Why did the Gossip Girl Reboot (HBO) REALLY Get Cancelled?

- After 2 short seasons, the HBO Gossip Girl Reboot is saying farewell and has been cancelled. We have....mixed feelings about this. The show wasn't an avant-garde masterpiece but we did enjoy seeing what the kids of Constance were up to!
Since the show has been (hastily) wrapped up, we talk about the reasons the show got cancelled; from financial limitations, to creator Joshua Safran's decisions, to the biggest one of all - the story choices that were made in Season 2.
Did you spend most of the second season confused as to what on earth was happening? Why did Georgina Sparks show up out of nowhere to be a crazy person? Why was Julien Calloway making the stupidest decisions? Was the Aki, Max and Audrey throuple destined to fail? What were Obie and Zoya even doing this season? Why do the writers hate Luna and Monet? Well we were just as confused as you!

My biggest problem with making kate/the teachers GG is that it takes away from the friend group. It makes Kate the main character when all the advertising showed the teens. We learn about Kates love life and her struggles and care less about the kids and their friend dynamic. You can't introduce so many characters and expect me to care about their relationship if I don't see them actually being friends. Also the acting overall was horrific. What a waste because this show could have been so good
Strong agree on all points! Making Kate Gossip Girl was a misstep from the very beginning and it only weighed the whole show.

The show would have been better if Julien, Luna & Monet were influencers (at the same level) and then they try to destroy each other whilst Zoya arise being a "woke" influencer and if we didn't know who is GG, that was the main cliffhanger of the series! Knowing who GG was from the beginning only serves for a film not a series.
The Georgina plot didn't make sense at all, was "fan service" but was so off.
This is such a good idea!!! Having Julien be a quasi-celebrity was such a weird choice and making Luna and Monet her underlings did them no favours.

It got canceled because it was absolutely terrible, lol 😆 😂! I grew up with the original series. They had no business rebooting this classic show.
The actors were mediocre at best, but the concept of the teachers being Gossip Girl and spying on underage teens was creepy. The dialogue was hot garbage and unconvincing. Thank God it's over 😅😋!
Also I enjoyed y'alls commentary as well super funny and cute😊! Forgot to add that.

Finally someone who saw the potential of Obie’s story! I really loved how you saw things and saw the logic in things. People thought Julien was selfish but she was just immature. She’s rude because she doesn’t know better. And it’s because she has no parents. And people always blame her but I’m like, this makes sense lol.
Haha I feel like I'm the only Obie apologist so glad to hear there are others out there 😊. Julien was crazy immature and it seemed like the writers didn't know what direction to take her and how the audience was supposed to see her!

Agreed, i actually hated how everyone, especially Audrey treated her like she was this privileged horrible person when she literally had to cut ties with her Dad for being a criminal leaving her to be basically an orphan. And that is also the show's fault for never handling that storyline in a meaningful way, instead just making it having an effect on her reputation instead of anything actually substantial.
And then you have Audrey who decided that she was going to make her best friend a punching ball for things she has no control over, which made NO sense. Also Julien is one of the most fleshed out characters yet they can never decide wether she is mean or nice so they just make her act stupid and this might be an unpopular opinion but I feel like she should have been more explicitely dumb. Like it should be an accepted thing in GG universe that Julien just isn't that smart and that's the reasons she acts out the way she does, it would make much more sense
I absolutely loved the og GG bc it was just unapologetically messy and that’s just what it was, they never tried to act like it wasn‘t, it being messy was their entire stick and I loved it for that

You know you have made a huge mistake with your show when you have the secret sauce with all the right ingredients (budget, fashion, setting, hot people) and you still manage to make the most boring thing ever.
Yup, there was way too much potential for how it turned out!

Overall no one knew how to act, they all sounded like they were being held hostage, Julien was supposed to be the influencer but she had no pop or pizzazz for it to be believable, Zoya was boring and too holier than thou for someone who lied from the jump, Monet and Luna should’ve been the main focus but they were also giving blah even in their strongest scenes, Obie was the worst he was so ridiculous it’s a wonder he had friends, Max deserved better than what he was given Chuck was creepy but at least he had initiative, Audrey ugh discount Blair with the personality of a wet blanket, Aki would’ve been cool if they added how he is in real life but sadly he can’t act, and lastly the teachers, the worst of the worst and the fact they tried to justify the creepiness makes me sick. The whole point of GG is we are supposed to try and figure it out too why tell us and then chose the worst people to be it!!!

I wanted to like it so bad 😩 I love the original and I was actually excited about the prospect of doing gossip girl but bringing into whatever year this currently is but it’s like a masterclass of what not to do.
And I think it’s extra frustrating because I feel you can see stuff that could have worked. Whether that’s the thread of a plot line, whether it’s some of the cast doing an okay job with meh material- I also can’t lie I love seeing more of the pretty people in nice clothes like with the original.
And honestly, the original was sometimes silly too but it has a legacy and I think rather than this show taking that baton and running a legacy of its own it just shines a light back on how much more successful the original was.
Here’s hoping most of the cast get work elsewhere and if I become a bazillionaire I’m hiring the stylist to dress me like Max
Totally! There was so much "almost" potential....like you could see the seeds of a story or a performance that would have hit it out of the park, only for it to fizzle out 😭

The thing is with the new Gossip Girl I ended up making compressions to the OG Gossip Girl with the new one the why that the kids were doing stuff older than their age was so awkward was bc they set it in the real world it seems & tried to make the characters relatable. OG GG had "kids" acting older lets be real here they did they were in full on nightclubs as teenagers for crying out loud & Chuck Bass. Enough said there. but in my opinion OG GG is a world where you would imagine what rich people are like & how they live so it's fantastical in that way & characters were not relatable at all.
that’s fair! I think where this one went wrong was that they needed to stay in that lane and let the characters remain unrelatable rich kids. I did not need to see the bits where they’re trying to “change the world” or protest injustices because it was so unbelievable and badly written. - Misan

hot take: the only reason the show got cancelled was because there were too many pretty black girls being portrayed as the main it girls. hbo loves cancelling good shows also i think the showrunners sabatoged the show with their bad writing
soya getting upset about her dad taking money for housing and that becoming a “seedy secrete storyline” was when I figured this show is totally stupidly annoying.
The writers definitely made some questionable storyline decisions smh.

From what I understand, these first two season was the equivalent of 1 of the original seasons. So for us it was 2 years, but in the time line it was like 2 semesters of crazy. They should have booted her after the first one though
That's true! Both seasons were one school year and I don't think that was a good choice tbh, made the timeline pretty ridiculous. You're right - they should've gotten rid of her after the first one.

it got cancelled because of skai jackson and DIY diane iykyk..
1. They don't potray as rich kids
2. The actor/actrees are not eye candy
it would have been so cool and relevant if Gossip Girl was some kind of surveillance/AI program and not the most boring mediocre annoying cringey teacher????????
They tried to make things more modern but I don't think they leaned in all the way tbh. Even using Tik Tok would have felt more realistic as opposed to IG IMO.

I'm one of the few fans that had no gripes about the show. I'm relieved to know they were at least offered a season 3 with a lower budget but come on the big budget was defs part of its appeal.
Yes the writing was a hot mess but also thats wat made it interesting lol. OG gossip girl also had bad acting and stupid story likes too so 🤷♀

They tried it, I never watched it,but it looked trashy at best, these characters looked like trashy people who were picked up off the streets and were given uniforms to wear, the original Gossip girls screamed old money ,the new one looks like it was sponsored by someone who just got rich and still had their trashy image and decided to display it on screen,the original came on when I was highschool,so I am not tripping

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I actually loved the reboot and I think that it made sense they just went to slow with the first season and I think they should have had Monet take over mid way through season 1.
In terms of Kate being Gossip Girl i liked the story she just was too soft, and was over thinking it. but I like the overall story arc of season 2 and how she basically got drunk power.
And then I would have loved to see the next season someone take over and it be anonymous and that's how Gossip Girl got started again. And it opens up a whole nother story line to see Kate going through jail i didn't hate it i just think they shouldn't have waited as long to let things unfold. Josh himself even knew he went to slow with the story telling.
I would have loved to see what they did with season 3.
Obviously season 2 was better then season 1.
I agree - season 1 was too slow and the gap between the season seemed to go on forever. With faster pacing and tighter releases it could have definitely been stronger.
