The Harrier Jump Jet can indeed hover. The plane first flew in 1967 and has been devoloped and improved since then. I live in the UK and I saw it at the Farnborough International Airshow when it was first introduced, it flew in, stopped in mid air and then flew backwards for a little before landing vertically. It was a jaw dropping moment.
Came here just to say all of this lol. But it can't hover as long as what's shown in the movie. It's more for takeoff and landing. Engines burn up beyond that.
Since everyone wants to put out facts about the Harrier, correct me if i'm wrong but, wasn't it also made mainly as a Naval asset? The vertical lift was useful for landing and taking off from an aircraft carrier at sea.
It also performed extremel well during the Falklands War, taking on Argentinian Mirages on many occasions. I could be mistaken, but I think the only ones shot down were to ground fire, not air-to-air engagements.
It’s an absolutely incredible machine, and it’s nice to think that us ol’ Brits were able to make something like that! Several shots of the Harriers in the movie were genuine planes, and the production team had to lay special asphalt on the highway to let it land and take off, as the heat from the vectored jets would’ve melted the road surface! Of course, it couldn’t perform the extended hovering that Arnie made it do, and his daughter would’ve immediately been sucked into the intakes instead of being able to hang on like she did (and Arnie too, with the canopy being shot away!), but still, so much fun!
And the chemistry between Arnold and Tom Arnold is amazing. This movie is the perfect combination of comic relief, twists, non-stop action, a fun plot, and good messaging.

Whenever it takes off, somewhere the British national anthem plays and multiple cups of tea spontaneously come into existence just through sheer force of will and badassery, everyone in the UK, including newly borns stand to attention and salutes silently as a single tear rolls down their cheek.
The daughter, Dana, was played by Eliza Dushku who was Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the lead actress on Tru Calling and Dollhouse. Also she was in Bring it On.
Shame she was molested by that pedophile stunt coordinator. At least Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold and even James Cameron supported her.
There was a planned "sequel" with Dana, even had photos of Eliza in Nikita or Natasha Nlack Widow Romanov type poses with a silencer equipped gun. Dana and her parents do show up on the world of Diane Castle's A Brane Of Extroraonary Women series on the Twisting The Hellmouth fan fiction website; along with BOTH Faith Lehane AND Echo.
The older gentleman with the eyepatch at "Omega Sector" was played by Charlton Heston...which you saw maaany movies ago in both Ben Hur and Ten Commandments as judah Ben-Hur and Moses, respectively. He was also famous for the original Planet of the Apes series as well as a bunch of westerns, crime dramas and other awesome films. A True Legend of the Silver Screen. Tom Arnold's line about his ex wife taking the ice cube trays actually happened. He was talking to James Cameron about Roseanne leaving him and doing that and he put the line in the script for him
I love the scene where Harry is killing people left and right and both of you are totally focused on how he should handle his relationship with his wife.
Cameron definitely knows how to put asses in the seats. Pure action + relatable family drama + explosions + muscles + special effects + Jamie Lee looking hot + marriage dynamics...he knows how to check every box. Everyone can focus on something entirely different if they want.
I couldn't take this reaction...they are good at reacting to dramatic movies but their sense of humor is lacking, let's say. Comedy doesn't work on them, especially Cassie.
Dammit...R.I.P. Mr. Paxton. Aliens was the F****** Bomb, and Hudson is still one of my favorite characters of all time! He knocked it out of the park in this movie with yet another fantastic character.
Little fact: in the interrogation scene, Helen suggests the name "Natasha" to her contact's "Boris" because Boris Badinoff and his evil wife Natasha were the bad-guy spies in old "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoons. They are showing their ages here a bit. If you are not familiar with Rocky and Bullwinkle, it was a very funny yet satirical cartoon a long, long time ago.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I love the tongue in cheek over the top action and premise. A well known fun fact: When Jamie Lee Curtis was dancing and slipped off the pole, that was not in the script. Arnold really was jumping up to help...but her rebound was so quick and such comedy gold they decided to keep it.
In fact, in most movies, when people fall down it's not in the script...also famously: George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove, and John Rhys-Davies in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In the original script it was supposed to be nude. Jamie was ok with doing it. But she had a talk with the director about making it more fun. And after the unexpected fall. They all knew it was perfect, And just moved on.

The airplane Arnold is using in the movie is a Harrier Jump Jet, which was capable of vertical flight by using nozzles on the body and diverting their direction to hover or normal flight.
@@curtisberard7831 the Harrier is not a VTOL aircraft, it's a STOVL aircraft. It's not designed to takeoff vertically. If you took off vertically in a Harrier, you'd immediately have to land due to how little fuel you would have at that point, not to mention you'd have no payload and very little water left for the water injection system for vectored flight operations. STOVL is Short Take Off Vertical Landing. The Harrier fully loaded(fuel and weapons) rolls down the runway/flight deck with the nozzles at about a 50-60' angle and usually gets airborne around 100-120kts. Coming in to vertically land, it has a max of about 2300lbs of fuel, 500lbs of water and no weapons (Max vertical landing weight around 19900lbs). Slowing itself down using the control surfaces and then the nozzles going to 25' initially then 60' and on final 82' for touchdown safely on the deck of the USS Tarawa :D

I was on the top floor of a 20 story building looking at the Ohio River about 8 blocks away during an air show. A Harrier stopped over the river, hovered a minute, then slowly rotated to face me. I was very glad I wouldn't be on the receiving end of the destruction he could give.
That's actually a McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II, the American second generation Harrier, the USMC no longer used the British Hawker Siddeley AV-8A/C Harriers in 1994. The Brits had their own second gen development and the US/Brits worked together on their respective successor Harrier projects tailoring each to the specific needs of the USMC and RN.
One moment that ALWAYS gets me in this movie is Bill Paxton (Simon) when Harry reveals his face at the bridge. Goes from panicky "Oh Jesus, oh no, no, no" then looks at him "It's you" and the salesman still comes out "Still interested in that Vette at all?" 😂 I crack up every time lol
A few fun little "Blink and you'll miss it" moments, along with some trivia: 1. Juno points out that Harry was married to Helen for 15 years. Under interrogation, Harry admitted he'd been a spy for 17 years. That means he's been a spy for the entirety of his marriage. 2. Gib says "I've been in the van for 15 years," which would suggest that Harry's transition to field work full time happened shortly after his marriage (which was 16 years ago by this point in the film), meaning that Harry probably only had one year of relative 'calm' with his wife before he became even more distant. 3. The Uzi firing as it falls down the stairs is realistic. In fact, they couldn't figure out how to rig it to fire like that, and after the armorer on set pointed out that Uzis are known for firing when dropped, they just *tossed it down the stairs* and it started firing (blanks, of course). 4. Even before she becomes a spy, Helen displays elements of being able to think quickly under pressure. She bites Harry's arm during her initial capture, and the guy she knees in the balls during her initial capture was Gib, meaning she *kinda* got to take out a bit of revenge on both of the men that got her mixed up in the whole main plot to begin with. She also tells Harry "Let me handle this" even though at that time she genuinely believes she's an agent and he's just a salesman. This is probably why she was able to adapt to the job so quickly.
I always get choked up at the "interrogation" scene when Helen says "there's so much I wanted to do wit this life and I haven't done any of it" That's a heartbreaking line.

I think that plane’s a Harrier Jump Jet. Those types of planes are called VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) so they don’t need a runway. They’re really cool
Its the AV-8B Harrier II, the improved version of the Harrier. Technically speaking the extended period hovering in the movie is fairly unrealistic as it uses a hell of a lot of fuel especially with a full weapons load. When hovering at air shows they are usually without weapons to save on weight and even then they can only maintain the hover for a short time. Damn spectacular though.
You are correct. It uses vectored thrust. Normally, for short takeoffs they'll taxi slowly instead of taking off vertically so they don't burn a hole into the runway. I've seen Harriers burn right through asphalt in seconds. A newer vectored thrust military VTOL plane is the F-35B. Because they are configured very much like a "normal" jet, people have a difficult time believing they're real when they see them hovering. It takes some getting used to as an observer when you hear the jet engines screaming and the plane is hovering. Rotate the nozzle and it can accelerate to more than the speed of sound. The F35B is good for Mach 1.6 or so (1200mph).
38:44 Jamie Lee Curtis performed the helicopter stunt herself on her birthday. She had to convince director Cameron first and later described the stunt as one of the most exciting moments of her life.
The Mummy is one of those movies that actually gets better with age. I rewatched it not too long ago and it just reminds me of the days of fun movies for the sake of a good show.

The plane is real. It's called a Harrier 'jump jet" that can take off and land vertically. It's called a VTOL for vertical takeoff and landing. I saw them fly when I used to go to airshows at the Marine Corp base at El Toro. Arnold was also in Total Recall. But you have to call him AAA-nuld! You might want to also check him out in The Last Action Hero.

41:14 "I don't know if that's good for the building stability." It'll be fine. In 1993 terrorists drove a truck full of explosives into the parking garage under the World Trade Center and blew it up. The entire building was closed for less than a month while repairs were beguna and inspectors checked for structural damage. The blast was so huge that nearby restaurants and other building were also damaged. Total repair costs: $400 million. Total structural damage: one structural beam had to be replaced. It wasn't a problem as there were hundreds more that were not damaged. Compared to that, all this plane did was break some glass and some sheetrock. Literally zero structural damage. Total repair bill: about $1 million, give or take.
If you want another must see Arnold movie you NEED to watch the original Total Recall from 1990. I would say it is one of his most unique movies and its from the same author that wrote Bladerunner.
One of my all-timers, but so is Robocop. I think Verhoeven's... eccentricities are too much for Cassie; there are too many "that's gonna haunt my nightmares" moments. Also, she often misinterprets the tone that directors as unique as Verhoeven are going for, and Total Recall definitely has a weird one.
100% agree. Cassie and "her friend" Carli would alternate between being horrified and laughing out loud. Carli would spend the rest of the time trying to predict the next plot twist.
Look for a young Eliza Dushku as Dana, the daughter. She went on to be Faith in Buffy. The plane used is a British Hawker Harrier, known as a jump jet due to it's ability to take off & land vertically. There are 4 directional nozzles, 2 on each side under the wings.
The main bad guy was played by Art Malik, who you recently saw in the Timothy Dalton movie "The Living Daylights" where Malik played the Afgan leader who Bond rescues from the jail and later helps Bond.
The only problem is that they can’t recognize some actors by their face or their voice. Kinda like John Terry in The Living Daylights, he was Christian Sheperd in LOST
A movie I watched non-stop as a kid with Goldeneye and The Rock. This one has a perfect balance of action and comedy, with a brilliant cast and a lot of iconic moments.

I feel like Cassie wants to understand everything that is happening onscreen and sometimes she tries too hard. It has to make sense to her. This will work for certain genres but not others. I think that is why she finds it harder to relate to fast paced sight gag movies like Airplane and the Mel Brooks films. It doesn't give her time to let it sink in and she is not comfortable with that.
@@suebob16 It's a problem with casual moviegoers. They're not aware of the artifice of film as much. They witness a movie as if they're watching actual real world events happening. That means stuff like breaking the fourth wall or doing scene parodies based on how the movie is shot goes over their heads. They're not able to process and react to the cognitive dissonance fast enough to make it funny.
I think their assumption at the beginning that this movie is a drama led them to not recognize a lot of the jokes. To the point that even at the end they said that there are only bits of comedic relief despite the fact that this film is categorized as an action comedy.
YES. I saw True Lies in the theater when it came out (cause I'm old) and the crowd laughed through the whole film! ...It bugged me to no end that these girls missed about 80% of the humor!

They would’ve had to go even more cartoony and ridiculous to outdo themselves. It’s perfect as it is - mad, excessive, silly, running on the edge of poor taste at times but never quite going that far. I might even go so far as to call it Schwarzenegger’s last great film!

I think The Mummy they're watching is the one that's not really a horror movie so it's kinda funny they're saving it until October. I'm pretty sure it was a summer blockbuster.
Cried multiple times just watching this reaction vid. Harry and Helen are such a beautiful, awesome couple. I kinda wish that there had been a sequel, like still in the 90s with both of them kicking ass.
I remember seeing this in theatres with my best friend. The scene where Harry and Helen escape the torture room, there's a moment - Helen steps out of her high heels and leaves them behind. Me, my best friend and about 5 or six other women spread around the theatre began applauding and cheering. Guys in the theatre were looking at us confused. Usually in action movies, the woman would keep on those heels, trip and fall, twist her ankle and an endanger, herself or the hero or get them both caught. Helen taking off those shoes was so subtle, but so awesome and we loved it. James Cameron is a jerk in real life, but he always films women great.
He "always films women great??" WTF are you talking about- this film has misogyny written all over it- and I'm a guy. Even Leonard Maltin in his review of this film critiqued this scene as a "general putdown of women."

What I loved most about this movie is the casting. Charlton Heston, obviously, and he is clearly having fun. But also Tom Arnold proving that he can actually act. Bill Paxton, very much cast against type and absolutely brilliant in it. And the villain is played by Art Malik, who was also in Timothy Dalton’s first James Bond movie.
I wouldn't say Paxton was cast against type - his Aliens Hudson is a similar character, I would say those are much more memorable than the straight man types such as Titatic and Twister
That guy with the eyepatch is Moses!!! You see him every Easter. Jamie is in Halloween, Prom Night, she was the original "scream queen", but she's been in many comedies too.
Fun fact: Arnold decided to add the Tango scene at the end of this movie after seeing Al Pacino do the Tango in SCENT OF A WOMAN. Arnold was inspired to do his own Tango scene and even used the same Tango music from SCENT (the name of the song is “Por Una Cabeza”). Arnold said that his Tango performance was the most challenging thing to do, above all of the other physical stunts in the movie, and even rehearsed and took Tango lessons for 6 months prior to filming that Tango scene, to make sure that his Tango was just as good as Al Pacino’s Tango. (Al Pacino ended up winning the Oscar for Best Actor in SCENT OF A WOMAN, which came out in 1992. TRUE LIES came out in 1994.)
The Harriers (along with a version of the newer F-35) are able to take off and land vertically. Also nukes are designed not to go off unless they're armed. Dunno if that would have still applied if it was hit by a missile...
He said it contained “enriched Uranium.” I’m not sure if that’s the correct terminology. That would make it a Hiroshima-style U-235 bullet fired into a U-235 core design. I suppose if you set off the charge that fires the bullet, but seems pretty unlikely in the process of destruction by an external force. And there were probably failsafes to prevent that. If it got hit with a missile though, it would become a dirty bomb, spreading radioactive particulate matter everywhere in the immediate area.

People often claim the moment when Jamie Lee Curtis falls during the bedroom dance wasn't planned. That's false. She rehearsed the scene with James Cameron and she slipped and fell and got right back up like nothing happened. They agreed it would be funny to add it in because it works for her character. Arnold had no idea, so his reaction was real. However, her slip and fall during the end credits dance was not scripted. That became conflated with the earlier dance fall in people's minds.

This movie is one of my favourite's! Pure entertainment. Granted a few things will never happen in real life, but it is Hollywood and I like it for the mix of jokes, funny scenes and the action. Glad you and your sister watched this one, it's a classic! (RIP Bill Paxton)

Named after a bird of prey, it was originally developed by British manufacturer Hawker Siddeley in the 1960s. The Harrier emerged as the only truly successful V/STOL design of the many attempted during that era. It was conceived to operate from improvised bases, such as car parks or forest clearings, without requiring large and vulnerable air bases. Later, the design was adapted for use from aircraft carriers. The horse in the early part of the film was a product of evolution or gods divine plan depending on your point of view.... ;)

I would have loved Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Swarznegger together in more films, I thought they made a fantastic couple, really equal screen presences and so charismatic together. True Lies just got better for me with every rewatch. My initial impression was “just another action movie, some good laughs”. But as it turned up on the TV over and over, I kept getting more and more impressed and in love with it. Crazy action stunts with comedy that never got old flowing in and out really naturally. And then the real pathos of the abandoned but still loving wife and the estranged daughter getting out of the house where her absent father has left a gaping hole. So happy to see you quote “Get In Tha Choppah!” And to recognise all the references to James Bond. I think like Galaxy Quest is a loving homage to Star Trek, True Lies is a loving homage to James Bond, that then goes it’s own way.
You were so upset at the bedroom scene that he didn’t let her know it was him: he was giving her the mystery/excitement she asked for - if he just told her it was him immediately then that would’ve been lost…
The old guy with the patched eye was Charleston Heston. Played Moses in The Ten Commandments. Cameron did the first two Terminator movies, Aliens, Avatar and The Titanic. I saw this in the theaters when it came out. We loved this movie. It was sooo much fun. Great reaction ladies.
@@MP197742 Abyss basically just broke even at the box office. It wasn't really a big hit. It's more of a cult film at this point. Anyone who's a James Cameron fan obviously values it highly because it's his most personal film, and touches on all of the tropes he's used in his career. But it's become an obscurity to more casual filmgoers.
I'm glad you guys enjoyed this. It's my favorite Arnold movie, and he has a few good ones. An Arnold film that I haven't seen since it came out in the theaters is "Twins." I remember it being very funny and good quality, but I don't ever see reactions for it, for some reason. Maybe it's just not available? Anyway, that would probably be another fun one if you can find it.
It was my favourite movie for a while when I was a kid. Really funny, actually touching, and Kelly Preston (RIP) was so beautiful it blew my pre-teen mind. Would love to see a reaction to that one. "Tonight is your night bro..."!
I recall back in the day two people were debating about whether to go to the theater and see Clear and Present Danger or True Lies, two movies which are now on the channel...gotta love those 90s action flicks

When I was a kid... Maybe 8 or 9 years old, I read a book by Arnold Schwarzenegger. This book was a workout book giving techniques and advice. There are some passages that can give you insight to his mind. One of the best things I remember from him was his work out progression. He didn't max out his work outs. He started with a lighter manageable weight. Then he would have a schedule and a commitment to increase that weight by 2.5 pounds every week. So, no matter what your goal may be, this method would get you there in time. In 10 weeks you can increase your work out weight by 25 pounds. 2.5 x #of weeks = goal. In his mind bodybuilding, even though it's somewhat of an art, Arnold Schwarzenegger turned the whole process into an equation. In some subtle ways he is a machine. :)
Jamie Lee Curtis has had a huge movie career. Can't believe you haven't seen more of her than this. Her first movie was "Halloween". BTW - her mom was Janet Lee (Psycho) and dad was Tony Curtis (tons of movies too).

Simon was my favorite character. He is SO easy to hate but it's so funny the way they mess with him. I wish Bill Paxton would have gotten a chance to do his own action movie before he passed away. The guy had such range as an actor.

Love the way Cameron can film scenes at night time in the dark. It just looks better than most directors. Anyway, the audience I saw this with was obviously having a blast way back then.
Funny I was talking to my sister about how lately most directors seems to have forgot how to film in the dark and many movies you can´t see nothing but it never happens with James Cameron. He is amazing filming by night, underwater and one of the few ones that can use CGI that doesn´t suck. I admire him a lot.
I love how Charlton Heston is rocking the military cut, scar and eye patch like classic Nick Fury. It's hard to remember Fury before Samuel L. Jackson took the role.
A lot of people don't know that Cameron wanted to do a comic book movie, pretty sure it was Spider-Man, and he wanted to have Heston as Nick Fury. If you know original Nick Fury, Heston is perfect for the role. It was a bit if a weird time for superhero movies. This was around the time that Michael Jackson tried to buy the rights to make a Spider-Man movie and cast himself in the role.
True Lies was one of the best action films to come out of the 90's...period. And Bill Paxton was an absolute treasure in it. I got to know him very well since we both lived in the same city and we kept running into each other around town and eventually started up a good friendship. He will always be remembered, and always missed. And if you ever want someone aside from your sister to cuddle up with and watch films with...I absolutely volunteer as tribute! :)
The Harrier Jump Jet can indeed hover. The plane first flew in 1967 and has been devoloped and improved since then. I live in the UK and I saw it at the Farnborough International Airshow when it was first introduced, it flew in, stopped in mid air and then flew backwards for a little before landing vertically. It was a jaw dropping moment.
Came here just to say all of this lol. But it can't hover as long as what's shown in the movie. It's more for takeoff and landing. Engines burn up beyond that.

Since everyone wants to put out facts about the Harrier, correct me if i'm wrong but, wasn't it also made mainly as a Naval asset? The vertical lift was useful for landing and taking off from an aircraft carrier at sea.
It also performed extremel well during the Falklands War, taking on Argentinian Mirages on many occasions. I could be mistaken, but I think the only ones shot down were to ground fire, not air-to-air engagements.
It’s an absolutely incredible machine, and it’s nice to think that us ol’ Brits were able to make something like that! Several shots of the Harriers in the movie were genuine planes, and the production team had to lay special asphalt on the highway to let it land and take off, as the heat from the vectored jets would’ve melted the road surface!
Of course, it couldn’t perform the extended hovering that Arnie made it do, and his daughter would’ve immediately been sucked into the intakes instead of being able to hang on like she did (and Arnie too, with the canopy being shot away!), but still, so much fun!
The chemistry between Jaime Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger is fantastic in this movie.
It really helps to bring their characters to life.
Her acting in EEAAO was great and everything...but nice to remember she was legit hot at one point.
And the chemistry between Arnold and Tom Arnold is amazing. This movie is the perfect combination of comic relief, twists, non-stop action, a fun plot, and good messaging.

Arnold always have great chemistry with kids, and Dushku here was not an exception.

Whenever it takes off, somewhere the British national anthem plays and multiple cups of tea spontaneously come into existence just through sheer force of will and badassery, everyone in the UK, including newly borns stand to attention and salutes silently as a single tear rolls down their cheek.
The daughter, Dana, was played by Eliza Dushku who was Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the lead actress on Tru Calling and Dollhouse. Also she was in Bring it On.
Shame she was molested by that pedophile stunt coordinator. At least Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold and even James Cameron supported her.

The older gentleman with the eyepatch at "Omega Sector" was played by Charlton Heston...which you saw maaany movies ago in both Ben Hur and Ten Commandments as judah Ben-Hur and Moses, respectively. He was also famous for the original Planet of the Apes series as well as a bunch of westerns, crime dramas and other awesome films. A True Legend of the Silver Screen. Cameron definitely knows how to put asses in the seats. Pure action + relatable family drama + explosions + muscles + special effects + Jamie Lee looking hot + marriage dynamics...he knows how to check every box. Everyone can focus on something entirely different if they want.

They are showing their ages here a bit. If you are not familiar with Rocky and Bullwinkle, it was a very funny yet satirical cartoon a long, long time ago.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I love the tongue in cheek over the top action and premise. A well known fun fact: When Jamie Lee Curtis was dancing and slipped off the pole, that was not in the script. Arnold really was jumping up to help...but her rebound was so quick and such comedy gold they decided to keep it.
In fact, in most movies, when people fall down it's not in the script...also famously: George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove, and John Rhys-Davies in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In the original script it was supposed to be nude. Jamie was ok with doing it. But she had a talk with the director about making it more fun. And after the unexpected fall. They all knew it was perfect, And just moved on.
Jamie Lee Curtis later admitted that she and James Cameron planned the fall during rehearsals, but did not tell Arnold, so his reaction was genuine.

@@curtisberard7831 the Harrier is not a VTOL aircraft, it's a STOVL aircraft. It's not designed to takeoff vertically. If you took off vertically in a Harrier, you'd immediately have to land due to how little fuel you would have at that point, not to mention you'd have no payload and very little water left for the water injection system for vectored flight operations. STOVL is Short Take Off Vertical Landing. The Harrier fully loaded(fuel and weapons) rolls down the runway/flight deck with the nozzles at about a 50-60' angle and usually gets airborne around 100-120kts. Coming in to vertically land, it has a max of about 2300lbs of fuel, 500lbs of water and no weapons (Max vertical landing weight around 19900lbs). Slowing itself down using the control surfaces and then the nozzles going to 25' initially then 60' and on final 82' for touchdown safely on the deck of the USS Tarawa :D

I've said that for years. Back to the Future and Ghostbusters are two other examples of perfect films.
The Harrier Jump Jet. Actually named after a bird of prey, the Harrier. It indeed can hover. Developed by the British and used by the U.S. Marines. It uses vector thrusting, truly a sight to behold.
I was on the top floor of a 20 story building looking at the Ohio River about 8 blocks away during an air show. A Harrier stopped over the river, hovered a minute, then slowly rotated to face me. I was very glad I wouldn't be on the receiving end of the destruction he could give.
That's actually a McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II, the American second generation Harrier, the USMC no longer used the British Hawker Siddeley AV-8A/C Harriers in 1994.
The Brits had their own second gen development and the US/Brits worked together on their respective successor Harrier projects tailoring each to the specific needs of the USMC and RN.
One moment that ALWAYS gets me in this movie is Bill Paxton (Simon) when Harry reveals his face at the bridge. Goes from panicky "Oh Jesus, oh no, no, no" then looks at him "It's you" and the salesman still comes out "Still interested in that Vette at all?" 😂 I crack up every time lol
A few fun little "Blink and you'll miss it" moments, along with some trivia:
1. Juno points out that Harry was married to Helen for 15 years. Under interrogation, Harry admitted he'd been a spy for 17 years. That means he's been a spy for the entirety of his marriage.
2. Gib says "I've been in the van for 15 years," which would suggest that Harry's transition to field work full time happened shortly after his marriage (which was 16 years ago by this point in the film), meaning that Harry probably only had one year of relative 'calm' with his wife before he became even more distant.
3. The Uzi firing as it falls down the stairs is realistic. In fact, they couldn't figure out how to rig it to fire like that, and after the armorer on set pointed out that Uzis are known for firing when dropped, they just *tossed it down the stairs* and it started firing (blanks, of course).
4. Even before she becomes a spy, Helen displays elements of being able to think quickly under pressure. She bites Harry's arm during her initial capture, and the guy she knees in the balls during her initial capture was Gib, meaning she *kinda* got to take out a bit of revenge on both of the men that got her mixed up in the whole main plot to begin with. She also tells Harry "Let me handle this" even though at that time she genuinely believes she's an agent and he's just a salesman. This is probably why she was able to adapt to the job so quickly.
I always get choked up at the "interrogation" scene when Helen says "there's so much I wanted to do wit this life and I haven't done any of it" That's a heartbreaking line.

I think that plane’s a Harrier Jump Jet. Those types of planes are called VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) so they don’t need a runway. They’re really cool
Its the AV-8B Harrier II, the improved version of the Harrier. Technically speaking the extended period hovering in the movie is fairly unrealistic as it uses a hell of a lot of fuel especially with a full weapons load. When hovering at air shows they are usually without weapons to save on weight and even then they can only maintain the hover for a short time.

You are correct. It uses vectored thrust. Normally, for short takeoffs they'll taxi slowly instead of taking off vertically so they don't burn a hole into the runway. I've seen Harriers burn right through asphalt in seconds. A newer vectored thrust military VTOL plane is the F-35B. Because they are configured very much like a "normal" jet, people have a difficult time believing they're real when they see them hovering. It takes some getting used to as an observer when you hear the jet engines screaming and the plane is hovering. Rotate the nozzle and it can accelerate to more than the speed of sound. The F35B is good for Mach 1.6 or so (1200mph).
Years ago, a Harrier came to Kansas City for airshow. Down thrust blew apart the runway at old downtown airport.

38:44 Jamie Lee Curtis performed the helicopter stunt herself on her birthday. She had to convince director Cameron first and later described the stunt as one of the most exciting moments of her life.
The Mummy is one of those movies that actually gets better with age. I rewatched it not too long ago and it just reminds me of the days of fun movies for the sake of a good show.

The plane is real. It's called a Harrier 'jump jet" that can take off and land vertically. It's called a VTOL for vertical takeoff and landing. I saw them fly when I used to go to airshows at the Marine Corp base at El Toro. Arnold was also in Total Recall. But you have to call him AAA-nuld! You might want to also check him out in The Last Action Hero.

In 1993 terrorists drove a truck full of explosives into the parking garage under the World Trade Center and blew it up.
The entire building was closed for less than a month while repairs were beguna and inspectors checked for structural damage.
The blast was so huge that nearby restaurants and other building were also damaged.
Total repair costs: $400 million.
Total structural damage: one structural beam had to be replaced. It wasn't a problem as there were hundreds more that were not damaged.
Compared to that, all this plane did was break some glass and some sheetrock.
Literally zero structural damage.
Total repair bill: about $1 million, give or take.
RIP Bill Paxton, such a great actor.
If you want another must see Arnold movie you NEED to watch the original Total Recall from 1990. I would say it is one of his most unique movies and its from the same author that wrote Bladerunner.

One of my all-timers, but so is Robocop. I think Verhoeven's... eccentricities are too much for Cassie; there are too many "that's gonna haunt my nightmares" moments. Also, she often misinterprets the tone that directors as unique as Verhoeven are going for, and Total Recall definitely has a weird one.

100% agree. Cassie and "her friend" Carli would alternate between being horrified and laughing out loud. Carli would spend the rest of the time trying to predict the next plot twist.
Look for a young Eliza Dushku as Dana, the daughter. She went on to be Faith in Buffy. The plane used is a British Hawker Harrier, known as a jump jet due to it's ability to take off & land vertically. There are 4 directional nozzles, 2 on each side under the wings.
I think she also played an FBI agent in an episode of "The Big Bang Theory"?

The main bad guy was played by Art Malik, who you recently saw in the Timothy Dalton movie "The Living Daylights" where Malik played the Afgan leader who Bond rescues from the jail and later helps Bond.
The only problem is that they can’t recognize some actors by their face or their voice. Kinda like John Terry in The Living Daylights, he was Christian Sheperd in LOST
A movie I watched non-stop as a kid with Goldeneye and The Rock. This one has a perfect balance of action and comedy, with a brilliant cast and a lot of iconic moments.
I used to watch the Rock with my dad all the time, I loved that movie
True Lies is a classic. James Cameron's The Abyss is another must see movie from the same Cameron era.

Cassie is the only person I’ve seen watch comedies anxiously. Like “OMG what is Mr. Bean doing, why is he doing that, it doesn’t make sense.”
Right? I always find myself saying, “Just relax & go with it.” It’s like they get so into it, they don’t realize it’s a movie🤣
I feel like Cassie wants to understand everything that is happening onscreen and sometimes she tries too hard. It has to make sense to her. This will work for certain genres but not others. I think that is why she finds it harder to relate to fast paced sight gag movies like Airplane and the Mel Brooks films. It doesn't give her time to let it sink in and she is not comfortable with that.
@@suebob16 It's a problem with casual moviegoers. They're not aware of the artifice of film as much. They witness a movie as if they're watching actual real world events happening. That means stuff like breaking the fourth wall or doing scene parodies based on how the movie is shot goes over their heads. They're not able to process and react to the cognitive dissonance fast enough to make it funny.
I think their assumption at the beginning that this movie is a drama led them to not recognize a lot of the jokes. To the point that even at the end they said that there are only bits of comedic relief despite the fact that this film is categorized as an action comedy.

YES. I saw True Lies in the theater when it came out (cause I'm old) and the crowd laughed through the whole film! ...It bugged me to no end that these girls missed about 80% of the humor!

Great reaction! Jamie Lee Curtis won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for this role, and she did the helicopter stunt on her 35th birthday (fun facts)! And yes, that is the best friend from Bring it On :) No spoilers, but note, The Mummy (assuming you are talking about the 1999 film) is more in the vein of this film (action/comedy), rather than horror, just so you are not thrown off come October.

Cameron and co. seriously considered doing a sequel, but it proved difficult to synch up everyones’ schedules… and then a certain incident in 2001 happened and it was realised that the subject matter could not be treated in the same comedic manner as before. Personally I’m quite glad that True Lies remains a standalone film - I mean, how would you top a film in which a thermonuclear explosion on US soil is basically a throwaway moment?! They would’ve had to go even more cartoony and ridiculous to outdo themselves. It’s perfect as it is - mad, excessive, silly, running on the edge of poor taste at times but never quite going that far. I might even go so far as to call it Schwarzenegger’s last great film!

I think The Mummy they're watching is the one that's not really a horror movie so it's kinda funny they're saving it until October. I'm pretty sure it was a summer blockbuster.
Cried multiple times just watching this reaction vid. Harry and Helen are such a beautiful, awesome couple. I kinda wish that there had been a sequel, like still in the 90s with both of them kicking ass.

I remember seeing this in theatres with my best friend. The scene where Harry and Helen escape the torture room, there's a moment - Helen steps out of her high heels and leaves them behind. Me, my best friend and about 5 or six other women spread around the theatre began applauding and cheering. Guys in the theatre were looking at us confused. Usually in action movies, the woman would keep on those heels, trip and fall, twist her ankle and an endanger, herself or the hero or get them both caught. Helen taking off those shoes was so subtle, but so awesome and we loved it. James Cameron is a jerk in real life, but he always films women great.
Heels in an action scenario do indeed sound insane. But perfect for impromptu strip tease scene.

What I loved most about this movie is the casting. Charlton Heston, obviously, and he is clearly having fun. But also Tom Arnold proving that he can actually act. Bill Paxton, very much cast against type and absolutely brilliant in it. And the villain is played by Art Malik, who was also in Timothy Dalton’s first James Bond movie.
I wouldn't say Paxton was cast against type - his Aliens Hudson is a similar character, I would say those are much more memorable than the straight man types such as Titatic and Twister

That guy with the eyepatch is Moses!!! You see him every Easter. Jamie is in Halloween, Prom Night, she was the original "scream queen", but she's been in many comedies too.
Fun fact: Arnold decided to add the Tango scene at the end of this movie after seeing Al Pacino do the Tango in SCENT OF A WOMAN. Arnold was inspired to do his own Tango scene and even used the same Tango music from SCENT (the name of the song is “Por Una Cabeza”). Arnold said that his Tango performance was the most challenging thing to do, above all of the other physical stunts in the movie, and even rehearsed and took Tango lessons for 6 months prior to filming that Tango scene, to make sure that his Tango was just as good as Al Pacino’s Tango. (Al Pacino ended up winning the Oscar for Best Actor in SCENT OF A WOMAN, which came out in 1992. TRUE LIES came out in 1994.)

Also, that particular Harrier makes an appearance in The Avengers. During the Hulk's fight with Thor on the Helicarrier.
No the those nuke would not have gone off, but... if the nukes were blown apart the radioactive particles would have been very troublesome.
He said it contained “enriched Uranium.” I’m not sure if that’s the correct terminology. That would make it a Hiroshima-style U-235 bullet fired into a U-235 core design. I suppose if you set off the charge that fires the bullet, but seems pretty unlikely in the process of destruction by an external force. And there were probably failsafes to prevent that. If it got hit with a missile though, it would become a dirty bomb, spreading radioactive particulate matter everywhere in the immediate area.

The quintessential 90’s action movie! This is probably the most genre defining movie of the 90’s and it was such a perfect fit.

People often claim the moment when Jamie Lee Curtis falls during the bedroom dance wasn't planned. That's false. She rehearsed the scene with James Cameron and she slipped and fell and got right back up like nothing happened. They agreed it would be funny to add it in because it works for her character. Arnold had no idea, so his reaction was real.
However, her slip and fall during the end credits dance was not scripted. That became conflated with the earlier dance fall in people's minds.

The plane’s an AV-8B Harrier II. The Marines have been flying them since the early 80s. They can both hover and take off and land vertically. It’s currently being replaced by the Joint Strike Fighter.
Jamie Lee Curtis really did that stunt hanging from a helicopter. She talked about it at that years Oscars. When you hear her scream, you can hear the fear in her voice as the car separates from below her over the ocean.
Definitely the kind of actress I wish was my mother. Just imagine going to school the next day and someone says "So, how's your mother doing?" "Nothing much, just hung on to Arnold Schwarzenegger from a helicopter."

I would have loved Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Swarznegger together in more films, I thought they made a fantastic couple, really equal screen presences and so charismatic together. True Lies just got better for me with every rewatch. My initial impression was “just another action movie, some good laughs”. But as it turned up on the TV over and over, I kept getting more and more impressed and in love with it. Crazy action stunts with comedy that never got old flowing in and out really naturally. And then the real pathos of the abandoned but still loving wife and the estranged daughter getting out of the house where her absent father has left a gaping hole. So happy to see you quote “Get In Tha Choppah!” And to recognise all the references to James Bond. I think like Galaxy Quest is a loving homage to Star Trek, True Lies is a loving homage to James Bond, that then goes it’s own way.
The guy playing the Arab terrorist is British actor Art Malik. He was in the James Bond movie “The Living Daylights” and in “A Passage to India”.
He played an awesome terrorist in this movie, haha.

The old guy with the patched eye was Charleston Heston. Played Moses in The Ten Commandments. Cameron did the first two Terminator movies, Aliens, Avatar and The Titanic. I saw this in the theaters when it came out. We loved this movie. It was sooo much fun. Great reaction ladies.
He also played the gas station attendant in Wayne's World 2.
Cameron also directed The Abyss, which I’m surprised more reactors on UA-cam don’t watch. It was a big movie in its time.
@@MP197742 Abyss basically just broke even at the box office. It wasn't really a big hit. It's more of a cult film at this point. Anyone who's a James Cameron fan obviously values it highly because it's his most personal film, and touches on all of the tropes he's used in his career. But it's become an obscurity to more casual filmgoers.
I'm glad you guys enjoyed this. It's my favorite Arnold movie, and he has a few good ones.
An Arnold film that I haven't seen since it came out in the theaters is "Twins." I remember it being very funny and good quality, but I don't ever see reactions for it, for some reason. Maybe it's just not available? Anyway, that would probably be another fun one if you can find it.
It was my favourite movie for a while when I was a kid. Really funny, actually touching, and Kelly Preston (RIP) was so beautiful it blew my pre-teen mind. Would love to see a reaction to that one. "Tonight is your night bro..."!

When I was a kid... Maybe 8 or 9 years old, I read a book by Arnold Schwarzenegger. This book was a workout book giving techniques and advice. There are some passages that can give you insight to his mind. One of the best things I remember from him was his work out progression. He didn't max out his work outs. He started with a lighter manageable weight. Then he would have a schedule and a commitment to increase that weight by 2.5 pounds every week. So, no matter what your goal may be, this method would get you there in time. In 10 weeks you can increase your work out weight by 25 pounds. 2.5 x #of weeks = goal. In his mind bodybuilding, even though it's somewhat of an art, Arnold Schwarzenegger turned the whole process into an equation. In some subtle ways he is a machine. :)

Simon was my favorite character. He is SO easy to hate but it's so funny the way they mess with him. I wish Bill Paxton would have gotten a chance to do his own action movie before he passed away. The guy had such range as an actor.

Love the way Cameron can film scenes at night time in the dark. It just looks better than most directors. Anyway, the audience I saw this with was obviously having a blast way back then.
Funny I was talking to my sister about how lately most directors seems to have forgot how to film in the dark and many movies you can´t see nothing but it never happens with James Cameron. He is amazing filming by night, underwater and one of the few ones that can use CGI that doesn´t suck. I admire him a lot.
I love how Charlton Heston is rocking the military cut, scar and eye patch like classic Nick Fury. It's hard to remember Fury before Samuel L. Jackson took the role.

A lot of people don't know that Cameron wanted to do a comic book movie, pretty sure it was Spider-Man, and he wanted to have Heston as Nick Fury. If you know original Nick Fury, Heston is perfect for the role.
It was a bit if a weird time for superhero movies. This was around the time that Michael Jackson tried to buy the rights to make a Spider-Man movie and cast himself in the role.
Just to add, Curtis loved filming this movie, and I think it shows, everyone is having just the right amount of fun.
True Lies was one of the best action films to come out of the 90's...period. And Bill Paxton was an absolute treasure in it. I got to know him very well since we both lived in the same city and we kept running into each other around town and eventually started up a good friendship. He will always be remembered, and always missed.
And if you ever want someone aside from your sister to cuddle up with and watch films with...I absolutely volunteer as tribute! :)
