  • This is an old Sony Beta recording that I made of a Showtime Concert. I think it was around 1979. I just about wore out the tape trying to learn the songs. My favorite song in the concert is "Music Speaks Louder Than Words" A great group in their prime.

As I am once again moved to see Peter, Paul and Mary and hear their wonderful familiar music, I feel the need to express my personal prayer of thanks to the music and songs PP&M gifted to our world. I was just becoming a young adult during the explosion of music of the 60’s and 70’s. My tastes in music are varied and wide-ranging, but I’ve always gravitated to listening and playing acoustic guitar. Therefore, more than any other acoustic group, the angelic harmonies, musicianship, and professional presence PP&M always brought to their performances touched my music heart like no other. Their music has been a significant influence on the 60+ years of my life where I have enjoyed singing, writing songs, and performing. Time has passed; I am getting older; Mary has left us - but like an enduring hologram, those four people (don’t forget their wonderful bass player, Dick Kniss, also deceased) and their music remains in a sacred place in my soul - for which I will always be grateful.

The third time I had a chance to see them was at a benefit at a winery in Los Gatos, CA. I could not make that one and I never got another chance to see them again. Love how Mary sings out “JUSTICE!” in ‘If I Had a Hammer. They’re one of the few groups who practiced what they preached in their music. If they believed in a cause, they gave no consideration if it might harm record sales or cause death threats (which both indeed did happen). They never got tired of singing “the same songs”, like other performers complain about doing. It’s because their songs had meaning - not always political, but always relevant to the human experience. Mary’s voice is sorely missed - both literally and figuratively.

And then what about all the other folkies who never got as successful as PPM, so there are no recordings and films of their early years. And yes, I'd love to hear the birth pangs of rock 'n roll, Elvis in the 1950s.

I saw them from their early days at Carnegie Hall and at Civil Right Marches all the way into the 2006. I went to Mary’s Memorial
I miss her and the guys

What makes me sad in the old videos is seeing all the young men in the audience who went on to eternity because of the Vietnam War...they never saw it coming...

Thank you for sharing this! Yes, the video and audio show limitations of the tech available to you at the time; I know, because I had to use the same. Perhaps computer editing could reduce static, but might take more time than the described multi-track recording of comedy song sound effects. So thanks for sharing what otherwise would not be seen, because no one wants to spend that much time on it. (Perhaps an original exists in Showtime archives somewhere?) Where was the concert?
