That works because it dissolves the sulfur deposits from the fuel on the sending unit. However, the wire on the potentiometer is corroded by the sulfur and eventually will fail, so the Techron fix will not be permanent. I found this out on my C6 and had to have the dealer drop both tanks to replace the sender.
But if it buys you time before replacement, it still can save money because over the car's lifetime it may only need 2 instead of 3, or if it gets crashed you may never have to pay it.
John Ross, I actually used the Chevron techron complete fuel system in my daughter's car because of this video. Before using this, her fuel gauge went from working intermittently to just staying on 'E' at all times. I ran two bottles over the course of a tank or two, and this stuff works! Not right away. It's not snake oil, but it brought back the fuel needle. It just kept improving until finally working all the time as it should. She doesn't drive a Vette, much to her she grin, but it is a GM product. Thank you!
I was told that Chever-Lay bought a Porsche 928 and took it apart before they designed the C5. According to them, they fixed all the shortcomings of the 928. Yet: 1. You can change the clutch on a manual transmission 928 in less than one hour, due to the telescoping torque shaft. That C5 requires the entire drivetrain to be removed... 2. You can change out the fuel pump and filter on a 928 in less than one hour, since the lupolen fuel tank sits behind the transaxle and these parts are behind a cover that is easily removed. Again, that C5 requires the entire drivetrain to be removed.... 3. It is far easier to change the timing belt on a 928 than it is to change the timing chain on that C5. Great video!
I’m amazed you’ve never seen those machines before! You’d really freak out with the ones we have around here attached to helicopters with ten saw blades hanging below the chopper!
That circular saw on a boom tractor thingie's pretty cool =) You don't know true fear until you've seen a tree harvester with its pincer arm fitted with GIANT HYDRAULIC freakin' CHAINSAWS mounted on them for fully grabbing a tree at the thick end and just sending that hydraulically driven and hydraulically swung giant chainsaw through the tree in like one second...
I have had multiple cars with sender issues and lived the trip meter life. Although one I had to purchase a locking gas cap to make trip meter life reliable. Yes sadly some places (northwest Houston) people will syphon gas out of your car. I parked on the right side of the driveway a gas filler was on the left side next to my wife's car. This gave thieves a little protection while syphoning.
If you want to use Techron to clean fuel lines, high pressure pumps or injectors you need to flow fuel through to the engine but to clean the fuel level sensor, surely you just need to leave the additive in the tanks and slosh the stuff around a bit so lots of corners. Go drifting ?
John Ross, I ordered a couple of bottles of the Techron Complete for my daughter's '08 Pontiac G6 GT. We replaced the fuel pump about a year and a half ago. A few months ago the fuel gauge started going bonkers, and I was getting a fuel sending error code per my Autel code reader. I think the warranty is up on the pump, so I'm definitely going to give this product a try.
It did actually bring the gas gauge back to life, although not 100% of the time initially. On the 2nd tank I dumped in another bottle. Finally it would work 90% of the time. Sometimes the gauge would fall down to empty, set off the low fuel light and message of low fuel on radio display. It was definitely a noticeable difference after using the Chevron techron. @zaralilojajapaja
Great video. Glad the fix was easy . Beautiful car. I have my order in but I can not really take the car. Just wanted to support the three of you. Great You Tube content. Best of luck with it.
A guy I see at the local coffee shop has his vette outfit, including the folding corvette chairs, dialed into perfection. Oddly enough, his nickname is Corvette Bob.
I know you say there's no way those good struts on the hummer lasted 200k, but the hood struts on my dad's 05 f150 are still factory and still working at 210k in 2023. They're starting to get weak so they'll probably be replaced soon, but they've made it this long
This has happened to me twice. Just recently I wasn’t near any top teir gas stations and had to settle on cheap Kroger gas. I drove about 50-60 miles and BAM fuel gauge drops to zero! Techron to the rescue!
I can drop drive train on floor with jackstands in between 1.5 to 2 hrs... but have done it on 3 separate cars a total 0f 7 times,, so yeah you become real familiar.. btw I absolutely live this platform! own a y2k Frc that upsets hello kitty's and ZL bitchen Camaros,, not to mention street bikes and normal teslas. I don't understand the need for hood struts - when my V6 Accord needed new ones I just got a prop rod from an I4 Accord. The rod seems to also hold the hood up.
That piece of equipment that you saw along the road is called a giraffe. It trims trees away from overhead power lines. They are four wheel drive and can go just about anywhere. The cab rotates with the boom, so you end up looking straight up to the tip of the boom.
*My 2010 Ford Explorer has a capless fuel system so, I found it's not as easy to add the Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner. I tried it once and it seemed to work for a bit but, then the issue came back. I have already replaced the fuel pump which has the sensor built in and the gauge kind of works...I can only fill my fuel about 1/2 to a bit more fuel and it read semi-normal but, I'd like to get it fully fixed one day.*
There’s a special white mini-funnel for those capless systems, and it’s almost impossible to use additives without it. If your not filling well, your fuel vent valve might be toast. If it’s getting full but not reading right, a heavy dose of Techron might do the trick. Best of luck!
I have run so many bottles of techron and I still have the problem. My 03 c5 seems to prefer shell gas, but after i fill it up and drive for 30 miles or so, it goes right to E until it's at half

There is another brand that works and is much cheaper. It’s also not available at an auto parts store. The Techron only does 20 gal. And costs $ 14-18 dollars. The other brand costs about the same but does 60 gal. A much better value.

You don't really have to run two tanks through if you barely drive it. Just let that fuel sender soak in that tank full of techron"d fuel. The two tanks is more for those who drive them a lot and thus don't get enough soak time on one tank.
Just one question. has the valve seat job been done to this engine? if no you probably shoulda just did an all in one. @@sc3ku That was mentioned in a Road & Track article back in the late 1990's when the C5 was unveiled.
Correct. 2 tanks of techron is the fix for f150 as well. Over time the contaminants in the gas gum up the sending unit
Does that include a 2003 F150?
Hilarious to see JR slowly and carefully place the gas cap against the paint instead of just hanging the cord off the built in hook on the gas door 😂
That was so hilarious I had chocolate milk coming out of my nose
Came here to say that!!
Ironic for as thorough he is with car repair.
If you notice the other guy try's that when they get fuel. Then when you see the pump handle in the tank it is down.
