Congratulations on the video, you did a great job of giving a detailed and accurate overview of the game, in spite of its complexity, in such a short amount of time! And thanks for the appreciation of course. A very minor rule mistake was noticed by one of the designers: in sieges, you do not need to reduce two Elites to continue to attack, just one.
@@3MBGI noticed another one. You say that combat occurs when you move into an opponents space when actually initiating combat is its own action and the battle is fought across the border between the two spaces.
Wow, this one was a beast and I ended up having to snip a little out here and there to get it under time. Game is second edition, but I used my first edition models. This one was picked by Fraser, who is the person I have played WOTR against 20 times. Who do you have long standing game rivalries with?
I'm no longer part of this rivalry because I moved away, but for years I was part of a group that would regularly play the old Mayfair crayon train games - Empire Builder, Eurorails, British Rails, etc. We had a large number of people in our gaming circle and would usually play other things, and some people didn't like the rail games, but whenever we got a group of just the rail players that's what we'd play.
@@3MBG "From the ashes a fire shall be woken. A light from the shadows shall spring. Renewed shall be blade that was broken. The crownless again shall be king." Great review! I'm very new to the board gaming hobby and trying to absorb as much info as possible while making my own, these quick videos are wonderfully efficient!
And might I say Francesco, thank you for this game. It has been in my top 10 fav games for well over a decade and I don't see it leaving any time soon. It really is a high water mark for mixing theme and gameplay and an all time classic in my mind.
I just checked your channel out. Very polished and professional looking. Nicely lit and shot as well. You should do very well as people discover your content. My only thing is what's a quackalope? I'm not sure if the name or brand draws me into the idea of board games. Might help with search-ability long term, but short term it's going to cause some confusion.
@@3MBG Hey! Thank you for stopping by and taking a look :) - I am moving into a new studio space next month so the quality / production should take another step up soon! I think the question of what is a Quackalope is a fair one :) - the decision was made around finding a unknown name / brand that can be defined or grown through some hard work and time - VS jumping on a name that was a little more direct to the topic but did not stand out as much or already had a definition attached to it like "allofline" - I came up with and enjoyed Quackalope a lot - In the south (USA) a Jackalope is a well known mythological creature so it has a bit of a connection there. Overall - I think its fun and I am down for the work it will take to make it recognizable! Your videos are great :) Keep up the work and thank you for the honest feedback!
I figured the quackalope thing would be something like that. I think long term, its not a bad idea having a unique name. And, well, there are many many channels called the "x" meeple, and they can blur for me. So being different isn't a bad thing at all. In a way, a name like that is a long term investment. It will pay off once your brand is out there, it will just take a while to see the benefits. Slickerdrips, for example, does pretty well and that has nothing to do with board games as far as i can tell. As for your content. You are already ahead of 90 percent of people out there in terms of the technical aspects. Another step up would be pretty damned impressive. I just love seeing any content that isn't just a steady cam on a dude at a desk in front of games talking unscripted for 15 mins. Your use of cutaways, and their composition shows a lot of care and thought. Little touches like showing the druid games logo on the board in one video, just show you are thinking about the content and how it will look. I really appreciate that. Having the game in front of you so you can interact with it during the talking segments is good as well, as it gives you something to do with your hands. Plus, in my mind at least, the game should always be the real star of the video. Like an interview show, but your interviewing the game :) Multiple camera angles as well. The top down one in particular is sharp. I'm gonna go find you on twitter now :)
@@3MBG Thank you XD I have worked in Film / Photography for 7 years now but I figured it was about time to combine some hobbies and knowledge into a channel - I have a lot learn however and even across the past 2 months my content has improved in quality a lot. I am still gettin used to being infront of the camera and watching channels like yours makes me realize I have a good bit of work to do when it comes to explaining or presenting a complex game. You hit that perfect balance in your videos! I like the way you described "Interviewing the game" thats 100% the goal at the end of the day. I want to share and be a part of the conversation around this hobby I adore. XD - I really appreciate you taking the time to look through my videos - I am in it for the long run :P and having a blast building the channel.
I love the theme in Rebellion but I had to sell it in favor of keeping War of the Ring. I think it suffers from that fiddly planning phase, and the needlessly complicated combat system (by comparison). They were trying to make it stand out, I get it. But WotR plays much smoother and it's mechanically immensely more enjoyable. No need to peek under the mission cards, or to constantly look over your hand of probe cards. In fact I'm amazed that FFG didn't include a stack of marking sheets for the Empire player. Weren't they bothered during playtesting? Ah, FFG just isn't what they used to be. But at least TI4 plays better than the previous edition. I'm grateful for that.
This works best with 2 players. In a 4 player game, yes you have 2 people on the each side but only one wins in the end. I adore this game, but with 4 players it's dumb.
I really don't understand the hair icons representing difficulty, it just seems confusing, I mean it's all subject to interpretation, can't any hairstyle be difficult? What if you used length of hair instead, like short hair being easy, long hair meaning difficult and so forth, it's just more cohesive that way. Or maybe brain looking icons of varying size.
Next time we do them it will likely be something completely different, like geometric shapes. It's really just something to occupy the screen as i talk for 2 seconds anyway.
After 6 games, only one took 5+ h (and both sides ran out of cards during the last 2 turns). The remaining ones took 2,5 - 3 h and most of them were head to head till the very end.
Everyone may prefer games to their liking. In WotR every single unit and decission matters and may impact the final outcome. Rebellion for me is simply not that engaging emotionally, as you pop out your heroes on the map. I'm not a fan of either of the universe (Tolkien or Star Wars), however, after playing WotR i did buy the Lord of the Rings book and read it with great satisfaction (which now makes me like the game even more), while rebellion did not spark anything similar after playing...

Lol. I have officially been playing that rule wrong for 14 years.
added a pop up correction, but sadly, those don't show on mobile at the moment.

Really surprised this didn't earn a GM game. I know you have some memorable moments in it. It isn't highly accessible but it is a masterpiece.
Ah, this was before i did the GMs, I did a video retroactively award the medal to 34 games. ua-cam.com/video/e6iCjZzyBz8/v-deo.html

Neat, I have not played any of those. Train games are like this huge hole in my gaming experience.
Great video as always. I can see the amount of time taken to write, film and edit these.
I hope you can't literally see that. Half the time i'm not even wearing pants, especially during summer ;)
Great explanation!
Another solid 3 minutes.
Nicely done, thank you.

Is "it glitters because it's gold" a reference to "All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost" poem?
Absolutely :)

Fantastic job! Hard to squeeze all that in 3 mins! Small errata: to continue a siege you just downgrade 1 Elite to regular (not 2).
Yeah, somehow, we have been playing that wrong forever. Funny how you can overlook a rule like that for so damned long as we started playing in 2005

Love the new complexity icons.
Cheers. I think we are going to change them every year to something different, just for fun :)
Great vid, great channel. I Would love to see a 3min vid on Hunt For The Ring. Fingers crossed
Unlikely in the near future as I don't have access to a copy. But i showed this vid to Ares games, so fingers crossed.
Not red vs blue minis? Did you you paint yours? Where did you get those.
Yep, handpainted them over a period of months. More info here on my old blog vom-krieg.blogspot.com/search/label/War%20of%20the%20Ring
My favorite game
Been invited to play this next weekend.
AWESOME! I hope you have a good time with it
It was definitely interesting. Not sure if I like it yet. Will have to play it more often to decide that.
@@keithedwards649 A lot to learn on a first play.
Yep and I did actually enjoy it, even though I lost badly.
planning to buy this game. Is it worth for 4 players. Will we be able to finish it in 3 hours or is ot for the whole f day?
4 players is not a great experience. 3 hours is doable, but probably not with 4 and not your first time
Did you paint these figures? Or do they come like this?
I painted them. The collectors edition came with painted figures but that thing is super expensive.

I wish it was in stock. Whens the next print run?
No idea. I was unaware it was out of stock. It's such a classic that I can't imagine it will stay that way for long.
It's back in stock right now, and shipping to distributors in these days.
Cheers for this comment. I had no idea what the answer was.

How do you feel about the expansions? Would you say they are worth including? Incredible video by the way- so concise for such a big game!!
I only have experience with the 1st edition expansion, and its..... annoying. The stuff for the main board is great, the side games suck
BEWARE: the miniatures are NOT pre-painted.
Ah, yeah, i painted those. I thought i'd put up a disclaimer somewhere.
It's a easy comparison to star wars rebellion, there are many similarities between them, and both are excellent.
