Thanks OldTime Bob! I have a definite preference for skin heads, and I have a new one to mount, but I'm gonna stick with the Ren head for now. The convenience/less hassle factor weighs heavy at the moment. Come winter, and more stable humidity, that will change.
Hey Jack! Great video. IMHO: The skin head has a tiny bit more volume, a bit more pronounced bass, an overall slightly deeper tone and a tad more sustain. It also seems to have slightly more overtones. The Ren head sounds fantastic too. If I was in a climate that gave skin heads fits, I would not hesitate to use the Ren head ,that's my $0.02 anyway!
i love the sound on my banjo with goat skin and nylon strings 😁
That’s a great combo!
They both sound great but I like the skinhead a little bit better

Nice One Jack. Educational, and Great Playing, as always. STP.
Thanks STP! Always great to hear from you.
Skin head has more of a twang.

Good ear on what you perceive!. I would agree.
Where did you get the skin head and is it goat or calf?
It's a thin goatskin head. It came from Mark Hickler, the luthier who built the neck for the banjo (hicklerbanjo.com).
