One of my favorite movies of this lifetime! I love everything about this movie, as I can see myself and so many others I know and love in all of the characters! All so human. All so protective and loving and strong yet with weaknesses and flaws too. Duality. We are all each of the characters in so many different ways. All of us are multi-faceted. And we are all so unique. This movie shows human nature so very well. Everytime I see it I remember all of the things I have loved about it, but it is so bittersweet.💓💜💞💜💓
So do I but where on earth can I view it without it chasing it? They never seem to show it on TV and it’s such a great film. I would have thought it would be good for Christmastime too
Im so sad. Danny Aiello left us Friday. I absolutely loved Danny Aiello Who didnt love Danny Aiello I can't find the scene where Aiello gently bends down and picks up Dreyfus character from his Limo and carries him in his arms into the family home. Dreyfus kisses him on the cheek with the love and recognition that Aiello's act of love bestows on him. Its heartbreaking and beautiful. Im crying just thinking of it.
I’ve been after the part of Renata and Sam’s wedding scene which includes the Maypole dance by the Lithuanian dancers. They really seem to be having a good time as they swirl around the Maypole, quickly switching partners. That really is the only thing I like about this movie, seriously. I mean, really, basically after Rod comes right out and tells Renata he never did have any intention of proposing to her and thereby dumps her(thereby leaving her crushed and lovesick), things go from bad to worse, slowly but quickly as Renata takes that job selling condos (showing very little interest in), meets Sam in the process and because she’s more in “the mood for love than work,” she quits her “hateful” new job and Sam turns her family off at once with his kind of nature. Like Dad Joe even comes right out and tells Mom Marilyn,”No, Marilyn, Jan has a very good point; Sam does not have to take advantage of our hospitality the way he does! I am SICK AND TIRED of waking up to a house with secondhand smoke in the air and glasses half full of Scotch strewn around the house! I am SICK of it! SICK, SICK, SICK!” Not to mention other things Sam and Renata make overly big deals over-at the dinner where Joe sings the memorial for his deceased mother in Italian, Sam positively insists on doing the same for HIS deceased mother in Lithuanian(which is the downright inappropriate time and place to do this), and when their daughter is born the way they make an absolute mountain out of.a molehill when it comes to setting the baptism date, all because of some Lithuanian church tradition, so Sam claims, that he knows his deceased parents would be proud of. And while Renata at first has opened her eyes to how her husband has caused things to deteriorate in her family, when it comes to Sam being positively insistent on that date for their daughters baptism, WHAMMO!-she goes back to siding with ol’ Sam.
I mean, it is sad what happens to Sam out of the blue at their daughters baptism, when he suddenly takes a heart attack and passes away not long afterwards, don’t get me wrong, but still, as the brief summary on the theatrical release poster had said,”The Bella’s were one happy family. That is, until Renata met SAM...”
Love this movie. Still my favorite. I recall when production brought clothes to cleaners. Greatest movie filmed in Boston-Medford-Arlington Massachusetts
One of my favorite movies of all time! I recommend it to everyone. Growing up in an Italian family, so many things resonate. But anyone who enjoys a great romantic comedy/drama ... all about love and family ... will love this movie!
Love this film...Renata was in many ways the classic extroverted HSP (highly sensitive person)...those are often the most missed HSPs...Renata had fire, a hot temper, and was charismatic, but also had a huge heart of gold and a deep sensitivity.
In some ways, she reminds me of Laverne from Laverne and Shirley, in terms of what you just described-HSP(highly sensitive person), yet also someone with a heart of gold. In the respect that her boyfriend Rob comes right out and tells her he never was going to propose to her(has”no desire to marry her”), while she’s “so lovesick, so in the mood for love,”(and this is why she’s left so overwhelmingly crushed), something like Laverne had often ended up feeling many a time on Laverne and Shirley, it seemed. And Jan, who gets happily married as the movie begins, might remind you of Laverne’s roommate and sisterly best friend Shirley, the way Shirley has even been like a “blood sister” to Laverne, always full of savvy advice for her roommate and best friend(like when Renata has first met Sam and brings him home to introduce him to the family and he instantly turns them all off, in particular Dad Joe AND sister Jan. The way Jan even comes right out and tells Renata,”I think you should take it easy,” when Jan says “Who is this guy?” and Renata:(all bubbly):”My new boyfriend.” Jan:”You’re putting me on, Renata, this has GOT to be a joke,” then the way the relationship of the two Bella sisters gets strained as Jan is like “Come on, Renata! I mean, you hardly even KNOW the guy! You’re REALLY starting to get CRAZY, Renata! You have NO idea what you’re letting yourself IN FOR! I know you’re in the mood for love, but this is absolutely ridiculous!” Renata:”Oh, why don’t you just PISS OFF, Jan?! Sam makes me happy and that’s what counts! So there!” Jan:”OK, Renata! You win! Go ahead and risk getting hurt for all you know and for all I care! See if I care! I’m just sorry I bothered to go on my honeymoon instead of staying home to nurse your little broken heart after you broke up with Rob!” Again, something like your typical Laverne and Shirley squabble, after Shirley might try to reason with Laverne after Laverne had been heartbroken.
This film is just wonderful. I saw it many years ago when it first came out on video over here in the UK. I remember renting it at the local video store and ever since it has been my favourite romantic film followed by Love Actually. This film has everything in it and Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss blend so well and I love Danny Aiello too. What more could you want?
Always liked 1:56(in the movie, during Renata’s rant with her parents over Sam):”That man means SO MUCH TO ME! This is MY ADVENTURE, Dad, and if you just plain don’t get it, well then, I’m sorry!” Stalks off to the car, then stops. “I changed my mind; I take it back! Sorry, NOT SORRY!(I’m not sorry AT ALL!) NO WAY!” And with that, her rant finally over, she turns heel and stalks to the car with her infant daughter, where Sam is waiting for her no less.
Danny Aiello's subtlest and most engaging performance ever. His pained wincing is a delight to behold. And his beautiful voice! Magical. The whole cast was splendid. Who cares if Holly Hunter couldn't do a Boston accent for the life of her--this richly emotional and ADULT movie is one that I still remember fondly. Jealousy and intense love mix it up--there are a couple of gloriously cringe-worthy moments here that are worth the price of the film. And as a sad, faded daisy next to my sister's sophisticated attractive peony, it was nice to see everyone finally fighting over Renata, and how much she is really loved. My dream spouse won't be yours, so we should cut her a very big break. She'll need it!
Sam’s passing was sad of course, but at least in the end her family did eventually have a change of heart about him(it’s plain to see as Jan also is weeping as she and Renata hug and Renata says “I had the greatest time of my life,” puts her daughter down for a nap, and as Marilyn says,”I used to get a KICK out of watching you sleep when you were that age!” she and Renata become mother and daughter again as they hug and make up.
I love this movie!! I can watch it over and over again.. It always cheers me up and also makes me cry. I guess I just have intense passions!!!!! i should have been born in the 40's!!!
Renata's biggest problem is that her Parents treated her like a Child that's why she acted so Immature. Also, The Dinner Scene was so heavy because it reminded me of a Confrontation that took place in My Family. Sam's biggest problem was that he didn't like hearing the Word "No"., he overstepped his Boundaries, and sometimes I wondered if he resented the Fact that Renata had a Family and he didn't.
“Renata had a family and Sam did not?” Well, for one thing, both of Sam’s parents are dead-considering he IS old enough to be Renata’s father and apparently he’s an only child at that. However, I can understand Renata’s resentment at feeling like she’s being treated like she’s eight years old or something. I always had mixed feelings about this movie-again, Renata’s lovesickness over being jilted by Rod(I believe is her ex boyfriends name, but if I recall correctly, she even eventually comes right out and tells him,”Frankly, I don’t care if we get married or not!” and even calls him “a spineless worm.”) Then after she meets Sam after half heartedly accepting her new job selling condos in the Caribbean, there’s the other side of it-Sam immediately manages to get on the Bellas’ bad side, thanks to his generous yet pushy nature, not to mention his exploiting their hospitality to its fullest-the one scene seen briefly here where Jan has been complaining to her parents about bozo Sam-Marilyn:”Renata doesn’t think he’s a bozo!” Joe:”No, Marilyn, Jan has a very good point here; Sam does NOT have to take advantage of our hospitality the way he does! Furthermore, I am SICK of waking up to the house strewn with glasses half full of Scotch and secondhand smoke in the air! I am SICK AND TIRED of it! Sam had better clean up his act if he wishes to continue seeing Renata!”
If you have never seen this movie....Spoiler Alert!!! A good comparison would be Love Story in terms of the rollercoaster of emotions. I hope I do not give away the ending but this is worth every minute of being glued to the screen. Saw this during the days of VHS tapes back in Nigeria when it first came out on home video and I have seen it possibly a dozen times since then. Haven't met anyone who watched and didn't come out with a multitude of emotions. Everyone in their role brought something to the table. You just couldn't help love to hate and hate to love Dreyfuss' Sam character. Will highly recommend
Take it slow!? If you in a relationship when someone older you better move your hide and enjoy every minute. Granted, no matter how old we are, we're just a blink of an eye away from taking the big nap, but as you get older that blink isn't just a quirky notion, it becomes hard fact!
Saw this movie more times then on both hands. I never get tired of it. The whole cast is FAB

Dreyfuss & Hunter...match made in heaven....Fantastic movie it is a must see
I "always" wished for them to make a 3rd film together - one where he doesn't die on her in the end.
One of my absolute favorite movies. Thanks.
I love this movie and the song "Fly me to the moon", I can see the movie again and again.
Me too!
