Thanks for this! Can you clarify if you're using an SSD type external hard drive? Also, I am using FCP and started working with some videos stored on a hard disk drive (not SSD) and now it won't let me unplug the drive, because FCP is using it. Do I need to close FCP or what? Any help very much appreciated, cheers!
Hi! Yes, I’m using an SSD type external hard drive (a LaCie model). Regarding your issue with FCP, you would need to close FCP first before safely unplugging the hard disk drive. This will ensure that any ongoing processes are stopped and the drive can be safely ejected. Hope that helps!
Hey quick question what format is your external? Everyone is saying that APFS is the best format. Mine is currently Exfat, so I’m painstakingly offloading everything so I can reformat it, not sure if this is necessary or not
If you’re using the external drive only with a Mac, APFS is the way to go-it’s super fast and works great with Final Cut Pro. But if you’re switching between Mac and Windows, stick with exFAT since it works on both. I use a LaCie drive formatted to APFS for my Mac, and it’s been perfect!
Does this mean that the video you are editing will automatically save onto the Hard Drive as you go? I roughly cut a video and my Final cut pro is starting to lag on my Macbook. There’s still plenty of storage on my computer and Hard drive. Is there anything I can do to clear space on Final cut pro?
It still will! FCP just may not work after your trial runs out and your files won’t be accessible until you buy FCP, but your files will still be saved on your external until then!😜
just here to say this video saved me LOL thank you so much!! clear informative and quick

Thanks for watching!!🎬🎬🎬
All my media is on my Mac HD to make reusing files easier. If I set up as you suggest will I now have duplicates on my external drives?
Yes you’ll just have 2 copies …or you can just move it entirely to the external and save space on your computer!
@@EllevonEditing thanks!
Thank you❤️

Hello Elle- THANK YOU for the explanation!! I don’t know why, but external disks make me nervous! Great channel 🙏🙏🙏

Yes! If you store the library file on an external hard drive, it automatically saves your edit as you go on the hard drive!
@@EllevonEditing Perfect! Thank you!
Not sure if Final Cut Pro will give me permission to save to my lacie HD because I am on FCPro trial.

Welcome!🎬
how much space does the external hard drive need to have?
It depends! I would suggest at least a terabyte (which is 1000 GB) and up to like 5TB (what I use!) 🤍
@@EllevonEditing okay, thank you so much for your help !!
