How does the race direction control the communication between the skipper and their team to ensure the skipper does not receive any help for example regarding routing etc? Thanks Florian!!
Question for next Q&A. Hi Florian, can you please explain why the official Vendee Globe logo contains a red stylised Kiwi? Is it a nod to past NZ global legends such as Whitbread sailors Sir Peter Blake and Grant Dalton? Thanks in advance.😊
You have made the race that I have enjoyed watching for years, more entertaining! Instead of the stodgy bs. It’s great to hear a sailers perspective. Thank you for your efforts!
Merry Christmas and thanks for the once-again amazing insight into this amazing race around the world. My mornings can't possibly merge into afternoons until I've heard your daily comments and views. It's all really spectacularly amazing! And you're coffee man like me, so that alone qualifies you as a true "bro". That being said, the whole world is watching not only the leaders but also the totally marvellous Pip Hare pre and post dismasting! What a great woman! Is there any chance the Vendée website could put up her numbers instead of the sterile "abandon" currently indicated when one clicks on her vessel. Do you have any pull with them? Stuck to my screen in between Christmas events to see what transpires after the next Cape! Salut. AP
Hey Florian here's a question for the Q&A: could you talk a little bit more about yourself? What's your background and how do you know all this stuff? You mentioned a couple of times you took part in the Ocean Race but what was your path to that and do you have any plans to compete in the big races yourself?
Great intro music with Boris, thanks Florian. It had a purity about it. What was it?? Please....that would be my Christmas present. I'll give you something next time we head your way.😅😅 Rgds from Australia.
What are the specific differences between Charlie and Yoann's boats? You say Paprec is better downwind and Macif is better upwind (slightly in both cases), but why? What are the features of the boats that makes this so?
Great coverage of a thrilling event! Can you describe more fully how the autopilot operates? Does it control more than just the helm? If "no" does the skipper adjust sail settings/trim when sailing under autopilot (and if so, how often)? Thanks.
Great commentary, and fantastic filming, apart from not understanding some of the languages nill dubbing lol, I have watched from Day one from AUS melbourne and would love to catch up with PIP should the opportunity avail., the vast majority of people could never understand the WHY and how, it is definitely not for everyone , would have loved to do this 40 years ago lol,
I wonder how does the rest of the fleet - especially those who are not even past Tasmania, or Cape Leuwin - feel when they hear first boats have passed Cape Horn already...
Wind is obviously one thing but once rounding Cape Horn (which I do not have to mention to this audience writes it's very own laws) and turning North the Brazilian current becomes a huge factor.
Hey Florian, can you give some insight into the reasoning by the governing body to disallow the use of 'T' foil rudders for this VG? I feel sure that it will happen in the futute, hopefully for the 28/29 edition. The foiling stability is much improved by using these, as proven on other water craft. Merry Xmas and good luck to us all in 2025, especially these very courageous lone sailors! Cheers
Hi Florian, again this question: how can Boris do a full capsize turn with Malizia and nothing happens? How is that technically possible? And - Merry Christmas 🎄- best regards, Anke
They should install heating for more comfort. It's super light and generators produce sufficient energy. .... At least a heated jumpsuit. This would be incredible efficient
Could you possibly go over how Pip Hare was able to rig a sail after being dismasted?Did she use one of her spreader bars/ whisker poles? Awesome coverage!
Hi There from Tennessee USA. I have a two part question, Is there any kind of toilet on board or is it a bucket with a lid? And also, do they have a watermaker? Thank you for the show, I watch every day. Cheers, Gerry.
I think she wants to complete her race as much as she can, some kind of way, by heading to Melbourne on her own. Having some media exposure with her “Kon-Tiki” adventures is not a bad thing too. And it’s more ecological.
That's just way to dangerous... Sailboats have a real tendency to nose dive..while being towed...most times the lead boat can't even see the boat their towing. Because of wave heights and periods between them ...etc
Can someone explain to me why Charlie and Yoanne can Go at 25 and 21 knots while Boris and the others there only go 20 or 17 knots with 21 knots wind? It can not just be waves, or? I found this to be a repetitive pattern. I thought Boris also has a new gen Foiler trimmed to southern sea conditions and courses. I looks like the race is decided, doesn’t it, Charlie or Yoanne, one of them will surely win. What do you think?
There are many possible factors that can't be narrowed down to a single reason. Often, it comes down to the skipper's preferences. Some skippers are risk-averse and sail more conservatively, while others push their yachts to the limit. I've often heard them say they could be going faster but decided for slower speeds to lessen the risk of damage or to have a more comfortable passage in a given situation.
@@jamesaron1967 Thank you . Again in this morning update, Yoann and Charlie, with 15 knots wind go almost 24 knots, Boris and yannick, with 23 knots wind, go 10 and 15 knots. Similar course, just 1m more of waves. Why would they push. They lost like 600 - 700 nm over the course of the last week. And Jeremie just a bit ahead of them, same wind, goes 21.6 - like wtf - Thomas also over 20. I feel they all want to win and take some risks and a lot of hardship upon them, if they could increase speed with acceptable risk, they would do it. This way, they are just losing so much ground, this must hurt them more than me 🙂
@@MeteoriteClash I realize it looks odd but none of us are privy to all the goings on each skipper is experiencing on board. I doubt that it's a significant design difference other than the foils. Probably issues some of them are facing which are compromising their performance, provided they are in identical conditions and the reports we're receiving are very accurate for each yacht's location.
Back in 1983 I did a 21 days trek throught Himalayan mountains it was so cold above 10,000 ft I went 12 days without a wash. Which for me is a lifetime record. Anyway we are not called grottie yachties for nothing.
Did you upset the UA-cam DemiGods, you're not coming up in my feed, even though I have consistently searched your channel for the past few weeks (Don't want to make too much of it, but I'm guessing you are not an 'official' channel)!?
I wanted to say : there’s no mystery why Alex Thomson relinquished this brand new boat so fast, the design may not have been all-rounded enough. Too extreme. And Alan may have been upgraded by his Swiss sponsor, mostly because of his nationality, but he hasn’t enough experience at that level to perform well. But yeah, give that boat to Isabelle and she might win the race.
Yeah Alan said previously that the boat was designed to cut through the waves, which slows the boat too much. he had to spend a good chunk of their budget into rebuilding the bow to give it more volume to ride the waves. I'm not sure anyone would perform better on this boat. You really need a new gen foiler to be at the front. The difference in speed is massive
@@xavierjunod5967 Exactly. When Alex received this yacht years ago knowledge about ocean foiling was and to some extent still is in its infancy. Last edition they were only beginning to realize that 'scow' bows are the way to go. That's for monohulls, though. State-of-the-art foiling multihull conventional thinking maintains wave-piercing inverted bows. No idea if that will change at some point as well, but the Ultims don't seem deterred at all seeing the insane speeds they can sustain.
Grrrr - Too cold, freezing rain, ice pellets. Contrast - bright sunshine, blue sky, dry boots, less layers. Chasing gremlins as the next cape is not too far away for some, less than a week for the top 10.
It appears he will have no choice but to sail on his broken foil all the way to the Cape. It's only a few days off so likely the forecast is fairly accurate at this point. He will have a rough time of it from all appearances unfortunately for him.

No word on the capsize of Boris (before the crossing with Yannick)??? Listen to his audio at the vendée tracker at December 22!

I have a prediction!
Boris comes third and gets a podium!
Bookmark this.
Thanks again Florian.
Could very well happen! He's one of the best offshore sailors in the world.
B O R I S
I hope so, but I think fifth is more realistic.
I think he'll come in 4th.....
4 th was my original prediction but Sabastain has a bad disadvantage with his foil.
That’s what made me change my mind.
Boris is just so cool.

Q and A question generally speaking how long in days will it take for the leaders once they round the horn and head north to arrive at the finish?
What exactly makes Charlie’s IMOCA more suited for upwind as compared to Youan’s IMOCA
Foils, keel, mast placement, sail inventory????

Are there no Australian naval vessels in the area to tow Pip?
That would be most welcome, I am sure.
She mentioned that option in her first post-race video and said the team is not considering it. Editorial comment - at least, maybe not yet.
I think she wants to complete her race as much as she can, some kind of way, by heading to Melbourne on her own. Having some media exposure with her “Kon-Tiki” adventures is not a bad thing too. And it’s more ecological.
Pip doesn’t need rescuing. Naval vessels are expensive to operate and should not get involved unless we are talking life or death situations

What was the music playing with Boris?

❤️💚 Beautiful music'a Mate's 🌎 that's the great Yu ash'ent'm know's 😊
1:40 - and that's midsummer's day. I would not want to be there in winter.
Not a midsummer's day actually; a start of summer day.

How close to Macquarie island do the boats get?
Damian Seguin passed closest so far, about 50nm to the north.

Are there penalties for crossing into the exclusion zone?
Do they wash themselves when it's cold, or just stay dirty until it's warmer or reaches the end? They certainly don't bother shaving
