    I just found out Tony Delk was 6'1 and had a wingspan of 7'2. WHAT. Look at those long arms man, amazing

  • @jmarshall88

    Shows how much the game has changed that not that long a guard could score 53 w/o making any 3's.

    In high school we had to pick him up at half court. He could always shoot like this, just didn't get much opportunity in the league.

    The title of this video needs to be renamed. Tony Delk was not an unlikely 50-point scorer. He buried seven 3-pointers in the 1996 NCAA title game. He was a McDonald's All-American. He was an All-American in college. He was a Top 20 pick in arguably the greatest NBA Draft in league history (1996). He once scored over 70 points in a high school game and buried nine triples in a college game. Jason Kidd didn't nickname him "Buckets" for nothing. He always knew how to put the ball in the hole. This particular game was a long-time coming for Delk, as he stuck it to his former team, the Kings.

      NBA ShowtimeHD Not what in the NBA? Jeremy Lin would be a surprise 50 point scorer. I could pick a slew of players that would be surprise 50 point players. The point is, those who followed Delk were not surprised at all when the 6'1 guard poured in 53, 'cause he had been a scoring machine at every level and could shoot, and could score in bunches. When it happened, it wasn't surprising. Going on revisionist history without knowing Delk's backstory, and looking at his stats, which never tell the entire story of a player anyway, then it looks what you would label "unlikely."

    How is he an unlikely scorer? Anybody who watched him at UK knew he was a straight dog!! Tony Delk like many others would have been starrs in the league had their teams management had a Brain. He was a huge part of probably the best NCAA basketball team in NCAA basketball history at Kentucky in 1996. Well coached, high IQ, and could shoot the rock and score with the best. Anybody who is a true basketball fan knew who Tony Delk was back in the day.

    its interesting how height plays a factor in your role. hes 6'1 and was playing primarily point guard and when he ended up with jason kidd he became a 2 and just worried about getting buckets. i guess what im trying to say is that its better for your skillset to define your position, not necessarily your height, but of course in today's nba its different

    • @user-ff1ez5sy5h
      @user-ff1ez5sy5h 6 місяців тому +1

      yep. undersized 2s often jus need to pair up with a big pg. they did that with iverson. and now with kyrie. as long as the small 2 can cover 1s you're good - you're jus switching roles on defense. sometimes you gota be creative and play the hand you're dealt as a coach 😟

    i remember when my celts traded joe johnson for tony and rodney rodgers and it would have worked out perfectly for a few years had rodney not signed with the nets after a half a season with us. they were 2 of the 4 best bench players in the league at the time along with aaron mckie and bobby jackson

    • @erickvelazquez7554

      Joe Johnson and Paul Pierce chemistry would've been wayyy more solid 👌

    • @theclassicmanila-style8435
      @theclassicmanila-style8435 4 роки тому

      Man rodney rogers compliments the celtics offense, him , paul pierce and antoine had similar skillskets of course pierce was elite, but all 3 can post up and shoot the 3, joe johnson would have future. Paul was left with guys like ricky davis , jiri welsch instead of having joe as his partner

    • @JustinBlazzzee
      @JustinBlazzzee 4 роки тому

      The Classic Manila-style Ricky was a great player to have come off the bench, but was definitely not a star like Joe was for a good 5 years. But we didn’t trade Joe for Ricky.
      Joe and Paul had similar styles. Both slashers who could shoot deep and had nice mid range games. Antoine was the opposite. Chucked 3’s, had good court vision and was sneakily one of the best technical rebounders in the game. When he chose to box someone out, they were done for. Didn’t matter which forward it was against.
      Keeping Joe long term would have garnered the C’s more wins between 03-06, but that’s where it ends. And it probably wouldn’t have garnered them any more wins than if they kept Rodney and Delk and never traded Antoine for LaFrentz. Pierce and Joe were NOT beating the Pistons or Spurs during that time. Not unless KG suddenly came along, which he did. And when he did, we got Ray anyway so Joe was an afterthought. Didn’t need him. Ray was better for that team than Joe would have been. Ray was much less ball dominant than Joe and that was what that team needed.
      If it weren’t for KG messing his knee up in early 2009, the C’s would have likely won 3 straight titles.. In which case, no one would even remember Joe Johnson was ever a Celtic aside from us.

    • @theclassicmanila-style8435
      @theclassicmanila-style8435 4 роки тому

      @@JustinBlazzzee keeping joe and letting him be the player he is would have pushed the bottons for the GM to make some win now moves atleast. They got in to this weird rebuilding mode, I'm sure they want to tank but they had paul pierce to atleast bring them to the 1st round or 2nd round. Guys like marcus banks and gerald green didnt turn out to the be the players they were hoping for. We love paul pierce man it would have been much better if he had more playoff success aside from the 02 run before kg got in.

    • @JustinBlazzzee
      @JustinBlazzzee 4 роки тому +1

      The Classic Manila-style I agree it would have been fun to see them do more pre KG. But do you think the C’s would have beaten the Pistons or the Spurs? I don’t think so. So yes, trading Joe cost us some fun, but I don’t think it cost titles.

      I kinda knew about earlier stuff, but I def watched a ton of greatest games and am very into sports documentaries.
      I may not have watched him play, but I will defend Larry Bird's status as an all-time great to the death for instance. Without throwing out his back it would be a debate of where you'd rank him vs Lebron IMO... but ask a 22 year old and they'll think you're out of your mind for saying so.
      I also once saw people saying Hakeem was 'overrated' which made me freak out.

How about Kwame Brown, Kendrick Perkins, White Mamba, Greg Ostertag, Omer Asik, Kousta Koufus, Greg Kite, Paul Mokeski, Eric Williams, Chris Dudley, Milos Milicic, Eric Snow, and any of dozens of other players. Thank God we have old footage of true competitors like Delk to remember what it used to be like. Delk was awesome in college and has always been underrated maybe because he was never flashy. But he always got the job done. And he did it while keeping his mouth shut instead of being a disrespectful idiot which is the normal today. I stopped watching the NBA after Magic and Bird retired. Thereafter, ratings suffered so a few years later NBA Commissioner David Stern turned the game into cheap entertainment instead of a competitive sporting event. Stern ruined the NBA around 20 years ago when he turned it into a circus show with ball hogs and dunk fest garbage. This is why the NBA is synonymous with selfish ball hogs and show boaters. Also, BB players have gotten much taller over the decades and the rims were never raised so that the game favored tall players lacking skills. If the rims were raised a couple of feet you'd see a much better NBA with players who have real skills like decades ago. But none of this even matters since most NBA games are fixed. NBA is a joke. And now college BB isn't far behind. I prefer watching table tennis or anything else that remains competitive and has not been tarnished with excessive money and corporate sponsorships.
