  • Part 1 in my New Zealand series covers why I LOVE living in New Zealand & what it's really like here vs the USA. The differences surprise me everyday both good and not so good=)
    My fiancé, dog (Mr. Barkley) and I made the big decision a few years ago to move to New Zealand for a bit of adventure and to get away from the city. This year we are focusing on a more minimal, calm, and healthy lifestyle (hence the farm house in the middle of nowhere) in preparation for starting a family next year.
    I have degrees in Holistic Nutrition, Psychology & Hypnotherapy and I'd love you to follow along with us as I share some healthy habits and tips for your mind, body and spirit- especially if you are thinking of becoming a mama and would like to prepare. My content includes gluten and dairy free recipes, homemade products, honesty and hopefully a little entertainment as I document our journey while living abroad.
    I'm really so glad you're here- WELCOME & thank you SO MUCH for watching=)

    Having a baby is free from inception, so prenatal care, birth, and doctors visits till baby is 13. This is because there should be no excuses for women not getting care or for children needing a doctor. If you need help just go get it. Nice and simple. Glad you're enjoying NZ.

      Sadly that was our system, if you have an easy pregnancy then yes its awesome, lovely people, great support, but step out of that to a difficult pregnancy and your in trouble, our shortage of medical staff like nurses, midwife and specialists, under resourced hospitals, means if you have a difficult pregnancy then you won't get the care you would expect, hospitals are pushed to the max, and do miss things that lead to sad outcomes. And we don't have backup, you can't get insurance for pregnancy and you would be lucky to find a private specialist. Sorry for the negative comment, but I would hate for you use our system thinking we that great, because the truth is, you can't trust the hospitals when having a difficult pregnancy

    Glad you guys are loving the kiwi lifestyle and your sense of humour fits in quite well. Your appreciation of the kiwi health system compared to what you are used to cracks me up. You realise your families back stateside aren't going to believe you when you tell them of your experience and the cost of starting a family in NZ🤔.
    I didn't appreciate NZ until I lived in South East Asia for two and a half years at the age 19. When the door of the plane opened on my return and the rush of chilled clean air hit my lungs, I knew I was home. Yep, best country in the world (bar the politicians)😁.

      And lets not forget the outrageous lies that right wing US politicians have been trotting out for decades - "socialised medicine is bad for you and it costs you more". When you see how the rest of the world operates, little old NZ isn't too bad. Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark.... all pretty damn good too.
      So long as we pay our tax on wages, we all get pretty good services. The USA spends a lot of money on arms, and that hurts the health of their people and the quality of the infrastructure.

    Regarding healthcare if you can afford it get private health insurance too, you'll have the best of both worlds.
    The public system will take care of emergency care, and despite what people say it's pretty good at that. However the cost comes with elective or non-emergency health care. Wait lists are a killer - literally. Private insurance is cheaper then the US because they're not covering emergency care as well, and will allow you to "jump the queue" if something untoward pops up. Depending on your plan you might be able to get the cost of General Practitioner visits back too.

    In NZ we have midwives caring for all mums and babies up to 6 weeks, then Plunket nurses who give home or in-clinic care to every new baby in the country for regular check ups until age 5. Also GP’s and practice nurses who give free healthcare and vaccinations up to age 14. We also have specific services that care for certain cultural groups.

    You can get bagel bites in NZ. At least in New World and Countdown Supermarkets. Pretty sure I've also bought them at Pak'n'save. I think the brand is Abes. Maybe the ranch dressing would be in the international section at the supermarket or specialty stores. 🙂

    Hi! A couple of things:
    * Pak n Save has multiple brands of ranch dressing, though I couldn't say how it compares to the US variety. It's shelved with the other dressings. I guess the other chains do too, so you may just be looking in the wrong aisle.
    * cats aren't normally up to dealing with possums, but dogs can kill them on the ground.

      @@urizen7613 yep,seriously feisty cats will attack,kill and eat possums - we were working just out of Auckland 2 years ago and noticed a family of cats chewing on something sizable - it was a dead possum,and they seemed to be enjoying it. A few days later we saw 2 of the cats chasing a possum up a tree - needless to say,these cats weren't mucking around,and they definitely belonged to the household they were on,as we saw the owners feeding them. I guess that natural instinct was in them - I doubt very much,that it is a common practice with cats,as a possum can certainly defend themselves.

      @@robhaunui3343 Hey Rob, I've spent near 35 years living offgrid in the bush and know a lot about most of the creatures that live there. Until you actually see cats kill an adult possum, pull back on your claims a little. Seeing a few eating a dead one means nothing it no proof they killed it. And even though you saw someone feeding a couple, I'd suggest they were feral cats. Also I've eaten a hell of a lot of possum and as for tasting like chicken... you're dreaming! They actually taste a lot more like cat.

    • @robhaunui3343
      @robhaunui3343 Рік тому

      @@pianoman4967 good for you living off grid for as long as you have,but your claims of possum tasting like cat are dubious to say the least... I've eaten possum for decades,and as a stewing meat,it most certainly does taste like chicken. As for those cats we saw that were chewing on that possum,they were NOT feral cats and most definitely WERE pets of the property owners. Granted, these cats weren't "house" pets,but they still ran to their owners when called. We worked outside this property for nearly a week,so got familiar. You are correct in your assumption that seeing a cat eating a dead possum doesn't mean that it's caught it,but we had chatted to the owners a few times,and they said the cats were most certainly bringing possums back. Whether or not the possum/s were already dead is another thing. But as you would know,a cat is an opportunist (feral or domesticated),and most will try and get a meal whatever it may be...hey,you don't have to believe me what we saw,but that's your choice.

    • @pianoman4967
      @pianoman4967 Рік тому +1

      @@robhaunui3343 great reply and it clears things up somewhat. Firstly l was taking the p..s about what possum tastes like, it's just always a bit of a joke that so many things taste like chicken. I usually ate possum after marinating it in a mix of balsamic and beer, then into a casserole with whatever veg were around. I found that hand mincing it with 50/50 venison was good as well. Made good patties.
      Anyway, for the last couple of years I've had to live in town for winter coz I'm getting too old and buggered.

    "Because of their pleasant disposition, brushtail possums have been imported into the United States as pets." In the 2002 report when the US Assistant Secretary for Fish & Wildlife and Parks added Australian Brushtail possums (ABP) to the injurious wildlife species list, restricting the import and transport of Australian Brushtail possums. I heard many years ago(anecdotally) from US residents("outdoors people") that there was at least one small population of ABP in the wild in the Pacific North West. I suspect the US ABP's might have ended up as breakfast for Bobcats. NZ - there are moves to try and shift from 1080. E.g The AT220 resetting trap nz$500 each. Landcare Research's possum control projects. Medical - tourists and short-stay visitors to NZ are advised to have some form of medical insurance. An American person I was acquainted with some years ago who trained as a nurse in NZ worked in NZ children's health. The nurse was repeatedly ill (in early career by what was thought)as a result of contracting child illnesses they were likely never exposed to in their US upbringing.

      Yep. Not au-fait with NZ statistics but here the rise of the "off-grid" religion has seen a complementary increase in the "No-Vax" tinfoil hat brigade - leading to a significant rise in preventable diseases amongst children (and associated adults!) 🙄😬
      "Because of their pleasant disposition, brushtail possums" really IS a no brainser as anyone who has had Possum urine drip from their ceiling will assure you. Because of their adaptation to urban living, they are 1 of the very few native species (along with the large macropods here also - due to stock water provision in dry country) that have boomed since the White Fellahs arrived here. Like the rabbit here not the best import there!

    Hahaha…kinda funny. I’m a Maori living in the White Mountains of NH. So…..Miss USA…..Kiwis, since forever-r-r-r…..have been known to leave the Country as soon as they could get a passport. Why? Duh…you can only travel North-South for any period of time. Its like - Lets go somewhere else!
    I’ve driven from Cali to Maine / NH 3 times…and what I loved was, I didn’t see an Ocean the whole way.
    But anyway, Kiwi’s are flightless birds, and as soon as we can, we “Kiwi’s” take flight and head across the Pond, or to other far flung extremes.
    You are correct, Americans are more oft than not, less travelled than the average Kiwi. I’ve lived in California, AZ ( Payson, Prescott, Phoenix) , Maine ( Sebago Lake, Bridgton ), NH ( Portsmouth, North Conway, Bartlett - White Mountains ) - not including Canada…..so yes, we are a venturous lot of “Flightless Birds”. Kiwis can fly!!!

    Hi Morgan! Another energetic, interesting and funny video! Careful with your love of possums. Yes, introduced from Australia to establish a fur industry but now a total ecological curse. Since they first arrived they've evolved and adapted dramatically in both size and eating habits. Mind-blowing just how much they've damaged our once unique ecosystem. From the irreparable damage to plant life and the massive numbers of native bird nests stripped of eggs and chicks. Yeah - cute cuddly killers. Many methods used in an attempt to control them and unfortunately the most efficient at this stage is the use of 1080. Be aware that the anti 1080 lobby generally consist of those who are also anti COVID vaccine, masks, and many other conspiracy theories. Research it with an open mind and I'm sure you'll draw a more positive conclusion. Yes, I have lifelong experience on the matter.
    After school it's very common for kiwis to have a gap year and that's so often the time we take our OE. Or Overseas Experience. We are apparently the most travelled nation/people on the planet. Hey, we live far away from the rest of the world so it's no surprise.
    When you mention that we're resourceful, l agree. Here we say we fixed/built/repaired it with a "bit of #8 wire!" That #8 wire was used on most of our fences for many many years and became very handy for repairs etc. It's now a metaphor for DIY tasks etc. I imagine that back home you'd say "fix it with duct/duck tape."
    Sorry for the long winded comment but l hope they help a little.💖👍🏻🇳🇿

In 1080 dropped areas rats and mice numbers are high and native life is often very low ,in areas with 10 years of 1080 bird life is almost gone completely , as a hunter i have seen this first hand but im sure you have read something different from our oh so honest gov, just talk to some of our kiwi hunters who actually spend time in these areas, but im sure you would say they are just more lunatic conspiracy theorist too, clown man

      It is still worth having some private health insurance, especially with kids, if they need to see a paediatrician for checking up on learning disabilities or social issues, being able to go private helps a lot. Some of those long term genetic issues can be quite damaging to a kids development when not picked up early, things like dyslexia, anxiety disorders etc.
      The trick is to have some private health insurance and hope you never have to use it.

Like what the hell, is that normal? Growing up in nz i was getting smashed all the time hurting myself in and out of the doctors, i cant ever remember paying though? . . . Australians do pay for visiting their GP’s. Remember that annoying compulsory 3% extra tax everyone pays over and above your income tax. Yeah right! That’s what pays for your doctors fees regardless of whether you EVER go to a doctors or not.
      Total rip off, I never once had the need to visit a doctors during the 8 years l worked in Australia.
      Oh and the chemists are a rip off as well. My daughter took her infant Aussie son to the doctors, then to the chemist with his prescription- $84 dollars later.
      NZ was $6 for a prescription - how prescriptions are 100% free.

    Something is better than nothing BUT NZ maternal care is not as good as it used to (and should) be. About thirty? years ago, the government started kicking women and babies out within twenty four (24) hours of giving birth. My mother gave birth to my brothers and me from 1962-73. She was NOT kicked out of Levin Maternity Hospital but was allowed to stay there for several days. Our maternal care system used to be roughly analogous to that of France.
    The current system is demonstrably inadequate and reportedly (no surprise) increases public health costs, due to the poor postnatal care provided by our health system, in the first week of a child’s life, both to baby and mother.

    --
    so why is US maternal mortality higher ?
    More women are having children later in life and more women are entering pregnancy with chronic conditions such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The rising number of Cesarean sections - a major surgery that is not always necessary - is also believed to be a contributor.

      As a 44 year old animal loving NZer, I dont think I could ever hurt a possum... yeah their 'pests', but hey they are living creatures.
      Every Summer here in the Waikato we have a few that take up residence in our fence line pine trees, and you can hear them walking over the houses roof to get from one tree to the other, they love our avocado trees (we cant really eat them so hey at least they get some use). One year I saw what I thought was my black cat run along the ground then up a nearby tree at dusk, called it it didnt come, so i walked over to it talking to them and once i got to within 2 foot of them sitting on the branch realized it was a young black possum staring wide eyed face to face with me lol. I backed off and left it alone (damn thing looked terrified)... although weeks latter I was standing again at dusk on our path when a black shape ran past me, and i jumped a good 4 foot straight up in fright lol... was the same possum.
      Our cats are often curious of them but they dont go for em (most possums are almost they same size as a house cat), although one of ours chased one up a tree at night 5 years or so back, which woke me up with their hideous warning scream they do.

      @pianoman4967 Рік тому

      @@NZBigfoot Please be aware that those cuddly 'living creatures' we call possums, kill countless hatchlings and eat any bird eggs they find. In the bush region in which l live in the south, the native Mohua, aka Yellowhead, was last been seen here 4 years ago. The 3 living creatures that share in this near extinction are the imported possum, the imported feral cat and the seasonal migrating long-tail cuckoo. By numbers the possum is the greatest continued threat to our native and endemic flora and fauna. (Plants & animals.) The possums and cats can be trapped humanely.
      Not meaning to make too much of a point about your "living creatures" phrase, but if for example you have a cat, do you muzzle it so that the rats and mice aren't harmed? Just points to think about, no harm sarcasm or insult intended. Thanks.
