    Been using this case for a few years now with the padded side panel instead of window. I used 3x noctua 120mm intake fans for the front and this has been very cool and reliable. I would like to commend fractal on the case's ability to reject dust, particularly the closed panel (moduventTM) on the top, and the effective filters. It's well-built, understated, quiet, and fulfills the desire of 'invisible computer box'.

      Loved the case! I agree with your comments about how clean this case kept itself. The filters really do work well. But had to switch it out recently its a bit too small now with some of the newer bigger GPUs on the market.

    I'm very happy with mine - I wanted the shallowest, quietest ATX case I could find, and this one ticked all my boxes.
    Excellent fan support and cable management, very well designed.

    Hey Steve, I think it would be a good idea to not only test thermals in its stock fan configs, but also if you max them out with aftermarket fans as well (with noise temps included). I know this is a lot more work, but I think a lot of case buyers going into their purchase expecting to add/upgrade fans for better thermals/quieter fans and such. Which fans to choose I have no idea, but I would keep those fans the same for all case reviews to remove at least one variable. Thanks for the review.

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  7 років тому +35

      Thanks for the thoughts! We're updating our case testing methodology, so now's a good time to post stuff like this.

      Gamers Nexus just piggy backing off this, when doing temperature and thermals it looks like some cases have 140s vs 120s included and different amount of fans included. would be cool to have a standard setup to test thermals and sound as apples to apples.

    problem with mounting 2x140 on top is the EPS power cable that plugs in the top-left of my every motherboard that had it so far. So technically, most mid tower cases cant fit 2x140mm as they claim. EPS cable gets in the way.

  • @Trottelheimer
    @Trottelheimer 3 роки тому +1

    I put 3 Arctic PWM fans in the front and 1 in the back. With that setup, this case is very silent AND very cool. The single front intake fan should be taken as no more than a starting point.

  • @moileung

    no RGB? yes finally!!! a simple case without the RGB gimmicky shenanigan!!! i was considering either nzxt s340 elite or that panteks 400s but man, this case a amazinly simple good but kinda bland in design though. Canadian $130 for the windowless case, $140 for the glass window...hmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

    • @NegerKim
      @NegerKim 7 років тому

      I'm going with the Phanteks P400S Tempered instead of the usual Fractal (have had Define R3 and R4) and being that I go to LAN's, the Fractal cases are just TOO heavy and very hard to handle.

    • @DMN3901
      @DMN3901 7 років тому

      I have the windowed. I'm expecting tempered glass to be a thing in the near future, according to fractal's posts on reddit.
      Great case to build in, especially for air cooling. Temps are 5-10 degrees cooler than the cm690 v1 I had before.
      The windowed version is $130ish on mikes right now. Wait for a sale and you should see around $115 (what I paid for mine).
      Just a word of warning (probably the same for the 400c/460x)- if you do not have a modular PSU like myself, have fun with tying up cables behind the PSU. I barely got them all stuffed back there. That said, PSU still working fine...not going to spend more for something I can't see.

  • @terp02Andrew
    @terp02Andrew 7 років тому +1

    After seeing both GN and HWC's review of the Fractal C, I do worry a bit on thermals in future Fractal cases.
    The reason I'm still on my R5 is because of the bottom intake - which aims directly at the intake of my GPU cooler.
    I do hope they make considerations for air-oriented cooling in the next revision of the Define C (or S) - whichever is refreshed first.
    (I have 2-3 HDDs at a time, and I wasn't a fan of the HDD-mounting in the Define S).

  • @krzych3114
    @krzych3114 7 років тому +2

    I have Define R5 without window and it is great. Good quality, a lot of space and cooling options. Bottom and side intake improves temperatures in SLI by 10+ C. Not much more to wish from a case really, pure functionality and performance, while looking classy without some "gaming" nonsense.

    I'm sure that for the light overclocking this case is absolutely perfect even under min RPM. remember 15 years ago when cases used to have one cheap 92 mm fan on the back? hardware was still doing fine. Low temps are good but don't get caught on that marketing BS. 5 degrees cooler - who gives a fuck. Unless you're hitting 90 C under 100% continuous load you shouldn't be worried.

    I built my new PC in this case (Full tempered glass version), along with my wife's. In mine, I put Noctua 140mm fans on the top and front, and this definitely helps airflow while keep fan noise down. My biggest disappointment was HDD sound dampening. My Toshiba X300 is very audble in this case, more so than it was in my old Antec 900, which surprised me. When the HDD is asleep, I can only hear a tiny bit of airflow noise, and that's it.
    There's not much I'd change about this case, as it does exactly what I want it to do. If I'm being picky, I'd prefer to the front piece to bet metal instead of plastic, and the Power LED able to be something other than blue.

    • @soldierforchrist631

    No mention of the p400? Personally, I see that as a direct competitor to this case; $70-100, Mid Tower, and a ton of options between variants.

    • @justinbernardo3159
      @justinbernardo3159 7 років тому +4

      The P400 is much flashier and leans slightly toward the gamer-y side of the market with RGB LEDs and a more lively design. The Define C leans very hard away from that side of the market.
      You're right in that in terms of objective functionality they're very similar. But their subjective qualities and demographics lie on opposite ends of the spectrum; when I think of an "ideal" Define C customer they're very different from the "ideal" P400 customer.

    You are the first reviewer I have seen to say that the doors swivel out! I have to say that just sealed the deal on my next case purchase. I don't know how, but my back panel on my define S will Not fully slide into place anymore on the top rear (damaged alignment pin I think). Thank freaking goodness they got rid of that because I can't tell you how angry I got one night when I couldn't close up the back of my case!

    • @GamersNexus

      For clarity: A hinge as in the front hinges on tabs (as opposed to tabs lining the top and bottom of the panel). It's not a hinge like Corsair's 400C hinge (which would be nice).

    • @classicrockonly

    I wish case makers would do a full sized ATX case that focused on striking a really good balance between noise levels and cooling (get the most cooling for the least amount of noise) without any concern for aesthetics. For me, I don't care how the case looks, as long as I can load it with multiple hard drives, a large video card, and a 280mm radiator, and dampen the noise as much as possible without ruining the cooling performance.

  • @icitrom

    Anyone interested in this case, also look at the Thermaltake Suppressor F31 and its bigger brother the F51. Both come in a windowed or non-windowed version. I just picked up the F31. I was looking for dust filters on ALL openings (front, top, PSU, bottom), while many cases come with only some vents covered by a dust filter. I also wanted a quiet case, and the F31 comes with sound padding on both sides and the top. Moreover, the top comes in 3 parts, so you don't have to totally sacrifice sound absorption if you're mounting just one top fan, for example. Anyway, the Suppressor hit all the points I was looking for, except that the 4 front-panel USB ports are 2x 2.0 + 2x 3.1 gen 1 (5 Gbps)--no 10 Gbps 3.1 gen 2.

    Steve, would you happen to know the difference between the Define C and the Define S that came before it?

    • @hyungwoo0312
      @hyungwoo0312 7 років тому

      Tyler Younghaus Just in case you don't quite know the difference yet, the Define S is a bigger case outright compared to the Define C. Taller and longer so it fits radiators in the front and top with ample clearance. Also it lacks a PSU shroud, but it supports a 120mm radiator or a 120mm/140mm fan at the bottom. As for fans, it comes shipped with 2 140mm GP-14 Dynamic fans.

    If i put my h100i pro with the i9 and the rtx2080 ti ( no oc) should it manage higher temperatures?

    • @Alien8ed96
      @Alien8ed96 5 років тому

      Sebastian Sebastian use a meshify C if you’re worried about thermals. They are functionnally the same, however they don’t look exactly the same and meshify is cooler. Compare the 2 vids’ thermals and you should have a good idea what you should use (however the define most likely won’t be a problem if you’re not OCing).

    Great review! The depth of the case is my only gripe. I have the Mini C version but the depth is the same as the regular Define C. If you have a 3-Fan GPU like an ASUS Strix, you won't be able to fit a 240/280/360 radiator up front. Only option will be to fit a 240/280 on top. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the case. Huge improvement over their original Define Mini (non-C) that I had before.

    Thanks for the informative video and I am interested in buying this case but I have one concern: I have a high performance 7200 RPM WD 3.5 hard drive and if I stick it in the bottom of this case in the enclosed area next to PSU, would it overheat? Any suggestions on how to cool it in this scenario? Thank you!

    My biggest disappointment as a windowless Define Mini C owner is the lack of a third 3.5" drive bay: no RAID 5.
