also in N. Rustico, there was a great ice cream shop called Cricker's Creamery.
    Maybe one day I’ll cruise up to Canada.

    Beavertail, the best is maple. Delicious. Ok, we 're still friends but Poutine is delicious. We grew up with it and if the gravy and cheese aren t to your taste, it could be a turn off. The cheese curds are waxy chewy and stretchy. The gravy is a rich brown sauce of yummieness. And you tried it in Quebec where it originated. Don, make sure he tries it again another time. Even our local Harvey s make a good Poutine. Keep inspiring.

    As a Maritimer who moved to Europe, you can make donair sauce at home pretty easily, it's basically garlic powder, vinegar and sweetened condensed milk - copycat recipes are available online. We eat it with garlic fingers as well and I sometimes have to make Maritimes style garlic fingers with donair sauce at home to satisfy the craving. I've never tried to make the donair meat but I bet it's doable. Cows t shirts were a cult item when they first started, spoofing famous movies and pop culture with cows in the scenes, they were as much about the merch as the ice cream and cows t shirs were everywhere. I think you also just got unlucky with bad poutine. It's great when it's made well. Needs to be hot, fresh crispy fries and really excellent gravy.

    I guess I'm a typical southern gal. I like to go to my favorite Texas Roadhouse and get the steak bites (medium well) with gravy, mushrooms and onions with corn and smashed potatoes and graving . And I'd love their yeast rolls with honey butter. I just had Thanksgiving dinner but talking about this meal is a complete joy!.

    As a new Englander, my favorite local foods are fried scallops, stuffies, clam cakes, hot lobster roll (better than cold IMO) and steak tips

    Tony, I recently took that trip and loved it. I did the lobster fishing boat. I bought a freshly caught lobster for $10.00 and then went across the way to a restaurant they had ties to and they steamed the lobster and gave me the rest of the meal for $12.00. Great experience. I also had a lobster roll and was very underwhelmed. I had a much better on on the Carnival Horizon - 2 for $18.00 with fries which was excellent. I did not try the Beaver Tail😢 but I loved the trip. 🎉🎉🎉

    As a Canadian, I have to say that donairs are overrated. Just get a shawarma with all the usual fixings instead.
    Agree with the comment that not all poutines are created equal. Good fries are 70% of the equation. But you need good gravy and proper cheese curds to make the whole thing work.
    You should take a trip to Montreal sometime (when you're not calorie counting) and go on a poutine/smoked meat food crawl.

    Wowzers on the cost of that lobster roll, thanks for the warning! Poutine is not for everyone but if you like fries, gravy & cheese curds it can be an incredible combo if you get it at the right spot. Don’t give up yet, try again next time you come back 😁

    I LOVE that you had Stuffies! That's a hyper local specialty for sure. Lobster rolls are fine, but I'd personally rather just rip apart a steamed lobster with butter running down my chin onto my plastic bib. I love poutine, but I swear it's best after a night of adult beverages.🤭🍻

    I live in CT and looked at some New England cruises with NCL since I had a credit. I wouldn't put a sweater on for a cruise or subject myself to the kind of end of summer early September weather we have here. My idea of a cruise is palm lined beaches and hot sun But enjoy.

    Took the Canada cruise out of Baltimore last year and loved it. I can see doing the one-way trip from Baltimore to Quebec City and either taking the B2B to Baltimore or the Amtrak Adirondack to NYC.

    I’m from Montreal Canada . The best poutine is found in the EasternTownship région of Quebec where the « squiky » cheese is made and the poutine was created 😊 you went to the wrong place!😂

    Poutine is the best food group! If you like donairs, then you should have the donair poutine. Had one in Montreal a few years ago. Yum!

    We were on Jewel OTS 2 weeks after your cruise to Canada and ate at Chez Sami's where we passed on the Poutine. We saw others eating thus at other restaurants in QC. We did try the poutine at Rosie's in Portland and it was delightful. They made it with home fries instead of French fries. The cheese curds were melted in a tasty brown gravy. It was far more appealing than what we saw in Canada.

      The cheese curds, in a good poutine, will melt into the gravy. That's what makes the poutine. Those cheese curds at Chez Sami's looked awful.

    Cows is awesome! We found it in Halifax on our honeymoon 28 years ago and then again in Niagara-on-the-Lake for our 2d honeymoon last year!

    Tony, just got back from Niagara Falls over the weekend and tried the Beaver Tail with lemon per your recommendation; it was the bomb! The Beaver Tail shop called it the Sunshine and they said it was quite popular. Thanks for the heads up!

    I confess to being a Canadian who has never tried a beavertail and was going to say or poutine until another comment reminded me that I did have a pulled pork poutine once that was pretty good.

    The lobster we saw was 35$ passed..Mary’s popcorn….three bags, lasted the remainder of our 11 days on the cruise.

You have to try tourtière, pea soup, ragoût de boulettes & pattes de pork, blueberry pie, Ashton poutine or Victoriaville-Drummondville poutine, cranberry products, chomeur pouding, baked beans, maple syrup products, crepes, bagels, delicious cheeses, cretons, sucre à la crème and so much more...     I am from Quebec and love poutine. You had it in a tourist area so it is possibly not what I would call a real poutine. This is a great dish but it depends on who is making it just like any other food. Next time check out the reviews of the restaurants before you try it again and I am sure you won't be disappointed.

    Good morning Tony from Nova Scotia! I must say I giggled 🤭 every time you said Do-nair. The ‘o’ is long. Just in case you wanted to know. I totally understand miss pronouncing words you never heard before 😁. My husband tried his first one this year. He figured he should have it from a place called King of Donair. Figuring, they must be the best. Was he wrong. They mostly focus on pizza. I have been trying to get him to taste one from another place. Maybe someday I will win that one🤞. I have not had a Beaver Tail in years. Now, I really want one 😊. I’m not a big fan of poutine myself. Some people call it a heart attack in a bowl. But, like the Donair, or any food really. If you can. Try dishes from different places. I am very glad you enjoyed my favourite dish the Donair on your cruise. I always have mine as a sub 😁. Thank you so much for sharing with us.     Your reaction to poutine made me laugh. When I visited my son in Winnipeg we went to eat at a lake close by that served poutine with what we call walleye (fish) in Indiana. I was determined that I would not like poutine. In order to be a good grandma in teaching the little ones to try everything, I tried it, and I loved it. Glad we don't have it where I live or my weight would be in major trouble. Love your videos.

    We were in Quebec about the same time you were but as you were arriving we were leaving. We stayed in the Chateau Frontenac, they did have wonderful coffee in the gold lounge. We did eat in Bistro Le Sam one night, food was fabulously. We also ate at Le Petit Chateau which has patio dining. Our stop in Charlottetown we did a foodie tour stopping at Island Honey Wine Company for a mead tasting, Carr’s Oyster Bar to see them shuck and sample oysters and then we went to Deep Roots Distillery where we sample a wide selection of what they distill such as limoncello to moonshine, even a maple liqueur. It was in Sydney, NS that we tried our first beavertail that had chocolate hazelnut spread on it, very good but very messy. We also had a Lobster Roll from Lord Fin Fish & Chips near where the cruise ship docked, absolutely one of the best rolls we have had, I think it might have been about $28(?) In Halifax, we had another beavertail but the classic (not as messy)but so good. In Portland, we went to the Portland Head Light and there was a Bite into Maine trailer there that had another Lobster roll, another good one. In Boston we ate at Legal Sea Food, they had really good scallops, somehow my husband scored extra scallops too.🥰 We definitely need to go back and revisit some of these places and also find new ones to try.

    Ok, in Boston you need the baked beans, and more north is Pork Pie. Go to any Red Arrow restaurant and you can get both those any time of day. P.S. Adam Sandler promotes Red Arrow restaurants.

    Growing up close to British Columbia in Washington state I had no idea what poutine was, since it was not common in Western Canada. Now it is on many menus in the Vancouver BC area. Not a fan, but I am not much of a fan of fries and would rather have hash browns or roasted potatoes. New England style clam chowder is very common in Washington state and many cafes compete in clam chowder competitions. If you get to Western Canada try a Nanaimo Bar.

    Canadian Poutine is not my thing either. Most potato dishes I enjoy, however my second potato dish I do not enjoy are garlic mashed potatoes. Usually waaaaay too much garlic is used in the preparation of this potato dish. Happy Thanksgiving!

    We did the same cruise in 2019 and went to some of the same establishments. Food was awesome at all stops but I'm not a beavertail fan. We make our own poutine and its delicious. You like what you like. Good show.

    My bff and I took a Canada and New England cruise last year. We loved the lobster poutine at Alison’s in Kennebunkport. The gravy was more of a lobster bisque type sauce. It was amazing. Agree the original beaver tails with lemon are really good.

    Born and raised Canadian - poutine needs the gourmet sauce (ketchup) and then it is magnificent.

    Sadly my province is landlocked so you cant get here by ship, but ignore the hype on Quebec's poutine and come out to try some Alberta Beef. Come ride the Rocky Mountaineer through the Rockies, stop in Calgary for some Big T's Barbeque. It will make sure you forget the poutine..... lol. Nothing better than the Rockies and then some Alberta Beef Brisket at Big T's ♡

    I have to take exception to your comment about Poutine.
    Although, poutine is not everyone’s go to food choice, the same can be said about any food.
    I personally love poutine. However, it may very well depend about where you get it.

    We visited, Halifax, Quebec and Sydney this year on our world cruise. Loved the Poutine and while the lobster roll was tasty it cost a bomb. Never got to try the beaver tail or icecream sadly

    If you get to Germany you need to eat doner kebap. I love then. I’ve also had good ones in France and Italy. So inexpensive and most shops also have pizza

    My favorite Poutine was at a restaurant, Nesters, in Burlington, Vermont (Is that a cruise port? Beware of Champ!). It had Swiss cheese melted onto the fries with turkey gravy. We called it a heart attack on a plate. I'm not sure I would like Poutine with cheese curds, but would love to try it.

    Bonjour... from Quebec... actualy Montreal... and POUTINE is different from one restaurant to another... really different. A good oil for potatoes. Cheese curds, also colloquially called cheese en crottes, is a fresh curdled cheddar cheese, originally from Quebec... AND the sauce. All Quebecers love poutine except dietitians. Everyone has their favorite restaurant. Damn it's good after a few beers.

    Tony, the wife and I did a 7 day roadtrip to Canada this year, and did not have Poutine until the last hour we were there. For us brown gravy, cheese curds and french fries, what was there not to love? We would have eaten it every day. But I could eat brown gravy out of the can.

    Hi Tony, I live just north of Quebec City and I've never tried a poutine at that restaurant. Chez Ashton is a restaurant with a very good reputation for poutine's. They are only in Quebec City though so you'll have to come back and give un a second chance. 🙂

    DONAIR MEAT RECIPE
    Double Recipe to fill a Bread Pan
    1 pound ground beef
    1 teaspoon ground black pepper
    1 teaspoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon paprika
    1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    1 teaspoon dried oregano
    1 teaspoon MSG (Optional)
    Mix all ingredients and put meat in a bread pan. Let rest in refrigerator overnight.
    Bake at 350 for 60min. Turn over halfway through cooking time. Let cool and slice thinly.
    Fry sliced meat in pan before making donairs.
    SAUCE
    Make a few hrs ahead of time
    1 can sweetened condensed milk
    1/3 cup white vinegar, or to taste
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    6 large pita bread rounds - or Naan Bread. Sprinkle water on Naan and fry in Pan to soften
    and warm it.

    I agree about our poutine being underwhelming. I find that if the restaraunt uses home made gravy and not crappy canned it is better. But my favorite is breakfast poutine, hashbrowns, bacon and hollondaise sauce along with cheese curds. Mmmmm. I had it in Quebec City in a hole in the wall place and absolutely loved it.

    I love donairs so much!!! The best are slightly spicy. Lots of recipes online for the sauce, evaporated milk, sugar and vinegar...mmm!

    I would never miss a Beaver Tale! Too many flavors to still try.
    In Bar Harbor we found soft serve Blueberry ice cream. Haven't found any flavor better since then.

    We first tried Poutine at Epcot after I watched a utube video about must eats at Disney World. It was really good. We also tried the fancy poutine at the steakhouse in the Canadian Pavilion at Epcot. Amazing! (don't let them pour the wine reduction all at once, the poutine will get soggy by the time you finish). We just got back from Montreal. I had several poutines while there, some much better than others. What did knock my socks off was the Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich. I would go back just for that.
    Same with the lobster roll. Some are just better than others (and I'll never pay $48 for one, that's just a rip-off.)
    BTW New England Clam Chowder is the only Clam Chowder, the rest are clam soup.

    We have a semi-poutine dish at a local place here in the Los Angeles area. The place is called The Hat and they have what they call Wet Fries. It's the fries with gravy but no cheese curds. I had heard of poutine but never really knew what it was until about ten years ago. "Oh," I said, "wet fries with cheese curds. Okay." LOL.
    My sister and I do actually love the Wet Fries at The Hat.

    I live in Québec City. I never heard of Chez Samy. It is probably a tourist trap. When it comes to poutine, it does vary greatly. Some restaurants nail it and others don't.

    I have lived in the Central/Southern USA (AR, OK, TX) and my favorite potato dish has got to be Hash Brown Casserole with frozen hash browns combined with over a pound of cheese, sour cream, spices, and after baking for 40 minutes, then top with a load of French's Fried Onions (can't have this one too often now, because husband says I'm Sabotaging our Low Carb Diet!! I can't help it, my good recipes are High Carb, hence I am Fluffy! (Reference Comedian Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias)

    What makes a good poutine is the gravy. It shouldn't be just a brown gravy but a poutine gravy - different taste.

    Lived for many years in downeast Maine in a small fishing village on the Canadian border. Lobster rolls and fried haddock were the local specialties. Poutine - echh!.

    Love Mary’s popcorn. If you didn’t love the poutine you got it at the wrong place. So but I am Canadian. And I was in old Quebec City last year. And I had the best poutine 3 Brasseurs. This is a great restaurant.

    I did the same cruise, repositioning from Ft. Lauderdale to Quebec this summer. I agree with everything you said. Best lobster was in Boston in Quincy Market over the famous Stadium in Bar Harbor. Tried poutine in Quebec and Montreal both were underwhelming. Beavertails I could eat at every stop but husband did allow it, due to the calories. Cows was just ok.

    Looking at the bowl of poutine that you had, the fries looked lower quality and the cheese curds looked like they might not be melted enough. I've always preferred mine at a pub where they get the fries cooked properly and the cheese curds better melted (I had a rough bowl that looked like the one you pictured at a Canadian BK once). I don't mind Poutine without extras, but it is great with pulled pork or with mushrooms, peppers, and onions.

    Poutine is best with gravy. The French version is typically made with a brown "sauce," and I agree, it is underwhelming but edible.
    I hope you enjoyed the visit to Atlantic Canada. It is the home of the best folks on this planet.
