I love hearing these stories, even if Verlon is just talking. To me this is spoken poetry.

I found Guys telephone number in a Texas arts/music book & called Guy to find out why he had not released any music in 11 years.A women answered the phone[susana?] & asked what I was calling about.I told her.I sat on hold for about 10 minutes before I hung up.About 3 months later Old Friends came out.I wish he would have picked up.I would have told him how important his music was to his fans.

When Guy decided to put together an ensemble to present his tunes, he tapped Pete Gorisch (bass player) and me. It was 1969. We played a series of gigs around town before he headed for Los Angeles, where he secured a writers contract and an advance that allowed him to move to Nashville. He visited us once and offered to submit any of my tapes to studio cats in Nashville, but I never did (there are 1,897 guitar players in Nashville - I figured they didn't need another one.) Besides, I had no tapes. I'm just a playing bum. I did teach his son Travis to play, which paid off later when he moved to Nashville and toured with Guy. IMHO, Guy never sounded better than when he played with Travis, whose vocal harmony lines were spot on, as were his very musical bass solos (Guy never played solos; he wrote tunes.) I was Guy's first guitar player.

@@sarcasticcrypto I remember our first trio live performance. During one o' the tunes I looked over at Guy and tears were streaming down his cheeks. 'What's wrong?' I asked him. He smiled at me and said, 'It's just so beautiful.' He was overwhelmed at hearing his tunes 'fleshed out,' so to speak. He was seeing his future, and it was clearly promising.
