Driver’s Eye View - Höllental Electric Railway (Austria) - Payerbach to Reichenau an der Rax

- The narrow gauge (760 mm) Höllental Railway situated in Lower Austria starts from the (ÖBB) Semmering Railway station of “Payerbach Reichenau” running for approximately 5 kilometres to “Hirschwang” via the attractive market town of “Reichenau an der Rax”. Trains operate from a 550 volt overhead power supply.
Opened in 1918 to serve a paper mill, passenger and general goods traffic commenced in 1926. Local commuter traffic was augmented by tourists visiting the Rax Cable Car, also opened in 1926. In the early 60’s the line required substantial investment, leading to post office buses replacing trains in 1963 with goods traffic to the Hirschwang paper mill ceasing in 1982.
In 1979 the Austrian Society for Local Railways (ÖGLB) began operating passenger trains for tourists on summer weekends. As the only operator after 1982, ÖGLB assumed responsibly for maintaining the railway, although Payerbach Hirschwang GmbH, is still the legal owner of the line.
The tour was organised by the Railway Touring Company - Track gauge 760 mm (2 ft 5 15⁄16 in) - Filmed 26th September 2019
Beautiful, simple, calm, gentle and natural. It is a way of life that is very livable in the countryside. It is liberated from chaos. Confused in the big city. Thank you for presenting to see ...
Hi, I am pleased you enjoyed the ride, the pace of life is relaxing, plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful countryside.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I live in Thailand. But I love and admire the countryside in many European countries. Because nature is diverse and beautiful. You guys can keep all these things quite well ..
@@sompochbunnag33 Hi, I have not visited Thailand yet, although I travelled around Malaysia. The world is full of beautiful places, I'm lucky to have visited some of them. Austria is a pretty country, the people living there keep it nice. It is the old buildings I love. I live in England, there are castles and cathedrals near my home, some almost 1000 years old. Tim.

I love journeys through towns and countryside by, trains, trams, buses and cars or trucks! I'm elderly, disabled, can't walk now and it's very difficult to go anywhere, so these videos with beautiful scenery and places I'll never have the chance to go to are an escape for me. Thank you so much for providing us with these fantastic videos! One thing that struck me as odd is that, although there are a number of small roads or entrances crossing the tracks, not only are there no barriers to road traffic when the train is approaching, the train does slow down a bit, but it doesn't blow a whistle or hiorn, which is normally done on the big lines everywhere for additional warning (and still doesn't stop accidents happening, with vehicles being hit by trains- there are a lot of idiots in the world.). Maybe that's not required with small gauge? I look forward to many more lovely journeys through my computer screen!
Hi, it's my pleasure to have your virtual company on my adventures, I'm no spring chicken anymore so I'm determined to make the most of being able to travel while I'm still able to. The use of the horn varies from country to country, in the USA and India the horn is in constant use where as in New Zealand and Austria it is used far less. Austrian motorists are used to sharing the road with trams and trains so I guess they keep an eye out for them in much the same way as they do for other motorists. I'm glad you are making good use of UA-cam to travel virtually all over the world and I'm pleased you enjoyed this video. Best wishes. Tim.
Wow. I haven't been to Austria since I was a child, must visit again... Easily the most beautiful place I've ever been.

What an absolute gem !!
Unknowingly, I went past this just last month... twice as I did Vienna Hbf => Graz and then the return journey the following day.
I now know where Payerbach is as I saw that the train I was on was navigating a massive loop.
I was sitting on the other side of the train to see this line from the window.
Hi, the ride from Vienna to Graz aboard a Railjet train is a very pleasant experience with great views along the way, although I miss the days of opening windows to take photos, I'm sure the rest of the passengers appreciate the air-conditioned luxury of a modern train. If the opportunity crops up, this railway is well worth a visit.
I Love this country. From Indonesia
What a beautiful country (at least what this train went through)! I could watch this all day and not get tired. Only wish my years and income allowed me to see the real thing!
Hello Mike, much of Austria is beautiful, the kind of scenery that features on picture postcards. I love to watch UA-cam travel videos posted by people who have visited amazing places, many of which never featured on regular TV.
Thank you for sharing this video it is a breath taking scenery. And the sound of the electric motors accompanied with the old tracks is so relaxing! Keep up this good work, and i might visit Austria one day myself.
Hi, I really enjoyed visiting this railway, it is set in a beautiful valley and the tram/train perfectly captured the atmosphere of a time when life moved at an altogether slower pace. If you visit Austria I'm sure you'll find it a rewarding experience.
It's wonderful to see service being provided to remote communities like this. Norway has trains that service areas high up in the mountains. Great to see.
Railways are a bit like the artery's of the nation, they preform a vital function that cannot always be measured in financial terms, sometimes the social function is more important, I think Norway gets the balance right.
Thanks for this Tim. Austria is a beautiful country.
I am building a fictional narrow gauge line (009) and I want to include electric traction. This line has given me a lot of inspiration about how to tackle the electrification.
The general atmosphere of the line is like that of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. The W & L has several items of Austrian stock from the Zillertal Bahn. Currently the W & L are hiring a loco from the ZB. Your tram/power car has vacuum brakes, as does the ZB. There are many similarities with the W & L when I volunteered there many years ago.
Thanks
James
Hi, I have been working on my model railway for 35 years now, I'm not sure it will ever be finished, it is something I work on in the depths of winter, rather than summer. Your choice of a fictional narrow gauge railway gives you plenty of freedom to choose rolling stock from around the world, especially now that some models are available in ready to run form. It is a great hobby. The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway is a place I call in to see on my way between the South Coast to North Wales. I must allow myself a day or two there next time I pass to shoot a video and enjoy time riding the trains, it is more 15 years since I last rode a W&L train.
I can only say that in my opinion, this is a Jewel of a Line , including the rolling stock . Thanks Tim, well discovered 😊😊,p.s. and for sharing with us.
I love discovering railways I know little about and I agree this is a rarely featured jewel. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊.
The traction motor sound and the countryside..very enjoyable....great work..

Tim, that was a very tranquil, almost hypnotic journey. Well done to those who arranged the preservation of this delightful railway & those who supported this special journey. But most of all, thank you for recording and sharing this video, glimpses and compilation of photographs. It was a privilege to see and share the experience. Peter
Hi Peter, I'm pleased you enjoyed it and like you I agree that we owe a big thank you to all those involved in keeping this wonderful piece of history alive for us all to enjoy. Cheers. Tim.
I really enjoy seeing your tranquil videos. I can't go anywhere because of poor health, but you make it happen for me. Thank You.
Hi, it's shame health prevents you from visiting some of these places, it means a lot to me, that you enjoy virtual travelling with UA-cam. I can't to get to all the places I would like to, but someone, somewhere posts a video that allows me to enjoy the sights and sounds almost as if I was there in a way television never quite manages. Take care. Tim
Hello Tim! A tip from me. If you have to go on a cure, go here. Here you will find peace and relaxation. This is one of the most beautiful areas in Lower Austria. The old direct current electric motors of the tram railway still have a really nostalgic sound. I hope you enjoyed it in Austria. Greetings from Hans from the Mühlviertel.☺
Hello Hans, it is a very relaxing location, we walked into Reichenau an der Rax where we enjoyed a delicious traditional meal next to a lake in the park, a beautiful setting for a cafe. The sound of the motors is very different from a modern electric train, the old tram sounded like the trains I used to catch to school many years ago. "Yes" I did enjoy Austria, we visited a number of railways, both narrow and standard gauge, I will be posting more videos from this fascinating rail tour in the coming months. Take care. Tim.

Very nice video. Thanks for sharing! 😉👍
Thank you.
Once this railway line was operating till the station of the cable car of the mountain "Rax" and is now about hundred years old.

Great ride, beautiful scenery, wonderful houses along both sides of the track. No barrier at road interception. Locomotive blows the horn near every road crossing. Austria looks like Switzerland though i did not visit either of them. Greeting for such a nice travelling.
Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. The train is slow, plenty of time for the driver and motorists to see each other. It is a bit like Switzerland, the main difference is the style of buildings, only Switzerland has traditional Chalet style houses.

Hello, I fm from Ukraine!
Hi from England, I hope you keeping safe and well in the Ukraine.
another one..you cannot see the wood for the trees...
Train or tramway?
It is referred to as a railway, but the train looks more like a tram.

Cheers, Best wishes from England.
Very nice operation. I am curious as to why track in the UK and Europe is laid with the joints opposite each other as that leads to kinky track in curves. When the rail ends are staggered, the curves tend to be smoother than if the joints are even. I get that replacing track in a panel is easy if there is a crane. I have seen the results of laying track in panels and the joints are even that the joints are beat down into the ballast and grade from the impact of the wheels on the same tie. But we do have about 33,000 lb wheel loads.
Hi Roy, track panels on most of the railways I visit are conventional with the joints in line. I have seen the result as the track dips, increasing the hammer blow action of passing trains. The kinks you mention affect joints on curved track in almost every situation, even on my model railway. The answer is continuously welded track where possible. I have travelled over tracks where joints aren't in line, the ride on such lines is a bit uncomfortable because the tracks still dip at joints, when they are in line the train rises and falls equally, when they are not in line the train rocks from side to side because the wheels on either side are not rising and falling together. The only real answer is longer track panels, although the Swiss use a novel form of "Y" shaped rail tie to hold the alignment of the track by spreading the forces over a larger area. A 25 Ton axle load combined with the hammer action of passing trains was never going to make the job of a track maintenance engineer easy.
Why is camera bad ??
Done it again Tim.
Cheers, I am pleased you enjoyed it.

Curious beast, looks like the love child of a romantic union of a tram and a rail motor! LOL And at 25:00 unhooking and running around the trailer carriage..... but then leaving it behind! Hmmmmmm.......
Hi Neil, the line is referred to as a railway, although it looked more like a tramway, especially when considering the rolling stock, more tram than train? There were not many passenger, no real need for the trailer on the return trip.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I hope they remembered to fetch it back from where they left it(the trailer car). I was just having one of my "attempts" at humour, and we both know how "humorous" they are! LOL

Did you take the Rax seilbahn to the top of the mountain while you were there? Amazing views on a clear day. Mind you, it was also the only place I saw litter in my entire stay in Austria. Sad.

Hello Tim, this beautiful foothill area, and the railway, similar to old tram that left a city for runs suburban area, immersed me in beautiful old atmosphere of 1960s -- is very good! Thank you very much. Chuck
Hi Chuck, it is so nice that these wonderful little railways have survived to remind us of the days when life moved at a slower pace, a time when enjoying the day was more important than making money.
Hi, Tim! When I have a sleep, then these are sleeps from the past. It’s a kind of temporal nostalgia, hehehe... Sometimes in a sleep I catch myself thinking that I’m here in the past, enjoy leisurely and natural life, talk with friends and relatives, and after all, its things I'm waiting for me in my present in reality. Sometimes for some reason, to return to your own you need to buy a plane ticket, hehehe! :-) The world is slowly by slowly going crazy in unreal... and I can see with it too... Good luck and warmth in the house! Chuck

Dreams are an escape to a nice place, away from every problems and pain. I hope Uncle Pirin sends warm weather to Sandanski soon, spring is just around the corner. Take care. Tim.
When I was young, and in middle years too, I saw more “colored” dreams that looked like reality. Now, most often, I am bifurcating as if, when I have such a strange dream -- as if I were in two places at once, as in two universes -- in essence, to be in the past, to experience long lived, and sometimes not been with me never, and there is to be in a different universe -- I think so it... It is still sunny with us, and even in the morning the temperature did not drop below about 0°С +/-1°С. In the afternoon, +6-7°С in sunny weather.
