- The Bartini Beriev VVA-14 (Vertikal`no-Vzletayuschaya Amphibia, or Vertical Takeoff Amphibious Aircraft) was a Soviet vertical takeoff amphibious aircraft developed during the Cold War. Designed by Robert Bartini and later continued by the Beriev Design Bureau after Bartini's death, the VVA-14 was a unique and ambitious project.

The age when engineers & designers were bold & courageous.
Not vertical take off - in fact not designed to really take off at all. It was an ekranoplan, designed to skim the surface of water using ground effect.
The Soviets and later the Russians were always fond of spending a lot of iron.
STARFIELD
Defied convention. Over-priced and ultimately a total failure. One of the coolest looking machines ever.
Did it fly?
This was not a vertical take off capable aircraft.
I cringe watching sea water getting sucked into the jet engines
