I found your results to be rather unexpected until I read this description of how you did the tests. Indeed, there is a massive difference between static and moving results. I have yet to encounter overheating in real-world use. The big question that so far nobody has tested for is, is the cage heat insulating or heat dissipating? The presence of a sensor to determine whether the case is fitted or not indicates that it's mainly an insulator so the camera is allowed to run hotter - but long term, is this good for the camera? I've requested the cage but I probably won't use it - I already have a Ulanzi metal cage and that should provide physical protection, perhaps together with increased heat dissipation. [Edit - Tests by another reviewer have shown that the case itself only has a marginal effect on record times. It's primarily an insulator rather than a dissipator. The longer record times are obtained because the case has a magnet incorporated in it, which is sensed by the camera, and the camera then does not shut off at the original cutoff temperature, but at a higher temperature, and so it goes for longer. The case prevents you from getting your fingers burned from the extra-hot camera. (You can simply use a magnet on its own to get the longer running times, but at risk of finger damage. Substitute the case for the magnet, and in some circumstances the case actually reduces running times compared with just the magnet). ]
It is good to know before I almost order one. This is a Huge Problem for an action camera even the company tried to solve it with a case. For those who has not pull the trigger, this is unacceptable. Thank you for your info.
Thank you for sharing the good news! Action 2 is a great action camera but of course like every other gear comes with its cons. Luckily DJI made an effort to try and fix it.
Now with this fix, would you prefer action 2 vs the action 3? they have same spec when it comes to video quality. Would the Action 2 connected to the screen module beat the action 3 w/ battery life? If so, i guess the only neg on the action2 is that you can only record w/ internal memory when connected to screen module.
Gracias
Sorry, I can't remember if I properly tested 120fps....it will overheat for sure but 120fps is meant to be used for short video clips, or at least that's how most people use it, including myself.
@@OttoJulian_ yes, it’s short, got one action 2 and did some testing myself. But find out that SmallRig have this cage for the action 2 which allow the action 2 to record for longer, really useful.
i wonder whats the science behind it. can a plastic case absorb heat? wouldnt it trap more heat than it can absorb? did you test the device during the day without casing vs at night with casing?
yeah that's an interesting question, and DJI's principle is the following: "The DJI Action 2 Camera Unit is made of metal material for fast heat dissipation of internal components, causing it to feel hot to the touch after long recording times. DJI Action 2 has a built-in temperature threshold system that automatically sends a prompt and stops recording when the camera temperature reaches a set value. The Magnetic Protective Case is made of a heat-resistant polymer to make the Camera Unit less restricted by temperature, allowing extended recording times under normal conditions." Futhermore, all my tests were done in a somehow controlled environment during the afternoon at 23-24 degrees (Celsius). No direct sunlight on the camera at any point either.
Wonder if having the battery unit connected means when its filming it also generates heat from the camera charging at the same time, maybe dji could in a software update stop camera from charging until its low on power or give users the ability to set a level at which charging should begin.
Thanks Otto, informative on the latest updates and news. Now existing and new DJI owners and soon to be can look forward to know these awesome devices arent neglected but being look after. *liked the video*
Thanks very helpful. How do you find the action 2 for interior work - I want to take some clips in Restaurants and Bars with a moderate amount of light.
hello Mark, small cameras like this one are not great for low light, but overall could work fine. stabilization is not going to be very good on low light situations as well because of the electronic stabilization system that they have
Well at least DJI is trying to solve the problem I just bought a insta360 go 2 and I can barely get 5 to 10 minutes of record time out of it without it overheating unless I have the air conditioner directly blowing on and the battery life if it makes it past the 5 to 10 minutes cuts out at about 15 to 20 minutes 😒
Yeah you are right. The Action 3 is out and I prefer the 3 over the Action 2. So sorry to hear about the Go2. Never had or tested that camera so I had no idea it would overheat so fast
Hello, after seeing your video about the case and I have been worried about damaging my DJI action 2 I ordered my case and some other stuff from DJI! Let me tell you that DJI is the WORST company! I will never buy another item from them, there support is very bad. almost 1 month I have been waiting for them to get back to me! They cant even get back to and let me know why they wont replace my lost DJI or they if they will. All i get was I will get a call in 24hrs- 48 hrs with no calls or email. I love the camera it was working great and you know the old saying! if it's not broke dont fix it. Here is my problem, I got my case and fitted it to my camera. I installed it under my setpost upside down. I pulled on it to make sure it was in place and wouldnt fall off or get jarred off. without the case it never came off on the bumpiest part of my ride and this part of the ride broke my gopro snap mount but left the DJI ACTION 2 in place for 20 rides. With the new case mounted and my first ride I checked the camera and it was still there, so I felt real good about it but then 3/4 of the ride I took a break and was shocked to see that the camera was missing but the case was still locked in place. This is a design flaw of the course it could hook into the mount but for what reason I cant tell you, maybe because it was upside down the camera slipped out the case and was gone. I back tracked for 1 hour but either I didnt go far enough or someone had found it and made it there own. 30 days later and the case is still mounted to my bike it wont come off try as I might to pull it off. I have tried to call DJI but there listed phone # in the app is always busy! online support they keep telling me that I'm in the wrong area even tho I went to the website and they opened up the chat box. 8 times I've asked for help and everytime I have to give them the same info over and over again with them telling me that someone will get back to me in 24hrs - 48 hrs, no phone call no email. I WISH I NEVER SEEN YOUR VIDEO , about the case. It would have been better to damage it since I have the 2 year care package. So now I'm out $1000 DJI ACTION 2 camera and package!
I'm impressed that your camera fell of the case, I always test this kind of things (even thought the video was not about that) since I have a hard time trusting all these magnetic stuff that they are putting on many devices, not just DJI. I'm sorry that you didn't get a quick response, I would just keep trying until they give you at least an answer.
@@OttoJulian_ I did test it but I was testing the case to see if it would come out and it wont and I'm a strong guy. the problem is that the case it was in didnt have anything holding it in place to stop it from slipping out the bottom. So it's gone and it's been over 1 month and they keep play games with me. today I got the call from them that was half a ring and when I answered they had already hung up on me. The phone number they called from has been busy for 3 hours with out even ringing! BAD BAD COMPANY!
It's a matter of heat dissipation difference without case it relies solely on convection (air) while with the case it relies on both conduction (transfers heat to mass of case) + convection.
I just purchased this and I tried it this morning. The camera stopped recording at 13 min while walking my dogs outside. The setting were 2.7 k at 60 fps
interesting. There are so many factors that will make the camera stop recording in X amount of time. Europeans cannot change the temperature level to high to allow for longer recordings. Outside temperature, direct sunlight, stabilization on/off, screen time during recording, etc, are examples of those factors involved
@@OttoJulian_ I'm having heat issues, but I'm in the UK so cannot use the "High" auto-off temperature setting. DJI claim they have no data for "Normal" mode, so I've been doing my own testing. In every scenario I've run, enabling any kind of stabilisation reduces the recording time yet your figures show they increase it. That's not what I'm seeing with the two units I've had, and test conditions have been the same for every sample.
For me, the case does not help. The camera recognises it, but I get the same recording lenghts. E.g.: 4K60 Rock Steady with the front screen module is between 10-11 minutes, with or without the case. Yes, I updated the firmware to the version 01.03.30.20. Hight temperature treshold setting is not available. I swear I had better results when I sticked some heatsinks to the camera.
Hi there. I’m sorry to hear that. I’m guessing that you are on Europe where, as far as I know, you can’t set the temp to high. Did you get those numbers while the camera was sitting still or was the camera moving around?
Ok I see. One hour to cool down is not quite a lot, but anyway, I’d give it another try but if you are having the camera sit still then there is no point on using rocksteady. Now, if you use rocksteady, use the camera as you would normally do, for example walking outdoors. When the camera is moving it will help in cooling itself a bit more. Not going to be a big difference but there should be some improvement.
@@OttoJulian_ It is true that a 12cm fan, pointed at the camera, can mean a lot. I will use it as a hrlmet cam when I ride my bike, and usually I don't turn it off when I stop for a drink. Maybe, I will have to do so. But first, I will have to start using my bike. This year was not so ideal to do so so far :)
I recently bought Dji action 2 but I found the power button on camera unit is hard when compared to button on power module… just want to know if it is just my unit or common in all Dji action 2…
why would it be impossible? there is always a reason. Take the new GO3 as an example. Would you say it's impossible that recording at 2.7K you get more battery life and can record for double the time than recording at 1440p using Freeframe? Well, it's a fact, you can watch my review on that too
@@OttoJulian_ Thank you for the information. I was hesitant on purchasing them without knowing. The only other question I have is if you noticed anymore issues with the stabilization software glitching due to more space between the two lenses?
I noticed that with mine the magnetic case (attached to the camera)does not much. But when the camera(even without the case) is attached to the screen module(the module is with the magnetic case), then it takes 3x more time to overheat. I still don't get it why
That’s interesting and I think it’s due to the heat going to the module first and the case on the module helps, but yeah, it’s weird that it takes longer vs having also the case on the main camera. I never tested it this way, will probably do
That’s no good. Are you thinking to replace it with another Action 2? They are going to release the Action 3 very soon. Form factor as their first action camera
@@OttoJulian_ i think I will stay away from DJI, their quality control is not that great. Had some issues with their drones in the past with bad gimbals . At least in action cameras there are better alternatives
Hi bro, Nice video, before few days I buy dji action 2 camera I have some issues like it's 4k30 fps shooting only less then 5 to 6 min same 2.7k 30fps after heat or stop, and 1080p 60fps 7 to 8 min after heat Only 1080p 30fps power reserve mode it's recording continue 40min I saw ur video I show result it's completely different ,do u think my camera some problem? It's only 7 days before I buy it please tell me wht I do . Even firmware also latest updated I use only camera unit not add power module and I use magnetic case also.
hello! Having a high quality and FAST SD card helps in a big way. I wasn't aware about it when I published the videos because I never use slow cards. So that can be one of the reasons you are getting low times, but at the same time this camera just had many issues as far as I could tell from other people talking to me about it. For me it was fine, I was able to get those times shown but the module most of the time was pretty hot. Something else is I think that in Europe and some other places you can't set the "high temp" option. If you can I'd recommend you to return it and get the Action 3 or the Action 4
Brother I return done my dji action 2 now I buy action 3 but repack mean it's come with 8 months dji warranty I want ask u if old version I buy so have focus issue? I saw in videos after updating focus issue no more. Mean if I buy old version or update latest firmware so focus issue fix mean no more focus issue? Please suggest me cos my budget not much so I buy repack one it's new also 8 months dji warranty also.
Good thing. I never had those focus issues but my unit was bought after the release. You should be fine. If it has warranty you are going to be safe to test it out yourself
just got mine and tested...but there is some noise coming for the clip lock i guess when recording mounted on car windscreen on uneven road, which i dont hv the issue when without the case on..
Which memory card you use that you can record for 1:45 minutes at 4K quality? Because when i use SD card after 2 or 3 minutes the camera will stop recording and said the SD card is to slow
Sorry, but for me the Magnetic Case does not give any benefit in recording time at all. I live in Europe and I have only Standard Temperature mode. Action 2 Power Combo. Firmware: 01.03.30.20. I just did two indoor recording tests (temp 24° C) at 4K@120 and RockSteady stabilization: WITH Magnetic Case + Power Module: 6 min 08 sec WITHOUT Magnetic Case + Power Module: 6 min 09 sec 4K@60 WITH Magnetic Case + Power Module + RS stabilization: 8 min 38 sec Any suggestions? Thank you very much.
At 120fps it will get hot quick, and without the higher temperature mode and being indoor without any kind of wind helping it to cool down I doubt that you can get better times. Sorry
Hello Antonio. I did a video comparing the 2. It will depend on you mostly. I still like the Pocket 2 more but now that they have fixed a few things on the Action 2 I will be using it more
@@OttoJulian_ thank you Otto. Your tutorials are so helpful. Just watched it. The action 2 looks a good one too. It’s waterproof so it’s good. My fave is still the pocket 2. The pocket 3 will be released later this year I guess ;) and possibly it will have a larger sensor
Thanks for the tip, maybe I should but people usually don't record 120fps for long periods of time so, overheating will happen but at what extend do we need to record a 10 min clip at 120fps?
unfortunately even after buying the action 2 from BestBuy i still haven’t received the coupon for a free magnetic case. Dji told me that there nothing they can do and i have to purchase the case. wtf!?
that's weird, did you activate your Action 2 before April first? I would also contact Best Buy, or wait until the coupon appears on your account. BTW, you need to log in with the same email account that you activated the Action 2
@@OttoJulian_ with the case on, HD 120 Fps = 10 min, HD 30 Fps = 12 min. Room temperature 24-25 Celsius. Problem is that cool down time is longer with the case on. I'm thinking to buy some fancy radiator to stick the cam on it to cool it down :) The only thing that works without problems is time lapse. All this is happening in the Europe part of the world. If I have to record something I have my Action 1 with me. That never fail.
If you are doing action movies then that's probably why it's falling out >.< Ok, jokes aside, you might have a faulty or fake case. My camera doesn't fall off even if I hit the camera with my finger. Perhaps it gets loose over time? I know that if the case has sustained damage then it will not hold the camera as when the case is new

The only other question I have is if you noticed anymore issues with the stabilization software glitching due to more space between the two lenses?
I bought it in January 10 , 2024 in India with dual screen module but they did not provide the case. What can I do?
talk to your seller, otherwise contact DJI directly
What's that second module
battery or screen/battery module
I noticed that with mine the magnetic case (attached to the camera)does not much. But when the camera(even without the case) is attached to the screen module(the module is with the magnetic case), then it takes 3x more time to overheat. I still don't get it why
That’s interesting and I think it’s due to the heat going to the module first and the case on the module helps, but yeah, it’s weird that it takes longer vs having also the case on the main camera. I never tested it this way, will probably do
@@OttoJulian_ i think i got a very faulty unit though, image stabilisation is non existent as well. Shipping it back to DJI
Hi bro,
Nice video, before few days I buy dji action 2 camera I have some issues like it's 4k30 fps shooting only less then 5 to 6 min same 2.7k 30fps after heat or stop, and 1080p 60fps 7 to 8 min after heat
Only 1080p 30fps power reserve mode it's recording continue 40min
I saw ur video I show result it's completely different ,do u think my camera some problem? It's only 7 days before I buy it please tell me wht I do .
Even firmware also latest updated
I use only camera unit not add power module and I use magnetic case also.
@@OttoJulian_ thx brother if possible I'll really get action 3
Brother I return done my dji action 2 now I buy action 3 but repack mean it's come with 8 months dji warranty I want ask u if old version I buy so have focus issue?
I saw in videos after updating focus issue no more.
Mean if I buy old version or update latest firmware so focus issue fix mean no more focus issue?
Please suggest me cos my budget not much so I buy repack one it's new also 8 months dji warranty also.
Good thing. I never had those focus issues but my unit was bought after the release. You should be fine. If it has warranty you are going to be safe to test it out yourself
Thank you for this important video, great test and great info.
I'm glad it was helpful! Thanks
just got mine and tested...but there is some noise coming for the clip lock i guess when recording mounted on car windscreen on uneven road, which i dont hv the issue when without the case on..
are you using the battery attachment (the one at the bottom without the screen?)
@@OttoJulian_ yup, dual. screen... car moving... produce those tik tik tik sound... no issue if without the case on.
That’s interesting, will test it myself in the following days. I sure didn’t test it under those moving conditions
Great and now it don't fit in the carry case and you can't use the macro lens with the heat case on, dji can go truck themselves
What carrying case are you using ?
@@OttoJulian_
The sunnylife case, it was perfect for out and about. But now the action 2 can't fit in it with the heat case on,
Which memory card you use that you can record for 1:45 minutes at 4K quality? Because when i use SD card after 2 or 3 minutes the camera will stop recording and said the SD card is to slow
I use this ones: amzn.to/3t98dJt Make sure you buy them from a trusted source, there are lots of fake ones everywhere
Quick question are you doing a review on the Insta 360 one r/s
hello! I'm not so sure right now
@@OttoJulian_ ok sir thank you for getting back to me thank you 😊
You are welcome
Do the Action 2 ND Filters fit on the new protective case? I cant find anyone that has mentioned if the case is compatible with ND. filters.
They do fit, but if you shake the camera hard enough it will fall off (tested with freewell ND filters)
@@OttoJulian_ Thanks mate. Might be a good video for you to show how the ND Filters fit on the protective case.

Thanks otto, good analysis
Thank you Vincent!!
I was worried about this Issue, I found a cheap one on an Amazon deal. In my case I am going to be recording at 1080p so I don't see a major problem.
at 1080 you will not have any issues :)
Sorry, but for me the Magnetic Case does not give any benefit in recording time at all. I live in Europe and I have only Standard Temperature mode. Action 2 Power Combo. Firmware: 01.03.30.20. I just did two indoor recording tests (temp 24° C) at 4K@120 and RockSteady stabilization:
WITH Magnetic Case + Power Module: 6 min 08 sec
WITHOUT Magnetic Case + Power Module: 6 min 09 sec
4K@60 WITH Magnetic Case + Power Module + RS stabilization: 8 min 38 sec
Any suggestions? Thank you very much.
At 120fps it will get hot quick, and without the higher temperature mode and being indoor without any kind of wind helping it to cool down I doubt that you can get better times. Sorry
Is the action 2 better than the pocket 2 Otto? 😄
Hello Antonio. I did a video comparing the 2. It will depend on you mostly. I still like the Pocket 2 more but now that they have fixed a few things on the Action 2 I will be using it more
@@OttoJulian_ thank you Otto. Pocket 2 still my fave. I’ll look forward to your video with the action 2 anyway. 😁😁😁
I’m hoping for the new pocket 3 to come out this year. The Pocket 2 vs Action 2 has been out already
DJI POCKET 2 VS DJI ACTION 2: Which One is Worth Your Money?

@@OttoJulian_ thank you Otto. Your tutorials are so helpful. Just watched it. The action 2 looks a good one too. It’s waterproof so it’s good. My fave is still the pocket 2. The pocket 3 will be released later this year I guess ;) and possibly it will have a larger sensor
Great.tnx man.
sure!
Good video. You should have tested 4k 120fps
Thanks for the tip, maybe I should but people usually don't record 120fps for long periods of time so, overheating will happen but at what extend do we need to record a 10 min clip at 120fps?
Amazing! Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
Finally.. time for me to order one
Sounds good !!
unfortunately even after buying the action 2 from BestBuy i still haven’t received the coupon for a free magnetic case. Dji told me that there nothing they can do and i have to purchase the case. wtf!?
that's weird, did you activate your Action 2 before April first? I would also contact Best Buy, or wait until the coupon appears on your account. BTW, you need to log in with the same email account that you activated the Action 2
I today contacted chat support online and within 20min I received a code. I’m way out of the timeframe. I’m impressed.
The free case is still not available in India. :-(
Thanks for making the Video Otto.
I hope it gets available soon !
awesome, thank you.
You're welcome!
the case does not help with the overheat issue. Got it today, tested it, makes no difference.
It does make a difference. You think I came up with the results from thin air?
@@OttoJulian_ with the case on, HD 120 Fps = 10 min, HD 30 Fps = 12 min. Room temperature 24-25 Celsius. Problem is that cool down time is longer with the case on. I'm thinking to buy some fancy radiator to stick the cam on it to cool it down :) The only thing that works without problems is time lapse. All this is happening in the Europe part of the world. If I have to record something I have my Action 1 with me. That never fail.
I guess this case is useless underwater when using a dive sealed case. Did anyone test the 4k@120 while diving?
not sure since I haven't used a diving case, but I'm assuming they are not compatible
Thank you
Hello Kevin!! Thank you !!
oh my God
omg, ok
great news!!! thx
You bet! Thanks for watching!
Good Job 💪💪💪
Hello Virginia!! Thank you !!
Just don’t buy action 2 and wait for action 3. lol
that's a good point! :)
Hi, I love ur videos. but u got to be kidding me? how could u record 4k 24fps for 41mins with 22GB internal memory? any thing wrong?
thanks for your feedback! not quite sure about your 41min question? (Sorry)
eggggggcellent!!
thank you for watching!
Sorry but this camera is a Joke itself. The DJI Osmo Action was much better. Why they went two steps back?
hello Berlin, it's an ok camera, not superb, but not that bad. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Excellent concept but it is a poor solution to a crappy and poorly executed product.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
Terrible case. It's badly designed because the camera falls out of the case VERY EASILY.
If you are doing action movies then that's probably why it's falling out >.<
Ok, jokes aside, you might have a faulty or fake case. My camera doesn't fall off even if I hit the camera with my finger. Perhaps it gets loose over time? I know that if the case has sustained damage then it will not hold the camera as when the case is new
