I have known Tu personally for several years now, and we have ridden together some. I knew he had a "parts business" but didn't know just how good and complete it was until he took me over to his place last week after a ride. I am impressed! This video is enough to make me want a KLR. I don't (I ride an R1200rt) but if I did, I guarandangtee you who I would go to for parts and advice. He's the man!
Love the no nonsense looks, simplicity & ruggedness of the KLR. So frustrating we can't buy new KLR's (or DR's) in Europe anymore due to pesky EEC emissions regs. Especially when trucks & busses push out more pollution in a day, than a bike would in a year : (
@Alex Atreides There's definitely a big potential market for KLR's & DR's in Europe, and has been for years. The problem is it costs to much to modify big singles to comply with Euro 5 emissions regs. Big singles from KTM & Husqvarna have these mods, but cost as much as multi cylinder adventure bikes as a result.
@Alex Atreides Of course they can transfer existing tech if they wanted - they just can't do it & keep the bike at a competitive price point. If emissions are not the issue for singles of 650 & above, explain how none of the big four Japanese manufacturers are selling them in Europe any more ? Given the choice of an expensive, gizmo laden, lard ass, big twin, or a simpler, cheaper, lighter, single cylinder adventure bike, i know which one i'd choose - and there's a lot of other riders who feel the same way.
@Alex Atreides WRONG - there's a massive market here that (apart from Ktm/Husqvarna) only has the choice of buying large capacity twins, or small adventure bikes with 300/400cc popgun engines. And your management oracle reckons there'd be no interest in KLR's - what planet is he on : )
@Alex Atreides So there's no interest in the whole of Europe, not only for great bikes like the KLR, but DR's, XR's and XT's too, and it's nothing to do with emissions - don't believe it sorry. Kawasaki for some reason might have decided they couldn't sell enough KLR's to make it worthwhile importing them, fair enough - but not rest of the big four as well.
One big thing I learned from this video is the high beam flash button on the left handle bar. Glad I learned that from you because I didn't realize it was there. I've had my 22 KLR, same model, for less than a week. This was a good video and possibly a life saver.
Good to see a ‘22 in the wild ridden by a real person. Had a Gen 1 (‘05) and now ride a Gen 2 (‘17). Gen 3 intrigues me as I like ABS. Thanks for the video and the walkaround.

Great, in-depth review of the KLR! I am very excited about owning the Adventure model. Thank you very much for spending time addressing many aspects of the bike, including the weight, as that seems to be one of the most often mentioned "issues" with the KLR. I could definitely see weight being an issue on technical trails, climbing over boulders, and such, but that's not what the KLR is designed for. I expect many will appreciate the weight when flying down interstates at 80 mph heading to the next adventure. I loved your line about, "Well, I'll just make a trail. After all, I am on a KLR." 😂 QUESTION: One of the larger cycle magazines stated in their review that they felt that the shifter and foot peg were not properly spaced and did not allow for insertion of a motocross-sized-boot-toe to fit under the shifter. You didn't seem to have any issues at all with shifting, and I am wondering what your opinion is of their opinion regarding the shifter. I'm assuming you weren't wearing sneakers on your trail rides! Thank you again for a great review that has really encouraged me to go ahead and order a KLR Adventure.
Thanks for the feedback! The peg and shifter spacing/layout on this one is pretty much the same as previous generations which has never been motocross boot friendly. A longer shift adjusted higher has always been the most popular bandaid but peg lowering brackets from JNS are the thing that really makes it right. They're working on them for the 2022 now and I'll be testing prototypes soon. In this video I was wearing Gearne Balance boots which are very slim, low profile boots and it's like wearing sneakers. When I wear my lace up work boots that have a thicker sole it leaves a lot to be desired. I'll just live with it until the best upgrade option is available.
I have been working on getting one of these bikes for about 6 weeks now. I am in East Texas, and we shall see what happens, but with any luck I will be riding one home tomorrow afternoon, they got it in the create and suppose to be putting it to gather for me. Looking forward to making some fun adv videos with this bike. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the bike with us. I think it will make the perfect little bike, great for mini adventures, plus a great commuter back and forth to work especially now that the fuel cost keeps rising to all time highs. Sense you mentioned it in towards the end of the video, I have already got some new tires on order to replace the stock tires with, Motz, Tractionator GPS, I have ran them on several bikes, if you have not checked them out, I think they are one of the best all around tires for a bike like this. Keep up the fun videos, you have a new sub here. Dale

Still trying to wear out my 06. Only has 150K miles on it so far. It's far from stock, so I don't see me throwing $8K at a new one since they didn't add that 6th gear. $8K is a lot just to add fuel injection and ABS. Mine doesn't even look like a 1st gen bike anymore. Glad they came back with them though. MAybe in another 6-10 years I'll have this one worn out enough to warrant buying a 3RD Gen.

Did I hear you right: “the counterbalancer is the same part number”? Is that the infamous ‘doohickey’? Did Kawasaki not bother to fix this in the redesign?
That's right. They didn't change it. But the fix is easy and inexpensive so I believe it's still a great bike at the price point considering the improvements in other areas.
For tires try the Dunlop TrailMax Mission, have them on my KTM have a set ordered for my DR650 and if I add the KLR650 they well be going on it. The best true 50/50 I have ever had by far and they last a long time. They are great on Paved, Dirt, and Gravel, and even good on wet grass. What is the gas millage like and how far can you get on a tank of gas.
Yeah I stock Trailmax Missions but have not had an opportunity to run them personally. They're high on my list to try. I like that they're Made in the USA 🇺🇸. I have not had a chance to check actual mileage yet.
Thanks for the video , Thoroughly enjoyed it. One question , When the spotlights are they wired to switch off using the low beam switch of the main headlight ?
Inseam and weight are what matter most. I have a 30" inseam and weigh 265 so my weight drops it down where I can easily flat foor it. Once the suspension is upgraded for me I should be able to firmly plant the ball of both feet which is what I want. I have Kawasaki Low Seats in stock already that lower the seat height 1 3/8" and I'll also have 1" lowering links in a couple of weeks.
@@markcollins5026 It may be higher than the 2008-2014 but if so just enough to compensate for the extra weight. It feels like stock 08 suspension to me. It is hard to tell though because none of the klr's I ride regularly have stock suspension and I'm a big guy.
@@markcollins5026 I haven't done any measuring yet but I believe the tank and plastics are lower which would explain why it doesn't feel heavier at all. It is pretty nimble. I think they did really well in that area.
It's not a huge deal, but I would rather have one. I don't ride by the tach but it's nice to know what rpm I'm running at a certain speed, etc. I'm putting the finishing touches on the Tach kits now, they should be available next week!
I’m a big guy looking for a bike that is fast enough to pass on the highway but can handle dirt roads well. Mostly be riding through Mexico with a surfboard and limited gear! My biggest concern is top end speed for passing on open roads. My off road would be mostly dirt and gravel roads! Your input would be much appreciated!
I'm a big guy and I've never had an issue passing on the open road on my KLR's. I would be more concerned with suspension. You'll need to upgrade so the bike will handle the extra weigh well.
I am in the market for a second bike...live where there are tons of fire roads and trails, so this would be perfect as a second bike to my Gold Wing, but I have to ask...at 5' 9" with a 30" inseam, is this too tall for me you think? Thanks!

You don't have to but if you want the peace of mind that the spring isn't broken so that you can frequently adjust the system as needed then the Eagle parts will need to be installed.
@@3dcycleparts does that mean the Kawa have finally updated the doohickey and made a decent standard part? I’m a gen 1 owner btw…..and a Triumph T140E.
@@BLUESBOYBENFIELD no, the parts are the same as the 2018. I say it's not required because it isn't necessary, there are a lot of bikes running without the updated parts but I would do it because I don't like to run troublesome parts. The Gen 2 Levers don't break so the biggest problem is the spring. They both should be changed though.
@@3dcycleparts The doohickey replacement was born out of a select few ruin-it-yourselfers incorrectly torquing the hold down bolt. In doing so they distorted the doohickey resulting in a failure. This in turn resulted in a cottage industry being born and the resulting cult like beliefs. Logically if it were as big a problem as far too many believe Kawasaki would have issued a recall. The only thing i falt on my bike is the low ground clearence, but with an easy fix i Will rise her about 2mm. Already made her 10kg lighter,so she is no longer a fat chick. Eh he

How many top/bottom end rebuilds has it been through?
Did you do the doohickey mod?
Im just getting my 2018 the way i want it and now i might need to trade it in for a new one..Maybe once they come out with more colors..
I really wish they would do a retro throwback color scheme. White, green, blue. Or anything really cool with Kawasaki Green.
Q.. Your buddy's helmet has a bluethooth mic and comm system.. Can you tell me what brand, model it is?
That's the Sena 50S we sell on our site. They're great!
www.3dcycleparts.com/SENA-50S-HD-Bluetooth-Communication-System-w-Harmon-Kardon-Single-p349617544
Glad to see that these are getting out in the wild! Thanks for the video.
The press seems to indicate the ABS cannot be turned off. Is that the case? I'm not much interested in ABS but I really wouldn't want it if you cannot turn it off.
That's what I've seen too. We won't know for sure until the ABS bikes arrive but it appears that info is correct.
The base model comes without ABS, so you could get that model.
@@ronpfeifer278 I'm trying to behave and pay down other bills before adding a 4th MC to the garage! :D
@@3dcycleparts so far have just over 5,000 on mine and they still look like new may be 10 % wore.
Thanks for the video , Thoroughly enjoyed it. One question , When the spotlights are they wired to switch off using the low beam switch of the main headlight ?
Thanks! No, they only operate via the dash switch.
When in doubt “throttle out” great review
I have a 2015 and it gets really hot after a while if you’re not going at certain speed. Do you feel the same with this new one?
Did they fix the doohickey??? Or am I going to fix it myself???
It has not changed so it will need to be addressed at some point. All the current doohickey parts fit the 2022. We've already installed them.
What is the diameter of the GPS mount cross bar above the instruments? Could you measure it with a caliper? Thanks!
What's with the rear brake hose? It's routed poorly
Awesome vid man!
Thanks!
Are the rear pegs also rubber mounted? I'm very happy with the turn signal stalk eliminators.
The foot pegs themselves are rubber covered just like typical KLR foot pegs but they are not rubber isolated from the frame like the fronts.
Sure looks like you're riding along the Mississippi? I've been thinking hard on one of these new KLR's.
Nice vid thanks. Question; ride height, im not sure how tall you are im 5'9" can you comfortably put your feet down?
Inseam and weight are what matter most. I have a 30" inseam and weigh 265 so my weight drops it down where I can easily flat foor it. Once the suspension is upgraded for me I should be able to firmly plant the ball of both feet which is what I want. I have Kawasaki Low Seats in stock already that lower the seat height 1 3/8" and I'll also have 1" lowering links in a couple of weeks.
Beautiful bike, they don’t sell it in Europe 😟,I had the Suzuki freewind 650 for years
Great job Tu!
Thanks!
Is the rear shock spring compression feel the same or did they change anything with that for load? Still adjustable?
It's pretty soft. I think the spring rate is the same as 2008-2014.
Man, I seen where they bumped the spring rate up, I picked up my new KLR two day's ago, I think it's really smooth on the road, I like it !
@@markcollins5026 It may be higher than the 2008-2014 but if so just enough to compensate for the extra weight. It feels like stock 08 suspension to me. I would have liked to have seen spring rates closer to the 2014.5-2018. At first I thought it was but the more I ride it it's just not. It is hard to tell though because none of the klr's I ride regularly have stock suspension and I'm a big guy.
@@3dcycleparts man, I got the base model sand color no abs, this one weighs 456 with six gallons of fuel !
@@markcollins5026 I haven't done any measuring yet but I believe the tank and plastics are lower which would explain why it doesn't feel heavier at all. It is pretty nimble. I think they did really well in that area.
Nice adventure bike sir this never come here in my country philippines..
Thanks for the video. How do you feel about not having a tach? That would be a great item for you to design and sell!
It's not a huge deal, but I would rather have one. I don't ride by the tach but it's nice to know what rpm I'm running at a certain speed, etc. I'm putting the finishing touches on the Tach kits now, they should be available next week!
@@3dcycleparts Great! That will be a huge seller!!
@@3dcycleparts ...I want a tach...I'll watch what you add...
To buy or not to buy that is the question haha, not sure if its enough to get me off my 2nd Gen.
3D Cycle Parts KLR it is then!
I am in the market for a second bike...live where there are tons of fire roads and trails, so this would be perfect as a second bike to my Gold Wing, but I have to ask...at 5' 9" with a 30" inseam, is this too tall for me you think? Thanks!
I only have a 31" inseam and it's good for me. We do have lower seats for them as well.
@@3dcycleparts I went by my dealer and they had the adventure model with the sidecases and the fog lights...ohhhh, yeah, felt fine to me. good looking bike! Thanks for the reply. Subbed!

Just don’t know if I want the KLR or the versus is there enough power or should I go with the 1000?
enough power is subjective. you should try to ride one and see. The klr to me has enough power to cruze around town and up and down trails with no problem but its not a rocket by any means.
Yep. It just depends on what you're trying to do.
How are you able to sell Kawasaki OEM parts?
Did Kawasaki change the gearing on the new KLR? I noticed it doesn't have a tach
Gearing is the same. No tach, but we have a tach kit that'll be available in a couple of days.
@@3dcycleparts Thanks, I wonder if Kawasaki will offer a tach? They had one for the Vulcan 900 not to long ago, but it was discontinued. I guess we will see.

You sound like you know all about it!
The only thing I clean is the chain.

Hi What is the fuel mileage per tank?
The rear subframe has always been a weak point. Is it better?
It was only a problem on the Gen 1. The Gen 3 has an integrated subframe so bolts won't be a problem. It looks to be pretty strong.
I crushed my 2015 rear subframe. Is the rack rated any better?
Do you have do change the doohickey for an Eagle Mike part?
You know lawyers, lawsuits and government intrusion etc. As a trained Kawasaki tech I have seen a bunch without the doohickey going strong! Is there room for improvement on the part sure, is it necessary no especially if you know how to wrench. Great review.
@@bluezhawg2104 you are making claims you can't back up with data. The issue has been documented over and over. I have taken so many Gen 1's apart with broken factory levers that I quit I finally quit collecting them. Many others have done the same. Give me a call sometime if you wanna talk about it and I'll be glad to shed some light.
I was hoping they would find an extra 20hp with fuel injection. I honestly don't see anything to want to trade my 2015 for. Except maybe a T7 or AT.
What size are the bags, cost?
I’m wanting to get into adventure biking in the near future. I’ve had my eye on this bike. Anyone with more experience have recs other than the klr?
T-7 for me, been riding for 50+ years and I shopped for 3 years and couldn’t find anything better.
Depends on your style. KLR is ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’. Good on curvy paved roads and light jeep roads. Not great on long stretches of freeway or singletrack trails.
How do you access the air filter?
It's pretty much identical to previous years. Uses the same filter, cage, and bolt.
@@3dcycleparts Is the air intake still on the side where all the dirt flys up and into the box?
Good Stuff 😃
Was this filmed in Jackson, Ms?
Yep!
I like the Adventure model except the color. I wish it came in the colors of the other models
Cool
Thanks!
there's nothing wrong with this video, guys, but just so you know that this is a commercial and not a review. this guy is a salseman, and I wish he wouldn't put the word review in the title of this video because it's not.
How does the swing arm adjustment work?
It's just like the Gen 1. Simple pull style adjustment with double nuts.
@@3dcycleparts Gen2 was a better system. IMHO.🙂
@@nose2wind872 there are pros and cons of both. You can take the wheel off of the Gen 2 without messing with adjustment but adjusting them is not as easy and the threads in the swingarm have given problems because of corrosion for some people. I personally wish they had the cam adjusters like the XR650L but hey...
...what's that grab rail looking bar behind the windscreen?
It's part of the wind screen mount. It's a good place to put a RAM ball and mount a GPS! That's what I'm gonna use it for.

No.
