@@magicpyroninja it's still a solid concept though, and it definitely beats having to carry a recoiless rifle or a bring out a tank when you can just put a recoiless rifle on a tank, although I do agree that 6 of them is a bit too much but hey that's six area clearing shots before having to reload it's literally the revolver of the tank world it's reliable, and six shots is all you need, had they further developed this concept like I can see them eventually making an advanced version of it in the near future where it would have maybe decreased the recoiless rifles from 6 to 4 and they would have given it an auto loader or at least an enclosed loading turret with a proper fire control system other than a tracer from a 50cal and maybe replaced the m1919 with an M2 to supplement the lack of the afformentioned 50 cal tracer rifle, like if it's a proven and effective concept they should further develop into it, strike the iron while it's hot because this is one of the rarer times where a farmer and grunt build actually works miraculously and it's such a shame it's just collecting dust in a museum and no other weapon comes close to its effectiveness nowadays, like this would have been the perfect weapon to lend to Ukraine considering their Russian tank outbreak, like imagine these agile fckers modernized to today's standard with advanced IR and targeting system all hiding in the bushes sniping tanks and vehicles from afar and when it's time to liberate a town proceed to use the beehive rounds and pepper the settlements with flechettes and make every drafted Russian regret not having surrendered in advanced, the battle for Ukraine would and could end earlier if these machines were further developed into something more viable as a tank destroyer and mobile artillery since this was put on a light tank it would be very mobile indeed

There is a guy in Texas with a literal wall of 106mm recoilless rifles (and not like on racks, they're stacked like wine bottles). There is also another guy in Texas who used to own a broken down M50 Ontos. Upon their meeting, the recoilless rifle guy noted that he would love to have a working Ontos. The talked and worked out a deal. If recoilless rifle man could give Ontos man 6 recoilless rifles, then he could take the Ontos home. So now recoilless rifle man has 6 less recoilless rifles and an Ontos that he got running. Dude just did a side quest to get a free tank.

I read in a first hand account of the battle of Hue, called, if memory serves "Phase Line Green: The Battle for Hue" by Nicholas Warr, USMC retired. Anywho he recounts how they had an Ontos come up, slide into a 90° turn and fire all 6 Recoilless, slam into reverse back the way they came to avoid RPGs to reload. He said it was the most epic example of "shoot and scoot" he'd ever seen.

He also mentioned that the Ontos was lightly armored so they would move a Sherman tank into the street in front of the building they were targeting and fire the machine guns at the target while an Ontos was screaming up the street... When the Ontos was in position the Sherman would move out of the way and the Ontos would fire at the target and then the Sherman would move back into position as mobile cover while the Ontos got the hell out of the area....

I almost fell off the couch when I saw Walter crouched down behind an M60 tank and the camera panned down-range just as an Ontos fired all six of the tubes at once into the hill side about a thousand yards away from where Walter was hiding from sporadic gun fire. The entire side of the hill blew up and Walter stood up with his back to the hill and said something like, "that will be the end of the sniper fire for awhile." Last one I saw was mounted on an old jeep in Pakistan, they had just completed development of a new enhanced-accuracy round with a two-stage warhead with an extended detonator-on-a-stick to defeat the then-new explosive reactive armor. Designed by Pakistani nuclear engineers. The new "very long range" projectile required a new spotting round too. Half the dispersion of the U.S. anti-armor round, and a significantly flatter trajectory!
Why? Because one of the engineers got bored working at a power plant after helping build some of Pakistan's first nuclear weapons, and someone mentioned their Army was going to get rid of the 106 recoilless rifles he used to crew, as obsolete. So he made it not-obsolete.
I am pretty sure we could have used the F* out of some Ontos in Afghanistan and Iraq.

My companion at dinner had been in Nam, and DID have an Ontos MOS. He was depressed his weapon was declared obsolete and he'd been reassigned to the Air Wing. I think he was ''short'' at that time, and I didn't ask why he was still a Corporal. A man's Page Eight [of his SRB] is his own affair.
When he talked about how cool his machine was, I was sorry I'd been assigned to Harriers and Aviation -- real Marines drove Ontos. But that was the Old Breed, the Old Corps. Before my time.

    So goes the 106...

The Marines did one even crazier stunt with bazookas/recoilless rifles.
At China Lake in the early 70s (I think) one Lieutenant Colonel Jack Pipa convinced the USMC brass to let him strap to bazookas to the wing tips of a P 51 mustang. He then proceeded to demonstrate the capability as a close air support platform.
Apparently the test was successful, but with one significant shortcoming that was overlooked in the planning, the back blast from the bazookas set fire to the tail of the Mustang - meaning that the mission could be delivered but getting home with your tail on fire could be challenging!
Had Jack been around to know the phrase “warheads on foreheads“ he would have considered that to be a perfectly reasonable price to pay for providing CAS to his beloved Marines.

When I was in, I talked to a Marine that had been on the Ontos. He said that if you fired all 6 barrels at one time but it would bend the mounts. And that is the normal way to aim a recoilless rifle - a .50 BMG that is ballistically matched to the recoilless round. You fire it, if it hits the target, you immediately fire the big one.
