  • These chairs were bought by my father way back in the year 1980. Though he is no more, he has left behind many such things, which conjure up his vivid memories. These Chairs were lying in junk since 1997 perhaps after being abandoned in favor of modern furniture. One look and I decided to get them restored, however, due to lockdown neither the material nor the carpenter was available for the proposed task. So I took it upon myself to give them a new lease of life and to relive the memories of my father. Here is my humble attempt.
Restoring an old wooden chair can be a rewarding and satisfying project. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you bring your old chair back to life:
Clean the Chair: Start by removing any dirt, dust, cobwebs, or grime from the surface of the chair. Use a soft brush or cloth to dust the chair, and if necessary, clean it with a mixture of soap and water. Let the chair dry completely before proceeding.
Sand the Chair: Use sandpaper to sand down the surface of the chair. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper and work your way to finer grits until the surface is smooth. Be sure to sand all areas, including the legs, arms, back, and seat.
Fill Holes and Cracks: If the chair has any holes or cracks, fill them with wood filler. Let the filler dry completely before sanding it down to a smooth surface.
Repair any Damaged Parts: If any parts of the chair are damaged, such as loose or broken joints, repair them. This may involve tightening screws, glueing loose parts, or replacing broken pieces with new ones.
Prime the Chair: Apply a primer to the entire chair, making sure to cover all surfaces, including the legs, arms, back, and seat. Let the primer dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Paint the Chair: Once the primer has dried, apply paint to the chair. Use a brush or roller to ensure an even coat. You can choose to paint the chair one solid color, or you can get creative and add some details with a different color. Let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Seal the Chair: To protect the paint and give the chair a smooth, polished finish, apply a clear coat of sealant. Let the sealant dry completely before using the chair again.
By following these steps, you can transform an old, junk wooden chair into a beautiful piece of furniture that you'll be proud to display in your home.
