- Police are investigating a massive fire that destroyed an elementary school in Port Coquitlam, B.C.
Hazel Trembath Elementary School was attended by roughly 250 students - all of them now wondering where they will continue their studies.
Coquitlam RCMP have deemed the fire “suspicious.”
Alissa Thibault has more on the investigation into the fire and the next steps for students, their families and teachers.

Fire and Canada go together, it’s been a bad year for B.C. Fires. Arson is a favourite pastime in BC
Yep , This is what de funding the police looks like…. And how is it that a province has No regulations regarding fire systems especially in Elementary school… Gotta love your NDP Government ❤️❤️
NDP supporters are burning everything in BC
That school was likely built when the BC Socreds were in power back in the '80s. You seem void of any real understanding so you lash out like a child angry at his parents. @@clipperprospecting8445

I like the old style, would've been cool if it had modern tech integrated within its older build. Albeit it wasn't retrofitted so, maybe you're right.@@eatmeskivys

@@DrCorvidwhat the hell does that have to do with anything?
Why on earth does an elementary school NOT have a sprinkler system?!?
Spinkler systems are meant to allow people to escape. Not save the property.
Maybe you should be going back to school.
Since when, in Canada, is a public building not equipped with a sprinkler system? Did the laws not reach there???
It was deemed more important to use 'sprinkler' funds to paint rainbows on crosswalks.
@@KayJay940If that’s the case it’s a damn good thing this didn’t happen during school hours. Smh 🤦🏻♀️
Because the school district didn’t give them one 😅
Why wouldn't a school have a sprinkler system?
No one was accountable to Health & Safety regs and it fell between the cracks.
Older buildings weren't required to have them. Do your research.
They don’t care about kids, they care about the $$$ that have to flow.
How do we have schools without sprinklers?! This is absolutely disgusting!!
School is old. Too expensive to retrofit.
Schoolbuses have no seatbelts, schools with no sprinklers.
thank goodness the fire didn’t happen during school hours without a sprinkler system
@@frankvonfrauner no, it is required by law to have automated sprinklers in schools, hospitals, and other public places and residential buildings as its part of the Building code proposed in 1998. The school would have been closed and/or fined if that were the case
A lot of school boards do not have the budget for the installation of fire suppression systems, and provincial governments will never loan the money for every school to have them installed.
Actually looks like a blessing in disguise, having a school without a functioning sprinkler system and constructed in a way that the fire continues to spread even after the arrival of firefighters was a potential for tragedy. Fortunately, there were no injuries and the school can be rebuilt to a modern standard; undoubtedly, it will be a real upheaval for the staff and students for at least the remainder of this school year, but certainly something that can be managed.
It is curious that a school was built with flammable materials. Every school I've ever been to (many in southern Ontario) have all been of brick or concrete construction.
@@shawnhuk here in BC almost every school is wood frame construction (with the usual exceptions being shops and gymnasiums), not an issue usually as interior finishings are drywall and other non flammable components.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Whoever lit the fire was doing everyone a favour, especially at night so as to not injure anyone. Best case scenario for what possibilities were laid out. I'd be celebrating
@@robertshiell887 That's actually incorrect. Most "new" public schools built after 1950 but before 2010 are concrete or cinderblock because they are built to withstand a bomb. Government buildings (schools, colleges, post offices, police stations) were bomb targets of the sons of freedom in the 1920's to 1960's, and because of "oh no nuclear bogeyman" scares. Only since 2009 have schools started being built with wood again, and those must be sprinklered.
The school in question was built in the 70's, and sprinklers were not required until 1992. For those who maybe have never went to a school in BC. There are annual fire drills, usually in the fall, and had the fire started during class time, all the students would have been evacuated before the fire spread. This was always considered "good enough" for elementary and primary schools. Many small community school buildings were shut down in the 80's and students started being bussed, sometimes an hour away to larger schools.
The reason this fire ultimately gutted the school is because it apparently started while nobody was in the building, and likely had an hour before someone saw it burning. Why it didn't have at least automatic fire alarms to alert the fire department or at least the principal or school district staff is a bit of a worry.
@@Kisai_Yuki Not sure where you live, but here in the Interior of BC all the schools that I attended were wood construction and built in the (circa.) late fifties. The latest two schools built in this area were frame construction (1980 and 2001). I’m sure surviving a nuclear strike may have been a consideration in some school districts, but here (and the adjoining districts) wood frame construction was the norm.
The heart of this school community has been taken. Hopefully the RCMP get to the bottom of it. On the flip side, the fire moved so quickly; it was a fire trap that didn’t burn any people. Let’s replace it with something safe and amazing. Warm thoughts for all who are suffering.
Agreed-Very good observation!!!!
For how much money? You think there's money for a replacement?
RCMP will never investigate liberals
I second that and agree with you 💯 🤗💖
My kids went to that school and it was such a well run school in an amazing community with some of the teachers living in the neighborhood too. They had the best Xmas concerts every year too. So many fond memories happened at that school. What a sad day for our community:(
Sure, get the RCMP on it. That will guarantee that no one will ever know what happened.
They’ll just sweep it under the rug depending on the perp, make no mistake. They’re good at covering politically incorrect attacks, just like that high jacked plane that nose dived in downtown Peterborough ON in 2016, in which the perp was a “national security person of interest”?
Absolutely ZERO accident or terrorist report resulted from it, despite the fact that he was destined to fly into Parliament, given his flight path from Toronto to Ottawa? Till this day, you can only dig up a couple of articles on it.
Why in the name of all that is holy was a freaking SCHOOL permitted to exist without a sprinkler system??!!!
As a retired teacher,my heart goes out to the whole community. For teachers, their school is their second home, and so much of what is in their classroom has been created by them, is their personal property. Their students are like their children, and the thought of someone deliberately targeting them is devastating. Thank God this happened at night. I hope they find whoever started this fire.
How do you know for sure that it was "who" started the fire? Sometimes fires start from faulty electricity or other fire hazards in the building.
@@glenfenderman because in the reporting they suggested that it was
RCMP has decided it was arson.
We don't know their reasons, yet, but they must have some.
Still, glenfenderman, you make a good point. It was mentioned the school had no sprinklers so it may have been deficient in other safety measures too.
Canadian teachers spend on average (a wide figure) between $300 and $1,000 per year on school supplies out of their own income.
@@veramae4098 for sure I did. But I know others who would make claims for petty cash all the time.
Why would a school not have a functioning sprinkler system? What if students and staff were inside?

In Greece happened in a Refugee camp , camp totalled and their school, food area
How does a school go up like that ??? Like besides how it started, "unsprinklered building"??? How are schools not "sprinklered" by law?
From my understanding sprinklers weren’t required in new schools in BC until the late 90’s and onward, and older schools that didn’t have them installed weren’t required to put them in. Even though it’s expensive, I personally think they should’ve made the older schools install sprinklers as well to avoid tragedies like this.
When I was in grade three, my school burnt down. A photo of my desk was on the front page of the newspaper. It was 40 years ago and I still remember it clearly!
It’s a shame that BC collects billions in tax revenue and can not invest in public infrastructure.
Infrastructure is so ancient many schools aren’t fire or earthquake proof, bridges are crumbling and about to collapse. Glad no one was hurt in this horrific fire.
At least nobody was killed.

Many of our schools got sprinkler systems added after the fact. Lots of the older ones had little fire proof construction however. The most important thing is to make sure the staff and students are well trained to get out when a fire/smoke is detected.
I worked all of my schools to completely empty in 90 seconds or less. Sometimes it took some practice, but after a few tries we always got there.
One of my teacher magazines (I'm retired now) said a principal decided to make a fire drill more realistic. He set off a smoke bomb in his own wastebasket; the kids smelled the smoke and went *bonkers*. Makes me think our drills should include smoke bombs.
I don't think that would be a good idea. If there was a panic and someone got hurt you can bet the schoolboard would be sued. Practice makes perfect and even when we actually had fires at schools where I was at (only small thank goodness) the kids stayed calm and followed their training. @@veramae4098

I remember when this school was built on Marry Hill to accompany the new residences as the area was developed south of Eastern and Western drive at the top of the hill, we lived in one of the first homes on the hill built by Block Brothers on Denise place. I saw the original bill of sale for $19,600.00 and the interest rates at the time were 18%! Mary Hill and later Kilmer Elementary schools were the first and further north into PoCo was Central Elementary. Lots of schools for that area in those times.. Sad to see things disappear, especially when done through intentional destruction.
My children’s school had a fire too just over a decade ago and I would encourage the greater community, if you feel inclined to help, a tangible way to do that is to support lower income families or those with multiple kids in the school. Fire only gutted a portion of our school but smoke, water and heat got into every single classroom and hallway. One of my kids classrooms was on the far side of the school and they still lost the classroom pet from the intense heat. Major damage was done! Our fire was also in October and so winter coats, indoor shoes, the clothing they keep forgetting to bring home, and every school supply you purchased for them 6 weeks earlier is now either destroyed or smoke filled. A salvage crew goes in, catalogues everything, and boxes it up, then it takes to be professionally cleaned. That took 4.5 months for us. In the meantime your kids still need a new coat, clothing, school supplies, etc. That’s a huge financial burden for low income families to undertake so soon after just doing it in September. If you want to help these families, even a $25 Walmart gift card or a jacket your child grew out of will help. I had home owners insurance that I could use, but we had to first wait until we got our box back with items that they had been able to save and a list of the stuff they couldn’t before I could make a claim. It was 5 months before I could see reimbursement, and so I still had to find the money somewhere to buy new coats, indoor shoes, school supplies, etc which made the holidays extra tight for us. It was rough. Please consider helping these families if you can.
Wishing all involved the very best.
WONDERFUL idea.
I'm sorry for the childrens...all the best to that community.
So sad - hope they can rebuild for the students and teachers. Prayers go out to all involved.

I remember being a kid thinking that way too. On the other hand the kids there get a newer, modern building hopefully covered by insurance. It is also better than losing your own home. School staff usually tell kids not to bring valuables to school, that's one reason not too! I guess also if an older school due for renos or replacement burns it can be a mild blessing too.

Can this be considered a loss with what they teach these days?
My elementary school burned down due to arson many years ago. At the time, we lived right across the street from it so it was devastating to see it's destruction. It was an old heritage building and all they could salvage was the gymnasium. Seeing the firefighters try to salvage books and things from inside was sad because almost everything was burned or water logged. Then it was 2 years of kids being displaced and having to spend that time learning in portables at another elementary school's location.
So sad!
