I returned a go pro 10 for an action 2 and don’t regret it!
A tip: you can leave the 2 modules together and just plug in a USB c cord to the bottom module, then copy all the files from the internal storage or SD card to your computer. It’s much faster than transferring the internal files to the sd card.

The GPro 11 is coming soon. Also the insta 360 oneRs and its mods look pretty damn awesome and incredible versatile.
Connected mine to computer with a usb-c lead & videos wouldn’t open, battery life is terrible. When one of the memory storages fills up it stops filming, why can’t it switch to available memory. Getting a lot of lost connection during downloading to devices.
I’ve had the Action 2 for more than 4 months and very happy with it except two things which I knew about before I purchased (and had slowed my purchase decision) the those are (1) not enough internal memory and (2) battery life of the camera module. These are obvious issues though. I’ve never had any overheat and all may use is very long video takes of action video from on my gravel bike, MTB and on the road.
What I love is the form factor (for my use GoPro is too big as was the Osmo Action). The video quality is excellent and the rock steady even better than I expected. The built quality is very high end and the controls and options give great usability. Many accessories are coming being released.
The reason I need the small form factor is for criterium bicycle racing. There can be a lot of action in these races, very fast on the edge racing and the bikes are aero and light. Everything is minimalist and about absolute speed. You can’t afford a big, chunky GoPro on you crit racing bike. Most races are 45-55 minutes so this is where the problem is if it gets close to an hour the battery will be flat and even running 1080P you cant get a lot more than 50 minutes. The video from the racing is great and I can live with 1080P for this action but on the longer races your going to not fit in the end of the race. Turn the camera on at the start line and that’s the last chance yo7 can touch it as your head down racing at heart rate 160-190 BPM for the next 45-50 minutes.
One thing I’ve been able to do for longer rides that are not races is shoot in interval mode. For example A photo every second and that takes a long time to fill the onboard memory. These might be 3-4 hour rides. But what about battery for that time? Well I have one of those high quality Tilta cages.
The Tilta cage has its own magnetic mount so clips under my handlebar but the great thing about the Tilta cage is that it has built in USB C charger. Instead of having to charge from the clip on battery unit you can charge through USB C direct to the camera module. So for long battery use I have a short 10cm USB C cable running to a small power bank on a rubber mount under my bikes handle bar it’s still very aero as it mounted up flush out of the way with the short 10cm USB cable running the power straight into the Action 2 camera module via the Tilta cage.
It’s still discrete and out of the way so power is no longer a problem. But video is still limited to the small internal memory. Why could it not haven been 64GB or 128GB? On a multi hour ride there is no time to stop and offload video. So with this set up I’m limited to Timelapse with with interval photos up to running up to 5hrs.

I run an action 2 on two of my fpv drones where weight is a huge consideration. It's half the weight of a GoPro 10 so I get considerably longer flight times and improved handling. Plus the image quality is excellent and you have a log file option if you like doing your own color grading.
I just got an action 2, it's excellent for some behind the scenes, the medallion mounting is so convenient... in professional shoots these cameras are used as toys for 3rd or 4th angles, and having the integrated battery is way better than having spare batteries cluttering the camera bags

For your screen protector, do you recommend putting one on the main camera? I plan to use ND filters on it, so I was concerned about the image quality by putting the screen protector on it. On the other hand, it would be good to protect the front screen.

When you said the filters can be used with a magnetic system, do they require any adapter for the magnetic filters to be held in place? I think the metal case must be sufficient for use with the magnetic filters, without anything further being required to enable the magnetic filters to be held in place.

I have the dji Action 2 for fpv and I honestly really love the camera but there are 3 things I don’t like about it which is 1 the back screen is easy to crack if you crash 2 the overheating which I could care less about and 3 the battery is not swappable because I travel a lot and sometimes I forget to charge my power/screen module

I've watched/read so many reviews on this, and the overheating thing while I understand can be a problem in mounted extreme sports scenarios, I see this as a camera to take with me to make travel film-style videos. The FOV is incredible. The portability. The stuff you could do with it for creative shots and transitions. I can't dip my fujifilm into a river stream for example. Or how about if I can't afford a £2,000 Weather sealed set up but I want something to be able to use in case it starts raining heavily, or if it's dusty outside. And why don't people understand this can go into places a Mirrorless/DSLR can't, such as a shot from inside a bag or even the ease of mounting it for scenes such as when driving etc. I see people's videos on UA-cam and shots don't last more than a few seconds, for argument's sake let's say a minute. I can see how it can be very suitable in the scenarios mentioned above. Also found it for £240 on sale so it seems like a steal at that price? Thanks for your videos man!

The main unit has a non-replaceable battery is that correct? That would seem to give it a limited lifetime. And being water proof you probably cant even disassemble it? Correct me if im wrong.

I love this camera The battery is amazing and last me all day with the occasional charge I can record and entire of footage on hd and 50 mins on 4K with one charge
Only thing is when I begin to walk with the camera on rock steady or horizon it begins to flicker in the background

i’ve got one and love it. so innovative. yup, overheats but i knew before buying it. modular snap together system is genius. i use it to video flying rc model aircraft. i mount it on magnetic head band. it’s wide angle so my planes look small but i crop in video editor. excellent quality footage and v easy to use. i’ll never go back to gopro.

Thanks for the video! I have a question regarding connecting to a power bank. Will it be able to shoot very long hours of video if the main camera + power module with a 512Gb SD card is connected to a 10000 mAh power bank?
Depends on the temperature. If you use a cage to help with heat dispersion, it might work.
Yet another well balanced review with samples that can be compared with those in your other reviews - excellent. But of course I have some points to mention...
- For a protective filter perhaps a UV filter is best, as it does not have any adverse effect on EIS.
- You don't have to move the files from the internal storage to the SD card unless you are away from your base, as the internal storage can be copied direct to a PC.
- Overheating issues (and fragility issues) have recently been addressed by DJI who will be making a case available to existing and new purchasers without charge. The case appears to be designed to insulate rather than dissipate but the camera senses when it is fitted and adjusts its maximum running times accordingly.
- For me the main plus points are the two options for horizon levelling, the excellent surround sound from the built in mics, and the ability to accept digital audio sources (input and output) via the USB-C connection, which is I believe unique in the video camera world. In fact I don't think there's an audio recorder with this feature either.

@@TheHybridShooter Well, the case is heat resistant polymer - according to the review I've been watching it makes it more comfortable to hold rather than more cool - a bit like an oven glove. That's presumably why the camera detects the presence of the case, so it allows the camera to get hotter, knowing the user won't get burned. I guess we will have to wait for someone to apply proper temperature measuring instruments to it to know exactly what is going on.
@@Ozpeter I guess that "heat resistant" could mean that it won't be damaged by the heat. It think that isolating the device would be very bad for the battery. I will do some tests once it arrives.

I was just about to buy a Go 3, but remembered this and immediately bought the Action 2.
I was looking at a Go 3 too but saw this on Amazon for $200 new. I’m glad to hear others made the same choice even without the sale.
With the screen protector, have you noticed any haze on the edges of your videos/photos? I had another brand on Amazon (brand: ULBTER) and noticed it created a wavy haze on some of the edges. I noticed it initially when I did timelapse/video of water with a nice blue skyline. Then I went back to check other videos and noticed it slightly on those as well. It was amplified with the ND/CPL filters.
I know the filters apply a level of protection but if I could get a tempered glass protector as well, I'd like to. Just curious if you happen to notice anything like that with the ones you linked or not.

@@TheHybridShooter Sounds good. I'll probably just stick to using the ND/CPL filters and forgo the one for the lens because of this. I'm sure if one does it, others do as well. I have one of the filters on the camera 24/7 anyways and it stays pretty snug with the small rig cage on it too.

I don't think so. I never shoot in 1080p, but judging by 4K 25p results, 1080p should be fine.

The Insta360 modular system does mean that modules can be interchanged but you need battery, processor and lens to be present. The Action 2's camera can be used standalone.

It won't work with my Action 2 bought in Europe, because the high temperate setting is disabled.

No, it is not removable, that is too much to ask at this size, just get a Hero 10 if you need removable battery.
It is possible to change the battery in a Hero Session, I have seen a UA-cam video of someone doing that. I have a session 5 that has lasted for a very long time.

No, all of the samples are unedited. Make sure that you are using the latest FW, dynamic rage was greatly improved by FW updates.

@@robertconrad6802 No, Action 2 doesn't have quad Bayer sensor. Quad bayer sensor uses stacking to increase DR. It is just a well judged processing and relatively large sensor with good SnR for an action camera.
Thanks! The only problem i have with the camera is the wind noise and not being wide enough on the horizon lock. And of course overheating, but as you said, that is the price of the small size.

Why should you still use a gimbalcam if you got the great stabilisation of the action 2?
Many reasons - different FoV, better image quality, low light, advantages of the gimbal and so on…

This looks like a really cool camera, if you understand the normal limitations of fixed focus action cams with only digital stabilisation (meaning stabilisation depends on fast shutter speeds)
Not necessarily, there are methods of digital stabilization that are not affected by the shutter speed.

No, it isn't. These historical towns in central Europe generally look similar.
Biggest downside for me is that it wont record when cooled down to less than about 0 degree celcius. Have to heat it in my gloves etc.
Im aware of the GoPro 9/10 enduro batteries but that camera is actually too big for me since I usually just stick the camera in my mouth instead of helmet or chest mount.
Other than that I mostly like the Action 2 and will sell my GoPro 8.
I hope you're not planning to record at high frame rates/resolutions with it in your mouth, because it gets VERY hot.

It would be nice if DJI continued selling the original Osmo Action as well as the Action 2 or even better an updated version of the Osmo Action. Go Pro suck and have bigger overheating issues than DJi.

50 or 15 minutes of battery life for the main module at 4K? at 9:00 I find hard to tell. It sounds more like 50, but seems too good to be true, especially as the sentence contains "realistically"

I totally agree with you that the Action 2 is misunderstood a lot. The build quality, specs and image quality are outstanding when considering the small size. And you have mentioned a very important fact in your video: The image and video quality is very similar to the Pocket 2, which is really amazing for an action cam. Maybe they have the same or a similar sensor built in.
Thank you! Pocket 2 image quality is still level above any conventional action camera on the market, just the colors are similar. It uses very different optics and sensor.

@@SweetGear I really hope DJI don't abandon the pocket - they seem to have stopped firmware updates on the 2 despite the tracking being not as good as the 1 (according to a review I just watched). My hope would they would make a slightly larger model with a bigger sensor
There isn’t really anything to fix on P2. Worse tracking performance is caused by the angle.

If that's not a straight succesor of an OA1 then it should be called different, Osmo Nano, etc. Finally there would be no such sh*t storm ;).
I agree with that.
DJI did a very poor job of communicating the advantages of this camera and allowed the usual UA-cam misunderstandings to grow. Hopefully the camera will be in that rare breed of camera (like the Panasonic G9, the DJI Pocket) where sales increase over time as word of mouth about the camera's goodness spreads.
I agree, a lot more could have been done in that regard. The name should have been different in the first place.

@@TheHybridShooter thanks - I just watched a image comparison video better the Action 2 and the GoPro 10 - the 10 seemed to beat it in every criteria but wide view. The video was 4 months old - has there been a firmware update in the mean time that has equalled it out a bit.
@@markshirley01 If it was shot before the major A2 FW update, it is worthless. As you can see at 0:33 the image quality is very similar in the good light, Action 2 is a lot better in the low light.

Great review as usual - The disappointing aspect of these devices is their image quality is inferior to a iPhone 13. Its difficult to accept video quality less than your own phone.

I need a second action cam. And unfortunately I still can't decide witch one to buy - GoPro hero 10, the new Insta360 RS or... DJI Action 2. I'm really happy with the old Osmo Action, and I love it. So I was hopping that the new one, will be as good as the old one and even better. But some of the "features" of Action 2 just doesn't make sense for me. Hero 10 is maybe the one I will get at the end, but I really don't like to mix and match footage from different cameras.
Action 2 is definitely better than the original Osmo Action, but it is a different type of camera. If you can't decide, or you want "Osmo Action successor" Hero 10 is the safest choice.

You can get a magnetic base by ulanzi that has a usb c port so you can use a powerbank to power the camera indefinitely and is around £25 an essential bit of kit
You can power the camera indefinitely by using USB-C port on the display / power module, whilst using SD card, which makes much more sense...

No, you can’t. There is no pin connector on the bottom of the display / power module, so you can’t use it to free the USB-C on display / power module. There is just one USB-C on the ulanzi base as well, so you can either use that for charging or for the microphone.
